[IRCA] First impressions of 24h IBOCh, from OK

UT Sept 14 from 0450 to 0525 I scanned the MW band several times on the DX-398
in the yard. This was after the EDT midnight start, and from 0500 UT after the
midnight CDT start.

Time IBOC hiss frequency presumed source frequency or station

0450 1090 WTAM-1100
      590 & 610 ? - 600
0500 1110 caught ID from KFAB-1110, ``Now broadcasting in HD``
0501 1120 in KMOX null KFAB-1110
0502 1030 WHO-1040
     1050 under XEG WHO-1040
0503 830 in WCCO null WHAS-840
0504 630 WWLS-640
      650 in WSM null WWLS-640
0505 590 in CMBF null ? - 600
0510 1680 peaks NE ? - 1690 1680 - the strongest of the lot
but no significant analog signal to QRM
0511 1500 in KSTP null WLAC-1510
0515 750 in WSB null WJR-760?

I must say none of this would have been very noticeable if I had not been
looking for it. In most cases I had to null the dominant station in order to
hear the hiss, and it was no problem to hear the dominant stations unless they
were nulled. In most cases I could not get a hiss-match above and below a
certain frequency because the analog signal on one side or the other was too
strong. There could also be some `false-positives` here, noise mistaken for
IBOCh.

I looked for IBOCh accompanying KTOK-1000 OKC, but could not detect it on
990-CBW, or ?-1010 even when aimed at OKC; may not have been on. Did not detect
it on 1190 or 1210 aside WOAI. Of course, some stations that are going to do it
may not have promptly turned it on at local midnight. Things may be worse the
following evening and onward.

Around sunset have previously heard KMOX-1120 and KFAB-1110 doing a number on
each other but this time could not detect any IBOCh from KMOX.

Also looked for it especially on 690 and 710 from WLW but could not detect it.
WOR-710 is DX out here, so not surprising could not hear it on 700 or 720 from
them.

Did not hear any IBOCh in the 1230-1490 regional/local channels, loaded as they
are with piles and piles of analog signals.

This was still before midnight in MDT and PDT, so if KOA or other big signals
from the west are doing it, too early to tell.

Fortunately I don`t have any 50 kW locals, and my three 1 kW locals on 960,
1390 and 1640 aren`t into IBOCh, AFAIK. At this rate, I would say IBOCh won`t
disrupt normal listening much, but can certainly be a problem versus weak
signal DX. 73, Glenn Hauser, Enid OK
