There is no limit on how strong a signal can be. Although, I have not
seen anything over S9+60 DB. To give you an example, once a signal gets
over S9+40DB, depending on how good the receiver is, the front end can
start to overload and you may get images from the strong signal. The
better receiers generally can handle more signal before overloading
though. But a signal of S9+55DB is a very strong "Local" signal. I am
5.9 miles from my closest local here, KAST-1370-1KW and generally they
run S9+35DB, unless I phase the two EWE antennas giving me a strong lode
to the NE, in the direction to their towers. Then I can get close to
S9+50 DB. 47watts at 5 miles would not give the receiver S9+55DB. The
signal would be too weak. Easily local-like but not nearly that strong.
