We are proud to announce for third time that the annual DX summer
meeting of Finnish DX Association will be held in Oulu, in Northern Finland.
The meeting will be arranged by Oulun DX-Klubi (DX-Club of Oulu), a local
branch of FDXA.
The Summer Meeting takes place on 1-3 of August 1997, beginning on
Friday afternoon, until Sunday afternoon.
Exact place is Virpiniemi Recreational Institute at Haukipudas, a small
village about 20 km's to the north from Oulu. And Oulu lies on the western
coast of North Finland.
Traffic links to Oulu are good: you can travel to Oulu from Helsinki by
air, train and bus. Oulu lies pretty close to border of Sweden, so you can
arrive via Sweden, too (i.e. border towns Haparanda and Tornio, about 125
km's from Oulu).
Almost 100 Finnish DX listeners are expected to participate in the
Summer Meeting. All foreign DXers as well as representatives of radio
stations are warmly welcomed to attend the meeting!

WVNS-670 Update

Construction of the new WVNS-670 continues. Installation of the transmitter
started last week. It is planned to start on the antenna tuning network
this coming week. Current plans are to put the first "power to the towers"
on April 20 but that is tentative. A DX Program is still a possibility.
Stay tuned.

That is all. The band in fact all of the bands seemed to be a state of upset
this weekend. Hoping for one more DX pedition before the snow melts and the
DX site goes under water. A real chance of that this year depending on the
weather. Shawn

Just spent Easter at Waianakarua with my family, so not a lot of time for
DXing! Fri night early on was very promising with long-path Spaniards at
good strength, particularly 1107, 1485 and 1602 with another trying to push
past Queenstown on 1134. No sign of the Germans, French etc with the
exception of Radio Monte Carlo. Managed about an hours listening around 05
past 0600 though nothing new sprung up. The next 3 days saw conditions
decline sharply, even with just the odd band-scan during the evenings, I
would guess that things were very flat. Did notice R Paradise relay of TBN
good one night and that was certainly the high point along with the
long-pathers. Tried at 1830z one morning and even Vatican 1611 was
struggling!

Tried SW off and on with similar results, did notice Caribbean Beacon mixing
w/Esperanza on 6090 and found them in the clear from 2000 on 11775 till
Spain and KSDA signed-on at 2200. Peaked best 2030 onwards. Noted VOA Sao
Tome at good levels at 2030 on 4950 and was amazed to find 25mb Brazilians
at 1900z(!) on 11785, 11915 & 11925.

Hope someone out there had better luck than I!

I have finally sorted out my tapes from a DXpedition to Lapland in January.
Several interesting stations remain unidentified, and I appreciate any help
you might be able to give in identifying the following stations. First
comes the frequency, then some clues...

North America:

1190 in English, giving telephone number 783-7867 without the area code
(not listed in the NRC AM Radio Log for any station on 1190)
1240 Canadian, frequently using the slogan "AM 1240, the music of your
       life". Presumably CBS News.
1490 in English, the call sounds like KRKC, but heard at 1043 UTC, when
KRKC should according to NRC AM Radio Log be off the air. Has this
       Californian switched to 24hrs?
1570 in English, giving phone number 298-8255 without the area code (not
listed in the NRC AM Radio Log for any station on 1570), heard right
       after WXLN
1590 broadcasting in French, XEVOZ heard simultaneously, heard after 1200
UTC, so unlikely to be from the Caribbean
1600 in English "Urban inspirational radio", the call letters sound like
WWRL, does anyone know for sure if WWRL uses this slogan?

Latin America:

940 in Portuguese, the Rio station seems to identify only as "Sistema LBV
Mundial", does anyone know an address for this aside whats listed in
the WRTH for R Brasil AM 940?
1000 in Spanish, "Cadena La Victoria", mentions Puerto Cabello which is
close to Moron, so could be Radio Mundial Mil from Moron, Venezuela?
1380 in Spanish "Circuito Radial Continente"

Please e-mail me directly at mtm@xxxxxxxxx

1548 presumed Kuwait. 26 March at 0230Z, noticeable het against 1550 here
in Tampa, on the DX390. Took set upstairs and loosely coupled the
Radio West Ferrite loop to the DX390, set filter to 'narrow' (yeah
right...) and tuned to 1547; could copy whole strings of sentences,
commentary about future of Hong Kong, several ment. of VOA news.
Signal had rapid choppy fades of 20 - 30 dB range. Dipped at 0235,
minor peak 0245, nearly gone by 0300. Again on 01 April but somewhat
weaker, occasional words only caught but similar format. Other
nights, can hear het weakly. On the 26th I actually pulled a few
words from 1548 with the unaided DX390, which from LI,NY has only
heard 684 and 1314 with audio, unassisted antenna configuration. I
also heard 684 and trace of 1134 on it from here in FL. I'm using the
RWFL with NO Amp power, or direct connection; the Q is much better
than when the FET preamp is turned on. (Foxworth FL)
1521 KSA (presumed) 0320 on 01 April, Qu'ranic chanting, quite clear,
almost even with 1520 mishmosh, DX390 tuned to 1523/narrow, coupled
from unpowered RW Ferrite Loop, was at threshold of pulling audio
from unaided DX390 which, with NO external antenna is deaf as any RX
i've ever used on MW.(Foxworth, FL)
1530 unID VOA. At 0256 01 April, WSAI with basketball game, signal
underneath with commentary, would rise atop in WSAI fades, mentioned
website 'www.usia.gov', at 0259:25 bumper music, then 'end of our
program until 06 hours eastern caribbean time' is what I thought I
heard. So...is this Sao Tome or some- thing much closer to home? Was
there once a Belize vOA on this freq? Or does Sao Tome relay a
domestic feed? I had tried this fq at 0300 the 26th; there were maybe
4 signals on 1530 then and I couldn't get anything useful that date.
       (Foxworth FL)

Have also hrd the new 1640 and 1680 DFW's here.
