What do you think the minimum spacing might be for a setup like yours?

You mentioned 2 feet separation, but I wonder whether spacings closer 
might also work? I was thinking about 300-ohm or so twin lead as 
something easy to handle. Perhaps zip cord, but spacing is pretty close 
on that. I know that 300-ohm and 450-ohm wire has been used on 2-wire 
beverages for bi-directional reception.

Anyway, it might be cheap and easy to handle. You could make a snip 
towards the end to shorten up one of the wires, and possibly insert some 
value terminating resistor to let the extra end, not normally used on 
that short size act as a counterpoise.

Your ideas have me thinking hard about a portable easy to erect phased 
wires setup.
