GLEANINGS
------------------------------

CHILE - Voz Christiana: Their gut feeling is that within a matter of
weeks they will get final approval to start bcing. They are quite
confident that 21550 will be authorized for use to Mexico and they are
also hoping to use 21505 for Brazil. They are still formulating their
QSL policy, but they will be sending out QSL-cards. There are no plans
to carry Chilean government programming. (Interview of Andrew Flynn, CE,
on HCJB DXPL, via NU, Mar-21/ EDXP # 84)

CHINA PR - The 1200 CRI English broadcast hasn't been intended for NAm
for a long time, but equinoctially has been coming in well on 9945 as
noted March 20, except for light jamming blips probably bleeding over
from ammassed Cubans on WRMI 9955. 9945 was a satellite-delay behind
//7385 in the absence of RFPI. I checked again March 26 at 1300 English,
and this time the two were synchronized, but very poor //11660, which
Joe Hanlon says is well heard in PA, was leading them both (Glenn
Hauser, OK / GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 98-13, March 26)

CLANDESTINE TIBET - Voice of Tibet can be contacted at
mailto:mail@xxxxxxxx Their URL is < http://www.vot.org > (Ludo Maes,
Belgium)

CLANDESTINE IRAN - Democratic Voice of Iran is now on the Internet as
well. They are at < http://www.dvi.org > E-mail can be send to <
mailto:mail@xxxxxxx > (Ludo Maes, Belgium)

COSTA RICA. - RFPI's 21465 was revived around 2300 UT Sat March 28,
after James Latham and co. spent a day in the hot tropical sun mounting
the new antenna atop a 120-foot tower. I first heard it at 0020 March
29, and reception actually improved to a peak about half an hour later,
then faded around 0110. 15050 had to be off Saturday because of the
tower work, but should be back Sunday or Monday with its own new antenna
atop a 200-foot tower with 12 dB gain yagi. We actually measured it on
21463.7, and James says that's the only crystal on hand at present, but
just as well to be a bit further away from BBC on 21470, which is
stronger in CR than OK, as it is from Cyprus to E&SAf 1400-1700. Says
the 10 kW on 21 was running only 5 kW, but ERP adds up to 60-80 kW,
aimed due north. Should be back on early Sunday from about 1400.
Meanwhile, addled by the sun, RFPI started COM and WOR an hour early
Saturday night, but got back on track by playing them again at the
proper hours. Later: it was on by Sun at 1347 check; but propagation
below normal. Better at 1908 check when measured around 21465.6, same
crystal varying ? (Glenn Hauser, OK / GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 98-15,
March 29)

EAST TURKESTAN, REPUBLIC OF - Attention NASWA Country List Committee:
NASWA should count XINJIANG as a separate radio country, just like Tibet
and Manchuria. Under Soviet control from 1944 to 1949, Xinjiang was
known as the Republic of East Turkestan. Now includes the CRI Urumchi
transmitter site, such as 9900 at 1800-2227* to Europe since Jan 1
(Ernie Behr, Ont., WORLD OF RADIO 934/ GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 98-13,
March 26)

EGYPT - My unID in 98-10, Arabic on 15283.9, March 6 at 1712, is V. of
the Arabs, Cairo, says Tarek Mostafa Zeidan, Egypt in Cumbre DX. He
reports exactly the same frequency March 16 at 1755 interviewing a Cairo
University professor. On March 12 Wolfgang Bueschel had Cairo on
15284.94, but Libya also varied in the area 15286.17-15286.28 (Glenn
Hauser, OK / GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 98-13, March 26)

ETHIOPIA - [non]. Rainbow Radio still on 5905 via DTK Germany, barely
audible beneath heavy fax, UT Sat March 21 at 0100. Expect this to
change to 9855 for Z-98 from April, per DTK sked in BC-DX, along with
Lithuania at 0030, and if they come back, Ireland at 0100 Thu, New
Nigeria at 0100 Sun (Glenn Hauser, OK / GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 98-13,
March 26)

GREECE - Voice of Greece on new 17525 found with good back-loop signal
at 1240 with English program to Africa (Avlis 100 kW / 182 degrees).
(Kai Ludwig, Mar-29/ EDXP # 84)

GUINEA - 9650 Radiodiffusion Nationale, Conakry, 2330 Mar 12,
reactivated here and on //7125.African highlife selections, numerous
announcement blocks with formal ID and frequencies, requesting reports.
Reasonable signal but watery-sounding audio on 9650; tnx to suggestion
from Mark Veldhuis in #swl, checked listed parallels and found it 30
over 9 on 7125. Nice guitar IS 2345-2349, then back with same
announcement and more music 2350. VO Russia started tuning up on
frequency around 2355, mixing thereafter. Announcements said: "Ici
Conakry, Radiodiffusion Nationale de la Republique du Guinee. L'emission
Telephone..... (lots of numbers)
...indique le lieu, l'heure, et le frequence d'ecoute de la present
emission." Basically: They want to know the quality of their shortwave
transmissions, and they want reports of the place, time and frequency
where you heard this transmission. Send your reports to the address
above. Frequencies given as 6155 7125 9650 and 15310. Both till going
strong at 0230; 9650, free of QRM, better then. Found this quite by
accident when checking 9650 for Uruguay, which was not heard tonight.
Not heard Mar 13 or 14. Almost sounds like they received a Gabon-like
infusion of cash from Paris. (12-Mar/Novello-NC / NASWA LN April 98)

GUINEA - 6155 Radiodiffusion Nationale, Conakry, 0605-0620, Arabic-style
chants and intevening talk segments by male anncr to 0615, then
switching to woman in French followed by Afro vocals. Very good at
tune-in, mixing with but still generally atop R. Austria Int'l by
0615+. Also on //7125 but not as strong - over/under Moscow. Checked for
but unheard on 9650 or old 4900. (David Clark, Mar-16 / EDXP # 83)

IRAN - VOIRI noted in English 0030-0130 on unannounced 9650 (apparently
replacing the 49m frequency) parallel to 9022 and 9685. (Sundstrom, USA
Apr 2)

ITALY - Adventist World Radio announces today (Mar-24) that it has just
purchased 133 acres of land near the small town of Argenta in
north-eastern Italy. Dr. Don Jacobsen, Director of the worldwide AWR
System, states that this site will be the location of a large shortwave
station capable of reaching more than one third of the world's total
population. This new radio property is located near the small farming
community of Argenta and was originally part of a reclamation project
from the Adriatic Sea during the time of Mussolini. The project
Director, Engineer Brook Powers, states that the flat land with a high
water table makes an ideal location for shortwave propagation. A new
transmitter building at Argenta will house four large shortwave
transmitters with the option of adding two more. Initially, the antenna
field will contain six highly directional antennas. Ground breaking
ceremonies at the Argenta property are scheduled for later this year.
Plans call for this new station to be switched into regular service in
July in the year 2000 during the worldwide Quinquennial Convention of
the Seventh-day Adventist denomination in Toronto, Canada. The signing
ceremony in Argenta was also attended by Stefano Losio, Operations
Director at AWR-Forli; Greg Hodgson who is Operations & Engineering
Director for the AWR System; and former owners of the farming property
which will be turned into a large radio station. The Italian government
enacted special legislation a couple of years ago ennabling Adventist
World Radio to construct a large international shortwave station in
Italy. The main coverage areas from this new station will be Central &
Southern Asia, Africa and the Middle East. (Dr. Adrian M.
Peterson,Co-ordinator - International Relations, AWR, Mar-24 / EDXP #
83)

JAPAN - [non]. The new R. Japan relay via Sackville started UT April 2
at 0000-0100 on 11705; loud and clear here, tho wider band audio would
be nice; at first RCI was running its own newscast by mistake, but at
0007 recheck had switched to NHK in English. //9665 via Ascension with
satellite delay, still badly mixing with VOR in Spanish (Glenn Hauser,
OK/ GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 98-13, April 2)

KOREA SOUTH - [non?]. For the past two Sundays, RKI Murtiwave Feedback
has made a point of announcing that for Z-98 the 1230 broadcast to SEAs
will be on new 6055, "and also to Europe on 6055". If so, it seems two
different relays would have to be used; and this is bad news for NSB
Tokyo, which has been on 6055 forever; haven't they noticed this in
Seoul? (Glenn Hauser, OK / GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 98-13, March 26)

LITHUANIA - [non]. R. Vilnius via Germany as expected on new 9855 for
Z98, English at 0030. One evening, transmitter did not come on until
about 0050; and this suffers from RN-Bonaire 9845 splash (Glenn Hauser,
OK, March 31 / GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 98-16, March 31)

MALI - This may well be very old news, but I just got the new edition of
CRI Messenger, and it's showing the Mali relay being used again, but
only on ONE frequency, 7170--and since this only lists English-language
programs I have no idea what else might be on it at other
times...English to Europe 2200-2300 to Eastern & Southern Africa
2000-2100 to Western & Northern Africa 2100-2130 (Randy Stewart, MO,
March 17, WORLD OF RADIO 933 / GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 98-13, March 26)

MEXICO - XERTA is still active on 4800.7 whenever checked at night, with
usual mostly-musical format, and heavy het with TGBN whenever it is on,
such as at 1132 March 31. Best to listen after 0330 unless you have too
much Lesotho (Glenn Hauser, OK / GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 98-16, March 31)

NEW ZEALAND - Replying to a listener's question, Myra Oh on RNZI Mailbox
March 30 said there was still no decision about the fate of RNZI (Glenn
Hauser, OK/ GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 98-16, March 31)

QATAR - Dohar noted on new 9520 0315-0630, ex usual 7210 at *0245-0705*
and//9570, very bad choice: RL in Ru 0200-0800, VORI Tehran in Swahili
0415/0420-0427* plus Turkish *0430-0527* and Bosnian *0530-0627*,
VoSudan (cland.) *0400v-0600v* on 9519.1 (10-Mar/Timofeyev-RUS / NASWA
LN April 98)

THAILAND - R. Thailand, English at 1230-1300 reconfirmed still on 9885
Udorn, March 30; their most reliable airing here, tho with nearly polar
path often subject to disturbances; fluttery March 31 (Glenn Hauser, OK/
GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 98-16, March 31)

UKOGBANI - [non]. Sunrise Radio test via DTK Germany, 5880, which I
reported in 98-12 March 20, has not been heard since in the +0100-0400*
period despite nightly checks; though Edwin Southwell, England and Ray
Woodward, British DX Club say it continues in the 1500-2030 period on
5840, except for 1700-1730 when TWR is carried instead (Glenn Hauser,
March 26, WORLD OF RADIO 934 / GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 98-13, March 26)
