Peru, 5039.18, Radio Libertad, 1039-1115, Don't know if I was having
antenna problems or a shortwave fadeout, but accidentally tuned
to this freq and noted Libertad with a fair signal while a male was in
Spanish comments between music. This was totally unexpected because Rebelde
just 14 KHz lower was very weak when I tune there (5025KHz) a few seconds
earlier. I usually have just a weak carrier and weaker audio from Libertad.
At 1049, Libertad's signal improves to a good level. It's getting scary
here all of the sudden. The sun is high on the horizon now and I am being
blasted by a Peruvian station. It's nice! Signal dropped to threshold by
1115.(Chuck Bolland, July 23, 2009)
Note: The signal improvement from 1049 only lasted a couple of minutes. I
dropped Libertad and scanned a few Peruvian and
Bolivian frequencies at that time- La Voz de la Selva, Radio Sicuani, and
Radio Maranon - and noted a similar improvement, but by 1053 the signals had
all dropped to fair or poor. I figured Bolivia's Radio Logos might be
fading in too, but I only heard a Brazilian on 4865.10 KHz. Maybe I am
exaggerating this phenomena because I am usually walking my dogs around the
block at this time and leave the radio alone. Consequently, I miss any
brief openings that might occur after sunrise here in Montura Ranch Estates.
This morning however, I left my receiver tuned to 4835.40 KHz as I typed
the above and at 1108, Radio Maranon faded back in from being nil heard to a
fair level. I am seriously thinking about changing my exercise routine to a
different time at least for one or two days during the week. I have too
many early morning responsibilities to make it a regular change however.
At 1115 Radio Maranon is still at a fair level. I checked the higher band
of 9 megs for a minute just to see what it was doing? I could not hear
anything on 9680 KHz where RRI Jakarta is usually booming in, and
Radio Australia on 9580 KHz was not at the armchair quality I usually have
for it either. There is definitely something strange going on this
morning?
At 1121 I went to recheck Radio Libertad on 5039.18 KHz and still heard it,
but the signal was now threshold. Still on 4835.41 KHz, Radio Maranon was
readable at a fair level; but I could tell there wasn't going to be much
more signal left in a few minutes. The noise was increasing and Maranon's
signal was being gobbled up by it. So I decided to secure the receiver and
take my dogs for their walk.
