KCUP 1230 kHz Toledo, Oregon --- TEST EXTENDED & "BLACK COFFEE, NO SUGAR, NO CREME" TEST MATERIAL  View Printable Version
Friday, January 29 2021

HCDX

HARDCORE GRAVEYARD DX TEST THIS WEEKEND EXTENDED HOURS

It just keeps getting better. Not only has Steve Rubin, owner of KCUP agreed to test on Saturday evening, January 30, 2021 starting at 10PM PST (0600 UTC) until 0600 AM PST (1400 UTC) on Sunday morning, but he’s also agreed to a special kind of test:

The “Black Coffee, No Sugar, No Creme” AKA No Decaf Allowed Test is Here. Eight solid hours of only legal voice IDs, Morse Code, and sweeps, sweeps, sweeps.

The Courtesy Program Committee has long dreamed of doing a test with absolutely no “filler” material. Normally we include jingles, vintage promos, music of various kinds…maybe some holiday themed content as well. This type of stuff is great fun if you’re close to the station, but for those on the fringe of reception every second “wasted” on a singing jingle is a second that may be the difference between a new log and noise.

This weekend, we’ll be serving just straight java, piping hot from KCUP. Code, Code, Code, followed by sweeps, sweeps, sweeps. Only the top five pieces of source material that are proven to best cut through the noise. The only exception will be a voice ID that will run a few times each hour just to keep things legal.

This is your best chance to put this station into your log book. Don’t miss it.

VERIFICATIONS

Reception reports will be handled by the Courtesy Program Committee (CPC) at the request of KCUP. Reception reports should be e-mailed to:

les@highnoonfilm.com <mailto:les@highnoonfilm.com>

We strongly prefer that you include MP3 sound file recordings of the best 2-3 minutes of your reception. If you cannot record the DX, then detailed written reports can also be accepted. If your report is confirmed, you will receive a custom designed QSL card as a PDF file attachment. It is suitable for printing.

We will no longer accept reports via USPS mail.

If you are interested in claiming the record, please include the following additional information:

A.) NRC Member? YES or NO.
B.) Exact longitude and latitude of your receiving location. If you use a remote SDR, you must use the lat/long of that receiver.
C.) Claimed distance in miles to the transmitter location of KCUP.

If anyone exceeds a reception of 542 miles, we’ll report that information to Tim Hall.

SPECIAL THANKS

Our special thanks to Steve Rubin, owner of KCUP for this rare DX test from Oregon and the opportunity for some lucky DXer to break Tim Hall’s record.

73,

A Bad Habit Related To DXing & My Equipment...  View Printable Version
Wednesday, January 27 2021

HCDX
I have developed a bad habit.. lol. I use Zoom H1 handheld digital recorder
when DXing to record all my catches. It's compact and fits in my pants
pocket, which keeps it warm and keeps the batteries from running down
quickly in the extreme cold. It's also SIMPLE and does exactly what I need
without alot of bells and whistles.
It' also runs on 1.. ONE AA battery, unlike other recorders that take 2 or
3 AA's or AAA's.
Well, what I've been doing is.. whenever one pops up on Ebay in good shape
and fully functional with no parts missing... I buy it if I can get a good
deal on it. I have 5 of them right now.
It's like transmitter or console parts that become unobtanium.. Zoom
doesn't make this anymore that I can tell. So I'm buying as many as I can
get my hands on. Some retailers might still have new units, but I can't
afford to buy them new for $ 99 if I want to build up a big supply of them
If you have one in good to excellent shape and will let it go cheap or
relatively inexpensively.. I'll buy it! I don't need any accessories with
it, none. I'll take just the recorder!

When The Northern Lights/Aurora Activity Takes Place  View Printable Version
Wednesday, January 27 2021

HCDX
... it ruins AM radio reception in Alaska. Northern Lights/Aurora activity
hit on Sunday night. I mean, absolutely RUINS. Even the 50kw Fairbanks and
Anchorage stations are nearly useless. And the big guns from SE Asia.
.250kw to 1.5 megawatts? Useless. While this happens up here, people in the
lower 48 are hearing Spain on AM as far inland as Chicago and Detroit!

I still go outside every morning because I never know what the atmosphere
could bring me. DXing up here is very different then the lower 48 and even
Canada. Anything you think you know about Dxing can somewhat be thrown out
the window, the laws of physics and signals don't always seem to apply up
here.

I've heard everything from a 1KW AM in Norway and a 10kw AM in the Czech
Republic to 400KW blasters from Hungary and the UK!

I know it'll get better real soon, but it's frustrating waiting while
everyone else is enjoying DX.. but what i hear up here on my very modest
set up exceeds most of what others hear in the lower 48.

It seems it's started to recover slightly, a tiny bit already. As one of my
ex bosses said: Other people: Look at the awesome lights
Paul: damn lights, go away
