News
North America's "Shortwave Liberation II" continues...we're now at more than
74 straight days of pirate radio activity! And it's been great listening!
Radio Metallica Worldwide continues to tear up the bands with plenty
of broadcasts throughout the week and on weekends on 6955 and 11885 kHz. Dr.
Tornado is especially interested in putting good signals into Australia/NZ
and Europe, so listen up! Those 10 kW really travel! And for all you
skeptics out there, the first RMWW QSLs have started to trickle out from the
box.
Last night, I was able to experience the country sing-along sounds
of TIE Radio from 0500-0535+. Seems like this one'll be active...
FRS Holland was heard around the world--even in the U.S. and New
Zealand! Good job, Peter & Joop!

"Is it just me or is the current state of shortwave piracy entering a new low in programming or should I say lack of programming? Sure, there has always been the Voice Of The Nights, The WPIGs & the like, but where are the stations like The Voice Of Laryngitis, K2000, & CSIC these days? Perhaps the lack of FCC enforcement has brought out those who just want to hear themselves on the air. What social value do stations such as KIRK have? A listing of various defunct stations punctuated by the words "That's Greaat" doesn't seem very entertaining to me. I know some people are mad at Dr. Tornado for hogging the airwaves but does that mean we need a Radio Tornado Worldwide? And what about these "NOT" stations. First there was NOT MYSTERY RADIO, now there's NOT RADIO METALLICA. I fail to see the value of NOT being a particular station. Get your own identity! Sure, there still are great stations around such as Radio USA, WREC, Radio Azteca, Radio Free Speech to name just a few. Mayb!

I'd offer that today's less-than-intense enforcement by the FCC has encouraged those who have put less thought & commitment into the risks of broadcasting, to plug in the Icom & click on the CD player to casually get on the air w/very little to say that's unique.
While nothing can be as bad as the "Ladd" [V of The Night] days (please, don't prove me wrong!!) certain stale efforts such as all the "NOT" stations come close... come on... that was KIND of funny the first time, & is beyond stale now. Is the low risk broadcasting environment allowing less committed broadcasters on the air these days?"
Jonny Augustsson in Sweden replies: "Well, I agree 100% w/you. Your problem is not unique! Our problem [in Europe] are all those non-identifiers that go on the air for several hours w/bad modulation playing non-stop Dutch folk music. If you are lucky, you might hear a voice w/even worse modulation 10 seconds before close down giving some kind of ID!. Is it not fun anymore or has it become something else I don't understand??"
Harold Frodge w/the Michigan perspective: "The state of pirate radio is just like everything else. On SWBC you get DX programs & you get Brother Stair (I would have used Dr. Gene as an example, but he's too much fun to listen to, especially when he throws one of his ***hole snits on the air). I say, take your best shot & fill the airwaves--I can always turn it off. Now, if you want to get me really started, let's talk about column editors who expect the contributors to do all their editing for them ..or else".
Maryanne Kehoe in GA [atlsvo@xxxxxxxxx]: "My beef is the "not" stations, i.e., NOT Radio Metallica, NOT Radio -------- [fill in the blank]. The Radio Is Not Radio stuff, for example, I couldn't keep up w/who was is, is not, was is not, never was is not etc ..... The "NOT" stations I think are a lazy excuse by an operator that doesn't/can't/won't come up w/his/her own original ideas. OK I'm done ranting!"

Comment:
Most of the time the stations I logged were a S2/3 but I gave them the best signal reading I received, even if it was for only a few minutes. The Farmers had the "Killer signal" of the day, most of the time S4. CWR seemed to have low mod & rf problems & was wipped out by SSB Italian chat for 15 mins at 0850. Ozone Radio ? on 5800 was very weak & suffered splash from RFL. A new RFL transmitter was tested on 5780kHz through the early hours of Sunday morning. Did any one hear it ?
News:
5805 will now be in use every weekend w/RFL & WMR from Scotland. At the moment Saturday night gives the best all round reception on this frequency as conditions during the day are still bad in general.

We need some help to identify the station above on 6284 (later in LSB mode!)
which was on the past weekends. A Treviso, Italy maildrop was given for
reports, but we got no ID yet. Maybe our friends in Italy can help?! At the
end of the transmissions quite often the country Lichtenstein was mentioned!
Ozone and BBMS fame Gary Stephens was in the studio of Union Radio this very
sunday morning and a live show was done.
RADIO 101 informed us that there is no aim to return to the 41 metre band in
the future because on 27035 kHz conditions to Europe are much more stable on
the 11m band nowadays! Even the signal strength is better there.
Heavy sunny summer these days here, I only picked up signals a few occasions
besides sleeping in the sun, hi...
