So if I'm hearing you correctly...Solder the center conductor to the antenna 
without the braid and solder the center conductor to a lug without the braid 
and attach it to the Balun. Run a section of ground wire to the braid and 
ground that before it feeds in the radio. I hope I have that right as I lack 
a lot radio knowledge.
