[HCDX] No time frame yet for introduction of Broadcast Bill in Indian Parliament

No time frame yet for introduction of Broadcast Bill in Parliament

The Information and Broadcasting Ministry is yet to fix a time frame for introduction of the Broadcast Services Regulation Bill in Parliament, but sources confirmed that senior officials had three round of meetings with stakeholders from different media companies.

"In accordance with the directions of Minister Ambika Soni, I&B secretary Raghu Menon has already held three meetings with the industry stakeholders to accelerate the process of the consideration of the Bill," says a source in the I&B Ministry.

Soni had told the officials to work towards a consensus so that the legislation which was placed on the Ministryâs website in 2007 can be given a final shape. She has made it clear that the Government is not in favour of any draconian steps and, thus, wants this to be done through dialogue and interaction.

Efforts to bring forward a comprehensive broadcast legislation had been going on since 1997.

Meanwhile, the Government is studying a proposal for allowing some âwatershed hoursâ for telecasting adult content on television channels. This could be late in the night or even in the wee hours of dawn, I&B sources told indiantelevision.com.
