DOMINICAN REPUBLIC- 4960.12: Radio Villa, 0310-0403. Following up on Jay
Novello's log, excellent signal here, with all bachata program featuring
"Los 5 Grandes de la Bachata!". Breaks for "Las Deportivas", canned ID's
and nice, nice music. This station will easily take the place of Ecos
del Torbes as favorite LA powerhouse if they keep programming like this.
(Mark Mohrmann, VT, Sep 25, WORLD OF RADIO 1005 / GH SHORTWAVE/DX
REPORT 99-42, Sept. 30)

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC- 4960: R Villa, la sencilla, announces 1480 in
addition to 4960; SW Reports wanted to Apartado de Correos 804, Santo
Domingo. Stn owner, Agr. (short for Agrimensor, meaning Surveyor)
Roberto Vargas, who also owns R Cima 100, may wish to find out if
distant foreign listeners really notice the ID change from "Cima" to
"Villa"? The number of reports may have dwindled considerably over the
years, and so he may wish to gauge the present-day impact of SW. After
all, he knows "the rules of the game" and how to produce feedback from
DXers. When R Cima surfaced on SW I talked to him on the phone, and when
he asked me how to get back to reporters - money was no object, he
said - I suggested a QSL-package consisting of a card or a letter, "a
pennant or something else". The eventual outcome was a card and a
letter, "a pennant a n d something else", actually an anniversary coin,
and, as an added bonus, a music tape. Whatever reason there may be to
the change of program feeder, I think we should flood Surveyor Vargas
with letters and friendly messages now that he is asking for listener
feedback. (Henrik Klemetz, Sweden, Sept 25, REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL
BROADCASTING, WORLD OF RADIO 1005 / GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-42, Sept.

ECUADOR- My German dictionary isn't handy, but I believe Hans-Joachim is
saying that he just heard from Rosiak of the HCJB German department
Monday at 2140 UT that the [unnamed] volcano is about to erupt... Might
be interesting to monitor HCJB this evening, English from 0000 to 0700
on 9745, 12015, and 21455-USB also audible, with news at 0100 and 0400,
followed by Studio 9, the most likely times they might say something
about this. The HCJB website,< http://www.hcjb.org.ec >has some general
info on Pichincha and another volcano, at least in the Spanish section,
but I don't see anything there about imminent eruption. (Glenn Hauser /
GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-42, Sept.
zukommen lassen Gruesse (Hans-Joachim Koch, Germany via Hauser) Above
was a RIBOLD Extra issued at 0051 UT Sept 28. The 0100 UT newscast Sept
28 explained: the mayor of Quito has raised the alert status from yellow
to orange, meaning an eruption of Guagua Pichincha is possible in days
or weeks. There is no need to leave Quito unless one has respiratory
problems. The yellow alert had been in effect since last October. On
Monday there were 1,542 seismic events of low magnitude. Then I caught
part of the news at 1200, which said the stores in Quito been cleared of
essentials such as bread and milk. You'll recall that HCJB has an
extensive contingency plan in the event of an eruption or associated
events, reported here some months ago (Glenn Hauser, REVIEW OF
INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING / GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-42, Sept. 30)

FINLAND- The widely quoted rec.radio.shortwave item that R. Finland's
evening B-99 broadcast to North America at 0230-0330 with English at
0300 will be on 9655 and 11655 apparently contains a typo: the full freq
sked previously published says it's 11665 (Glenn Hauser, WORLD OF RADIO
1006 / GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-43, Oct 7)

LAOS- 6130: Laos National Radio Vientiane Sep 25 at 1300-1330, Good
reception with Musical Prog in English and Laotian presented by man and
woman, no ID but Vientiane has been mentioned many times. (Mahendra
Vaghjee, Mauritius, WORLD OF RADIO 1005 / GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-42,
Sept. 30 )

NEW ZEALAND- RNZI still missing from 9700 as of this morning (Sept 29),
and 17675 isn't of any use out here during the wee hours of the morning.
As a substitute, I'm listening to Radio Australia around UT0800, coming
in well on 15515. (Ivan Grishin, Oshawa, Sept 29, WORLD OF RADIO 1005 /
GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-42, Sept. 30)

OMAN- 15140: R. Sultanate from Muscat heard on Sep 24 at around 1430;
the program was in English. Unable to hear any ID as the reception was
poor and try again the next day - the reception was fair 1420 with
English songs, 1425 the name of announcer was given as "Geeta Madari"
followed by details of to-morrow program as "Good Morning Oman" then
songs until 1430, then time pips and ID by man as "Radio Sultanate of
Oman in FM" followed by news bulletin - first headlines, then in
detail - ID at 1436 between the news, and it ended at 1438, then
followed immediately by talk by woman on people of Oman; 1501
announcement by man and immediately followed by program in Arabic
(Mahendra Vaghjee, Mauritius, Sept 26, REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL
BROADCASTING / GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-42, Sept. 30)

OMAN- Radio Sultanate of Oman heard Sunday 26th September, 1357 local
music, 1400 identification as English service, gave FM frequencies and
announced 15140 as being directed to Europe. News headlines, feature
programme on local events, full news 1430, tuned out, returned 1450,
music to switch to Arabic service 1500 without any closing
announcements. Good signal but low level hum on transmitter. (Mike
Barraclough, England, Sept 28, WORLD OF RADIO 1005 / GH SHORTWAVE/DX
REPORT 99-42, Sept. 30)

OMAN- [non]. Checked 15140 for reported English hour at 1400, Sept 24.
Tune in at 1355 to find two or three equally weak signals producing
pronounced subaudible heterodyne, one of which was in Spanish, and by
1405 this was building to dominate: La Voz de los Andes, natch (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1005 / GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-42, Sept.
30)

PAKISTAN- I took a look at the R. Pakistan website Sept 30. Tho undated,
assuming it is current, the slow-speed English newscasts as well as
English at 1600-1615 are gone. The so-called World Service, in Urdu and
English, but without specifying exactly when English segments may be,
has changed considerably: 0500-0700 Gulf/ME 11725 15175 17555 ---
0615-0700 SEAs 21730 17705 --- 0800-1100 WEu/UKOGBANI 15530 17835 ---
1330-1530 Gulf/ME 11570 15170 15465 --- 1700-1900 WEu/UKOGBANI 11570
15335. A separate page on news gives these times for English on the
domestic service: 0300, 1100, 1400, 1600. We know that English has been

reported at 1400 on 11570 (Glenn Hauser, WORLD OF RADIO 1006 / GH
SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-43, Oct 7)

SOMALIA- Radio Mogadishu Voice of People (VOP) It is nearly 4 months
(May 18) that VOP was off the air and at that time it was on 6980. It is
back on 6750 a freq where it was in Feb. Good reception at 15.30 until
went off at 19.00 after NA. The program was in Somali only. English,
Arabic and Swahili as well as the usual Military melody has not been
heard; instead the program was mainly patriotic songs and a lot of long
talks by man and woman mentioning the name of Mohamed Aydid many times
as well as "October 2". Religious program was at 17.45-18.00. (Mahendra
Vaghjee, Mauritius, Oct 2, WORLD OF RADIO 1006 / GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT
99-43, Oct 7)

SWITZERLAND - [non]. R. 510 International heard Sat until 2400 on WBCQ
7415. DJ Stevie was explaining that there is one new show per month,
starting on the first week, repeated following weeks (sort of like COM)
and interviewed the legal hash dealer. I have not heard him explain
where the name comes from (pronounced five-one-oh) but I figure it must
be a conversion from Roman Numerals, a significant set of letters! If
not, it should be. However, 510 will be replaced by The Real Amateur
Radio Show; see USA (Glenn Hauser, WORLD OF RADIO 1006 / GH SHORTWAVE/DX
REPORT 99-43, Oct 7)

U S A- VOA's Talk to America Friday Oct 1 featured the second appearance
of new VOA Director Sandy (never `Sanford') Ungar. He acknowledged
criticism of his first appearance that he came off 'like a dufus', but
emphasized that times and frequencies were not part of his day to day
job, and that he does know a lot about programming and policy. For
backup to answer questions outside his field of expertise, he had an
engineer as sidekick. At least three times Sandy emphasized that as of
today VOA is not under control of the State Department, but is an
independent federal agency; nevertheless, Editorials reflecting the
opinion of the US Government will continue; they are NOT written by
people on the VOA staff (and indeed one followed about Pakistan at
1755-1758). In response to recurrent comparisons of VOA with BBC, Sandy
pointed out that BBC has political controls unlike the VOA, e.g. the
case of Gerry Adams, Northern Ireland politician, whose voice the
British government forbade the BBC to broadcast; to his knowledge,
nothing like that has ever happened at VOA. Our previous observation
that 9770 from Philippines was the best frequency for TTA has proven to
have been anomalous; several later checks, including Oct 1, showed it
barely audible, while 17895 (Morocco?) is the only listenable frequency
here, except when the MUF is depressed. The actual times for TTA are
1706-1730 and 1732-1755, including some more breaks no doubt for
commercials on some affiliates (Glenn Hauser, REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL
BROADCASTING / GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-43, Oct 7)

U S A- All summer, WBCQ's 7415 coverage before sunset seems to have
dropped off drastically west of the Mississippi, but is gradually
improving here in OK. I was listening Friday Oct 1 at 2200 when
Idio-Audio(?) was supposed to debut. Maybe I am hopelessly linear, but I
am really put off by programs which do not identify themselves by name
in the first few seconds! Maybe this was it: phone-call on the air
talking about prayer and masturbation, then into apparent rock parody of
screaming preacher... But I soon lost interest even as reception slowly
improved (Glenn Hauser, OK, REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING / GH
SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-43, Oct 7)

U S A- Dear Glenn: New program starts the 16 of October. The Real
Amateur Radio Show, Saturdays 2330-2400 utc. Hosted by Mr. Mike and the
Timtron, the program will talk about all amateur radio topics, from the
hams to the pirates. Their first featured guest will be Riley
Hollingsworth of the FCC. Mr Hollingsworth is in charge of Amateur radio
rules enforcement. (Al Weiner, WBCQ Central, Oct 1, WORLD OF RADIO 1006
/ GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-43, Oct 7)

U S A- WRMI noted on 7465 earlier than usual Sept 26 [UT Sun] at 0025,
with 0029 English ID and into Spanish. Relaying R. Prague at 0300 in
English. AWR Wavescan at 0330. Excellent. Still no jamming. Had been on
7465 from *0330 (Brian Alexander, PA, WORLD OF RADIO 1006 / GH
SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-43, Oct 7)

U S A- The other station occupying 9370.0 at 1100-1200 only is WYFR,
Family Radio in Spanish. WYFR clashed with WTJC for a minute at 1059 as
the latter is till off-frequency about 9370.8, plus the usual RTTY. WTJC
came back on a bit after 1200, now with a strong CRI in Chinese on the
side at 9365. Furthermore, there is more company around the frequency.
At 1048 Oct 2 I found on 9372.0 USB, Atencion 765-03, 1050 06-51 over
and over, and then into 5-digit Spanish numbers by woman. At this hour
WTJC was not audible. The next day WTJC did not come back on until 1230
(Glenn Hauser, REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING / GH SHORTWAVE/DX
REPORT 99-43, Oct 7)

U S A- R. Marti heard on new 15790, at 1056 Oct 2. Quickly computed that
is another mixing product of very strong signals, so not sure whether
receiver- or transmitter produced: 9805 plus 5985 (Glenn Hauser, OK,
REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING / GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-43, Oct
7)

U S A- Replies (non) from WGTG. I tried to contact station owner David
Franz to request an explanation as to why he no longer answers
listeners| letters, but the E-mail address has been disconnected and no
longer works. I would advise members not to waste any further time or
expense on trying to verify WGTG as Franz is clearly not interested in
hearing from listeners and no longer replies to letters (Dave Kenny,
British DX Club Communication Oct / GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-43, Oct
7) --- Hello? Most stations do not exist to serve listeners! It is just
more obvious in the case of WGTG. It appears the E-mail address <
wgtg@xxxxxxxxxxx >works when Franz wants it to, as I just received Oct 5
a promotion from him that WGTG has a deposit in hand to build a third
50,000 watt [sic] sideband transmitter, and will install two new
antennas to fill the gap to the northeast and east (Glenn Hauser, REVIEW
OF INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING/ GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-43, Oct 7)

U S A- WTJC was booming in on 9370.8 around 2350 UT 9/28 with some
pretty cheezy gospel music and occasional "FBN" network IDs. Full ID
0000 "This is WTJC, Newport, NC, a member of the FBN Radio Network..."
Gave mailing address as 520 Roberts Road, Newport, NC 28570. (Randy
Stewart, Springfield MO, WORLD OF RADIO 1005 / GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT
99-42, Sept. 30)

U S A- WTJC, 9370.8, gave no ID at 0100 Sept 29, just IS and into USA
Radio network news -- the first choice of the far right for its slanted
coverage - with music and bible quotations at commercial breaks;
checking tape later, found WTJC ID in news commercial break; 0104
mentioned ``FBN'' and into network program; until 0200 playing Amazing
Grace on piano in minor key, really weird; 0200 sharp heard full WTJC ID
by woman with contact info, recorded to display on WOR 1005; 0300 again
skipped any legal ID for USA news; recheck at 0920 was still on badly
mixing with ute; 1120 check, some other religious broadcaster was on
9370.0 in Spanish; that's the hour WTJC is not authorized. 1202 WTJC
came back with news; 1218 full ID again. Congratulations on picking a
frequency with so much interference! Real pros at work and
self-defeating yet another gospel huxter of which we already have far
too many on American SW. Checked the next evening, UT Sept 30 around
0245, the carrier seemed to be on, unmodulated, mixing with RTTY (Glenn
Hauser, REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING / GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT
99-42, Sept. 30)

U S A- ABC PERSPECTIVE Sundays 1100-1200 on all three AFRTS frequencies
4278.5 6458.5 12689.5 (Rod Williams, GA, Sept 26 BROADCASTING / GH
SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-42, Sept. 30) --- That includes essays by Hugh
Downs, and retreads from TV's 20/20 ** U S A. From Al Weiner Worldwide
on WBCQ 7415, UT Sat Sept 25 at 0000: Per call from Mister Mike, new
show with him and Tim Tron, Real Radio, starts Oct. 16; will have guests
such as FCC enforcer Riley Hollingsworth. Didn't hear any time given,
but that be on Saturdays. Idio [?] Audio, weird music show starts next
Friday at 6-7 pm [2200-2300 UT]. Nathan Molley [?] World-Wide Request
show from Radio Middle East, Cyprus, this Saturday at 2000. R 510 Int'l
temporarily takes 2330-2400 UT slot on Saturdays. The Allen Sane Show,
with Ivan Sun 2030-2100 plays really good music. Will be bringing back
The Album Zone at a different time than before; and wants to get Gary
Bourgois back on, but not at previous Friday evening valuable prime
time. Al was retiring his hand tool bag which has accompanied him on
many radio adventures and giving it away. (Glenn Hauser, REVIEW OF
INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING / GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-42, Sept. 30)

WALES- [non]. I'm listening to Celtic Notes UT Sat Oct 2 0200-0229 on
9795 with very good signal; pretty good show with jingle, interview from
Wrexham about choral music. Seems to be dedicated to providing weekly
features about Wales. They have a competition closing Sept 1, 2000, for
a trip to Wales. See < http://www.homecomingwales2000.com > In the
original report of this at 1230 on 17650, I slipped on the date -- it
was Saturday, Sept 25 (Glenn Hauser, REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL
BROADCASTING / GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-43, Oct 7)

WALES [non]- Merlin has a new customer, seemingly all via UK sites,
Wales Radio International; just caught end of Sept 26 Saturday
1230-1300 broadcast on 17650 when they were giving weekly schedule, also
Fri 2030-2100 on 7235 (not 7325) and UT Sat 0200 on 9795 -- bet that one
is to NAm (Joe Hanlon, PA, enjoying his new communications receiver,

PRESS RELEASE

TDP, the Worldwide Transmitter Organisation
( http://www.transmitter.org ) is the starting point for the shortwave
broadcaster, present and future, and for all other persons involved in
shortwave radio broadcasting. On our website, you will find out how to
look for a transmitter, antenna or tube amongst other valuable
information related to shortwave broadcasting. A brief description of
the different sections explains why there are 9 good reasons to bookmark
TDP. 1) Shortwave Transmitter AIR-TIME: 24 international broadcasters
have joined forces to provide the largest source of air-time available
on shortwave. Hiring air-time to broadcast a programme on shortwave is
simple thanks to this service at < http://www.air-time.org >. All
possible target areas or even worldwide coverage is possible, whether
you need only 1 hour per week on a short-term contract or daily coverage
on a long-term basis. 2) Shortwave Broadcast ANTENNAS: This section not
only contains links to the different manufacturers of shortwave
broadcast antennas, but has been expanded to a real antenna selection
guide. Several articles related to shortwave broadcast antennas have
been included (like "How to select an antenna") as well as
specification sheets of the most important antenna types used for
shortwave radio broadcasting like curtains, log periodics, broadband
dipoles, etc. 3) Shortwave Transmitter COUNTRIES: The country by country
database of shortwave transmitters has become more user-friendly by
incorporating clickable maps for each continent of the world and a
pull-down menu of countries, so that you can select a country with it's
transmitter details in 2 easy ways. 4) DIGITAL Shortwave Radio: We are
nearing the time that real digital shortwave radio will be implemented.
On air tests will take place in November 1999 and system recognition by
the ITU is expected in early 2000. 5) Shortwave Radio DX-CLUBS: More
than 60 shortwave radio dx-clubs have a website on the internet. Be sure
to join one to get the latest information on the subject of your
interest. 6) Shortwave Radio DX-PROGRAMS: DX-programs are one of the
programs most-listened to on shortwave. This new section has a link to
the majors shows, most of which can be listened to through the internet
as well. 7) Shortwave Radio STATIONS: Where else do you find links to
the official websites of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation and
Radiodiffusion Tªlªvision Marocaine? More than 260 websites of radio
stations broadcasting on shortwave are listed in 5 categories:
Governmental and Public, Religious, Commercial, Free and Pirate,
Clandestine and Opposition. 8) Radio Broadcast TRANSMITTERS:
Specification sheets of shortwave broadcast transmitters, new or old,
and now also links to manufacturers of AM, SW, FM and DAB radio
transmitters make this section your first step in your search for a
radio broadcast transmitter, new or used. 9) Shortwave Transmitter
TUBES: Need a tube for your shortwave transmitter? Be sure to check out
our database of where to look for a tube, by manufacturer or by tube
type. For access to one of the above sections, go to<
http://www.transmitter.org >or< http://www.transmitter.be >. PS: if you
want to be removed from our mailing list, please reply with

RADIO-PORTAL - < http://www.radio-portal.org >is online since Sept.
2nd, 1999 on a test basis, offering a portal site with search engine
especially for amateur radio, DXing, SWLing,
Clandestines/Pirate/Satellite/Scanner. Further features will be added
during this month. Regular operation starts on October 1st, 1999. Why a
new search engine - aren't there enough already? There are several
reasons for a special search engine which covers selectively a special
field of interest: Usual search engines will bring only a small part of
the URLs, as the database may not cover certain items adequately. In
August 1999, a well known search engine brought exactly one hint for the
search "longwave"...Radio-portal is going a new way. All data will have
a close connection to the field of interest, the URLs had been checked
manually and are being updated permanently. The search engine has been
developed especially for radio-portal, and it's fast! No frames are
used, so every page can be boomarked and saved on HD as a personal
address book, which, of course, can be updated any time. Best Regards,
(Willi Passmann, DJ6JZ / GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-42, Sept. 30)
