Glenn Hauser logs September 26-27, 2020  View Printable Version
Sunday, September 27 2020

Logs
** BRAZIL. 6180, Sept 27 at 0032, R. Nacional ID after some Brazo-rap;
S9+30 peaks but distorted. // 11780 is even more distorted and weaker
at S6-S9. Double loss, and neither in crystal-clear DRM, ha2. Far more
than 5 kW as listed in WRTH. Near on-frequency now, but Ivo had found
it on 6173.5v:

``BRASIL Radio Nacional da Amazonia on very odd frequency 6173.5v
September 25
from 1400 on 6173.5vBRA 250 kW / 344 deg to BRA Portuguese and
drifting down.
Very distorted audio and without carrier via SDR Brasilia in Brasil -
Parallel
at same time 11780.0 BRA 250 kW / 360 deg to BRA Portuguese, good
signal/audio`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CANADA. Re: ``371-MCW, Sept 18 at 0619, JBA NDB dash and GW i.e.:
``371 GW CAN QC KUUJJUARAPIK 2000 55 17 5 -77 45 5`` - dxinfocentre.
A new one on me; wow, what a name! I wonder if the French Canadians
find it any more daunting than the English?`` and my stab at
pronouncing the place in WOR 2053:

Glenn, try 'koo jew wack" for something close. 73 Joe ``kay ber lynn``
Caberlin, Ont. (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CANADA. 2749-USB, Sept 27 at 0040 UT, marine weather by synthyl in
English, JBA. DXinfocenter.com shows starting at 0040 is VCO, 500
watts from Sydney NS; nothing audible on 2598-USB (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** CUBA. 5080, Sept 27 at 0018, distorted spurblob out of 5040 RHC
transmitter, this time abutting 5085 WTWW, and not a defect of the
latter as I first thought; since 5080 was also heard last time when
5085 was off. No program audio to compare, but tell-tale F# tone above
middle C especially when tuned in FM mode; and also at other 40-kHz
intervals from 5040, but far weaker than 5080: 5120, the rest JBA:
5160, 5200, 4960, 4920; surely 5000 too but blocked by WWV.
Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR0

** CUBA. 11670, Sept 27 at 0034, RHC S9 but extremely suptorted.
11760 is somewhat distorted but not suppressed in baseball talk vs
Japan. 11800 weak S6-S7 suptorted; plus/minus 10 spurs JBA carriers.
Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NETHERLANDS [non]. 5960, UT Sun Sept 27 at 0028, check for weekly
Mighty KBC broadcast to us via GERMANY beyond: terrible, only a JBA
het of two very weak signals. K=3 and not recovered from G1 storm:

``Solar-terrestrial indices for 26 September follow.
Solar flux 73 and estimated planetary A-index 26.
The estimated planetary K-index at 0000 UTC on 27 September was 3.
Space weather for the past 24 hours has been minor.
Geomagnetic storms reaching the G1 level occurred.`` --- WWV

Of course it`s the CCI that KBC and MBR have chosen to live with, the
always-off-frequency-minus PBS Xinjiang, Urumqi, EAST TURKISTAN, land
of brainwashing Uyghurs. 0043 recheck, now they add up to S3-S5 with
trace of rock music from one of them. UTwente checked at 0107: same
LAH where both signals are stronger but about equal adding up to S9,
unusable there and here. AMSynch locks onto 5959.93075 for Wulumuchi,
which means about 69 Hz apart (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2053 monitoring: confirmed Saturday
Sept 26: ``Yes, at 1300 UT on 15770 kHz. Signal started out strong but
got noisy after some minutes and stayed that way part way into
Shortwave Radiogram and then returned to the initial good level.
Short-lived propagation anomaly? -- Richard Langley``

Missed checking Sat 2300 on WRMI 7780; did anyone hear it?

Confirmed UT Sunday Sept 27 at 0330 on WA0RCR, 1860-AM, Wentzville MO,
S9+20 direct to here; about 11 minutes into so started circa 0319.
Next:

Thanks this week for financial support from Gerald T Pollard,
Raleigh NC, for a generous quarterly seasonal check on a US
bank to Glenn Hauser, P O Box 1684, Enid OK 73702

Contributions may alternatively be sent via PayPal to
woradio at yahoo.com - not necessarily US funds as PP will convert.
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 9395, UT Sun Sept 27 at 0005, WRMI in French but very
strange heavy accent; subject seems to be Afrique. Soon 0006 break for
YL ID in English, ``This is Radio for Peace International``, and right
back into French (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 5800, Sept 27 at 0025, SMTV via WRMI, yet again with
double-audio feed! This time about equal audio levels and about 12
seconds apart. M&W are alternating as they start an alfabetical
listing of animal rights status in countries: Australia, Austria,
Bahamas, Bahrain... That should take a while, but unlistenable. How
does this happen? Is it at WRMI plugging two separate webfeeds into
one transmitter? Or is it upline, SMTV somehow sending it out that
way? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 5085, UT Sun Sept 27 at 0020, theater organ show is starting
on WTWW-2, and Bob Heil never names it at the start; S9+30/50 huge
signal but undermodulated, tsk2. Says two guest thorganists will be
playing this week. Wrapping up around 0050 he does call it `Theater
Organ Under the Arch`, no longer In the Ozarx (Glenn Hauser, OK,WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 7707-USB, Sept 27 at 0011, weak 2-way in Spanish.
7403.5-USB, Sept 27 at 0013, more weak 2-way in Spanish (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

Logs
** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98-CUSB, Sat Sept 26 at 1526, LRA36 is underway
with chat mostly by two YLs, S6-S8 at Brasil SDR, mentioning LRA-4 in
Santa Fe - I thought they said, but that`s in Salta on 690. In WRTH
you have to hunt thru the entire MW frequency list since the LRAs are
mixed in with the non-governmentals. Fortunately this one is in
lowband. Anyhow, altho Antarctica occasionally mentioned, it`s all
about Argentina instead. Abruptly interrupted by local neighborhood
power failure at 1542 until 1707. By 1735 they are still gabbing, 1803
a song. 1902 the Brazilians are busy, a trace of music at Buenos Aires
and Santiago. Latest info about this broadcast per Manuel Mendez was
15-20 in Spanish, preceded and followed by a semihour in German, no
English (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** MALI. 5995, Sept 26 at 0619, no signal from RTM at a time it is
normally heard; could be due to K index of 5 as WWV reported:

``Solar-terrestrial indices for 25 September follow.
Solar flux 73 and estimated planetary A-index 20.
The estimated planetary K-index at 0600 UTC on 26 September was 5.
Space weather for the past 24 hours has been minor.
Geomagnetic storms reaching the G1 level occurred.``

6005, BBC Ascension, however is still audible weakly as usual (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. Re: Oversight of the United States Agency for Global Media
and U.S. International Broadcasting Efforts

Glenn: Here is a link to the hearing:

We asked for it - O, o, it`s 3 hours and 9 minutes. Now even the
HOROTUS is using YouTube. Cue in 4:40 when Chairman Engel explains
what is going on, next 5 minutes, how Pack weaseled out of his
commitment to testify ... (Glenn) viz.:

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2053 monitoring: confirmed UT
Saturday Sept 26 at 0130 on WRMI 7780 only, S9/+15 at Maine SDR, noisy
S8-S9 at UTwente. Follows 0129.5 ID by Ian McFarland, and then Bob
Zanotti tries to too, but is chopped off after only his name. I think
this happens every week to this broadcast, programmed as such into
automation; not my doing! 0140 check here, 7780 is S9+10 but
undermodulated.

ZZZ, I miss checking the nexts, Sat 1130 on WRMI 9955, 1300 on 15770;

(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 5072.0 & 5098.0 approx., Sept 26 at 0147, the very weak spur
carrier parasites to 5085 WTWW-2 are back after having been inaudible
the last time I checked, different transmitter? While 5085 is now
S9+30/40. Still on and there at 0623 when I measure them exactly:
5071.990 and 5098.013 which imply the fundamental be at 5085.0015 or
so but not measured directly. The spurs used to be close to 12.9 kHz
plus and minus rather than 13.0 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 4840, Sept 26 at 0627, WWCR-3 not in dead air for a change,
as it had been the last few nights after 0600; but unID gospel huxter
other than TOMBS who is still on 3215 & 5890. Last few days WWCR`s pdf
program guide has refused to load below WWCR-1. Now I get the xls
version which shows at 0600 on Saturday it`s supposed to be `Worldwide
Country Radio`. Despite this note on the homepage: ``ALL WWCR streams
and transmitters are back on schedule! We appreciate our patient and
loyal listeners.`` Really? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 17775-, Sat Sept 26 at 1500, JJBBA carrier from KVOH when
`Wavescan` is supposed to be getting its first airing of the week
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. Big tropo opening east of here across Arkansas per maps tho
as usual we are on the edge. Enough to knock out some OKC DTV signals
by DX QRM, and show a few Bad signals on open channels but none
decoding, Sept 26 circa 1515 UT. Local power failure at 1542 so I
switch to portable FM on the DX-398. Tulsans are in solid.

99.1 at 1619, ad for Honda of Russellville, i.e.. Arkansas, and more
ads for Fort Smith, ``KMAG 99.1, number one for New Country``, i.e.
Fort Smith, still atop Mount MAGazine? --- hey that would be a great
place to exile Drumpf. 600 meters HAAT which isn`t that much but more
than most in these lowlands.

102.1, Sept 26 at 1623, ``102-1, The Bull, #1 FM New Country,``
Wichita. Really, KZSN, 100/100 kW from Hutchinson KS. Right adjacent,
101.9 KTST OKC, ``The Twister`` also brands itself ``#1 New Country``.
Must be a thing.

90.1, Sept 26 at 1627 UT, both KUCO OK and KHCC KS are overcome by
``Ministry 8 days of hope`` --- that matches the AFR schedule, so KBNV
Fayetteville AR, 7.1/16.0 H/V kW.

92.1, Sept 26 at 1629, also earlier, stupid sports talk, which fits
for another Fayetteville AR, KQSM-FM, 7.6/7.6 kW. Not bad overcoming
the Okies such as KTBT Broken Arrow in the way, not the source of some
C&W CCI (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Atlantic JBA MW carrier search, Sept 26 at 0628:
621, 684, 711, 747, 837, 936, 1188. 1188 is interesting, normally with
nothing. Per WRTH nothing but superpowers in Hungary and Iran; and
Down Under, no more than 2 kW from Australia. No TP carrier from 846,
however. Otherwise correlate with lower latitude NW Africa and Spain
only, with K index of 5 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 12302-USB, Sept 26 at 1503 yet another colloquial
Spanish 2-way, with ``engine noise``. These contacts always know each
other and may use nicknames, but never any proper IDs; informal
arrangements? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Logs
** CHINA. CNR1 jammer search, Sept 25 at 1445-1447: none higher than
11460 & 11170 JBA carriers, the latter with flutter; and 9155, S2-S3
trace of Chinese (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** COLOMBIA? 4940, Sept 26 at 0100 quick check via Bonaire TWR SDR,
still no signal of anonymous mystery missionary station, now gone for
a week (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 349-MCW kHz, Sept 25 at 0629 UT, ND beacon GW; I`m tuned to
348-USB yet there is still QRM from nearby 350 RG in OKC. No dash, so
not Canadian like the GW I recently logged on 371; and there is
another USonian GW on 227. 349 is in Greenwood - Teoc, Mississippi, 25
watts.

353-MCW kHz, Sept 25 at 0630, mixture of ND beacons IN and LI; I have
to listen a while until they are not overlapping as periods are
slightly different. Classaxe.com shows 6.03 seconds for ``Raize`` IN,
and 6.2 seconds for ``Lasky`` LI. IN is 100 watts from International
Falls, Minnesota of renown as often the coldest place in the
Conterminous - after all it`s right next to Fort Frances, Canada; and
LI is 400 watts from Little Rock, Arkansas.

Strangely enough among the I.F. attraxions there is no significant
waterfall, but there is lake flowing into a river thanks to a dam
enabling some hydro power for paper mills (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 13565-CW, Sept 25 at 1448, HIFER beacon with IDs only, K6FRC
JBA; another notable occasion when its asserted 1.8 milliwatts from
Patterson, California make it, as at no other daypart (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** U S A. Michael Pack, USAGM refuses supboena to testify; PBS
Newshour reports

Today Sept 24 was the day when Trump`s man heading the USAGM, Michael
Pack, was scheduled to testify before congress, but he ignored the
subpoena! Will he be held in contempt? Charlie Harlich received a
notice from CSPAN about the hearing this morning, but it did not
appear at the time mentioned, nor can we find it anywhere on their
extremely flexible schedule. Perhaps it will become available in their
archive?

Meanwhile, PBS Newshour aired a 7:38 segment about this during the
third quarter of the show today; likewise I can`t find it yet at the
PBS website, but surely it will show. Searching on USAGM, or VOA, or
Pack, or Jamie Fry, one of the interviewees, ex-RFE/RL president,
should find it. This deals with the scandals in general, such as
refusing to renew visas, as two VOA Indonesian reporters are seen
being deported. Anyhow I have recorded it for my archive. Glenn

Later: here it is, audiovideo and full transcript:

CEO of Voice of America’s parent agency defies subpoena despite
bipartisan concerns
Sep 24, 2020 6:30 PM EDT

Michael Pack, CEO of the U.S. Agency for Global Media, ignored a
congressional subpoena over concerns he has politicized and mismanaged
media outlets that helped the U.S. win the Cold War. One of those
outlets is Voice of America. Nick Schifrin reports and talks to Jamie
Fly, formerly the president of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, who
was fired by Pack. He is now at the German Marshall Fund...

** U S A. (7490), Sept 26 at 0000-0100, WBCQ webcast of `AAAWWW`, no
calls but A&A conversing heatedly mostly about politix; they axually
believe we must vote for Trump in order to ``save the Republic`` while
Trump is really destroying it and must be thrown out. They are back in
