Re: [IRCA] ISP Help

Don't know about Outlook, never used it, precisely because it is the target of greatest opportunity for spammers and hackers.  Same for Internet Explorer, only use it when forced to by poorly designed web sites; even less so with Netscape 8's IE mode.

Earthlink has web based email, never use that either, too much trouble, but maybe good for beginners and those on the go.

Earthlink scans for spam of the most abusive kind and intercepts it, sending a notice in its place, should one wish to have it delivered to their email client.  Email delivery to client software is very timely, from what I have observed.

I prescan all my email with a notification program.  It tells me when there's mail in any of my several mail boxes on Earthlink and elsewhere.  It lets me review subjects, senders, even partial content, and flags suspicious or previously rejected email.  All this before I ever download email to a client program that might be affected by viruses.

Not a sales pitch, just my observations.

Earthlink ( http://www.earthlink.net/ ) has a package of programs and

services aimed at those objectives, all part of their standard
membership.

I'm on Earthlink but don't use the services. No reason other than I
do
things my own way.

Overall, Earthlink has become more reliable over the years. They are

usually pretty good with on-line and telephone assistance, but it is
possible to get into a black hole as I did trying to upgrade to high
speed access.

My feeling is that web-based is better than using Outlook, especially
for the new user. Outlook is the default program and it is also low
quality in terms of it's 'resistance' to spam and viruses, which is
minimal. While that is partly because it is the email program default,
it is also poorly defended.

I have used Yahoo quite happily for several years, although I'm now
starting to see intermittent serious slowness which has never been
there before, which is neither my system nor the ISP ( Verizon DSL ).
I've found Hotmail to be mostly indifferent to spam and therefore
fdropped it about 2 years ago.

The beauty of web-based email is its portability and also that the mail
stays on the web - it never resides on the PC, which is a major line of
defense against spams and viruses.
