Nippon Hoso Kyokai, Second Network (NHK 2) is an educational
network. A typical broadcast day includes several hours each of high
school broadcasts, cultural programs, and foreign language lessons and
newscasts. All programs originate in Tokyo and are fed simultaneously to
all stations in the network. There are no locally originated programs,
except for weather reports.
The morning broadcasts include English, German, French, Spanish,
Chinese, Russian, and Italian programs between 2100 and 0100.
The following evening schedule was obtained from the NHK website in
July 2004:
0720-0740 Korean
0740-0800 Russian
0800-0900 Stock Market (weekdays)
0900-0910 Portuguese news
0910-0920 Spanish news
0920-1035 English lessons
1035-1300 High school and cultural programs
1300-1320 Weather (including local ID at end)
1330-1415 English lessons (English newscast 1400)
1415-1435 Italian
1435-1455 Chinese
1455-signoff Cultural and high school programs
Local IDs with call letters and location are given at 2030 sign-on, 0029,
0719, 1319, and sign-off (1635 Tu-Fr, 1640 Sa, 1500 Su & Mo).
Allnight Nippon is a popular late night program carried by 36 radio
stations in Japan (about 2/3 of the commercial MW stations in the
country). The program is produced by JOLF-1242 (Nippon Hoso) and is
broadcast 1300-1500 M-F, 1600-1930 M-Sa (2000Fr), and 1400-1600 Su
(JOLF only). The 1300-1500 segment is called "Allnight Nippon Super!"
1600-1800 "Allnight Nippon Dot Com", and 1800+ is called "Allnight
Nippon-R". Many stations only air the 1600-1800 part. See the
