Subject: [HCDX] Glenn Hauser logs March 13, 2019

CUBA. 6100 & 6060 & 5040, March 13 at 0610, the final? RHC English
hour is running on these frequencies, all with loud enough modulation,
while the other pair of The Cuban Five are OFF tonight: 6000 & 6165,
the latter bearing weak NHK Arabic via FRANCE instead. Something`s
always wrong at RHC.

Logs
** CUBA. In previous report, even I was confused in assessing the RHC
situation. Let`s try again with this graf corrected to replace it:

9720, Tuesday March 12 at 2145, is NOT on the air, despite Sunday
having moved English-allegedly-to-Africa into the 21-22 hour instead
of 22-23. But today at *2154 the RHC IS starts playing, until 2201
morphing into theme and opening --- French! Then at 2245 check the
second half of this hour is back in --- Brazuguese! i.e. both an hour
*later* than they had been until March 10. 9720 at 2317 check is in -
-- English! also an hour *later* rather than earlier, which would be
the *logical* change when DST start, and now // 5040 which has
logically shifted an hour earlier. So now English starts at 1 am in
RSA where 9720 is supposedly aimed, 23-24 UT, instead of only midnight
local. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)

** CUBA.
Something`s
always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 13628.295, March 13 at 1426, RHC spur with some music
audible, and weaker match on the opposite side of source 13700-AM, at
13671.69 or so; second order at twice the distance, 56.60 below, JJBBA
on 13643.40. Its match on the plus side computed circa 13756.60 is
totally blown away by WINB DRM noise! Come on, WINB, give the RHC
spurs a chance! Maybe we can hear that one on a weekend. But when, o
when, will RHC resume huge FM spurblobs all over the 13 MHz band? That
would give WINB a run for its money. Something`s always wrong at RHC
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 101.5-WBFM, March 13 at 1723 UT check, KOCD Okeene is
*still* cutting on the air for 7 seconds of modulation, 25 seconds off
the air, over & over; now in its ninth day at least of doing this
since I first noticed March 5, but probably considerably previous. Any
listeners they had before must have abandoned them by now; but did not
a one of them inform HQ of the problem? This non-LP transmitter ought
to be audible at source KWDW-LP, SW OKC. I`m certainly not going to,
as tracking this incompetence is a lot more fun than listening to
gospel-huxtering in Spanish (Glenn Hauser, Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 7340, March 13 at 1745, Radio Martà on surprise new daytime
frequency, fair and // much stronger 11860, 11930 and 13820, all of
which are atop jamming but none yet on 7340. Maybe a test? Tnx to tip
by Ethan Best, KC9YDN to the WOR iogroup at 1722:

``During a midday band scan I noted at 1710z Radio Marti on the
unusual frequency of 7340 kHz. ID heard at 1715z. SINPO 55555 here in
central Indiana. The transmission is still on at time of posting``

But Steve McGreevy, CA, was hearing nothing on 7340; intermittent or
just not propagating that far? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 1972 monitoring: Richard Langley

** U S A. 5830, March 13 at 1508, WTWW-1 night frequency is still
running at S9+20, not yet on 9475 past 10 am local; it all depends on
when Ted gets around to QSYing that transmitter. Strangely, no daytime
signal today from 5085 WTWW-2 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 7490, March 13 at 1512, no signal from WWCR-2; already
changed to 12160 at S9-S6 with flutter and vs CODAR. EiBi still shows
WWCR 7490 until 1600 Mon-Sat, -1500 Sunday, but he`s still not updated
since pre-DST March 5. WWCR`s own program sked as of March 11 shows
the transition daily at 1500 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1480, March 13 at 0556-0606 UT, Vietnamese still being the
main language audible here, i.e. KBXD Dallas. I decide to compare it
to the Vietnamese always on 1560 from KGOW Houston market, which is
now dominant and easily heard thanx to STA of ND(?) instead of
strictly direxional nights SE into the Gulf (of Mexico, not Tonkin)
toward S America where it used to be a common DX catch when
desportive. By golly, sounds like the same programming on both, M&W
chatting with lots of laughter, bits of music, and no ToH ID from
either. But far out of synch; listening with two sets of headphones
upon my head from the DX-398 and the R-75, I can`t decide which is
delayed, as recognizing keywords in VV is not that easy, and it`s high
time to snooze (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 7332-USB, March 3 at 0606-0607, random bandscanning
finds something akin to what I logged 5+ hours earlier on 6903-USB:
this time it`s a YL voice with fonetik alfanumeric message, and I just
catch the last part of it: ``OTOLSOBRAVL6 --- this concludes a message
of 30 characters --- this is C8W --- out``

As for 6903, Ron Howard replies with research from Russia:

Hi Glenn, Found via online search, for your consideration:
http://www.wunclub.narod.ru/files/eam.html

". . . or concatenated with additional alpha-numeric characters to
produce alpha-numeric strings that total 28 characters (the most
common length; 30-characters prior to 01 Oct 2000; 26-characters prior
to 01 Oct 1998) . . ." "EAM" is Emergency Action Message.

Below is also something to consider, via HFU HF Underground.
https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php?topic=37742.0

6903 USB, October 03, 2017, 2111 UTC --- I've been hearing what sounds
like EAM broadcast on 6903 USB starting 2029z on 6903 USB. While these
messages were being broadcast I tuned in 11175; 8992; and 6988; the
messages on 6903 were not simulcast on those other frequencies
(nothing at all heard on 8008). Other sources indicate that these are
transmissions for a Skymaster exercise. Logged - Northeast Ohio

Re: 6903 USB, October 04, 2017, 1517 UTC --- Several logs for this
frequency and 6988 kHz USB in the Other and Utility forums. Both 6903
and 6988 kHz have been logged in the past with EAMs - radio operator
training as well as 68xx kHz frequencies``

There`s more: the EAM training season must be in full swing: 5074-USB,
March 13 at 0613, just hear the end of what sounds like another EAM:
``November, Oscar, out`` by OM voice; squeezed in between WTWW 5072+
spur and 5085 fundamental. I assume these messages once decoded will
be inconsequential in a non-emergency; one-time pads, or what? (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 7575-USB, March 13 at 1511, 2-way in Spanish, ``cambio``
but no reply heard. A good choice as NO broadcasters are now listed
anywhen on 7575 (but not good during 7570 WRMI usage). EiBi, however
shows something intriguing nearby from Spain we are not likely to
hear: ``7572 0840-0850 Mo-Fr E Ejercito del Aire S E to`` = Toledo? A
net or broadcast, USB or what? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 9985.035V, March 13 at 1502, S9+10 of Korean from RFA
via disputed site; wobbles slightly so hard to measure exactly. This
bigsig is typical of what we get from Tinang, Philippines, when on the
21 degree azimuth antennas toward North Korea, beam which carries on
across the USA: northern edge of Alaska, Michigan to South Carolina;
while the approx. azimuth from NMI to P`yongyang is 335 degrees. The
registered Az. on record for Tinian 9985 were 325 and 329 degrees,
resulting in much weaker sig here, not to mention power disparity of
nominal 100 kW vs 250 from Tinang (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)

Logs
** BRAZIL. 11780, March 13 at 0137, RNA mentioning stations relaying
this program in Pernambuco, TC for 22:38. S9/S9+20 good and hardly
anything else on 25m except stronger RHC on 11840, 11760, 11700,
11670. Meanwhile, RNA is not on 6180, leaving it clear for CRI English
via Cuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 6165 & 6100 & 6060 & 6000, Tue March 12 at 0631, all four RHC
English, at a variety of modulation levels, remain on this hour (but
not 5040), unlike last night, when due to EDT(?) only one of them did.

So here we go, utter confusion at RHC about how to cope with clock
time changes. Not checked morning or afternoon of Monday March 11 as I
was busy preparing and recording WORLD OF RADIO 1973, but by Tuesday
March 12 I find things quite different than they were on Sunday, first
day of EDT. Something`s always wrong at RHC.

9720, March 12 at 2145, is NOT on the air, despite Sunday having moved
English-allegedly-to-Africa into the 21-22 hour instead of 22-23. But
today at *2154 the RHC IS starts playing, until 2201 morphing into
theme and opening --- French! Then at 2245 check the second half of
this hour is back in --- Brazuguese! i.e. where they had been until
March 10. 9720 at 2317 check is in --- English! Where it was before,
but now // 5040 which has shifted an hour earlier. So now English
again starts at 1 am in RSA where it is supposedly aimed, 23-24 UT.
Something`s always wrong at RHC.

15370, March 12 at 2144, RHC is in Spanish along with 9640 and very
poor 11760; and still at 2211 check (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)

** CUBA. 5990, March 13 at 0101, CRI English relay starting news, but
cut to dead air at 0101.5, and cut carrier at 0102.4*. Supposed to be
turned off before 0100. Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) See also BRAZIL

** CUBA. 11670, March 13 at 0139, RHC Spanish is suptorted < 11700 <
11840 < 11760 in strength and modulation. Something`s always wrong at
RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 6165 // 6000, UT Wed March 13 at 0143, RHC English with Arnie
Coro, must be `DXers Unlimited Mitweek Edition`, but undermodulated on
the upper and suptorted unusable on the lower. Something`s always
wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MALI. 17630 // 13685, March 12 at 1439, two JBA signals, matching
for the two CRI English relay frequencies both active today. Nothing
much else audible on 16m except JBA carriers on 17705 & 17615+ Saudis
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 1230, March 12 at 1351 UT, WBBZ Ponca City on groundwave
ID in passing as ``Sunny 104.7``, so still branding as defunct FM
format; I can also get 104.7 which IDs as ``New 104-7, The Bull``, NOT
// and playing different music. 1230 does run a legal WBBZ ID at 1401
UT.

Another check around 1830 UT finds the same situation, but also with
``WBBZ Sunny 12-30`` IDs. I already dealt at length with this strange
situation in my log almost 5 months ago, Oct 17, as also in DXLD 18-43
http://www.w4uvh.net/dxld1843.txt
So one of our rare W-call legacy stations is still confused about
identity (Glenn Hauser, Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ROMANIA. 6130 // 7325, March 13 at 0104, RRI English here, rather
than 7375 as I logged last night; and nothing now on 7375; too much
storm noise to detect any jamming around either (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 7295-AM, March 12 at 2215, `CQ 40 AM from K3IAM in New
Mexico``. Gave callsign only once, during a fade and seemingly
unfonetikaly, so not positive of it, but QRZ.com lookup entering K3IAM
puts him in Arizona, close, maybe needs updating:

``AA7ST USA flag USA
alias for: K3IAM
John C Smith
4697 W Cholla Bluff Dr
Marana, AZ 85658-4262 USA``

ARRL lookup gets no results for K3IAM, but agrees on AA7ST. He made
one more CQ and then gave up. Sorry, no transmitter here or I might
have answered. What exactly do we mean by ``alias``, legally in this
context? No mention of AA7ST (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 1973 monitoring: barely audible to

during electrical storm. Next:

** U S A. 7490.17, UT Wed March 13 at 0052, WBCQ `Available Time Slot`
with another `Allan Weiner Worldwide` playback as he is ranting
against civil engineers.

5130.47, UT Wed March 13 at 0053, WBCQ with something about pathways
at Valley Forge. `Amateur Radio Roundtable` would not be starting
until 0100, and *still* nothing shown on the schedule for 00-01 UT
weekdays (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1480, March 13 at 0155, YL in Vietnamese more or less atop
the jumble, into music; presumed KBXD Dallas. I ask again, is it
partly-, or all-Vietnamese now? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 4980-USB, March 12 at 0634, 2-way in Spanish, weak but
nothing from Venezuela or Okeechobee to block it; and if this is a
fixed band, then not an intruder. Mentions ``Italia 28`` a couple of
times, but doubt that`s a flight (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 6903-USB, March 13 at 0054, secret alfanumeric message
tuned in as ``I say again: ZMCUZOEUGVHWIDPQ2AKJ6J3NIPGOWL --- this
message consists of 30 characters --- this is C3Q --- out``

Quite clearly enunciated, and double-checked for copy accuracy, but --
Guess what, entered into yahoo and google searches, NO documents
found. Could have been a pirate pretending to be military/security
agency, but sounded quite serious and constrained (Glenn Hauser, OK,
DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 9985.033, March 12 at 1510, Korean at S3-S5, i.e. Radio
Free Asia, which QSL Dept. claims to be active from SAIPAN again
(originally scheduled as neighboring Tinian), but Ivo Ivanov and I are
not so sure. Anyhow it`s from a site with imprecise frequency accuracy
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Logs
** CHINA [non]. 15700, March 11 at 1447, China Plus relay via CUBA is
S9+40 but suptorted; wiggle that patchcord!

6180, March 12 at 0143, another such relay is also suptorted.
Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)

** CUBA [and non]. 15140, March 10 at 1901, RHC`s first English of the
day has shifted one hour earlier as expected, and any frequency change
will have to wait a month. More surprisingly, `DXers Unlimited` is
already starting at hourtop instead of about :09 past as originally
scheduled. No news today?

9720, March 10 at 2113, the second English hour has also shifted 60
minutes earlier to 21-22 instead of 22-23; nominally for Africa, but
bigsig back thisaway and also has stayed on same frequency. This makes
a lot more sense than 22- or 23- UT if Africa really be the target;
now only by East Africa Time is it after local midnite. 2113 program
is already mailbag, presumably following DXUL circa 2101. At 2132
Spanish music not // weaker 9640 & 9535 in Spanish service. Original
B18 sked when both of the Bejucals started at 22, had 9640 as only 50
kW at 110 degrees, and 9535 as 100 kW at 230 degrees; yet 9640 is
always much stronger than 9535 here.

Last November, Wolfgang Bueschel had this detailed info about 9720
quoting Ivo Ivanov`s style:
``2200-2300 9720 BAU 100 kW 130 degrees SoAf English, new time slot,
antenna Bauta #3, HRS4/4/0.8, 160 degrees minus 30 degree slewed, wb``

21-22 on that schedule for 9720 had French and Portuguese; unknown yet
what became of them, shoved up to 20-21? Or swapped with 22-23? 9720
is gone at 2246 check. Something`s always wrong at RHC.

Arnie`s other DX program, `En Contacto` just started at 2245 Sunday
March 10, ending by 2259, earlied an hour, on 5040, 9535, 9640, 11760,
11840 at least, and something on 15370. Has RHC`s website Spanish
program schedule been updated?
http://www.radiohc.cu/interesantes/programacion
Of course not! Subtract one UT hour for correct times of all programs.
Something`s always wrong at RHC. (And BTW it includes overnight when
SW is supposed to be silent, with another repeat of En Contacto Monday
at 0735, meaning 0635.)

15730, Sun Mar 10 at 2246 confirmed in Esperanto, S9+10 and suptorted,
also an hour earlier, from 2230 ex-2330.

6165, March 11 at 0621, RHC is OFF, clearing frequency for NHK Arabic
via FRANCE; RHC English also missing from 6100, 6060 and 5040 --- only
6000 is still on but suptorted modulation spikes, unusable.
Something`s always wrong at RHC. So during DST of EDT, is RHC
attempting to keep English going until 0700 or not? It`s still
starting by 0100 as checked March 12 at 0140 on 6000 & 6165. Or could
they have moved that up to start at 0000?

15140, March 11 at 1822, RHC Arabic has also been advanced one hour,
the announcer sounding like he is choking, suptorted to boot (Glenn

** OKLAHOMA. 1170, Sunday March 10 at 2114 UT, KFAQ Tulsa with pillow
commercial during `Our American Stories`, the show I ran across on
KXEL and hoped to be non-political and non-religious. KFAQ sked shows
three relief airings each weekend, different or same episodes?
https://www.1170kfaq.com/show-lineup
Sat at 15 UT, Sun at 10 & 21 UT for two hours each.

On website I see they carry/link to KOTV News on [virtual] 6, and
radio-locator says Griffin is the licensee; I had not realized KFAQ is
jointly owned with KOTV & KWTV (Glenn Hauser, Enid, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)

** ROMANIA [and non]. 6130, March 12 at 0144, RRI in English, but with
ACI from Spanish 2-way on 6131-USB; also some lite stray Cuban pulse
jamming on the plus side. RRI OK with LSB tuning, but I don`t know how
the SS put up with the minus-one QRAM. Anyhow, the Cubans lose no love
for the Romanians, who overthrew the yoke of Communist oppression 29+
years ago and summarily executed the dictator.

7375, March 12 at 0144, tuned here first and thought it was RRI in
English, underneath heavy Cuban pulse jamming, which is ``needed`` for
only one hour at 22-23 when Radio Martà is on it. Such are the risks
of time-sharing a frequency with RM. Trouble is, when uplooked later,
RRI English to NAm at 01-02 is scheduled on 7325, not 7375, so either
they or more likely I was on wrong frequency, which sounded like same
programming but I did not match to 6130 on two different receivers.
Need to check next night (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SPAIN. 12030, Monday March 11 at 1824, REE is really in Russian,
mentioning Madrid, then playing a song in Spanish; 1829 Spanish ID,
PSA by MinEx that Spaniards abroad need to register about something by
30 March, and Spanish show `Europa Abierta` about Brexit.

At beginning of B18 season, after schedule shuffle, there was some
controversy whether REE was really in Russian. WRTH now shows this M-F
at 1800-1830 on 12030 to ME and IndOc, and 11685 for WAf/Atlantic,
i.e. nowhere to be finding very many Russians --- because Noblejas
simply has no azimuth toward Moskva? 11685 however is vacant, as are
the other two to Americas, 9690 & 11940 which do not come up until
1900 on weekdays. There are a bunch of scattered once-a-week Russian
REE broadcasts via WRN Moscow on 738 kHz, each at a different time of
day (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** TURKEY. 12035.7, March 11 at 1423, it`s a skewed-frequency day for
VOT English, VP; 1424 can barely perceive the IS (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1972 monitoring: confirmed Sunday March 10 at
2130 on WRMI 7780, very poor.

Also confirmed UT Monday March 11 after 0130 on WRMI 5950 & 9395, both
unusually S9+10 but 5950 always softer-sounding; ex-0230 at the time
occupied by R. Tirana the other six days of week. (And R. Tirana
resumed UT Tue March 12 during this semihour.)

WOR also confirmed UT Monday March 11 at NEW time 0230 on WRMI 7780,
very poor. (And BTW, WRN makes clear and confirmed that their N
American service by satellite and webcast stays at same 0230 UT
despite out DST, not changing until Europe does at monthend.)

Confirmed UT Monday March 11 at 0300 on Area 51 webcast, and at 0318
on WBCQ 5130.409, poor

Confirmed UT Monday March 11 at 0330 on WRMI webcast, as always
following ``Hallelujah`` song filler cut off at 0330, while 9955 was a
JBA carrier a few minutes earlier.

Not confirmed Monday March 11 at 2230 on WRMI 9955, when WOR would
have appeared ex-2330 except it was gone already last week; instead we
hear music fill 2229 past 2230 and still at 2255.

seconds to spare!) for first airing UT Tuesday March 12 on WRMI 7730,
very good; and NEW immediate repeat Tue at 0100 on WRMI 7780,
S9+10/20, better than usual on theif NE antenna. Next:

** U S A. 17775, Monday March 11 at 1450, JBA carrier, presumably KVOH
now starting an hour earlier at 1400 UT to stay on from 7 am PDT, but
still a JBA carrier at 1819 check. At 0319 UT March 12, KVOH websked
still claims to start at 1500 UT and shows target Cuba as 5 hours
behind instead of 4 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 5002-5003, March 11 at 0625, some uteblob is far too
close for comfort to WWV; can even hear some of it with LSB tuning.
Hope this is only an anomaly (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1973,
