Glenn Hauser logs +Feb 1-2. 2020  View Printable Version

Logs
** ARGENTINA [non]. 5800, UT Sun Feb 2 at 0120, RAE AAM is on now via
WRMI with porteño-accented Spanish item about progress of gender
equality in different countries, led by Iceland; 0142 music rather
than DX program, so evidently not the original ``Friday`` edition we
have been hearing repeated on UT Mondays; apparently this RAE relay is
going out daily altho produced only M-F; altho sometimes missing on UT
Tuesdays (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** BOLIVIA. 5952.4v, Feb 2 at 0041, JBA carrier vs heavy splash from
5950 WRMI music, i.e. signature split frequency of Emisoras Pio Doce,
occasionally on the air (Saturday nights?). About 24 hours earlier I
tuned across and it was not to be detected. Still going at 0132
recheck, no better than before. Walt Salmaniw was also hearing it in
BC tonight, and Ron Howard in CA last week (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CANADA. 2749-USB, Feb 1 at 0732 UT, YL voice marine weather in
English; overlain by CCI at 0733 from human OM voice ID as ``Halifax
Coast Guard Radio``, sharper modulation and more easily readable, then
same voice in French but English accent with ``securité``, i.e.
warning about something until 0735:45* off while the YL is still
going. CCG reference shows VCO Sydney via site Port Caledonia, NS
starting at 0740 on 2749-USB, nothing immediately earlier.

https://www.ccg-gcc.gc.ca/publications/mcts-sctm/ramn-arnm/part2-eng.html

2749-USB, Feb 2 at 0053 UT, YL in English weather, also VCO Sydney NS
via Port Caledonia scheduled from 0040. Same synth voice as on
2598-USB but not // (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CANADA. 2598-USB, Feb 1 at 0738 UT not earlier, but after activity
on 2749 I check sibling frequency, now with something, YL voice in
English citing several events in Newfoundland Standard Time;
visibility less than one mile (sic), gale warning, etc. VCP Placentia
NL via St. Lawrence (not the river/seaway) site starts at 0737.

2598-USB, Feb 2 at 0053 UT, YL in English with forecasts; same station
and site scheduled to start at 0048. Same synth voice on 2749-USB but
not // (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** COLOMBIA. 2940+, Feb 1 at 0730, JBA carrier, presumably Radio
Huella, Cali, 2 x 1470+, which I have not detected in months. Don
Moore visiting Colombia just reported to the MARE Tipsheet:

``Colombia, 2940, Radio Huellas, 0345-0357, Weak & somewhat distorted
signal with ID at 0356. 2 x 1470 harmonic. Brett Saylor has logged
this in Pennsylvania. Has been around for a while as I also heard it
in Colombia in 2018 (Jan 26, Don Moore, near Armenia, Colombia)``
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6010-6045, Feb 2 at 0047, jamming splatter out of 6030
messing up this frequency range. Something`s always wrong at the DCJC
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA [non]. 5040 & 5025, Feb 2 at 0049, both RHC and Rebelde are
absent! Uncovering a JBA carrier on 5040, probably INDIA; and slightly
stronger signal on 5025+, presumably Quillabamba, PERÚ. Power failure
at Bauta site? No chance to check other RHC frequencies, but no break
in the priority jamming just logged around 6030. Something`s always
wrong at RHC/RadioCuba. By 0129, both 5s are back on and so is open
carrier on 4765, then Progreso modulating (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 4103-LSB, UT Sun Feb 2 at 0102, piano jazz music at
S9+5, a pirate now here, bad news for the ``Windy`` W-beacon in the SW
desert on 4102.3, which I cannot detect now nor lately. It`s Ze-ke`s
Attic, DJ frequently with off-the-wall comments, says Ma (Maud?) is
helping pick the music; 0108 something about QSL cards, available? But
sidetracked to comments about no fires at the house. 0109 ``Redwing
Blackbird``; wife`s name is Arlene, a.k.a. Arlie, or Harley, ha2; 0111
plays his pick, Santana; 0119 says there is a thunderstorm there but
stays on air; going to play ``Abilene`` which he has not heard in 25
years; 0122 ``Dominique`` in French; 0126 a tune he knows nothing
about, ``Just My Funny City of Laughter``; 0129 says is being heard in
Mojave Desert, so: 0130 ``California Dreamin```; 0133 ID for listeners
in Calif; 0134 song about dog walking cats(?), sandwiched between
comments about corned beef and cabbage; etc. Many more logs here until
0155*:
https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,62840.0.html

NOTE: my previous log of Ze-ke, on 4117-USB, had the wrong UT date:
was really Jan 31, not 30! (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA.1320-, Feb 1 at 1851 UT, bandscan on caradio finds dead
air here from our nearest daytime dominator, KCLI Clinton; trace of
some other audio, maybe leakage or KWHN Fort Smith AR, second closest.
KCLI has been off-frequency minus for years, causing LAH against
anything else at night. At 1906-1908 UT still dead air when I measure
it on the R-75: 1319.96! And beating against a much weaker signal.
Then I check mwoffsets which is close: KCLI on 1319.9615 as of two
years and one week ago (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** TURKEY. 5960, Feb 1 at 2357, VOT after English is still on with IS
and starting to intersperse German IDs; so prospects are good for an
imminent collision with the weekly The Mighty Farty KBC; Nauen carrier
for that *on just before 2359, mixing with TRT producing a SAH --- but
then, Turkey turns off, just in time! Shux. From 0000 Feb 2, KBC
starts modulating its 125,000 watts of Dave Mason in the clear. BTW, I
noticed one editor censored the word ``Farty`` from a previous report
of mine. But where would KBCB without fart mentions? During Uncle Erix
second hour, anyway (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2019 monitoring: confirmed UT Sunday February
2 at 0423 on WA0RCR, 1860-AM, MO, about 7 minutes into so started
circa 0416; fairly good at KiwiSDR in Peoria IL. Next:

Full schedule including AM, FM, webcasts, satellite, podcasts:
http://www.worldofradio.com/radioskd.html
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 4980, Feb 1 at 0715, JBA music, unID; another possibility
would be 3 x 1660 something, but not // the two closest to here mainly
talking. Later I ask Jeff White if it`s WRMI low-power and he confirms
it is, just testing. No reply when I ask for further basic info about
it (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 5130, UT Sun Feb 2 at 0001, WBCQ playing that novelty tune I
mentioned last week, connected with TimTron, then opening Radio
TimTron WorldWide, to be a generic program but produced Feb 1, 2020,
and to repeat on Sunday [UT Monday] on Area 51; originating from
WXMZ-LP in Skowhegan. The tune led to replies, first from John
Carver:

``Glenn, In reference to your comment about the novelty tune before
AAWWW started. That originated with TimTron and is played when there
is a problem with his internet feed connecting. I don't know how it is
triggered as if his feed isn't connecting he can't send anything. At
any rate it is a snippet of some sort of ethnic music folk song done
by a youngish female that Tim has slowed down to sound as it does.
Could be Hungarian or Gypsy or something. At any rate it's quite
familiar to listeners of Area 51.

Several years ago I heard it played one time at normal speed on Area
51 and immediately recognized it. I wrote to Larry Will and asked
about it. He replied with the story behind it and gave me a Wiki link
to the story behind the tune and if I remember correctly it contained
a link to the actual tune at normal speed. When I was finally able to
boot the computer today I did a search through the headers of every
message Larry has sent me since sometime in 2010 and couldn't find it
based upon the subjects listed in the headers. If you're really
curious I suppose you could ask Larry Will if he remembers. John``

Voilà, Larry Will also replies, on the WOR iog February 1:

[WOR] Radio Timtron Worldwide's interval signal --- John Carver and
Glenn recently mentioned the foreign language interval signal loop
that Timtron WA1HLR uses before he starts broadcasts of his show,
Radio Timtron Worldwide, and occasional guest spots on Allan and
Angela Weiner Worldwide. This interval signal sometimes makes it on
the air on WBCQ because of the timing issues associated with the
internet delivery of audio to WBCQ master control.

The music loop is a pitch-altered version of the audio from the 2006
Internet meme "Leekspin", also known as "Loituma Girl":

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loituma_Girl

...which itself is based on a selection from a traditional Finnish
folk song "Ievan Polkka" performed by the Finnish group Loituma on
their 1995 album "Things of Beauty":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yh9i0PAjck

Timtron has been using this interval signal since at least 2009. At
the 2009 SWL Winterfest, I recall that Tim used a low power AM
transmitter that ran on 650 AM in the late afternoon, using what he
called his "WSM crapstal." Later in the day he switched crapstals and
used 7415 AM. When the frequency switch was happening, he used this
interval signal as audio input. I also remember that this transmitter
was capable of a very wide AM bandwidth and the fidelity was
outstanding; Tim brought along a Hallicrafters S-38 to the Winterfest
that was modified to receive the full bandwidth signal. We have some
recordings of this event, directly from the audio output from the
Hallicrafters receiver, in the WBCQ archives:

https://archive.org/details/timtron2009
Larry Will`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 9350, Sat Feb 1 at 2111, `Encore` via WWCR pre-announces
`William Tell Overture` and then plays its famous finale; but just
before that we were already hearing previous movements of WTO, which
has just been back-announced as prelude to act 3 of Wagner`s Parsifal
--- but that was interrupted a few minutes earlier for WTO. Must be an
editing problem. This week`s playlist not yet up, to tell exactly what
was intended altho does not show timings. Always very strong signal,
but marred not only by occasional selective fading distortion, but
also transmitted distortion at modulation peaks causing me to tune
away, sorry. May have been OK on the webcast (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 3215, Feb 2 at 0057, WWRB gospel huxter at S9+30/40 but with
clix, and S-meter shows signal fluxuating with those and modulation
peaks. Something`s wrong (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 5085, UT Sun Feb 2 at 0122, WTWW-2 theater organ music show
has started after a bunch of ham radio news. 0144 outro ``Deep
Purple`` and closing nameless show until 0147 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 7597.4, Feb 2 at 0116, S9+25/30 open carrier; reminds me
of this last log on frequency more than a sesquiyear ago:

``UNIDENTIFIED. 7597.4, June 9 at 0212 and 0542, rapid RTTY clattering
away now from unknown source rather than open carrier (Glenn Hauser,
OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 7696.7-USB, Feb 2 at 0115, 2-way in Spanish conversation
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Glenn Hauser logs January 31-February 1, 2020  View Printable Version
Saturday, February 01 2020

Logs
** CHINA. 6140, Jan 31 at 2355, YL singing ``Swing Low, Sweet
Chariot`` until cut off at 2357*. Typical rude behaviour of CRI: yes,
listed as Cantonese service via Kunming site, but whyever would they
be broadcasting that song/hymn? 6100 also propagating, CRI Portuguese
fill music via Beijing site; not to mention 12190, q.v. (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** CHINA. 12190, Jan 31 at 2347 Chinese, VP with heavy flutter, CODAR
QRM; a *jammed Sound of Hope frequency, presumably with CNR1. I bet
this is on Wolfie`s latest exhaustive monitoring of these:

``Log of Jan 23-26 checked some Asian target outlets on remote SDRs in
Hiroshima, Akitakata, northern Tokyo Japan; as well as at Doha Qatar
and eastern Thailand SDR rxs.

12189.955 TWN SOH Chinese S=4-5 weak and tiny at 0626 UT on Jan 26
12190even CHN CNR1 jamming signal against TWN SOH services at 0748``

But I was hearing only one signal. I deleted ``UT`` after the second
time as redundant clutter (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** MADAGASCAR. 5010-, Feb 1 at 0332, JBA carrier on minus side as in
RNM; but I was not hearing any of it before 0200 vs WOR/WRMI, nor
after (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 88.3 WBFM, Feb 1 at 0328 UT, for the first time tonight,
K202BY translator for Enid is back on the air with nominal good signal
and modulation, no spurs, obviously repaired/replaced for new owners,
from Family Radio, to ``Great Plains Christian Radio``, a.k.a. KJIL,
originating with 99.1 full-power in Copeland KS. They have a bunch of
translators and a few non-translators in western KS, but as far east
as Emporia, plus adjacent parts of CO, TX and OK, including a
translator as close to Enid as Fairview but not heard until now in
Enid. Program was `Focus on the Family` ``on KJIL``, then commercial
for Harvest Transport. Now I`ll have to use 88.1 instead for RF feeder
purposes in the car and home, or even further to avoid ACI. As I had
been reporting, K202BY had been out of whack, dead air, or off the air
for many months, depriving us of the wisdom and remarkable prophecy of
Harold Camping (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** THAILAND. 13750, Jan 31 at *2357.6, VP carrier on, as I am parked
here waiting for HSK9`s so-called eastern North American service
direct from Udorn; 0000 Feb 1, JBA modulation. Never better than this
here, or inaudible. No Cuba on 13740 tonight (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 5960, Jan 31 at 2345, VOT English to us gone again (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2019 monitoring: confirmed first
WRMI broadcast, Friday January 31 at 2300 on 9955 --- I`m listening
via Bogotá KiwiSDR where reception is good with no jamming audible,
but at 2323 check direct, mixing with jamming, more or less readable
depending on fading, but night conditions are closing in and dropping
the MUF.

Never mind my suggestion that others listen now via Colombia; that SDR
only accommodates a few listeners at a time; so if you can access it
via the web, you can also access the WRMI webcast, or podcast via
multiple sources; do that rather than tie up SDR.

Also confirmed UT Saturday February 1 at 0130 on three WRMIs direct:
5010, S9+10 but noisy; 5850, S9+10/20, better but not the big solid
signal it usually is; and 7780, only S9 and noisy. Next:

1300 UT Saturday WRMI 15770
2030vUT Saturday WA0RCR 1860-AM
0400vUT Sunday WA0RCR 1860-AM [nominal 0415]

0100 UT Thursday WRMI 7780

Full schedule including AM, FM, webcasts, satellite, podcasts:
http://www.worldofradio.com/radioskd.html
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 5850, UT Sat Feb 1 at 0200, WRMI starting VORW after WOR,
this time John saying it`s the ``newest`` show of Thursday 15 August
--- so he`s still rerunning during dental healing; three weeks ago it
was the 8 August show (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. (7490.25v), UT Sat Feb 1 before 0100, hardly any signal from
WBCQ nor on 5130, so I bring up webcasts for `AAAWWW`, both main and
Area 51, but despite WTO theme, it`s Pirate Joe substituting this
week, into political ruminations which I might find agreeable, but not
expecting any WBCQ tech or programming info, move on to other
monitoring. John Carver in IN was not getting either SW signal at all
until end of hour on 5130. 7490+ had been audible here but fading down
by 2300 for `Behaviour Night` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 17775, Jan 31 at 1951, VP signal S6-S7 with gospel music,
presumably in Spanish, the SSOB and also the OSOB: KVOH. Nice to know
it still exist, as usually inaudible, especially when checked around
nominal *1500 M-F. We still await an update about if and when their
`new` transmitter was ever put into service (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 8992-USB, Feb 1 at 0003, ``New Deal`` concluding
alfanumeric cryptomessage, pause, ID and repeat. NO RTTY CCI today,
and always has echo/reverb to add to its mystery. Never the same ID
again; or from same site? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 12746-USB, Jan 31 at 2348, 2-way in colloquial informal
Spanish, engine noise, not long before `puta` mentioned; intruders? I
wish some native speakers would monitor all these and give us an idea
what/where they are about (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
