[HCDX] logs - among my best groundwave DX

Warm greetings to all of your, fellow DXers and dear friends !

This afternoon I played a little bit more with the Australian PK AM loop next to my Sanyo MCD-S830. One of my dreams is to pick up daytime groundwave signals in excess of 250 km, in the 250-400 km area ! Well, I'm glad to see it happened once more ! Here are the logs:

550 WDEV Waterbury, VT 06/20 1515 EDT (1915 UTC) - man with comments regarding the C&W tunes played and IDing as WEVD Radio Vermont AM and FM. Actually GOOD using the Sanyo MCD-S830 / PK AM loop combo, poor but quite clear using the Sanyo MCD-S830 barefoot. Probably beyond Burlington as it is much weaker than WVMT-620 which has a city grade signal in the Montreal area and beyond ! (BC-QC)

590 WROW Glenmont, NY 06/20 1530 EDT (1930 UTC) - forecast mentioning a possibility of T-storms both this afternoon and this evening followed by a nice ID. Poor but clear using the Sanyo MCD-S830 / PK AM loop ! Very threshold and mushy using the Sanyo MCD-S830 barefoot... The Albany area (where Glenmont is located) is roughly 300 km from Montreal making it one of my alltime best DAYTIME GROUNDWAVE DX CATCHES ! (BC-QC)

Regular foreign logs

Trans-Atlantic DX

171 MOROCCO Médi 1, Nador JUN 15 0145 - playing a wide array of Arabic music and female announcements in Arabic. Better heard with the Sangean ACS 818-CST / PK LW loop combo outdoor, since a weird buzz harmed reception both at my regular QTH in Edward Higgins and at the Céres park... This buzz sounded like powerline noises. (Chiochiu-QC)

183 GERMANY Europe 1, Felsberg JUN 15 0147 - interview with a singer noted in passing at a nice level. (Chiochiu-QC)

216 FRANCE RMC Info, Romoules JUN 16 0305 - weather forecast for various cities that included a high of 25 C in Marseilles which isn't too bad, considering global warming. Very poor, but partially readable and not heard in a while ! (Chiochiu-QC)

Pan-American DX

750 VENEZUELA YVKS, RCR, Caracas, Distrito Federal JUN 20 0240 - Man in Spanish with a good signal in jumble... Clear enough though to understand words like "ahóra" (right now) and other ones. QRM from both WSB and CMHG ! This spring/summer is the first time ever I listen to YVKS-750 during the month of June ! (Chiochiu-QC)

750 CUBA CMHG, Radio Progreso, Sancti Spiritus JUN 20 0249 - Romantic Spanish vocals, poor-fair but atop WSB/YVKS ! Semi-regular even during the off-season months (first time heard in May of 2006) but almost always mushy ! (Chiochiu-QC)

780 VENEZUELA YVNM, Radio Coro, Coro, Falcón JUN 20 0242 - Man in Spanish with religious comments. Briefly good - best ever reception of this station during the month of June ! + JUN 20 0310 - with Romantica Siete Ochenta carrying Romantic Spanish vocals -> poor in jumble with residual remnants of the nulled WBBM/CFDR mix ! Never cameback with the strength noted at 0242 UTC (2242 EDT) during the whole evening and was too tired to pursuie DXing after local midnight ! During the off-season summer months, Radio Coro is usually stronger after local midnight EDT ! Still amazed to hear something from the south with such a ridiculously low solar activity ! (Chiochiu-QC)

Additionnal comments:
with the solar activity so low, I can't wait for mid-August when condx dramatically improve... That being said, this season sporadic-E activity was very poor in North America, but exceptionnal in Europe with a double-hop Es opening on FM (!) between Romania and Morocco noted by DX Colleague Zvartoshu in Bucharest (which wasn't interested in meeting me) !

Thanks to all of you who helped me in identifying the Spanish mysterious signal on 1360 kHz... I will keep an ear on it ! Is Radio Catatumbo Internacional still active ? I know the CIDX president, Sheldon Harvey, heard Radio Catatumbo Internacional on 1360 kHz from Maracaibo out of the YV estado of Zulia several decades ago !

Before I leave, I would like to inform Bruce Conti and other of you as well how difficult is it to receive something from South America OTHER THAN Colombia AND Venezuela period from locations other than the New England and Canadian Maritimes area ! With this fact in mind, some of you wonder how the DXer can still going after new targets ! Well, it's a question of inventing new places within Colombia and Venezuela... With this in mind, since it is unlikely that I'll get Ecuador or Argentina on mediumwave anytime soon, I decide to consider every new YV estado as a new place ! I logged 6 YV states (Distrito Federal, Falcón, Zulia, Anzoátegui, Sucre and Aragua) and would dearly love to hear all 23 (24 including DF) ! This is to motivate myself to go after new SAs within the relatively easily available country of Venezuela ! I wonder if, the same way we include XE estados into IDXD issues, if we could include YV estados as well, dear Bruce ! For exemple Radio Coro is in Coro which is located in the "estado" of Falcón and Caracas is in Distrito Federal ! Every time I look through an IDXD issue, I only see the Venezuelan cities, never the Venezuelan states, even though Venezuela is divided into 23 or 24 states just like Mexico or the USA ! Imagine how frustrating is for a midwestern DXer where 99% of his DX comes from either Canada or the USA to count only new stations and not new provinces or states ! It helps having goals less random than just picking up new Venezuelans or new domestic US or Canadian broadcasters ! Just some feed for thoughts ! Well...

This report is brought to you by Bogdan Alexandru Chicochiu DXing from Pierrefonds (Montreal's West Island), QC using his Sanyo MCD-S830 / PK AM loop combo for mediumwave and his Sangean ACS 818CST / PK's Shielded Magnetic LW loop for longwave !

May the good DX be with you !
Bogdan Chiochiu
