For portable radios, stick to J&R Music World on Park Row, across from
City Hall.

Avoid Barry Electronics like the plague!  Not only are their prices
near list price, but the store is filthy, and the sales staff have no
interest in making a sale.  Seeing how this business is run makes me
wonder if there's some sort of other activity going on at their
location.

Personally, I buy all my gear from Universal Radio.
