Glenn Hauser logs March 10-11, 2020  View Printable Version
Thursday, March 12 2020

Logs
** ALGERIA. 891, March 11 at 0057, music barely separable from 890
WLS, i.e. Alger network 1. From a few minutes earlier there were JBA
carriers on almost all the available lower 9-kHz channels (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CHINA [and non]. 9455, March 11 at 2012, only Firedragon via
UTwente SDR, while here direct it`s only music from WRMI. Radio Free
Asia was on 9455 first, sucking in ChiCom jamming, before WRMI
expanded to 24 hours; 16-22 in Chinese via various sites, this hour
via Saipan; also Tibetan at 02-03 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** COLOMBIA [non]. 6010, 24 hours later March 10-11, no signal from
Alcaraván Radio, at several chex. So last night may have been a trial
run, but certainly successful. What`s next? Here`s what I did find:

6010, March 10 at 2333, JBA carrier, wobbly or Brasil? Nothing on
5910.

6010 & 5910, March 11 at 0046, no signals on Colombia KiwiSDR. 6010 at
0049 on Brasil SDR, trace of something; Inconfidência? Should have
been more than that if on.

6010, March 11 at 0240, almost 24 hours since HJDH first reported,
nothing; 0337 a JBA carrier from algo.

Note, per Aoki/NDXC, 6010 has BBC Persian at 0230-0430, first hour via
Bulgaria, second via Uzbekistan; and don`t you imagine Bahrain really
active in English after 0300.

6010, another check via Colombia SDR, March 11 at 2254: nothing (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 15730, March 10 at 2330, RHC opening Brazuguese, S9+20 and
distorted. Aoki shows this was supposed to be in French except on
Sundays Esperanto; but Portuguese at 0030, so also shifted one hour
earlier no doubt to the consternation of their huge audience in
Brasil. Something`s always wrong at RHC.

Meanwhile at 2330 March 11, there is still no signal on 11880 when
English might have appeared, nor on 9720. Something`s always wrong at
RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA [and non]. 6000, March 11 at 0105, JBA ME music --- Turkey in
Turkish at 01-03 --- and no RHC, but it cuts on at *0106 and gradually
starts barely modulating // better 6145. So is 0100 the nominal start
for evening English block, not before? Something`s always wrong at RHC
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6060, March 11 at 0542, this is the best of The Cuban Five,
all of which are still on in English (but 6060 sometimes Spanish),
S9+20/30 and fine modulation. 6100 is S9+30, less modulation but
sufficient; much louder than 6145 yet reading S9+10/20; and 5040 is
S9+20/30 loud enough, but always with that annoying squeal.
Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 11880, March 11 at 2115, still no signal from this RHC, but
recheck 2204 now it`s on but in Spanish, still at 2248. Original sked
before DST was 2100 French, 2130 Portuguese, 2200 English. So far this
week, 11880 had not be heard at all, nor any replacement
time/frequency for English. Something`s always wrong at RHC.

11880, March 11 at 2300, when English might have appeared, still in
Spanish with full frequency announcement --- of course NOT including
the very one I am tuned to! What do they know? She says from now 2300
on: 13740, 11760, 11850, 9535; now going off/(or out of Spanish):
15370, 9640, 5040. Starting at 2400 UTC [sic]: 11670, 11700, 11950,
9640, 6000. I`m suspecting the announcement has not been DST updated.

In fact, some of those are already on! 11670 JBM < 11700 < 11760 >
11850 < 11880, by relative audibility. And VG 11950 has just opted
away for Mesa Redonda TV soundtrack, presumably // 6000. At 2311,
weaker 9535 & 9640 are both on in Spanish, but 13740 is NOT on -- most
of the time it`s AWOL, sporadically active. What do they know?
Something`s always wrong at RHC :::: (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ITALY [non]. 7295, Tue March 10 at *1857 via UTwente SDR, CRI via
EAST TURKISTAN cuts on causing CCI to IRRS which is still here; CRI in
disposable end-of-hour language-lesson filler for Chinese to English.
1900 IRRS jumps immediately to 7290, but a few seconds after European
Gospel Radio has already started on 7295.

7295, March 11 at 1900, same thing happens after a SAH of 3.2 Hz until
jump to 7290 slightly after FSN already started, this time a few
minutes, not just headlines, then into UN programming (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR) See also USA [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO monitoring

** KUWAIT. 17550, March 11 at 2010, at UTwente SDR, no signal from R.
Kuwait, first hour of Arabic to C&W North America, allegedly running
all year but propagating this far only in summer. Can anyone, anywhere
hear it between 20-24 UT = middle of night in Kuwait? (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** MEXICO. 6185.683v, March 10 at 2335 open carrier, no modulation
audible from Radio Educación.

6185.7 approx., March 11 at 0545, S8-S9 of dead air from XEPPM, or
JBM? Nominal s/off remains 0600 until their DST from April 5 when it
will be 0500v*, not that it make any difference unless repaired (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ROMANIA. 5910, March 11 at 0059 classical piano music, RRI ID
opening Romanian and // 7340, weaker and vs VOA/OCB DRM on upper edge
from 7345. At 0101, RRI English news also underway on 6130 // 7325, so
all four transmitters are back in service, at the moment (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 5960, March 10 at 2334, no signal from VOT English, but a
JBA carrier offset minus, no doubt the usual EAST TURKISTAN (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR) See also CUBA about 6000

** U S A. 263 kHz, March 11 at 0552 UT, ND beacon CVM, which is 25
watts from CiVic Memorial, Alton, Illinois (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 15740, March 11 at 1915, VOA Grimesland already on S9+20/10
of warmup carrier. What a waste: they could be modulating it with
something useful like news in English or jazz. Prior to jump to 15730
at 1930 for rest of French hour, which has already been on 15730 via
Botswana; recheck at 2018, 15730 S9+20 with rap in English. During
French service. VOA`s programming priorities are terribly warped
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2024 monitoring: WOR is not intended to be
partially excerpted, but it`s just too tempting as filler for some
stations: ``Hi Glenn, Just to let you know that the first 7-8 minutes
of WOR 2024 was heard Wed 11 March starting at 1950 UT on 7290 kHz via
IRRS Shortwave. Abrupt cut-off at 1958 with IRRS sign-off
announcement. Best wishes, Alan Roe, Teddington, UK``. They`ve done it
before during the 19-20 hour on different days, unpredictably.

Confirmed Wednesday March 11 from 2100:26 on WBCQ 7490.197v, i.e. 6
seconds later and one real hour earlier than before, S6-S7 about equal
to band noise level, and this more-and-more daytime signal will only
be useful at closer optimum skip distances.

But there`s always simulcast Wed 2100 on WRMI JBA 7780: not any more!
Without notice, jazz music playing instead, and a variety of other
oldie genres, Slavic rock, something the DJ slowed down so it sounded
better to him. Turns out to be TIAMS, announced as first additional
broadcast at this hour. I had to listen via Rockport ME KiwiSDR to
find out; VP via UTwente (and also an hour earlier, 15770 not making
it there either during R. Prague and Tirana relays which I could hear
poorly despite not beamed across North America). Next and last 2024:
0100 UT Thursday WRMI 7780 to NE

Full schedule including AM, FM, webcasts, satellite, podcasts:
http://www.worldofradio.com/radioskd.html
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 9385, March 11 at 1920, surprised to find WEWN here, English
discussions of nuns in Africa from Birmingham. Supposed to be on day
frequency 15610 after 1900, but nothing there. 9385 supposed to be
night channel, 00-09 UT only. Certainly much better here than 15610
which is normally JBA except with HF sporadic E enhancement at only 1
megameter distance. But is this a mistake, experiment or permanent
change? Own sked still claims 15610:

Glenn Hauser logs March 9-10, 2020  View Printable Version
Tuesday, March 10 2020

Logs
** COLOMBIA. 6010.0, March 10 at 0308-0312+, S9 to S9+10 in Spanish
and it is religious ``la palabra de dios``, like La Voz de tu
Conciencia used to be. Also getting it on Colombia KiwiSDR. I keep
listening until 0400 UT definite ID as Alcaraván Radio --- that`s the
sibling station to LV de tu Conciencia, nominally on 5910 but it was
not unusual for them to swap programming. Presumably Alcaraván has
kept active on MW 1530. But does LVC have a MW frequency?

So at least one of the HJDHs has been reactivated. Long-winded sermon
continued until 0341 switch to another speaker with Bible reading,
0346 hymn in Mexican style, 0349 announcements, more tunes including
tropical rhythms; 0354 ``continúe con nosotros`` but no ID. 0358 song
about carnaval. 0400 mentions México norteña and Colombia, finally
definite ID in passing ``Alcaraván Radio`` [never vice versa], more
tropical music, occasional chex such as 0420, 0442 music. They do play
a lot of nice music, but ruin it with interruptions for predication.

I`m mostly listening via the two KiwiSDRs in Colombia; the Bogotá one
is less noisy; still music past 0500. Two Alcaraván Radio IDs at 0520.
Then I check 5910 which until 0500 is blocked here by CRI via Cuba.
There, the signal is much weaker, and still a carrier, presumably Cuba
overrun. At 0616 when I quit, nothing on 5910 but 6010 still audible
direct very poor with music. Probably runs all-night. Manuel Méndez,
Spain was hearing 6010 as late as 0720, direct? Via a FL remote,
Wolfgang Bueschel says it`s on exactly 6010.000 at 0636. The old
transmitter was off-frequency.

Tnx to Mike Newland, Morgantown KY, G5RV and Icom IC-7300, who first
reported this to the WOR iog as unID at 0251 --- per short-wave.info
would be either LVC or Mexico, Radio Mil --- incredibly, that
long-gone station is still on the list --- doesn`t anyone keep it up
to date??? It was helpful however to retain LV de tu Conciencia, but
should have been flagged as inactive for a few years --- until now.

There had been reports that visiting American gospel huxter engineers
might be refurbishing these outlets. A few days ago, Bob Wilkner in FL
had something in Spanish on 5910 before 0100 but which we could not
confirm the next night. After 0100, Romania may or may not be active
on 5910, and after 0300 it`s China via Cuba until end of B-19.

WRTH 2020 lists 5910 & 6010 as DC stations --- as if they were in
Bogotá, solely because that`s the postal address of QSL manager Rafael
Rodríguez R.! They are really in remote Puerto Lleras, Meta.

[non] Brasil is also active on 6010, altho I heard none of it in
Colombia but did not try SDRs in Brasil; so beware and be sure of
which language you are hearing. On the radioescutas group March 10:

``Bom dia amigos. Rádio Inconfidência sintonizada (6.010 Mhz) aqui em
Marília(Sp) neste momento ((8h10) da manhã [0510 UT], programa "Em boa
companhia". Ivan Evangelista Jr`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 11880, March 9 after 2200 and 2302, no signal from RHC on the
second day of its needless transmission jumbling due to the imposition
of DST which ought to be irrelevant. Until March 8 had been at 22-23,
and ``normal`` A-season shift was *later* to 23-24 UT on 11880 or 9720
--- and nothing there either. I also scan the entire 15, 13, 11, 9, 7
and 6 MHz bands and do not find RHC English anywhere on old or new
frequencies during either hour. Maybe got lost in shuffle or
coincidental transmitter downage? Keep checking.

Something`s always wrong at RHC. If RHC management were not such a
total mess, Arnie could have broadcast the exact new times and
frequencies on DXers Unlimited March 8 or preferably earlier. But he
never deals with such significant mundane matters. WRTH used to list
him as the frequency manager, but lately only as ``advisor consultant
to the director general``.

My further RHC chex: English on tropical 5040 has indeed shifted an
hour *earlier* from 00-01 UT to 23-24 UT March 9, confirmed beginning
at 2301 but no //s anywhere.

After 2200, Spanish is on 11950, 6000, 11850, 15370 at least; at 2244,
11700 in Portuguese; at 2305, 15730 in distorted Kriyol. Something`s
always wrong at RHC.

Late night, March 10 at 0618, 6060 is S9+30 of dead air; 6000 & 6100
are off; 6145 at 0620 in undermodulated English. Something`s always
wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 13635 & 13765 approx., March 10 at 1407, RHC FM/AM spurblobs
out of RHC 13700 distorting `Sonido Cubano` music now during its
earlier hour; just a trace on 2 x 65 kHz second-orders 13570 & 13830.
13740 is still on with bigsig of dead air. Something`s always wrong at
RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 15700, March 10 at 1410, CRI English relay is just barely
modulated. Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** ITALY [non]. 7295, March 10 at 1818, IRRS with `War Room Pandemic`
episode 39, very strong via UTwente, but considerable undercurrent QRM
from Iran`s IS until it cuts off at 1822* --- for VIRI is already on
7295 in German at 1720-1820, 500 kW at 313 degrees! Now IRRS ex-7290
is colliding with that in order to evade China on 7285. At 1823, WRP
mentions being on SW NEXUS IRRS to various targets but no time or
frequency details (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2024 monitoring: on Monday March 9,
Ron Norton sent an IRRS notice that they would be on 7295 instead of
7290 at 18-20 UT, to avoid CRI QRM on 7285 for the Coronavirus program
at 1800.

I quickly check UTwente and find nothing on 7285, 7290 or 7295 at
1848, but suddenly at *1851, 7295 comes on with music fill; and 7285
is also there with CRI. Maybe receiver had been out of order. BUT CRI
is scheduled on 7295 at 1900-2100 in English from East Turkistan. This
had been ACI to IRRS after 1900, and now will be CCI!!! Including
WORLD OF RADIO about to start at 1901!

At 1857 the 7285 CRI signal cuts off and now we have a full collision
of CRI and IRRS on 7295. To avoid QRM, the second hour at 19-20 should
shift to 7285. I, gh, posted preceding at 1859. At 1902:

Contrary to new sked from IRRS, has switched back to 7290 at 1900, WOR
good on LSB avoiding ACI from 7295.

Then at 1910, Alfredo Cotroneo of IRRS tells me: ``Glenn, You will be
on 7290, as usual from 19-20 UTC. We will assess 7295 from 18-19 and
decide whether to stay on 7295during that period, since 7290 18-19 UTC
suffered from interference from 7285 (CRI) in some parts of the EU``.

WOR 2024 also confirmed UT Tue March 10 at 0100 on WRMI 7780, good via
UTwente and also reported: ``WRMI, Okeechobee, FL, 7780, Mar 10, 0100,
EE with GH’s “World of Radio No. 2024”, followed by "Wavescan", 45344
(JRC NRD-535D; antenna 45m longwire with 9:1 Unun) (Robert
Butterfield, Columbia, MD, USA)``. Next:

2100 UT Wednesday WRMI 7780 to NE
2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW
0100 UT Thursday WRMI 7780 to NE

** U S A. 990, My log of KWAM Memphis struck a nerve of Greg Hardison:
``Glenn: -- "KWAM, The Voice" -- This thing is moving under its new
ownership by extremist Todd Starnes. Fox News-Talk radio had the
wisdom last year to fire Starnes, after he sat back on his show in
silence, while esteemed guest "Pastor" Robert Jeffress asserted, "all
Democrats worship Moloch", a medieval demon-deity who allegedly
advocated child-sacrifice.

Perhaps Starnes will offer Jeffress his own daily show, to further
propagate that kind of "patriotic" bilge, thus countering all them
damn libtards in the media! Already trumpeting the NRA, no doubt we'll
hear endless loads of this sort of crap on KWAM under Starnes'
far-far-right guidance. Such a fine use for the "public" airwaves.
Fine, fine people! -- GREG HARDISON`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
