Johannesburg - A Malawi radio station supportive of the opposition has been 
forced to shut following a police raid and the arrests of three staff, the 
station's vice chairman said on Wednesday. 

"The police effectively closed the radio station last night. The staff and 
journalists are trying to get access into the premises," Tony Mita said. 

Joy Radio, owned by former president Bakili Muluzi, was raided by police 
hours before polls opened for the country's national elections on Tuesday. 
The station was allowed to broadcast music during the day, but was taken 
off the air on Tuesday evening, Mita said. 

"The arrested people would be charged with breaching the parliamentary 
and presidential act for campaigning after the campaigning period has 
ended," police spokesperson Willie Mwaluka said. 

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) condemned the arrest of the 
journalists and demanded their immediate release. 

Condemn the silencing 

"We condemn the silencing of Joy Radio and effective ban on its election 
coverage imposed by police," said Tom Rhodes, CPJ Africa programme co-
ordinator. 

"The three employees should be released immediately and the station 
allowed to resume news broadcasting." 

According to the Media Institute of Southern Africa, journalists from the 
station were arrested in connection with the repeat broadcast of a 2008 
political programme that contradicted government views that the country's 
food supply was secure. 

The radio station has been the main campaign weapon of the opposition 
ahead of the elections, in which Muluzi is backing opposition leader John 
Tembo against incumbent President Bingu wa Mutharika. 

The arrests marred the peaceful election in the impoverished southern 
African country.
