IRCA '99/DecalcoMania '99: The 1999 IRCA/DecalcoMania Convention will

DETAILS:
KJJK-Fergus Falls, Minnesota will test with Morse code IDs on Monday
morning, April 26th, 1999 from 0500 to 0600 Eastern Time. KJJK will NOT
be operating with on their 2000 watts non-directional, as their initial
confirmation indicated. I have spoken to Mr. Swedberg of KJJK, and he
said they would be operating with their 370 watt night power,
directional only. The night pattern has two major lobes: 020 degrees
and 222 degrees (both at 881 watts ERP). For anyone who wishes to
receive a graphic of KJJK's night pattern, e-mail a request to me. Be
sure to indicate the format you require (BMP, PCX, WMF, etc).

CPC DX test Results

KTBK-1700, Sherman, TX tested Saturday, March 27, 1999 from 4:00-8:00 pm
CT(5:00-9:00 ET):
Ragnar Danneskjold in Mesa, AZ reports he heard the test well on an
Kenwood R-1000 and a GE SRIII. Patrick Griffith of Federal Heights, CO
says he had access only to a car radio at the time of the test and was
only able to hear the Radio Disney station on 1690. Patrick Martin in
Seaside, OR says the test was pretty good at this QTH, as he heard
several voice IDs. He also mentioned that he noticed that some of the
code IDs were much stronger than others, perhaps because the station was
switching power during them. Nigel Pimblett in Medicine Hat, AB, heard
the test and also noted this and agrees with Patrick's thought. J.D.
Stephens in Madison, AL, also heard the test at good strength, tho he
reports some QRM from KBGG-IA and WRNC-FL. Rick Lewis reports that
KBTK's signal was heard in Glendale, AZ, the best signal being after
what he surmises was an increase to full power. He also mentions that
KTBK was heard in Griffin, GA, under KBGG until the increase in power,
and then over KBGG. Steve Francis in Alcoa, TN reports hearing KTBK loud
and clear at his QTH, but Craig Rathbone in Denver, CO says he only
heard a very short piece of code. Saul Chernos in Toronto, ON, says he
heard the test quite well in central Toronto on a Yacht Boy 400, tho he
could hear KBGG-IA and a hint of WRNC-FL.
KTSA-550, San Antonio, TX tested Sunday, March 28, 1999 at 1:06-1:16 am
ET:
This was a re-scheduling of a re-scheduled test; the station had lots of
bad luck when it came to running a test this DX season! Several DXers
reported to me that they tried for the test but were unable to hear it;
Patrick Martin of Seaside, OR contacted the station was was told that
due to a lightning storm in the San Antonio area at test time which
knocked KTSA's FM off, the test was not run.
WQSN-1660, Kalamazoo, MI tested daily thru March, 1999 with CW IDs at
the top of each hour:

Before all I had was a tentative on this, now a def. log. (PM-OR)
How many MW DXers are going after the X Band stations? If not you are
sure missing some good ones. Tonight, living on the Oregon coast I tuned
from WPHG-1620-AL, KCJJ-1630, IA, WMDM-1690-MD, etc. It is pretty easy
to hear stations all over the country on a nightly basis. Tonight I can
hear about 19 out of the 23 stations operating on the X Band! If you are
not DXing the X Band, go for it!!! You are missing alot.

1460 KENO Las Vegas, NV 2323 3/4 with ad about learning disabilities
and into ESPN sports. First time heard this season. Usually heard
in summer.
1540 KCTD CA, Los Angeles 2203 with LA Clippers basketball. Playing
the Spurs and losing as usual. [new]

850 KHLO HI, HILO. After talking with Chuck Boehnke in Hawaii, he
informed me that KHLO is now up to a full 5 KW, and that the
signal is stronger. Tryed at 1320 UTC (0920 EST) 4/4, and hrd the
best signal from them I have heard in a long time. Still Oldies
Rock, broadcasting Dave's Diner (Sat service) and a nice
"850-KHLO" ID. (PM-OR)
1700 KTBK TX, SHERMAN, still coming in weak to fair at 0940 EST 4/4
with Sports Talk. It was broad daylight outside! QRM from Radio
1701-Brisbane, who was stronger with their 400 watts though.

I am also hearing an Art Bell station here in Denver on 1450, could
be a number of stations. I noticed one close to you in Prescott. It is
really getting hard to ID these stations that carry ESPN or Art Bell
etc, they have about a 3 second ID at the top of the hour only. Get your
tape recorder going at :59. Art Bell is everywhere

I would like to construct a BCB coupler (Pi Section Coupler) that was
printed in a 1968 issue of Popular Electronics. I fabricated a coil form
and found a 365pf variable capacitor. The last part I need is a 250pf
variable. Does anyone know where I could find one? Can I modify a 365pf
by removing plates? Any info would be appreciated.

Just use a 365 pf capacitor, or a 500 pf. It'll just have extra range.

Merengue is mostly from the Dominican Republic; there is a Haitian
merengue which tends to be faster paced (like the old-fashioned perico
ripiao from the RD... the precursor of today's merenengue). To
complicate, there is now "Merengue Colombiano" which is rhythmically
similar, but uses more Colombian style instrumentation. Merengue is
popular almost everwhere around the Caribbean Basin, including Central
America.
Colombia's Magdalena basin produced the Cumbia, a fusion of African
rhythms and local influences. The current cumbia is so internationalized
that it is seldom heard in its original forms. In fact, Colombia has the
cumbia (with a brassy sound), vallenato (with its accordeon, and
variants called things like mapayi, pasemto, cumbisn, and so on. the
cumbia has been adapted by the keyboard based "grupos" of Mexico,
particularly around Monterrey, to do a cumbia grupera which uses all
synthesized keyboard sounds and is more like a pop rendition; even
Argentina has a wave of "musica bailantera" which is very pop sounding,
keyboard based cumbia.

BEVERAGE ANTENNAS
Well in Australia you've got the kangaroo, in Northern Europe, the
raindeer and here on the Northern West Coast of North America, you've
got elk. I got up this morning and turned the Drake R8 on to find out
very little signal was coming through on my Northern Beverage. I knew
what the problem was, as I have repaired in in the past. Yes, a herd of
elk decided to go right through my neighbors fence and through my
beverage. Well it is all fixed now. I raised it abit through that area,
so may the next time, the elk will miss hitting it.
On the subject of beverages, how many who have beverages up year around
ever check splices? I do quite often, but with all the rain we have had
this year, some of the soldered connections are worse. I am right in
the process of replacing some of the wire on the Eastern Beverage that
runs 1500 feet. In the next few days I hope (weather permitting) to
replace or at least check every splice. The beverage has been out there
for 15 years and have gotten alot of splices in that period. I might add
we have very high winds on the coast here. We had 2 wind storms in Feb /
Mar of gusts to 120 MPH. Wnds of 70 MPH are common place in the Winter
months. I always use insulated wire. It generally about #14 or #12.
In my checking of unwrapping the splices yesterday, I found one really
bad connection. Apparently an old one. I cut it out and respliced it
after cleaning the wire good. You really need a good solder joint in the
high winds here. You don't want crackle crackle on my radio.
In the process of repairing the splices, I have found the Eastern
Beverage to get my directional again. It has been abit on the poor side
the last few months.
To give you an example. Close to two wave lengths on 1600 khz, I have
done well DXing the Midwest & Eastern US with the beverage. 10 years ago
I used to hear stations like WXVI-Mongomery AL and WWRL-New York. In
the past few months, Utah dominates. Well, they used to dominate until a
couple days ago when I repaired some splices. Last night it was CO and
MO. The conditions weren't even very good. 1600 khz along with other
frequencies are most of a jumble again. I noticed WMDM tearing up KDDZ,
WQSN under KXOL, etc. So, if you have beverages out there, check your
splices. It has made a world of difference and I have more to go.
