Glenn Hauser logs March 31-April 1, 2021  View Printable Version

Logs
** BOLIVIA. 3310, April 1 at 0040, S7-S9 carrier but can`t make out
much mod, also with QRM from the 3308-USB MARS net. Since I logged R.
Mosoj Chaski direct last night, I proceed to S American SDRs to hear
it better? tonight: JBA carrier at Bonaire; at 0125 it`s JBA at
Vilhena, Brasil, better at Brasilia #2, and slightly better2 at
Pardinho tho further away. All are storm-noisy. Mostly YL talking in
Quechua, then some music mixed in by 0152. 0159 maybe a Spanish ID; at
least I copy ``3,310 kHz`` which may be bilingual. Then there`s that
200+ Hz tone! again from 0200.5 but off* before 0207. Next time: I`ll
listen to the live stream but which probably lax the postlude (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** MEXICO [and non]. 700 kHz, April 1 at 0501 UT, WLW goes off for
maintenance, tnx to tip from MARE. It made a false stop at 0500, came
back on to include ID but nothing said about going off nor for how
long. This uncovers two weak Spanish signals at almost the same SW/NE
DF, inseparable. Main one has to be XEGD, Hidalgo del Parral,
Chihuahua: one music, one talk then both music, making SAH of
152/minute = 2.53 Hz. Mwoffsets is no help, no Mexican entries on
700.

At 0516, ``La Poderosa / 700 AM y 90.3 FM`` or vice versa at 0528,
which nails it as XEGD, per IRCA Mexican Log, but music is
predominantly romántica, not GRU/AC. At 0520, clear Poderosa MST TC as
``10:19``. Of course, its power is nothing to crow/brand about except
as a Big Lie, 5/1 kW.

The only further Mexicans per IRCA Log are in Jalisco and Michoacán,
but considerably CCW from HdP bearing. With these nulled, I hear
nothing from the few other USA/Canadians at night on 700, in AB. AK,
CA, OR, TX, UT, WA, which are low-powered and/or too far and/or aiming
away from here.

At 0555, WLW still off and something Spanish mentions ``101``, likely
an FM frequency but no known matches to 700 stations. At 0600 choral
Mexican NA, and suspect XEGD or something goes off, as the weak mix
after that is different. IRCA Log shows 0500* for it.

The two Texans, DFW and Houston to the SSE were not showing earlier
with their unfavorable patterns; by 0630 there is gospel music in
English roughly NNW/SSE but not the format of either TX. That could be
CJLI Calgary, 50/20 kW, or even KGRV Oregon, 23/0.47 kW. Has KDAZ
Albuquerque moved from 730 to 700 yet? I QRT at 0640*, causing me to
sleep far too late past 1400 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 9830, March 31 at 2200, no signal from VOT English; and no
RTTY either; tsk2. Something`s always erroneous at Emirler (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 7275, April 1 at 0343, ME music at S9/+10. This is the
resumed A-21 frequency for VOT English to N America at 0300, INTRUDING
into our ham band. // 6165 eastward would be blocked by Cuba. Was
there no place for TRT above 7300? Note that 7275 is weaker even than
VOA via Vatican thataway on 7260 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [non]. 7260, April 1 at 0341, S9+10/20 strong but lo-fi talk,
mentions Somalia --- as it is VOA Somali via VATICAN, violating
Separation of Church and State, as sked 0330-0400 only. At this time
7260 also bears Vanuatu, East Turkistan, Mongolia per Aoki/NDXC.
American hams cannot be too happy about this intrusion by their own
VOA, ignoring the fact that SMG is notorious for sending bigsigs the
wrong way (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2079 monitoring: Richard Lemke, Alberta,
rounds up his confirmations, including Wed 1030 on 5850:

Program heard: World of Radio #2079, Date heard in UT: March 26, 29,
31 UT 2021. Monitoring, checking signal using SINPO code,

5850 kHz, QSB fading, 5850 kHz, 0132, 0145, 0150 (55444), (55443),
0159, 5850 kHz, March 26 UTC 2021 [Fri]

7730 kHz, static, QSB fading, QRN, 7730 kHz, 0059 (45333), (45433),
QRN, 0059, 7730 kHz, March 29 UT 2021 [Mon]

5800 kHz, 0248, 0250 (55433), 0257, 5800 kHz, March 29 UT [Mon]

5850 kHz, 1045 (554), 1044 half way mark, 1045, 5850 kHz, March 31 UT
2021 [Wed]

9955 kHz, S5 signal, QSB fading, 2214, words “This is, 9955 kHz,
finally heard ID at 2229, “2079” 2229, 9955 kHz, March 31 UTC 2021
[Wed] (Lemke, Richard -AB, Canada)``

Confirmed here Wednesday March 31 at 2100 on WRMI 7780, JBA theme
direct; and starting ~20 seconds later on WBCQ 7490-, slightly better
direct, VP.

Also confirmed Wed Mar 31 at 2200 on WRMI 9955, S9+25/30 over Cuban
pulse jamming, which is now running this early.

Also confirmed UT Thursday April 1 at 0130 on WRMI 5010, S5-S7 into
Brasil SDRs but stormy.

Next WOR 2080 should be ready by early UT Fri April 2 for first
broadcasts at 0130 on WRMI 5850 & 7780 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. 6159.93, April 1 at 0050, WBCQ Area 61 Old Time
Radio with `Amos `n` Andy` recreation by Ed Tilton, S9+10 but with ACI
splash from S9+30 6165 RHC English, which unexpectedly resumed here
ex-9700, from about 0000, messing up the second hour of A61 and
anything later, even when tuned in LSB. Now I am not so eager to get
WOR back on at 0300 UT Mondays: bad choice between CubaRM or daytime
absorption. RHC could easily have resumed 6145 instead of 6165.

And at least before 0100, nothing on 6155, 6150 or 6145, where WBCQ
could shift if not RHC. But QSY is not so easy at WBCQ, by regulatory
approval, or by grinding new crystals. A further look at HFCC for
openings: nothing on 6155 until VOA at 0330, discounting wooden
Bulgaria until 0300. 6150 totally open our evenings. 6145 only maybe
China, and alternate for The Mighty KBC UT Sundays only, surely not to
be used before next winter, if ever. Aoki/NDXC sked has nothing
significant to add (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** VENEZUELA. 6205, April 1 at 0013 tune-in via Bonaire SDR,
immediately hear ROCV Morse code ID, and spoken ID in Spanish with
numbers, phone? followed by --- Polish! Why not? S7-S8; had been AWOL
last night (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Glenn Hauser logs March 31, 2021  View Printable Version
Wednesday, March 31 2021

Logs
** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98-RCUSB, March 31 at 1534 tune-in via Brasília
SDR, another Wednesday, another LRA36, only S1-S3 with music, 1537
announcement, stops at 1538, off? No, just a pause, more rap music
which we hardly need from Base Esperanza, stops at 1551* and still off
by 1555 without despedida or any talk. It seems they always chop
themselves off at widely variable times: an hour later last week. Or
do they just run until transmitter craps out by itself? (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** BOLIVIA. 3310, March 31 at 0155, Andean music, only broadcast
signal on 90m besides WWCR and CHU. It`s Radio Mosoj Chaski. First I
make sure the audio match neither KGWA nor KCRC, my two locals which
for many years ganged up to block 3310 (2 x 960 + 1390), both of which
are talkers, but with occasional musical bridges. That mixing product
fortuitously cleared up several years ago AFAIK, but I`m always
apprehensive about it.

This rates S7-S9, my best chance at Mosoj in a long time. No doubt I
could hear it better via a remote, but I`ve long wanted to log this
direct. Maybe I`ll check that another night to compare behaviour. The
music at tune-in is vocal; at 0158 there is an announcement I cannot
recognize as Spanish, so likely Quechua; 0159 another song; 0200
announcement with music mix.

At 0201 all that stops, replaced by a big hum/whine. Compared on my
keyboard, pitch is about G# or Ab below Cmiddle, i.e. 208 Hz or so. I
figure it`s signed off and quit feeding the STL, while the SW
transmitter remains on relaying the noise filling the STL
transmission. This continues without a break until transmitter off
finally at 0210.5*

Among others, Manuel Méndez in Spain often reports RMCh, as does
Robert Wilkner in Florida, predominantly in the hour or two before
0200. One recent log by Bob ended at 0211 but not as a sign-off, nor
any mention of the tone. MM just heard it last night: ``BOLIVIA, 3310,
Radio Mosoj Chaski, Cotapachi, 0118-0131, 30-03, Bolivian songs,
Quechua, comments. 25322.``

Our obs contradict WRTH 2021 with sked as 09-13 & 21-01; 10 kW from
Cochabamba, not Cotapachi/Cotapaxi, with website mosochaski.org which
is wrong, the j is required: https://www.mosojchaski.org/en/ According
to that, live broadcasts are at 5:00-8:30 am and 5:30-9:30 pm, which
at UT -4 yearound means 0900-1230 & 2130-0130. Must vary.

``Mosoj Chaski was founded in 1999 as a short-wave Christian radio
station to reach the Quechua people who are scattered across Bolivia.
Mosoj Chaski, which in Quechua means ¨The New Messenger¨, was started
by missionaries from SIM, New Tribes Mission and Pioneers
International, along with like-minded Bolivian nationals.``

SIM originally meant Sudan Interior Mission, the founders of ELWA
Liberia. ``Sudan`` once had a connotation well into west Africa beyond
present-day Sudan. Mali was previously colonized as French Sudan, then
part of French West Africa, AOF (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CHINA. 11745, March 31 at 1830, Firedragon jammer S7-S9 with deep
fading, against nothing, but RFA in Chinese via Kuwait is scheduled
this hour only. No sign of Sa`udi AFRS `Al-Azm` either, but even
without the jammer this would be a mess in target. Still past 1846.
Meanwhile I check the 11.0 and 13.0 MHz areas but still no sign of any
ChiCom jammers, CNR1 or FD (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA [and non]. 6000, March 31 at 0058, RHC English has just popped
on, now // 6165 which has already been running an hour. A minute or
two earlier checking 6000, only had some very weak Qur`aning, as Iran
in Tajik is scheduled 0050-0220. Via TWR Bonaire SDR, which is not
responsible for Islamic or Commic content it forward (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** IRAN. 9835, March 31 at *1920:45, VIRI English chops on with
program in progress, discussion of Jeffery Epstein and sex
trafficking. Then I check // 9855 and find it much stronger S8 into
UTwente SDR. 1923 ID as ``Voice of Islamic Republic of Iran
broadcasting``, schedule as ``1920-2020 UT on 6040, 11880`` --- which
are the defunct B-20 channels: what do they know? Music fill depriving
us of standard opening in other languages, anthem and Qur`an! 1929 a
different ID, ``IRIB English Radio, coming up, the news``.

1930 three upward chimes, theme, and news headlines starting with
Hezbollah in Lebanon calling on Sa`udi Arabia to stop the war against
Yemen. 1934 changes to commentary about the Iran Nuclear Deal and how
Biden is not getting anywhere --- complete with music stinger SFX.

May I point out that the very name of the country and thus the station
is a Big Lie? Islamic and Republic are mutually exclusive, i.e. of
god, and of the people --- can`t be both, and we know who`s really in
charge, minority people who say they represent a god (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** KURDISTAN [non]. 11530 & 11540, March 31 at 1456, poor signals on
both, which implies as nothing else listed, one is Dengê Welat via
France, and the other is the Turkish jammer, named in Aoki as ``TRT
Radio Recep Erdoğan``, but certainly not what it call itself; i.e.
missing its target, which shifts back and forth between 11530 & 11540,
also when via Pridnestrovye.

BTW the curve over the g means it`s pronounced as h: ``The correct
pronunciation of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Turkish can be phonetically
transcribed as Reh-jep Tah-yeep Err-doh-han, as heard in the audio
file. The most important element in pronouncing Erdoğan correctly is
to remember that letter "ğ" must be pronounced as "h"``:
https://www.pronounceitright.com/pronunciation/recep-tayyip-erdogan-4782
No, it`s like w, per this; o my, which are we to believe?:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJEJItHXmJU
Reason enough for his term to be -inated (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN [and non]. 17855, March 31 at 1825 & 1913 chex, still zero
signal from REE to N America, direct or via Virginia, UTwente SDRs.
Here, 15520 and 11940 are JBA; further east 11940 is in silly ballgame
anyway. Only signal here on 16m is 17530 VOA Grimesland, JBA in very
poor propagation. Also checked ex-9690, not there either (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [non]. 9410, March 31 at 1500, last few notes of Yankee
Doodle Dandy, i.e. VOA signing off but S8-S9 carrier stays on a while.
It`s Korean via Tinang, PHILIPPINES scheduled 1400-1500 only, further
aimed USward.

Remember when 9410 was an exclusive BBCWS/GOS English OOB frequency,
only from domestic site? Still also used by BBC but only relays, in
various languages, and not continuously, e.g. before this VOA hour in
Bengali via Sri Lanka; after it, English via Oman. Other sites per
Aoki employed sometime during the 24 are UAE, Vatican, São Tomé,
Singapore, Ascension; in: Pashto, Dari, Arabic, Hausa. Taiwan and
China also squeeze in, seemingly well-coördinated time segments (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2079 monitoring, next:
2100 UT Wednesday WRMI 7780 to NE
2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW
2200 UT Wednesday WRMI 9955 [jammed?] to SSE
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S

UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Atlantic JBA MW carrier survey, March 31 from
0141: not every single 9-kHz carrier this time, but of note: no 531
Algeria or 621 Canary which used to be staples, yet 612 Morocco? and
891-Algeria. We expect them all to be 24 hours, but maybe not. Also
noted are 1215, two on 1305. And one on 1431 which is surely the 600
kW VOA Djibouti on the east coast of Africa, as otherwise there are
only a few very low power in Europe, max 5 kW in Italy. Around 0530,
531 and 621 can now be detected (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Glenn Hauser logs March 30-31, 2021  View Printable Version
Wednesday, March 31 2021

Logs
** COSTA RICA [non]. Berny Solano2 of `Mundo Sorprendente` asks me to
spread the word that because of pandemic restrixions, he has not yet
been able to send out all the calendars and QSLs; BTW, my packet
arrived by registered mail, so I had to stand in line behind a
maskless Enidiot coughing --- she says, ``just allergy``. Berny:

** CUBA. 6060, March 30 at 0644, RHC English not only with humbuzz but
is also pulsing, worsening it more. // 6100 is OK, 6165 is
undermodulated, 6000 is off; and at 0649, 5040 is still on but in
Spanish. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK,WOR)

** CUBA [and non]. 11880, March 30 at 2309, RHC is NOT in English but
Kriyol! English hour at 23-24 had been on 11880 & 5040 since Yanqui
DST start March 14. And now 5040 is in Spanish, not English either.

15730, March 30 at 2309, I first found Kriyol on this reactivated, S9
but distorted and modulation crackling, then found // on L&C 11880.
Talking about Haïti, Duvalier. RHC scheduling is SNAFU! What else?

13650, March 30 at 2306, the only Cuban active on this band now, no
13680 or 13740; still pointless CRI Portuguese relay filled with
Chinese music, and considerable CCI from R. Japan direct backward in
Thai. On 19m, RHC trace on 15230, no 15370, but 15730 as above.

9650, 11670, 11760, March 30 at 2314, RHC Spanish mainstream, but
11850 and parasites 11840 & 11860 are off. Separate Spanish, `Mesa
Redonda` TV soundtrack this hour, on VG 11950 but with crosstalk, //
JBM 6000 at 2313.

6000 is off by 0007 March 31, rather than English which has already
started on 6165. Multiple somethings wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** IRAN. 9835 & 9855, March 30 at 1930, VIRI with news in American
English, COVID stats, etc. New A-21 frequencies for 1920-2020 English,
both good into UTwente, but 9855 has an additional rustling sound. So
English remains on SW. Meanwhile, still uncertainty about some other
languages on SW: French missing, but Spanish resumed? Not the *2350
broadcast, nothing into Bonaire on 9620 or 7325 at 0002 check March 31
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 17855, March 30 at 2147, I remember to check REE`s alleged N
American frequency, which yesterday lasted only one hour+,
*1755-1900*. Not a trace of it now direct, nor via VA SDR after 2200.
15520 to ME is JBA, which means the MUF is lowered, so 17855 could be
on but not propagating at all. That leaves 11940 to S America which
would have been second-best here, but now is first-best, fair and
sufficient. At 2204 via VA SDR, if it`s Tuesday, Ladino music, long
`Emisión Sefarad` announcement and more nice music after 2216.

Earlier, Richard Langley, agrees on the WOR iog: ``Today (30 March)
here in NB noted REE only on 15520 kHz and 11940 kHz (weak) at around
2040 UT -- Richard Langley`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SRI LANKA. 11755, March 30 at 1610, S Asian song, S7-S9 and
fluttery on a frequency mostly vacant. It`s AWR Trinco in Urdu, the
only thing ever scheduled, at 1600-1630 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 9830, March 30 at 2203, VOT English to N America, first
checked via UTwente, only a trace under RTTY even over there until
RTTY stops at 2204; into Virginia SDR, it`s S9-S7 without the RTTY.
Recheck direct to here at 2303, 9830 is still on in spurious German,
VP. Still going at 2327 but gone at next check 2333. Something`s
always erroneous at Emirler (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U K [non]. 9615, March 30 at 1612, S7-S8 in Korean; at first seemed
tonal, but ``imnida`` giveaways. 입니다 is a very common word in KK, yet
google translate does not recognize it, tries to make it Indonesian. A
basic search on the Romanized word leads to explanation that it merely
means ``is``. Anyhow, this is BBC via USAGM Tinang, PHILIPPINES at
1530-1830. 21-degree azimuth carries right on into North America as a
bonus (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 227-MCW kHz, March 30 at 0643 UT, ND beacon TNZ, which is 25
watts from Walnut Ridge / Lawrence County, Arkansas, just south of
Pocahontas, in the NE corner. This is a *new* one for me, increasingly
hard to find vs all the oldies I usually skip relogging.

This also reminds me that altho my first log of POH on 428 kHz, the
highest-frequency MW beacon in the Conterminous, was correctly
attributed to IOWA, a later one in December was mistakenly put in
Arkansas! Pocahontas, IA is NW of Fort Dodge (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2079 monitoring, next:
1030 UT Wednesday WRMI 5850 to NW
2100 UT Wednesday WRMI 7780 to NE
2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW
2200 UT Wednesday WRMI 9955 [jammed?] to SSE
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S

Full schedule including AM, FM, webcasts, satellite, podcasts:
http://www.worldofradio.com/radioskd.html

Our non-commercial broadcasts and website depend on voluntary support:
thanks this week to Kelley Sprout, Hughesville PA, for a check to
Glenn Hauser, P O Box 1684, Enid OK 73702

One may also contribute, not necessarily in US funds, via PayPal to
woradio at yahoo.com (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 6159.93, March 30 at 2313, Area 61 on WBCQ with Jean
Shepherd on German cockroaches` rapid breeding. Yes, the `Old Time
Radio` block is now for two hours starting at 2300 UT Mon-Thu, one
hour on Fridays; and always Jean Shepherd first, as in this week`s
lineup, which still says 0000 UT as if before DST shift:
http://zappahead.net/#2021-0329-area61
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 15745-15750-15755, March 30 at 1607, WINB hybrid DRM noise
succeeds reactivated A-season frequency today unlike yesterday; tonal
in the lower half with still unknown content or purpose (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** U S A. Re my remark about prolonged offfrequenciness of WKVQ
1540.200, "...Whatever became of a major FCC monitoring post in GA,
Powder Springs? ..." --- Greg Hardison, now in CA, replies:

``Glenn, you may have been with us, were you not?, when we toured the
Powder Springs facility during the 1978 National Radio Club Convention
in Atlanta. I seem to recall R390s, at least one R388, and other
venerable boat-anchors of that ilk, whilst drooling uncontrollably!
Not long ago I scoured the area via Google SatView, which as I recall
was a mile or so south of Powder Springs Rd., not far from the present
WDWD/590 and WAZX/1550 xmtr sites. I saw plenty of newish development
on what used to be pig farms during my childhood, but no signs of the
FCComplex, which covered several acres back in the day. I applied
unsuccessfully to the FCC at age 18; at that time the Allegan [MI]
facility was used for training purposes, among other usage. I did find
Google-directed e-thread concerning the overall subject here - but
beware, some of the posters seem to have issues with apparent drug
use: https://groups.google.com/g/rec.radio.cb/c/Yd1L5ZxVjqs

That '78 meetup was perhaps the most tour-centric in NRC history.
Besides the FCC, we also saw both studios and transmitter for WSB/750,
and the Shepherds Lane FM/TV "candleabra", shepherded by then-WBIE
owner Jim Wilder, thanks to Karl Jeter. My own contribution was
arranging a quick look at the Turner-satellite uplink for WTCG (later
WTBS), off in what used to be the woods behind Cumberland Mall --
nowadays gone and replaced by rampant development. Ahhh, my twisted
days of Youth!...``

I don`t remember seeing that FCC station; only the one by Grand
Island, Nebraska (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** VATICAN [non]. 11900, March 30 at 2314, 1 kHz tone causes me pause;
2315 hymnic ditty and opening Vietnamese: it`s Vatican Radio via USAGM
Tinang, PHILIPPINES, a semisesquihour violating Separation of Church
and State, S7-S9 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** VENEZUELA. 6205, March 31 at 0005, NO signal from ROCV into Bonaire
SDR; now what? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 383-MCW kHz, March 30 at 0634 UT, JBA ND beacon,
two-letter ID, first letter definitely H, second not positive but
maybe W. None such listed on 383-385 in dxinfocentre.com, so I check
more comprehensive classaxe.com --- on 385 there is 100 watt HV at
Hiva Oa, Marquesas Islands, but I can`t imagine getting that, so far
only reported from AZ, CA and OR. V of course is ...- while W is .--
What else? Nothing closer than that; something miskeying? (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)
