Logs
** ALGERIA. 576, Nov 28 at 0052 UT, JBA carrier among many in TA
search, but this is of special interest. 1 kHz tone test has been
widely reported last few nights in eastern half of North America as
very strong unID. Now I also detect a ``carrier`` on 575, i.e. the
lower half of a 1 kHz tone, but too much slop from WIBW on 577. My
previous comments about this:

Maybe Bechar, Algeria, 400/200 kW. Altho listed in WRTH, it hasn`t
been reported much (any?) despite the common 531 and 549 Algies, so
maybe this one is just being reactivated? Bechar is also where they
are supposedly building a new SW site.

mwlist says: ``576 ALG Chaîne 1 24h Kenadsa (Béchar) * 400 reported
irregularly active in Mar 2016 // 153 198 891 909 1071``

Europeans, if not North Americans, could easily get a DF bearing on
this, even triangulate it by simply using handheld portables --- too
easy? 73, (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CANADA. 326 kHz, Nov 28 at 0718 UT, dash and YQK ID from ND beacon,
which is 200 watts from Kenora, Ontario.

335 kHz, Nov 28 at 0721 UT, dash and YLD ID from ND beacon, which is
1000 watts from Chapleau, Ontario (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENIING
DIGEST)

** CANADA. 2749-USB, Nov 27 at 0814 UT, marine weather by YL in
French, VP. Per EiBi at 0810-0830 it`s VCS Halifax but in English via
sm site = Sambro NS.

2598-USB, Nov 27 at 0816 UT, YL too weak to detect language. EiBi says
at 0807-0833 it`s VOJ, Port aux Basques NL, English & French via sv
site = Stephenville NL (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CANADA. 6030, follow-up Nov 27 from Harold Sellers about CFVP after
I asked him to check whether it`s off the air:

``[WOR] CFVP-6030 Calgary Canada off the air --- Recently listeners
had reported that CFVP seemed to be off the air. Normally I can hear
CFVP during daylight hours from my home in British Columbia, but I
wasn’t hearing it either. The mediumwave station, CKMX 1060, “Funny
1060”, has been audible here, so the problem was only with the
shortwave outlet.

Today I finally made contact with an engineer at BellMedia, who owns
the stations. This is what he said:

"I have just been informed the site was target of copper theft that
disabled CFVP. Transmitter underwent some repairs, and some work is in
progress on the site to restore the missing grounding. It should be
back in service within the next few days.”

Let’s keep listening for its return. Harold Sellers, Vernon, BC``

Tony VK2IC Magon replies, ``The best idea to replace the ground mat is
with barbed wire`` (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 5040, Nov 28 at 0714, RHC English is still on here, only //
6145 which normally lasts until 0800. Something`s always wrong at RHC
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PERU. 5980, Nov 27 at 2355, carrier clearly under Cuban wall of
noise jamming not against OCB, until cuts off at 2355:25.5* which is 2
seconds earlier than yesterday. Further obs will determine whether a
steady slippage or random variation in Radio Chaski timer`s
auto-termination. Nothing else is known to be on 5980 at this time
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SPAIN. 12030, Thu Nov 28 at 1557, REE earworm IS is VG, but VP on
// 11685; the eastern-hemisphere frequencies start at 1600 weekdays;
no signals yet on 9690 & 11940 western-hemisphere which don`t start
until 1900 weekdays (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** THAILAND. 9940, Nov 28 at 1301, HSK9, temporary(?) English segment,
I think but too poor to copy at S3-S5. I wanted to compare signal to
before 1300 as signal thisaway should have improved (Glenn Hauser, OK,
DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 2887-USB, Nov 27 at 0812, New York ATC poor assigning flite
level, selcal tones. Per EiBi this is a Caribbean area frequency, from
site at Barnegat, New Jersey (which is way down the coast between Toms
River and Tuckerton) (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2009 monitoring: confirmed Wednesday November
27 from 2200:20 on WBCQ 7490.06, S9-S7, but 9330 is off.

Also confirmed UT Thursday Nov 28 at 0100 on WRMI 7780, better than
usual at S9+20 but fading down somewhat by 0120. Preceded by Zorba
tune at 0059, Biermann ID at 0059.5 and a fragment of some other
intrusive audio as WOR playback starts.

WOR 2010 should be ready by early UT Nov 29, and start SWairing late
UT Fri Nov 29 at 2300 on WRMI 9955; UT Sat Nov 30 at 0130 on WRMI
5010, 5850 and 7780 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9330.00, Nov 27 at 1853, World`s Last Chance via WBCQ-6
concluding German hour, only fair on caradio beamed away; piano IS
different than the usual, 1856 Arabic and off for swivel; *1859 back
on in Arabic seems slightly stronger, 1900 ``Huna WBCQ`` and
worldslastchance.com pronounced in English. Still in Arabic at next
check 2153, now S9+20/S6 the 500 kW much *weaker* now than 9350 WWCR
100 kW at S9+50. By 2157.5, 9330 reaches S9+25 in Arabic; 2200 WLC
theme music but cuts off the air by 2201* leaving splash from WWCR.
Rather than testing with WORLD OF RADIO as happened without notice
last week. 2356 recheck it`s back on in Brazilian, but VP S3-S6 here
to the WSW during this almost-south beaming. At 0120 Nov 28 back to
English, S9-S4 despite optimum azimuth of 245, with MUF declining.

It`s not TG target day yet, but the above matches already this info
Nov 26 from Alan Holder, Isle of Wight, UK:

``Hi Glenn, Re your post on Hard Core DX 25-11-19 about WBCQ and
World’s Last Chance. The “menacing” interval signal of World’s Last
Chance radio, as you call it, seemed familiar to me. Finally, I
remembered that it is based on the Christmas song called “Carol of the
Bells”. You can find many recordings of this on the Web. Apparently it
is of Ukrainian origin. I have also heard the WLC version of this
music during some episodes of a U.K. TV programme series called
“Impossible Engineering”. So it is not music which has been written
especially for WLC radio.

I note that WLC have amended the sked on their Web site. Presumably
this is the final version which will be used from November 28:

All on 9330 kHz:

0000-0100 Portuguese Brazil 175 deg.
0100-0300 English East USA 245 deg.
0300-0600 English Central USA 270 deg.
0600-0900 English West USA 280 deg.
0900-1000 Portuguese Europe 76 deg.
1000-1100 Spanish Europe 76 deg.
1100-1300 Spanish N.South America 180 deg.
1300-1400 Spanish C. America 220 deg.
1400-1600 English W. Canada 300 deg.
1600-1800 English U.K. 57 deg.
1800-1900 German Germany 54 deg.
1900-2200 Arabic Morocco 70 deg.
2200-2300 OFF AIR (Maintenance?)
2300-2400 Portuguese Brazil 175 deg.

Regards, Alan Holder``

9330, Nov 28 at 1507, S9/+10 of gospel huxter in English, so WLC must
be officially underway. Allan Weiner indicated to Artie Bigley that
the only non-WLC programming on 9330 would be `Worldwide`, UT Saturday
at 0100-0200 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [and non]. 9955, Wed Nov 27 at 2202, wall-of-noise Cuban
jamming vs WRMI with Radio For Peace International in French; still
same at 2237. Obviously Cuba is opposed to international peace (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5890, Thu Nov 28 at 0710, S9+30 of dead air from WWCR
transmitter which is not supposed to be on at this hour; same level as
5935 with DGS modulation. Haven`t noted such for a while; holiday
special? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1203, Nov 27 at 2217 UT, IBOC noise bothering WRTO Chicago
1200 (not WOAI), and another peak about 1177. This time the 1190
source is WOWO: sports talk by W&M ``after 5 o`clock``, mention Fort
Wayne; dominant 1190 signal but plenty of QRM. WOWO is believed to be
the only 1190 running IBOC. Don`t usually hear that or 1190 itself and
wonder if their pattern be out of whack: U2 50/9.8 kW, i.e. ND day
which is OK since Nov sunset is 2230 UT (Dec: 2215 UT). NRC AM Log
shows format as NWS/TLK, not SPT per se (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1500, Nov 27 at 2215 UT, plenty skywave already, area code
317 mentioned, ``deliverance`` and gospel huxtering vs sports talk
presumably KSTP. 317 is Indianapolis, and the 1500 there is a fit, REL
format on the other WRN group, WBRI, a 5 kW direxional daytimer. Best
time to hear it as Nov official sunset is not until 2230* (Dec: 2215*)
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Atlantic JBA MW carrier search, Nov 28 at
0045-0052: 531, 576[see ALGERIA], 585, 612, 684, 693, 711, 738,
774(2), 855, 882, 909, 936, 954, 999, 1044, 1053, 1089, 1107(2),
1125(2), 1179(2), 1215, 1575 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 1520+, Nov 27 at 2226 UT, I`m straining to hear a
tell-tale het from 1521 upon 1520 KOKC, since Doha, Sa`udi Arabia 2000
kW is about to sign off at 2231* as noted by Bruce Conti, NH. It used
to be obvious when it ran all-night. I do detect a JBA carrier, but
sounds less than 1 kHz, so maybe KRHW Sikeston MO which has varied
before; and still there at 2233 UT (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 3344.924, Nov 27 at 0807, carrier fading S7-S5. Such a
frequency immediately brings to mind the mostly inactive RRI Ternate,
Indonesia, altho a bit early for it to propagate? Maybe not: sunset
0920 UT. A few hours earlier Wolfgang Bueschel independently measured
exactly the same frequency! and had the same idea about Ternate ---
but certainly not at noontime there, and apparently he was using USA
remotes like adjoining logs in that session: ``3344.924 ??? Strange
signal string, much vague - ? could it be carrier of RRI Ternate-INS ?
- at 0320 UT Nov 27 wb``. Last reported frequency for it was 3344.86
as in DXLD 19-22 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 6016-USB, Nov 28 at 0707, 2-way INTRUDERS, not Spanish
but some tonal language (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 6810, Nov 27 at 0758, AM dead air at S9-S7; I also ran
across this sometime earlier but unlogged (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 7969.0-CW, Nov 27 at 0751, CW seems handkeyed, repeating
after long pauses but may not be an identical marker. I do manage to
copy DE MRNQ as ID, altho I am not positive about the last letter.
MRNQ gets no significant google hits, nor at UDXF iog, but frequency
at UDXF leads to old logs mentioning a Russian military outstation
Morse net paired with 6988; but also an Algerian petroleum net. MRNQ
could also be an antique(?) British ship callsign, altho this is not a
marine band. More likely a tactical call (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

Logs
** ALBANIA [non]. Earthquake coverage: Unlike yesterday, 15770 WRMI
relay of R Tirana at 2030 UT Nov 26 is a JBA carrier; NO carrier when
checked via UTwente where it is aimed. 7780 is making it to UTwente
with gospel huxter Biblebot, a more reasonable band to reach Europe
after dark.

Listen ``live`` link here plays about the EQ, and presumably not live
but the earlier English broadcast heard after 2100:
http://rti.rtsh.al/category/english/news/

But it`s mainly historical info about previous quaxe, then music.
Also a few brief stories about this to be read visually.

(Meanwhile no big tremors around here today, but instead wildfires.
KWTV has been covering live from Mooreland, near Woodward, west of
Enid.)

The webcast after IS at 2130 switches to Slavic language, Serbian?
WRTH 2019 does not mention any but English, French, German, Italian,
the ones on SW via WRMI, Kall. Altho mostly music, 2100-2130 was for
English. Slavic goes to music at 2137.

9395, UT Wed Nov 27 at 0230, WRMI cuts from song fill to Radio Tirana
IS which includes an editing overlap, and sign-on with no SW
mentioned. Now it`s S9+10 with fades to S6. News about earthquake to
0236, then about organized crime; 0240 EQ statistics; 0249 songs
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CANADA. 7850-CUSB, Nov 26 at 2322, CHU is gone again from this
frequency altho I had heard it reactivated at 1554 as in previous
report. Meanwhile, Richard Langley, NB found no signal at 2200;
likewise Mike Bott, OH at 2319; and Wolfgang Bueschel, Germany, at 0319
Nov 27 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. 11820, Nov 27 at 0045, nice SE Asian music, gamelan? a few
announcements in Cantonese to 0057* cutoff; was S8 to S9+10. Best
Asian signal on band, 500 kW, 200 degrees from Xi`an. See also
THAILAND [and non] (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 15370, Nov 26 at 2050, RHC in Kriyol! instead of scheduled
Portuguese; and again at 2154 check, Kriyol! instead of Arabic.
Something`s always wrong at RHC.

11880, Nov 26 at 2159, RHC IS and ID in Spanish about to open English
but then dead air past 2201 except for some lite (self?)-pulse
jamming. Something`s always wrong at RHC.

5040, Nov 27 at 0104, RHC suptorted and squealing with spurblobs 3 to
4 kHz on both sides. Language is Kriyol this time when it is supposed
to be. Something`s always wrong at RHC.

Wolfgang Bueschel agrees: ``CUBA 5040 RHC Bauta Spanish TOTALLY
DISTORTED HISSING audio feed signal, 0346, S=9+15dB in C.C. Florida,
7.6 kHz wideband outlet tonight`` [gh deleted kHz after frequency and
UT after time as obvious, redundant clutter to make wb`s post more
readable to the wider WOR/DXLD audience] (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

** JAPAN [non?]. 9890, Nov 26 at 2228, NHK in Japanese inboooming at
S9+20, incredible signal for transmission direct but off the back.
Nevertheless, I suspected a European, African or even American relay,
but TDOA by wb showed it really from Japan.

Now I am comparing it to the other two listed Yamata frequencies on
air at this time:
9560, 300 kW, 290 degrees, antenna 146, Mandarin to Korean at 2230
11910, 300 kW, 290 degrees, antenna 146, Japanese // 9890
9890, 300 kW, 235 degrees, antenna 208, Japanese // 11910
I do confirm that 11910 & 9890 are synchronized as if from same site.

Yet both these are *much* weaker than 9890, S5-S7 JBA on 9560, despite
same band with same propagation; and S7-S9 JBA on 11910, higher band
expected to be weaker.

Somewhat different azimuths away from us and 9890 is on a bigger
curtain presumably with more gain forward, but backward? Enid is 44
degrees from Tokyo, path crossing Aleutians, Spokane/Kalispell, while
directly off the back from 235 degrees would be 55. ITU explains the
antennas this way:

146 AHR(S)2/2/0.5
208 AHR(S)4/2/1.0

``Type 1: Multi band centre/end-fed curtain antenna arrays with
aperiodic screen reflector Designation: AHR(S) m/n/h
m : number of half-wave dipoles in each horizontal row
n : number of rows spaced half a wavelength apart one above the other
h : height above the ground in wavelengths of the bottom row of
dipoles``

So are the azimuth and antenna type enough to explain this huge
disparity in signals? Or maybe, just maybe, Yamata is aiming max lobe
in the wrong, opposite direxion? I await some expert replies (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PERU [and non]. 5980, Nov 26 at 2320, JBA carrier under Cuban
wall-of-noise jamming against nothing, presumed Radio Chaski; from
2353 I`m back listening closely with BFO for the autocutoff and this
time catch it without dozing off: 2355:27.5*. Now I have a baseline if
I can catch it again, whether the timer be slipping as in olden times
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** THAILAND [and non]. 13750, Nov 27 at 0040, JBA carrier is the best
HSK9 can do via Udorn for English to ``North America`` (instead of
getting some sparetime on Grimesland!). What else on band? Huge RHC
S9+20/30 on 13740; Chinese S9/+10 on 13580, which is 500 kW the wrong
way 215 degrees from Beijing site, so E Asian propagation is not that
bad. Also 13770 in Vietnamese, CRI, 500 kW, 190 degrees southward from
Xi`an, S8-S9. Why are these so much better than Radio Thailand
intending for us? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** TURKEY. 5960, Nov 26 at 2319, VOT English to N America is on, but
poor S8-S9. 2346 starts sign-off with full English schedule including
the imaginary 06-07 UT broadcast! IS plays from 2347.5 past 2353, but
is off at 2356 after I`ve checked PERU on 5980 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2009 monitoring:
2200 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW; 9330?
0100 UT Thursday WRMI 7780 to NE

Full WOR schedule including AM, FM, webcasts, satellite, podcasts:
http://www.worldofradio.com/radioskd.html
