ARGENTINA - Re this item formerly sent to you: ARGENTINA 6060 Radio
Nacional, Buenos Aires is currently inactive due to xter failure. This
xter is located at General Pacheco. This news has just been cfmd by
GIB-Argentina. (Nigro-Uruguay, May 13)  HERE IS AN UPDATING INFO: The
problem with this xter at Gral.Pacheco has not been solved yet. A
transformer has broken and they are making a new one. They expect to
have it OK in about 15 days. This info kindly emailed to me from
GIB-Argentina. (Nigro-Uruguay, Jul 5)

AUSTRALIA - Note that RA has two new 13mb channels, per a new sked
effective June 28 from Nigel Holmes, RA Transmission Manager--one of
them aimed at NAm, 21740, which was used in the last sunspot peak,
2100-0200. With a little help from the MUF, might well make it. The
other is 21820, at 0200-0900 toward PNG and Japan (Glenn Hauser, OK / GH
SW/DX Report 98-28, JUNE 22)

AUSTRALIA - RA's Feedback mailbag show with Roger Broadbent is once
again easy to hear thanks to the revival of 21740, UT Sat at 0005-0030.
On July 4, Nigel Holmes explained some last-minute changes to the
frequency schedule we publicized which was to go into effect June 29.
Due to VOA which started using 9770 recently instead of 5985, RA can't
use 9770 at 0800-1200 but instead resumes 9580, and on a less favorable
beam for NAm than used on 9580 after 1200. Due to "bureaucratic
swamp"(?), 21820 can't be used at 0200-0900 to PNG, so on 21725 instead.
The 17715 at 2100-0900 for SPac now cuts away for sports, Grandstand,
Sat & Sun 0200-0800, along with some lower frequencies. July 4 at 1224
we noted RA on 9660 //9580, not bad and probably 100 kW rather than
Brandon 10 kW; not scheduled at this hour in the June 28th version; and
9580 was still very good at 1500 check (Hauser, USA / GH SW/DX Report
98-30, July 4 )

AUSTRIA - The Austrian government has approved the purchase by ORF for
new 100 kW shortwave transmitters to modernize the Moosbrunn site. (ORF
- Radio Austria International "Intermedia", Jul 3 via Kai Ludwig. / EDXP

AUSTRIA - In the '80's Moosbrunn was upgraded with two 500 kW Telefunken
transmitters, a rotatable antenna system as well as a curtain and two
non-directional aerials, latter ones with 300 kW capacity, resulting in
one transmitter running 500 kW into the rotatable system and the other
one 300 kW into a non-directional or (when 6155 is off the air) the
curtain installation. The other equipment at Moosbrunn dates back from
the '60's: four 100 kW Telefunken transmitters and an array of rhombic
and vertical-monopole antennas.  Currently two of the old transmitters
are in regular use, feeding into either a meanwhile erected log-periodic
antenna, the new curtain  installation or one of the vertic monopoles.
The other two 100 kW rigs as well as the rhombic arrays could eventually
be used, if the other equipment fails or must bedown for expensive work.
Since the shortwave service of ORF Aldrans was shut down, the 10 kW
Continental transmitter is now also maintained at Moosbrunn. Radio
Austria International had a nice booklet about it's Moosbrunn
facilities, but I'am not sure, whether it is still available or out of

AZERBAIJAN - (Nagorno-Karabakh) v9677.66, Voice of Justice, heard early,
at 0502 M&W with talks in Azeri at tune-in, many ments. of Karabakh,
some talks on Azerbaijan. Heavily overmodulated carrier, s/off 0536*.
The transmitter was on for at least 10 mins after 0700 without audio. On
Wed it apparently was on at 0500-0530*; I hrd it at 0529 without audio.
New country? They sent a diplomatic delegation to France this week and

CANADA - [non]. I heard Radio Asia Canada with their usual programming
on new 9855 at 0220 June 25. They were not on 9405 at that time, so this
looks like a freq change, I presume starting at 0200 (Ivan Grishin,
Ont., June 25, RIB via Hauser/ GH SW/DX Report 98-29, July 2)

CANADA - Contrary to Sellers' sked they are not on 15560 in the 2000
hour, and in fact June 30 came on late at *2102 joining news already in
progress about Sri Lanka. New ID at 2118, "This is the Radio Voice of
Canada; please stay tuned for Canadian and world news coming up..."

CANADA - IS RAC A TERRORIST OPERATION? Radio Asia Canada openly
sympathizes with the "Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam" (LTTE), one of
the world's most brutal terrorist groups, responsible for horrific
atrocities in Sri Lanka. Compared to LTTE, the PLO and Hamas are like
boy scouts. Canada has been a save haven for Tamil terrorists and drug
traffickers since 1987 when many of these bogus "refugees"  arrived
here. Most of them have settled in Toronto (where RAC originates?) and
it is no secret that they finance the anti-government terror in Sri
Lanka with Canadian drug money. Germany is another major base for Tamil
terrorists, who have also attacked the Deutsche Welle relay station in
Sri Lanka. DTK in Juelich, which sells shortwave airtime to Radio Asia
Canada, is apparently unaware of the terrorist connection, and it is
surprising that the Sri Lankan government hasn't protested to the German
and Canadian authorities. I suspect they don't even know about the RAC
broadcasts or the German transmitter site. Radio Asia Canada, 15560, has
a long English newscast at 2100-2159*, including Canadian news. 15560,
11975 and 9560 are heard with powerhouse signals, but 9405 is usually
wiped out by ute QRM. RAC has not been heard on 17530 at 1800 or 5890 at
0200, contrary to their sked on WOR in early June (Ernie Behr, Ont.,
June 16, WORLD OF RADIO 947/ GH SW/DX Report 98-29, July 2)

CANADA - [non]. I reported previously that R. Voice of Canada was not
using 15560 in the 2000 hour, and on that occasion it was not on when I
tuned in around 2056 but came on at 2102; however subsequently it was
heard when checked around 2015, but in Tamil, not English as in the
Sellers article. On July 3, Sellers' interviewee, P. Koneswaran
identified himself as the newscaster in English we hear at 2100, as he
concluded English at 2133 (Glenn Hauser, OK / GH SW/DX Report 98-30,
July 4)

COSTA RICA - RFPI news from the Fri June 19 Mailbag, originally aired
live at 2029: the antenna which had been used for 7385 is now down, and
the new 4-element "super quad" to replace it is half-installed; the rest
to be completed in a few days, but will be used on 6980-AM as long
promised, from 0000 and will keep on past 0800 as listeners request,
with 10 kW transmitter which is on 21460 in the daytime. The super quad
is 58 feet long and mounted 180 feet high; should be operational by this
week; then 7385 will go back to the 3 kW transmitter on USB, antenna not
described. Plans to put photo of the new antenna on the website, which
will be easier once a scanner arrive (via Hauser/ GH SW/DX Report 98-28,
JUNE 22)

COSTA RICA - News from James and Debra Latham, RFPI Mailbag, first
airing June 26: RFPI plans to put all programming on live stream
Internet by yearend. 6980-AM was not full 10 kW power yet, but should be
within a week. 7385-USB may not be back for two weeks. Antenna for this,
not high gain, is held up in the USA (Hauser/ GH SW/DX Report 98-29,
July 2)

COSTA RICA - Due to an interference complaint from the Tasmanian
government about a PTP operation using 6980, which says RFPI is very
strong there in the 0400-0700 UT period, RFPI will be moving this week
to another frequency in the 6875-7000 range, preferably above 6920 as
the antenna resonates best at about 6960. Listeners are requested to
E-mail their suggestions of the clearest frequencies available to <
rfpicr@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx > - RFPI is using 10 kW now on 6980, but may try
30 kW to see how it works with the new super-quad antenna. Now that it
has frequency synthesizers, RFPI can move around more easily (James
Latham,  RFPI Mailbag July 3 via Hauser) --- 0400-0700 UT is 1400-1700
local time in Tasmania, a bit early in the afternoon, even in winter,
for RFPI to be putting much of a signal there, it seems to us. The
Spanish numbers station on 6983 AM has been heard here with a stronger
signal than RFPI and causing a considerable heterodyne around 0200-0245

CROATIA - HRTV Croatian Radio with several minutes of English news at
the hour 0100, 0200, 0300 on 9925 via Germany.  One hour later in Fall.

CZECH REP. - Radio Praga ha anunciado hoy que se ha logrado un acuerdo
para que sus emisiones en espanyol y otros idiomas continuen al menos
hasta diciembre de 1999.  Esta es una gran noticia, aún para quienes ya
no practican la SWL. Sin embargo hay que remarcar que las emisoras de SW
en SS cumplen un rol FUNDAMENTAL en la difusión de las organizaciones
diexistas, ya que mediante las mismas se logra contactar a nuevos SWL
que pueden en un futuro dedicarse al diexismo más avanzado. Instamos a

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC - R. Cima 100 is back in the air after several years
of absence. I myself listened to this stn the last time 1994. Noted on
4960.1, Radio Cima 100; Santo Domingo, 0045-0105, Sp, salsa and merengue
music with short announcements between the music pieces ("Radio Cima"),
full ID at 0102: "Desde la Republica Dominicana transmite Radio Cima

ERITREA - Voice of the Broad Masses of Eritrea, 1st Program on 5000,
7085; 2nd Program on 4000, 7390  *0300- English ID at s/on. Both in

ICELAND - Icelandic National Broadcasting Service (INBS) in Icelandic
*2300-2335* 9275, 11402; *1410-1440* 11402, 13860. *1855-1930*

INDIA - 5040 AIR Jeypore in Orissa is testing again both in the morning
and evening and it should easily propagate to dxers worlwide. 0030-0200
and 1200-1500 on 5040 with Indian film mx has been noted in the past few
days rather regularly. The daytime freq of 6040 has not been observed
yet. No stn id has been observed yet. The signal overrides RRI Pekanbaru
and is of very good quality. Addr: Mr P. Subramanium, The Assistant
Station Engineer, AIR Jepore, Jepore 764 005 Orissa, India. The Engineer
is a very active Ham Operator and SWL and one shouldn't have any

INDONESIA - The station on 3395.1kHz uses station identification as "RRI
Bandar Lampung". The former station name was "RRI Tanjungkarang".

IRAN - VOIRI noted on NF 11915 with Begali *0030-0100+ ex 11785. Moved
probably to avoid RRI External Svce 11785, in Sp 0030-0100. En noted on
9685 0045-0100, So on 9650 0045-0100, Jul 1, (Bob Padula / EDXP # 93)

IRAQ - BAGHDAD was heard here in London on June 27 on 11788 (ex-11785)
with Arabic at 1945.  When I checked the frequency again at 20.20 a
programme in German was in progress, and at 21.00, after some "pips" and
music, an English programme was heard. Modulation was clear, without the
distortion that has previously plagued this station, but there was a
noticeable transmitter hum and, although musical items were easy to
listen to, the speech part of the programme was much weaker and
difficult to follow. There was QRM from Qatar on 11785.  It is not clear
whether Baghdad has "drifted" to 11788 or deliberately moved because of
Qatar. If it was a deliberate move, it seems odd that they didn't move
to 11790, which would have given them a better chance to avoid
adjacent-channel interference (Roger Tidy, England, June 28, WORLD OF

3955 kHz. 3955 kHz is now free again for us on Friday, Saturday and
Sunday. Deutsche Telekom heard this past week on 3960 Mon through
Thursday evening. 73, Ron --- About interference to IRRS-Shortwave from
Deutsche Telekom, Julich, Germany carrying Brother Stair on 3,960 kHz
between 2000-2200 UTC (conflict solved on June 29, 1998) Milan, Italy,
June 29, 1998: We receved a fax from Deutsche Telekom in Julich with
apologies for the interference caused to IRRS-Shortwave last Fri, Sat
and Sun, with the explanation that there has been a programming error at
Julich, as their transmitter on 3,960 kHz was not shut down during our
scheduled broadcast on 3,955 kHz. Thank you also to Brother Stair who
helped solving the problem with DT. We monitored Brother Stair's
broadcasts which are continuing on 3,960 kHz from Juelich, but this
should only be a Mon-Thu transmission, that should not interfere again
with our Fri-Sat & Sun operation on 3,955 kHz from 2200-2200 UTC.  ---

music fanfare and ID by W, then presumed local news by M in lang. Weak
at opening but improving to fair level by 0520 w/indignenous island
vocals hosted by W announcer. Retuned to island vocal at 0557 and cut
over to R. Australia news at 0600:45 following announcement by local
announcer, //11880. W w/local and regional Pacific news in EE at 0605.
Best in USB, although audio was readable (w/slop from 9805) in LSB mode.
Freq, on at least this date, shifted up slightly from more usual

KYRGYZSTAN - Kyrgyz Radio First Pgm 4010 and 4050 *2300-1800* in Kyrgyz,
English news 2310-2315. At 2330 4010 continues in Kyrgyz, 4050 switches
to Russian. One hour later in Fall. (Skalmeraas, DX-W95 / ODXA Target
Listening  July 98)

LAOS - Very weak carrier noted on 4682.5 at *1050-1220* 11 June, maybe
Houa Phan but no intelligible audio heard under local noise. No trace of
Luang Prabang on 6973. There is a strong carrier on the freq regularly
in the evenings from *1020-1359 and early mornings *2345-0030* but with
no discernible modulation except for sporadic CW and SSB utility traffic

LIBERIA -  "The State-owned Liberia B/Cing System has been shut down
temporarily. The stn's management say it is closing down due to
technical reasons. It further said the closure was to enable the stn to
relocate from Ducor to its original Paynesville site. The LBS management
said further that it is making efforts to acquire needed equipment for
the re-opening of the stn." (Star Radio E-mail nx, Jul 2 via NU / EDXP #

MALAYSIA - SARAWAK. Radio broadcasting in Sarawak generally is available
during three distinct periods: "morning", "midday" and "evening". The
English, Iban, and Bidayuh services adhere to these arrangements, known
as "pagi", "tengahari" and "malam" respectively. The Malay network runs
24-hrs    with no breaks. Thus, one may hear "Berita Pagi" (=morning
news), "Berita Tengahari" (=midday news), and "Berita Malam" (=evening
news). The Malay network (no longer on shortwave) carries special
programs such as "Laporan dari Sibu", "Laporan dari Limbang" and
"Laporan dari Sri Aman" (regional reports from Sibu, Limbang, and Sri
Aman / EDXP # 94). --- "Good Morning Sarawak" is the general title of
the morning program in the the English service from 2330-0100. The
Bidayuh network has "Selamat Pagi Sarawak" (=good morning Sarawak) from
2200-0000.  The Iban and Bidayuh languages contain many words/phrases
drawn from Malay/Indonesian, as well as some from English (eg: "Phone-in
