Glenn Hauser logs January 7-8-9, 2021  View Printable Version

Logs
** CANADA. Re my log of 750 CKJH, Melfort, Saskatchewan, Murray Lycan,
VA1CQ, Halifax, replies: ``As a former Saskatchewan resident long ago,
I'll have you know CKJH studios (Beach Radio) are located only 1 km
from Windsor Slough at the Melfort Golf & Country Club. I suppose this
could qualify as a beach area if you squint your eyes`` (Glenn Hauser,
WORLD OF RADIO 2068)

** MALI. 5995, Jan 8 at 0709, S9+10/20 from ORTM in French with
African flutish music, very nice, good modulation too; and by now no
ACI from Cuba or Cuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA [and non]. 960, Jan 7 at 0716 UT check, KGWA Enid again in
dead air with algo underneath. Also Jan 8 at 0654 DA; with nulling,
dominant signal is a non-sports talker; KGWA blasts back on at 0659
for Rush ad and ID, 0700 Faux ``news`` starts. Wish I had time and ear
protexion to monitor for DX during nightly protracted open carriers
KGWA so kindly provides. Note: on WOR 2068 I mis-call the understation
heard before from San Angelo TX as KSKL instead of correct KGKL (Glenn
Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2067 monitoring: confirmed UT
Thursday January 7 at new time of 0130 ex-0100, on WRMI 5010 only,
fair via DomRep KiwiSDR. Expected 7780 instead with music before and
after 0130; at 0155 beepery and no voice announcement before 0159 WRMI
ID; typical behavior of `TIAMS`, now running from 0100.

Our non-commercial broadcasts and website depend on
voluntary support: thanks this week to Robert Zerilli, Hazlet NJ,
for a contribution via PayPal to woradio at yahoo.com and
commenting: ``I`m a long time SWL and appreciate you being
out there``

One may also contribute by MO or check in US$ on a US bank to
Glenn Hauser, P O Box 1684, Enid OK 73702 USA

BUT, first airing UT Friday January 8 at 0130 confirmed on 5850, VG
direct and S9+30/35 via MO SDR, and 7780, S9/+10 via UTwente, not 5010
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. (7490.18v), UT Sat Jan 9 at 0100, WBCQ webcast with `AAAWWW`
--- starts right off with paranoid assertions that ``conservative``
media are being ``purged`` from the web; can WBCQ be next in a ``to-do
list`` by evil forces of Biden supporters, behind which is China to
turn the US into communist servitude? Hal Turner fears he won`t be
able to feed his show to BCQ, needs backup method. Topic A, I really
don`t want to hear any more as they are buying into blaming the Left
for storming the Capitol, etc., etc.

0137 recheck, a break to ``lighten up``?? Gives tonight`s frequencies
as 7490 & 6160; but more of the same in the name of Free Speech. 0153
implies that those who disagree are stupid (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Atlantic JBA MW carrier search, January 8 at
0703-0707 UT: 603, 621, 639, 684*, 729, 747(2), 774(2), 837, 882(2),
891*, 909, 999, 1044, 1107, 1125, 1215 kHz. *=strongest; (2) at least
two carriers beating. Notable for its absence is 846, which used to
appear even earlier after TP sunset at Kiritimati; is it off the air?
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNSOLICITED TESTIMONIALS

From Murray Lycan, VA1CQ: ``Hi Glenn, you're as constant as time
itself. It's been years (decades?) since I've looked you up online and
I'm glad to see you're not only still alive but you're amazingly still
reporting on radio. How comforting! Enjoying your most recent report
now. Since I'm a new retiree, I now have endless time to spend at my
radios`` (WORLD OF RADIO 2068)

Logs
DX/SWL/MEDIA PROGRAMS UPDATE JANUARY 6
http://www.worldofradio.com/dxpgms.html

** CANADA [and non]. 750 kHz, January 6 at 0154 UT, one hardly need to
listen to that outdated AM appendage of WSBB FM Atlanta for runoff
elexion returns, especially since its ``news`` totally lax credibility
because the stations voluntarily air far-right extremist wackadoodles
Limbaugh, Hannity, and Kilmeade --- at least the national ones I
recognize on their website. But, for the record I try it and land
during a commercial, anyway, with quite a SAH from some music station,
sounds like Pink Floyd. [see also USA: 750 WSB]

Nulling WSB while the other station is fading up, soon what I
expected, yet another Canadian AM station which refuses to ``protect``
a USA clear channel --- an invasion!! 0157 ``Beach Radio`` which is
always good for a chuckle, far from a coast, low temp to be minus 11,
Melfort PSAs, i.e. CKJH, U4 25/25 kW, and plug a website about the
northeast --- must be https://northeastnow.com/ which is also in
Melfort and linked from CKJH site which is https://beachradiosk.ca/
0158, ``Saskatchewan`s New Beach Radio``.
Night pattern is supposed to be a slightly skewed circle tangent
toward the north, with a particular notch toward --- Atlanta (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 9700, Jan 6 at 0128, RHC English back up here tonight, VG
S9+20 // undermodulated 6000; takes turns with 6145? 9650 has RHC
Spanish at S9/S7 but undermodulated. Somethings` always wrong at RHC
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 350-MCW kHz, Jan 6 at 0135, ND beacon RG is back on from
Will Rogers World Airport, OKC [how many places have *world*
airports??] after missing about a week since the ice storm; must not
be an essential navaid! Even less essential are 255 SW Stillwater, and
341 EI Enid, which are still2 AWOL (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 960, Wed Jan 6 at 0731 UT check, KGWA Enid is yet again
broadcasting a kilowatt of dead air. I was wondering what show is
getting silenced, but the so-called ``lineup`` at
https://kgwanews.com/lineup
does not account for anything overnight except on Sundays:
``On-Air Schedule Sunday 12:00am - 02:00am The Mike Gallager Show``, =
06-08 UT (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. Re Enid`s phantom TV, Trip Ericson of rabbitears.info
replies UT January 6:

``Good evening, I've updated RabbitEars accordingly. Thanks.

Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if K19IR-D had never operated at
all and simply told the FCC they were doing so. Some of the less
reputable outfits seem to do this. Since it's difficult to prove a
negative, it's hard to crack down on.

Not only is FCC permission not needed to put the TBN programming on a
subchannel of another station, but I don't think the FCC allows what
KTBO is trying to do. They're trying to use a temporary channel share
to call KTBO "on the air" but I don't think that will fly, which is
why the STA hasn't been granted. - Trip`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** PUERTO RICO. 391-MCW kHz, Jan 6 at 0635 UT, NDB DDP which is 1 kW
at San Juan - Dorado. Not much from Canada now except for the usual
outstanding 248 kHz WG WinnipeG, so checking for southerly sigs, and
there it is, altho JBA and usually not audible at all. I was tuned to
389-USB. I would love to hear some beacons from further Latin America,
or, even closer (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 353-MCW kHz, Jan 6 at 0632 UT, ND beacons LI and IN
alternating, Little Rock AR, and International Falls MN, same pitch,
but they are edging closer and closer together as the period of IN is
slightly shorter than LI. By 0633, the I of LI and the I of IN are
almost overlain, as if ``LIN``, and then they are untanglible but will
shortly be apart again. BTW, last time I heard IN, there was no sign
of LI (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 356-MCW kHz, Jan 6 at 0136, NDB ODX, which is 25 watts from
Ord, Nebraska; JBA but not many others audible from USA or Canada now.
Why ODX? Missed a perfect chance to get a call identical to the town;
dxinfocentre.com shows no LW/MW beacon anywhere called ORD --- but
then there`s O`Hare, which should have been OHR (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2067 monitoring: one of the
`imaginary` airings per WRMI skedgrid is Wed 2100 on System F 7780,
but which really has been `This Is A Music Show` for many, many months
so I no longer check for it; but, roger in Germany reports:

``[WOR] 2021-01-06 21.00z WOR [2020-12-31] via 7780 kHz --- ``YH via
twitter: "...Ah... the TIAMS 7780 broadcast was a timeslot-filler that
went on longer than expected. I suppose WOR got the slot from the
start of the year."``

``via discord: Daz @ 22:29 CET @jollyroger TIAMS says: I think that
7780 was a freebie. Jeff mentioned that it would be disappearing
around the time change, but it kept on going...``

Confirmed Wed Jan 6 from 2200:20 on WBCQ 7490.183v, poor direct.

Also confirmed Wed Jan 6 at 2300 on WRMI 9955, VG S9+35/40 via
Pardinho, Brasil, SDR, no jamming audible.

Jeff White confirms that the final WRMI WOR airing is being resumed
immediately:
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 7780 to NE [ex-0100], and also new 5010 to S
As well as the UT Tue 0330 on 5800, altho `Freedom Synergy Radio` may
be back sporadically.

Full schedule including AM, FM, webcasts, satellite, podcasts:
http://www.worldofradio.com/radioskd.html

Our non-commercial broadcasts and website depend on voluntary support:
thanks this week to George McClintock, Nashville TN, who sent a check
in US$ on a US bank to
Glenn Hauser, P O Box 1684, Enid OK 73702 USA

One may also contribute via PayPal, not necessarily in US funds, to:
woradio at yahoo.com (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. Wolfgang Büschel posts to the WOR iog at 2101 UT
Wed Jan 6: ``[WOR] ON ALL NEWSCASTS TV STATIONS EUROPEANWIDE AND CNN
TOO, report from DC / VA -- coup d'état at Washington in development;
MPs are brought to safety``

But what about VOA? Of course not! Checked 11720 Grimesland at 2112,
while PRESIDENT BIDEN was speaking briefly, VOA still with African
music. Still same later in the hour. How about Radio Martí? Of course
not! Regular Spanish discussion about Cuba, no voice-overing in
English about DC riot. But then who in Miami would care about that?

However, `Financial Survival` wrapup seemed to be live about the mob
riots at 2157 on 9980 WWCR // much weaker 7490+ WBCQ just before WOR
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 750 kHz, Jan 6 at 0728 UT, WSB Atlanta is now // CNN, a few
seconds displaced from arriving via cable TV here; as the Georgia
runoff returns drag on. I slightly modify my condemnation of WSB for
far-right extremist talk programming. North Atlanta still has WCNN on
680, but now an ESPN stupid sports talk affiliate; was it once // the
cable TV audio; and why retain those calls now? Owner is Dickey
Broadcasting Co. (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) see also CANADA [and non]

** U S A. 920 kHz, Jan 6 at 0730 UT, ``Bless This House`` instrumental
hymn, turns out to be outro theme for `Family Bible Reading
Fellowship`, and then Family Radio inspecific ID, but surely KYFR
Shenandoah IA. VG dominant signal as usual at night here since it has
a tight lobe thisaway, and only slightly CCW in the daytime, 5/2.5 kW;
much better than e.g. neighbor 930 WKY OKC. Checking because the
latest NRC DX News AM Switch column shows:
``Applications for STAs received: 920 KYFR IA Shenandoah – Applies for
STA, U2 3500/2500, failure of power module`` --- well, that seems not
to have degraded its night signal (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 954 kHz, Jan 6 at 0625, 72 fades per minute = a 1.2 Hz
SAH between two TA signals as I am looking for such beats this time
instead of logging every single 9-kHz carrier. Notable that this is
only 6 kHz from my 960 local KGWA, which is not yet deadairing. WRTH
2020 frequency list page 529 shows few possibilities: Spain Onda Cero
50 kW and TRT-1 Turkey 300 kW; a little late for the latter but maybe
not too late at the year`s latest sunrise date.

MWOffsets however shows more: 3 synchros from Czechia at .0000, .0001
and .0003, while Spain is .9996, and Turkey .997. MWOffsets does not
display powers which are certainly important factors. But what about
Czechia; have those MW already closed down? Not under Czechia itself
in WRTH 2021 page 177, still showing 200/30/20 kW. WRTH 2020 still had
a Czechia entry in the frequency list on 954. At this early hour we
don`t think of TPs, but maybe also possible is 100 kW from JOKR Tokyo
where sunset will be 0743 UT, offset .0000 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 747 kHz, Jan 6 at 0627 UT, 80 fades per minute = a 1.333
Hz SAH between two TA signals. Nothing greater than 25 kW from W
``Europe``, RNE5 Canary Islands, and/or synchro 10 kW from Cádiz,
Iberia. Beyond that are Iran, Sa`udi, Sudan and Nigeria. (Once the
major Netherlands channel, now only very low powers.). Also possible
by now, the 500 kW NHK in Sapporo, where sunset will be 0716; easily
heard before sunrise here. MWOffset shows: Canary .9982; Spain .9999;
Japan .9999; Saudi .0008, Iran .0194. So nothing really fits exactly.
Helpful as it may be, the trouble with mwoffsets is that many of the
readings are years old, like 2017 for Canary, 2014 for Spain (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 1305 kHz, Jan 6 at 0629 UT, double-SAH, meaning at least
3 signals, primary beat counting as about 4 Hz. Nothing significant in
W Europe besides four RNE Radio 5 synchros of 20/20/10/25 kW.
MWOffsets accounts for three of them from 2015, 2018 and 2011y! as at
.9950, .9999, .000. This does imply that the one at minus 5 Hz be
mainly responsible, which is the 25 kW, at Ourense (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

Logs
** ALGERIA [non]. 7375, Jan 5 at 1800, RRI in Romanian is the only
signal audible via UTwente, despite TDA also scheduled via Issoudun,
France. So is TDA really somewhere else for the first hour?

7315, Jan 5 from *1900, TDA opening abruptly via FRANCE, in French,
shortly Arabic. Meanwhile 7375 is still RRI only. The 19-20 UT hour
might be when Spanish and English segments from the International
program might appear during winter as it was 18-19 during summer, but
I don`t have a chance to monitor the whole hour.

At HFCC, if you go to TDA here:
http://www.hfcc.org/data/schedbyfmo.php?seas=B20&fmor=TDA
you get only the imaginary schedules from still under construxion(?)
Bechar and Ourgla sites inside Algeria; while if you go here:
http://www.hfcc.org/data/schedbybrc.php?seas=B20&broadc=TDA
there is a mixture of the imaginary and real(?) transmissions via
Issoudun (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CHINA. 6970, Jan 4 at 2352, Chinese S6-S9 fluttery, certainly not a
pirate but another CNR1 jammer (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6100 & 6145, Jan 5 at 0724, open carrier dead air from both
RHC English channels, S9+10/20 and S9+20/30 respectively; the latter
meaning that 6145 again replaced 9700 all evening. Something`s always
wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 15700, Jan 5 at 1518, S9/+10 of totally dead air instead of
CRI English relay; something`s always wrong at RadioCuba (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA [and non]. 960, Jan 5 at 0657 UT, KGWA Enid again in dead
air 24 hours later; 0659 Rush ad and full ID for 100.9 & 960 --- which
I find on one of my analog AM/FM radios line up at the same slide-rule
dial position, what a coincidence, as I confirm both are in dead air
during most of the first two minutes of Fox slanted ``news`` on the
hour. 0708 local? announcement and more dead air continuously past
0722 and 0746 final check.

960 nulled at 0711, I hear echoey sports talk, likely KGKL San Angelo
TX as IDed last night, and another ESPN affiliate, of which there are
at least 4 on 960; most likely WSBT South Bend IN, U4 5/5 kW (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. ``Enid 32 K19IR Returned to the air under STA for this
channel, 100w/53m.

Oklahoma City 21 KTBO-TV Requests STA 15kw/211m, 35-22-10/97-27-40; to
temporarily share on KUOT-CD pending replacement of tower destroyed by
ice storm.

Tulsa 14 KTUL From 10, 1000kw/578m``
(from Doug Smith`s FCC News column in January WTFDA VHF-UHF Digest)

Hi Doug, Allegedly! I do not now see, nor have I ever seen any signal
from K19IR ``Enid` on RF 32 (or 19). From FCC TV Query there have
apparently been two different sites near Enid, not Tulsa or OKC like
some of the other pretenders.

Tropo is up from KUOT RF 21, OKC, and indeed I see TBN main channel on
21-2, while 1, 3, 4 and 5 appear to continue various 3ABN channels.
21-2 is still PSIP labeled nothing but KUOT like all the others. There
is a transparent TBN bug in upper right.

RF 15 has something on it but no decode, as I guess KTBO is completely
off otherwise from OKC. I am comparing 21-2 to Suddenlink cable 3; no
idea what goes with the other TBN subchannels.

Were there any other FM or TV signals on the destroyed KTBO tower?

Interesting to see that KTUL is giving up on VHF! Despite repacking
making UHF more and more crowded. Have not seen it yet.

Terrible about the Nashville bombing. I hope you were not affected in
any way, but how about your employer? 73, Glenn, Enid [to Doug]

``Educated guess is that K19IR's period back on the air didn't last
long (possibly only an hour or two). It went dark on Jan. 15th, 2020,
citing the need to acquire & install equipment to accommodate the
repack (bumped from ch. 19 by KAUT OKC).

The STA to return on ch. 32 says "The Applicant has a smaller
transmitter, than is required for the CP, and the antenna panels on
hand to build a smaller version of the station effective immediately."
This STA was filed on Nov. 2nd, at which time K19IR had ten weeks to
return to the air or lose its license under the "off over a year" law.
The STA text is "boilerplate" -- Edge Spectrum filed numerous STAs
around the country using identical text.

================================

No, there are no other broadcast signals listed on the KTBO tower.

Interesting that they're still coming up as 21.2 instead of 14.1. I'm
not thinking FCC permission would have been needed to do that -- KUOT
is welcome to change the programming on 21.2 at any time, including to
carry TBN as long as they have TBN's permission to do so. A sharing
agreement would have been necessary either if KUOT wasn't willing to
take responsibility for TBN's compliance with non-technical
regulations, or if TBN didn't expect to get KTBO back on its own
signal within a year (but KTBO went off on Oct. 27th so they've got
plenty of time to get back on.)

================================

[non] No physical effects here from the bombing, it was seven miles
from home & four from work & only affected a limited area.

But while nobody was seriously injured (except the bomber), the
economic injuries are pretty serious. My understanding is 1200 people
are now out of work, and it is quite possible several hospitality
businesses which survived the pandemic won't survive this. Hundreds of
people lived in apartments above the damaged buildings & have lost
their homes -- some will likely not be allowed back in to retrieve
their possessions.

The AT&T outage was pretty problematical though. Took out all AT&T
cellphones in the area, and shut down a number of private data
circuits. It also shut down AT&T Internet service for millions, and
the local stations disappeared from Dish Network (which is NOT the
AT&T-owned service) for a while (I'm sure Dish uses a private AT&T
circuit to get the local stations from Nashville to their uplink
site.)

Many people were confused by the fact AT&T internet was still up for
five hours after the bombing. My understanding is the backup
generators were fueled by natural gas & the gas pipes were damaged --
they had to shut down the generators to make sure they didn't cause a
second, unintentional, explosion`` (Doug Smith to gh)

KTOU-LD, RF 22, OKC also decoded this evening [circa 0445 UT Jan 5]:
22-1 HSN1
22-2 SBN
22-3 HSN2
22-4 KTOU on PSIP but full color bars only, silence
[not The Country Network as in rabbitears.info]
22-5 Shop
22-6 Shop = identical to 22-5

** U S A. (101.1), UT Tue Jan 5 from 0400, KSFR Santa Fe NM webcast
with `The Global Village`, replacement for `Beyond Borders` which has
already moved to Thursdays 1600-1900 UT. B.B. was truly ``world``
music, beyond domestic/western, while the new show mixes in the
latter, so not so interesting. T.G.V. host acts as if it has been on
before, but no such title anywhen on the KSFR sked, which still shows
B.B. at its old time. Perhaps T.G.V. be not local origination:
Publicradiofan.com shows two shows of that name from KMUW and WCBE.
The KMUW Wichita one is/was also on 8 other stations. BTW, filed under
G, not T, tho PRF does list many other shows named ``The ---`` under
T.

Yes, that`s it, the one originating with KMUW Wichita:
https://www.kmuw.org/programs/global-village
I recognize the host name, Chris Heim, which I did not know how to
spell; it`s a 1-hour strip M-F at 7 pm CST [01 UT Tue-Sat], which
explains why I was hearing someone else on KSFR after 05 UT. We used
to be able to hear KMUW 89.1 direct in Enid until a gospel huxter
translator usurped the frequency, bane of the non-commercial band.

On KSFR there was soon a break for a promo by Susan Ohori about the
new time for her B.B. Like Susan, Chris does not want her image to be
seen in the staff profiles, but is referred to as a ``she``:
