Azerbaijani Parliamentary Vice-Speaker Bahar Muradova considers banning 
broadcasting of foreign radio stations on national frequencies as correct.

"Banning broadcasting of foreign radio stations on national frequencies must 
not be discussed. Azerbaijan does not stop broadcasting of foreign radio 
stations. Their broadcasting has been brought into conformity with 
legislation. Everybody must accept the National Television & Radio Council's 
(NTRC) decision," Muradova said at a parliamentary meeting on Feb. 10.

On Jan. 1, BBC, Radio Liberty and Voice of America radio stations stopped 
broadcasting on Azerbaijani national frequencies after the ANTRC decision. 
The Law on Television Broadcast states that foreign stations can only 
broadcast on satellite, Internet and cable networks.

At present in Baku, U.S. Broadcasting Council officials are holding 
discussions to resume broadcasting of Radio Liberty and Voice of America 
radio stations on Azerbaijani national frequencies.

The U.S. State Department, Council of Europe, OSCE Baku and other 
international organizations expressed their concern about the decision to 
ban foreign radio stations from broadcasting on national frequencies, and 
asked the council to reconsider its decision.

Muradova said that this issue has become a topical issue and been turned 
into irony.

"Supremacy of legislation is the most important factor in Azerbaijan," the 
vice-speaker said.

 Under the Azerbaijani president's decree, the NTRC has been 
commissioned to license TV and radio channels since 2005.
