[IRCA] Sony ICF-EX5 "Extra Sensitivity" Portable Now Available on eBay

Hello All,
 
     For those who absolutely need the most sensitive  stock AM-DX portable 
on the planet, the Japanese-market only Sony ICF-EX5 is now  available from the 
eBay vendor "joynetcafe."
 
     The Japanese-market successor to the Sony ICF-S5W,  this unusual 
AM-FM-NSB Shortwave portable has had an unbroken production run  since 1985, 
primarily due to the Japanese demand for extreme AM  sensitivity.  It has an analog 
tuning design with a double-conversion  system, and is one of the very few 
analog designs with a synchronous detector  function.
 
     Fully reviewed on dxer.ca, this portable model has  sensitivity 
comparable to the ICF-S5W, with possibly a slight edge on the upper  frequencies.  For 
DXers in rural areas, this would be a great domestic DX  receiver. However, 
as discovered by Nick Hall-Patch in the urban-RF environment  of Vancouver,  it 
also has a tendency to produce spurious products  when confronted by very 
strong locals.
 
     At a price of $185.00 plus $45 EMS express  shipping, it's doubtful that 
many DXers will place orders for these unique  receivers, with their 
Japanese-language dial markings on the front panel.   But for those who have interest 
in highly-sensitive AM portables, it may be an  option.
 
     For the other AM-DXers who desire great  sensitivity without paying a 
premium price, at a total cost of around $50, it is  possible to modify an 
SRF-39FP Ultralight radio by transplanting a larger  loopstick designed around an 
Amidon 7.5" ferrite bar, thus providing AM  sensitivity clearly superior to the 
ICF-EX5 or any other stock portable.   Three such models have been 
constructed, and a DIY article will soon be  completed for those interested.
