[HCDX] foreign LW and MW logs from the last week and one current SW log

Warm greetings to all of you !

Splendid TA conditions on longwave, way above average, with something for the mediumwave DXer too such as armchair copy of Canaries-621 !

At least two new longwave Trans-Atlantics were heard, while at least one of the regulars were heard on the Grundig G5 ultralight barefoot !

On the other hand, Pan-American DX continues to be disappointing, with the lack of auroral conditions, but who cares ? The only real drawback was the lack of music on most stations... The only music player was Morcco's Medi Un, but as you will see below I found out why I have trouble hearing them... Keep reading !

Into the logs:

Trans-Atlantic DX

162 FRANCE France Inter, Allouis NOV 6 0506 UTC - playing an 80s new wave track, then woman in French with comments. Listened briefly with a fair signal, but noisy reception conditions. (Chiochiu*HochelagaMaisonneuve-QC)

171 MOROCCO Medi 1, Nador NOV 6 0214 UTC - playing a plaintive Arabic religious vocal. Good signal, but only poor-fair audio... This station is still active but using weaker modulation than barely a month ago ! This is also a first from the Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve QTH ! (Chiochiu*HochelagaMaisonneuve-QC)

183 GERMANY Europe 1, Flesberg NOV 6 0219 UTC - Laurent Rouquier talked about solidarity saying "L'union fait la force" inside his general culture do-you-know game show. Very good. (Chiochiu*HochelagaMaisonneuve-QC)

189 ICELAND Rikisútvarpid, Gufuskalar NOV 6 0340 UTC - In nicely with classic rock. (Chiochiu*HochelagaMaisonneuve-QC)

198 ENGLAND BBC Radio 4, Droitwich NOV 6 0215 UTC - Man in British Accented English. Good peaks with little in the way of fadings. (Chiochiu*HochelagaMaisonneuve-QC)

207 MOROCCO RTM, Azilal NOV 3 0440 UTC - Initially tentative with weird music that sounded Jewish... I had always thought it was the other Morocco's LW broadcast outlet that I've heard on Nov 3 UTC and had heard it better the two following evenings. Threshold signal from a second broadcaster fading in and out at times leading toward Germany ! NEW ! Morocco # 2 on LW ! (Chiochiu*HochelagaMaisonneuve-QC)

207 GEMRNANY Deutschlandfunk, Münich NOV 3 0440 UTC - Tentative with Classical music QRMing Morocco. Some beacon interference noted as well. (Chiochiu*HochelagaMaisonneuve-QC)

216 FRANCE RMC Première, Romoules NOV 11 2115 UTC - two man talking about the Olympique Marseille soccer team who needs some improovement. Already fair a short while before sunset ! (Chiochiu*HochelagaMaisonneuve-QC)

225 POLAND Polski Radio 1, Solec Kujawski NOV 6 0155 UTC - Polish rock, then man in Polish with comments... Good to fair ! (Chiochiu*HochelagaMaisonneuve-QC)

234 LUXEMBOURG RTL, Beidweler and / or Junglister NOV 5 0325 UTC - two man discussing in French the topic of young children walking alone on the street. Armchair copy ! (Chiochiu*HochelagaMaisonneuve-QC)

252 ALGERIA Alger Chaîne 3, Tipaza NOV 3 0425 UTC - "Les hommes qui passent" by Patricia Kaas followed by a funky Algerian raï number leading to the top-of-the hour news. It's the first time I heard raï on this station ! Too bad 153 Bechar modulates too poorly and 549 Les Trembles is off. (Chiochiu*HochelagaMaisonneuve-QC)

252 IRELAND RTE Radio One, Clarkestown NOV 3 0300 UTC - with a very short national anthem-like piece of music, time pips, then "RTE Radio 1" ID leading to nx. Fairly good and over Algeria for a few minutes ! (Chiochiu*HochelagaMaisonneuve-QC)

270 CZECH REPUBLIC Cezky Rozlas - Radio Zurnal, Topolná NOV 2 0454 - Assumed with an 80s Hair Metal song. Best on 269 in AM Narrow mode to avoid NDB QRM. NEW ! New country ! (Chiochiu*HochelagaMaisonneuve-QC)

585 SPAIN Radio Nacional de España, Madrid NOV 5 0155 UTC - Spanish talk // 621 (623 or, at least, 622 to get away from the awful 620 QRM). Fair with some domestic splatter. (Chiochiu*HochelagaMaisonneuve-QC)

603 FRANCE Lyon NOV 5 0208 UTC - with an old-fashionned French chanson. Poor, but clear with minimal 600 QRM. New ! On MW, France #3, LW and MW included, France #5 ! (Chiochiu*HochelagaMaisonneuve-QC)

621 CANARY ISLANDS Radio Nacional de España, Santa Cruz de Tenerife NOV 5 0210 UTC - two woman discussing in Spanish the topic of their own children. Armchair copy, best mediumwave TA, // a fair 585 heard on the Sanyo MCD-S830 barefoot at the same time ! Best heard on 623 in AM Narrow mode, though readable for the first time on 622 in AM Narrow as well, not only on 623 ! In WVMT-620 null ! Unfortunatly, I can't null WVMT-620 without also nulling the Spanish LAs, but that's another story ! (Chiochiu*HochelagaMaisonneuve-QC)

9580 GABON Africa Numéro Un, Moyabi NOV 6 2024 - the one I was listening to while making this report with request from Africa Numéro Un's listeners... Many of them were calling from France, as this station is also available on 107.5 MHz FM Stereo (USW) in Paris. As far as my log was concerned, SINPO 44433 ! (Chiochiu*Pierrefonds-QC)

North American domestic DX

780 WTME Rumfort, ME NOV 2 2235-2300 EST + - playing an eclectic blend of soft rock, new country and 80s pops with weather forecast for Maine and WEZR-1240 simulcast announcements. Excellent, way over both WBBM and Venezuelan Radio Coro... Definitively using 10,000 Watts daytime power rather than 18 Watts nighttime power ! New ! Looking on Google, I saw they had a DX test with the IRCA a few years ago during semi-auroral conditions... The semi-auroral conditions still allowed the signal to be heard on both coasts. Well... (BC-QC)

Pan-American DX

640 CUBA CMBC, Radio Progreso, Guanabacoa NOV 6 0719 UTC - Good, but mushy, with Cuban Adult Contemporary music program, // CMHG-750. (Chiochiu*HochelagaMaisonneuve-QC)

750 CUBA CMHG, Radio Progreso, Sancti Spiritus NOV 6 0718 UTC - Good to poor with a Cuban Adult Contemp. mx px, // CMBC-640. Over nulled WSB ! (Chiochiu*HochelagaMaisonneuve-QC)

780 VENEZUELA YVNM, Radio Coro, Coro, Falcón NOV 5 0312 UTC - Brutal drop-out to back noise in the middle of their Romantica 7-80 px ! They had similar problems last weekend, while I was listening to them on their stream instead of mediunmwave ! +NOV 6 0720 - Ruta Músical 7-80 with eclectic tropical grooves. Huge, over / under residual WBBM. SINPO 42532. I have some nice canned IDs on tape for review. Chiochiu*HochelagaMaisonneuve-QC)

Additionnal comments:

A few evenings ago, a friend from school came into my brand new Hochelaga-Maisonneuve QTH... He played with my radio and couldn't understand why the strongest signals on LW were beacons and not broadcasters... While his curiosity wasn't too strong, it was a heartbreaking experience, as I seldom show my longwave DX skills to others !

That being said, let's get back to DXing from a Pierrefonds perspective ! An undergoing buzz is killing the AM airwaves right now, from longwave up to shortwave into the 31m band. I can't hear anything except the strongest blockbuster signals ! I hope it will end up by vanishing later in the evening, as I'm not ready to give up on DXing once again, as I did during the last couple of months. I know understand how fragile DXing is as a hobby, as Bruce Conti's experience is, but also that it is just a hobby. The only thing is that these weeks I have more time and I feel much relieved, hence more DXing ! Anyway, we should have some nice longwave and mediumwave Trans-Atlantic DXing this evening, but right now I'm puzzled with that bothersome powerline buzz.

May the good DX be with you !
Bogdan Chiochiu

This report is brought to you by Bogdan Alexandru Chiochiu, DXing from Hochelaga-Maisonneuve (métro Langelier area) using his trusty Sanyo MCD-S830 / PK AM loop for Pan-American and 585 TA DXing, his Sanyo MCD-S830 barefoot for the 780 domestic goodie and all the other ones made on the Sangean ACS 818-CST helped by either the PK's Shielded Magnetic longwave loop or the PK's Shielded Magnetic mediumwave loop (PK AM loop). The 9580 Gabon log on shortwave was made here in Pierrefonds using the Sangean ACS 818-CST / random wire combo !
