Re: [IRCA] Newfoundland Ultralight Radio Trans-Atlantics & DomesticsReport April 13-14

Allen, a longwire/beverage antenna or two will work well for you if you have lots of room. Just aim it in the direction you want to hear from and you should have very good results. At Cappahayden we have 1000 feet or more, one aimed at Brazil and the other aimed at Europe. You might also want to consider a Kaz antenna. Mine is rectangle about 100 feet long, with the lower course 8 feet above the ground (might need to be higher if Moose visit your land) and the upper course about 25 feet. I don't know if you have trees of that size, but guyed PVC poles could also work. Like the longwire, you aim it is the direction you want to go. Let us know if you need more detials.

Hello To All

Conditions last evening showed a slight increase in better propagation as the K Index lingered at 2 . Another strong performance from many Europeans. No new stations were added to the ULR log this night.

After almost two weeks at this new location, a few observations are apparent regarding propagation and reception here. Of course, the 70 mile move away from the city has rendered a number of new stations heard ,some of which were drowned out by the powerful locals back in St. John’s

The Bermuda outlet on 1160 has now been heard twice on ULR here . In 9 years in St. John’s , Bermuda had only been heard once or twice and that was using a larger size rig. Also the outlets heard from Romania this past while were almost non existent from the city. Overall with the practically RFI free environment , signals strengths of most stations have been markedly increased as well . The Trans-Atlantic signals also tend to stay in much later into the evening . Domestic stations from Canada and the United States are pretty well non-existant in numbers early on and then begin to appear towards the wee hours until dawn.

We are looking forward to the upcoming summer season and planning to erect an antenna setup on the property for our much larger radio rigs.
