A great way to make secure and watertight splices that will last until
your next elk attack are little guys called Scotchlocks. It generally
has three spaces that you can put wires into. You press down a plastic
button that has a piece of metal attached to it and the wires get
spliced. The icing on the cake is that they also have a blob of RTV
silicone sealant in them to make a very long lasting splice. These
were developed for Telco use and are available through Radio Shack and
a bunch of other places. Once you try them, you'll never solder again
