Victoria may have the TA's and DU's, but this inland valley didn't come away empty during the enhanced propagation overnight. Starting at 1030 UTC the Asian mainland TP's went on a rampage, with 603-HLSA, 657-Pyongyang and 738-BEL2 all hitting S9+ levels at some point during the extended session. They all had Asian co-channels, however, making the session really wacky. The Korean and Chinese signals were so strong that they were coming in at good levels on 7.5 inch loopsticks alone, while a 5" Frequent Flyer FSL antenna set up in the back yard ran wild tracking down extended S9 programming from 657-Pyongyang on a stock D-808.
The first indication of a wild morning was an S7 signal from Pyongyang at 1030 UTC, a full three hours before daybreak. Both 603 and 738 were also in good audio at the time, as were the NHK big guns. The stock D-808 and 5" FSL were set up to record 657 for the next 4 hours in the back yard, and the humble duo delivered some awesome Pyongyang recordings (two of which are linked below). Meanwhile the main effort started at 1330, when a 15" FSL, another 5" Frequent Flyer FSL, a 7.5" CC Skywave SSB Ultralight, the 30" loopstick ICF-2010 spotting receiver and a PVC antenna base were set up at the local Peach Park to escape the neighbor's RFI noise. Asian signals seemed fairly routine until just after 1400, when both 603-HLSA and 738-BEL2 started really going on the warpath. 756-CNR1, 936-Anhui and 963-CRI also came into audio, while the Chinese and Korean co-channels on 603, 657 and 738 started making some noise. Both HLSA and BEL2 hit their strongest levels ever here (S9+) around 1415, while 639-CNR1 came out of nowhere to pound in at S7 around 1418. A quick check was made of the Chinese on 1017, 1035, 1044 and 1053 about this time, but the audio on these frequencies was only touch and go. The 5" Frequent Flyer FSL was set up in place of the 15" monster at 1420, and it promptly tracked down 603, 639, 657, 738 and 972 at good levels, and 963-CRI's Russian at a fair level. At 1430 the Asian big gun signals were still fairly potent, but a park side neighbor let out his two barking dogs, who apparently figured that all my gear was highly subversive. Their constant barking quickly got the attention of their owner, who came out to give me the suspicious eye. It was time to call it a session, and get out of Dodge with all the gear. Overall it was an awesome session, with several legendary signals for this lackluster location.
