Glenn Hauser logs January 11-12, 2021  View Printable Version
Tuesday, January 12 2021

Logs
** CANADA. 266-MCW kHz, Jan 11 at 0651 UT, dash and XD, 32-watt ND
beacon at Edmonton, Alberta. City distance to Enid is 1403 miles, so
43.8 miles per watt (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** FRANCE. 5870-5875-5880, Jan 11 at 2348, surprised to hear DRM noise
here S9, stronger than Romania on 6035-6040-6045, but nothing
scheduled anywhere on 5875. I hasten to a DRM-capable SDR, one in
Rochester NY, and there it is, loud & clear, 100% copy with SNR circa
19 dB, discussion in English about Hungarian composer Kodály Zoltán
[BTW, accents in Hungarian do not denote stress] with voice-overs in
French. By 0000 Jan 12 sounded like they mentioned ``astronomie
afrique`` or haha, more likely gastronomie -, ID in French as R-F-I,
and off*. The visual DRM display did *not* include any ID. RFI is not
scheduled on 5875 this season at any time in any mode. Site not
positive either, but no reason to believe it`s not ISSoudun. No
mention of this in drmna.info or the iogroup. Wonder if it will be
back tomorrow (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** INDIA [and non]. 7380, Jan 12 at 0158, S9+10/20 of S Asian music
and YL sign-off giving e-mail in S Asian language, 0200 dead air until
0202.4*. It`s AIR at 0100-0200 via Bengaluru in Sindhi, for Pakistan.
Via Bonaire SDR I was checking 7375 whether Radio Onda Corta Venezuela
had come back, but only big adjacent splash from this. By 0230, Iran
is opening Arabic on 7380, weaker (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2068 monitoring: confirmed Monday
January 11 from about 1901 UT on IRRS 7290 via Bulgaria. No precise
timings since I am recording off UTwente for later listening. Sign-on
just before 1900 again falsely claims this is in reduced-carrier SSB,
a few FSN headlines, then WOR. Splash from 7295 & 7280 are worse than
usual and IRRS is weaker than usual, making it a chore to listen.
Recheck circa 1925 finds 7290 has faded even more to JBA, so I switch
to SDR in Ireland, where at greater skip distance it`s S9+20 which
would be sufficient but still awful inevitable splash from both sides.
At least I can tell my finale by 1930 is not chopped off; in fact a
brief pause before some music and then IRRS ID. Next:

0330 UT Tuesday WRMI 5800 to SSE
[resumed? last few weeks was pre-empted by Freedom Synergy Radio]
1030 UT Wednesday WRMI 5850 to NW [to be confirmed]
2100 UT Wednesday WRMI 7780 to NE [resumed]
2200 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW
2300 UT Wednesday WRMI 9955 [jammed?] to SSE
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S

Glenn Hauser logs January 10-11, 2021  View Printable Version
Monday, January 11 2021

Logs
** CANADA. 258-MCW kHz, Jan 10 at 0700, ND beacon dash and ZSJ, which
is 1000 watts from Sandy Lake, Ontario. Per
https://dxinfocentre.com/ndb.htm
it`s the only beacon anywhere on 258. See my Oct 14 log for more about
this place.

269-MCW kHz, Jan 10 circa 0710 UT, ND beacon dash and UDE, which is 50
watts from Delta, Manitoba; I was tuned to 268-USB. Yes, a Canadian
not starting with Y- or Z-. There is a Delta Beach on my atlas at the
southern end of Lake Manitoba near the coordinates for this. BTW, did
you know there is a town called Reykjavik further up the western shore
of L. Manitoba? BTW2, Lake Winnipeg is much larger than lake Manitoba,
even tho Manitoba province is much larger than Winnipeg city. UDE last
logged here Oct 15 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 13764 & 13636 approx., Jan 10 at 1451, RHC spurblobs very
weak to JBA out of 13700-AM; but second order 13573 is quite stronger
at S3 with F# tone: ~63-64 kHz intervals. Something`s always wrong at
RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 960, Jan 10 before and after 07 UT, KGWA Enid is not in
dead air unlike every weeknight before. Maybe a Sunday-only thing as
per schedule (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2068 monitoring: confirmed Sunday
January 10 at 2306 the 2300 on Area 51 via WBCQ, 6159.25V, S9/+10 into
Virginia SDR; first tried Rochester NY but skipping over, JBA carrier
and a *second* one -- Brasil past 2300* or Germany past 2200* per
Aoki? Again HRI steps on my last word at 2329, ``disclaimer``.

Also confirmed UT Monday Jan 11 at 0030 on WRMI 7730, VG direct; I
also try an Oahu SDR roughly on 285 beam into its afternoon: S4 poor

Also confirmed UT Monday Jan 11 at 0230 on WRMIs: 7780, S9/+10 direct
but poor, undermodulated; and 5800 VG S9+20 with full modulation,
sounds *much stronger* than 7780.

Jean-Michel Aubier and Richard Langley point out that WRMI has a new
transmission grid. New handy link I have created is
http://www.tinyurl.com/WRMIgrid

The one which had been updating is stuck on outdated tiny: /WRMIfqs

The imaginary 21-22 block of System D blue at 21-22 with no
frequencies has finally been deleted. Still there is 10-11 UT on
System F red 5850 including a WOR airing, needs to be confirmed.

The longtime UT Monday 0430 on 9955 is eliminated due to the Prague
expansion. There is a new 9955 time Saturday at 2230. So all shown:

Fri 0130 on 7780 [also 5850? heard this week. 5850 is not accounted
for on any other System during the 01-02 hour]
Sat 1300 on 15770
Sat 2230 on 9955 new
Sat 2300 on 7780 [confirmed]
Mon 0030 on 7730
Mon 0230 on 5800, 7780
Tue 0330 on 5800
Wed 1030 on 5850 [unconfirmed]
Wed 2100 on 7780
Wed 2300 on 9955
Thu 0130 on 5010

Next WOR airings with WRMI integrated into the rest:

1901vUT Monday IRRS 7290 Bulgaria to WNW, 594-Italy
0330 UT Tuesday WRMI 5800 to SSE [resumed?]
1030 UT Wednesday WRMI 5850 to NW [to be confirmed]
2100 UT Wednesday WRMI 7780 to NE [resumed]
2200 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW
2300 UT Wednesday WRMI 9955 [jammed?] to SSE
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S

Full schedule including AM, FM, webcasts, satellite, podcasts:

Our non-commercial broadcasts and website depend on voluntary support:
thanks this week to Robert Zerilli, Hazlet NJ, for a contribution via

One may also contribute by MO or check in US$ on a US bank to Glenn
Hauser, P O Box 1684, Enid OK 73702 USA (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 5010, Jan 11 at 0230, WRMI is still on, opening R. Praga in
Spanish, now extended until 0300*, S9/+10 vs het from
Madagascar-minus.

4980, Jan 11 at 0231, WRMI with something in English, VP, not //
others, probably SMTV as sked (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** VENEZUELA. 7375, Jan 11 at 0115, no signal yet from ROCV, checked
at Bonaire SDR, but heavy ACI from algo on 7380. There is algo JBA on
6200 unlikely to be ROCV either; maybe Tibet at sunrise 0052 UT.

Manuel Méndez, Lugo, Spain, had reported on Jan 8: ``VENEZUELA, Radio
Onda Corta Venezuela, El Tigre, 6200 and 7375. According with
information in the Whatsapp Group "Banda Corta Venezuela" from the
owner and technical director of R. O. C. V., Gregorio Kina, this
station will be back to the air very soon, probably next Sunday,
alternating 6200 and 7375 kHz. Gregorio is currently adjusting the
antennas of the station.`` ROCV will have to avoid 7375 at 22-24 when
Radio Marti is on it; but Cuban jamming will extend beyond: another
poor frequency choice (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNSOLICITED TESTIMONIAL

``From a long time fan --- Mr. Hauser: I’ve been a SWL fan since that
1970s Popular Mechanics article that laid out the radio spectrum in
primary color graphics and showed in a high level way what kinds of
stations a listener could hear from all over the world. I was happy
to hear that you are still in the game, particularly as your name used
to pop up in all manner of places when I would research shortwave
radio listening.

This is just a quick note to say thanks for your inspiration, from a
now long ago kid from a small town who used to cover his wall with
maps and who dreamed of a world connected by positive flows of
information and learning whereby we could all help each other no
matter where we came from to be the most informed and be our best
selves.

Be safe, and wishing you and yours all the best for a better 2021.
Thanks, Lance Pierce``

Glenn Hauser logs January 9-10, 2021  View Printable Version
Sunday, January 10 2021

Logs
** PHILIPPINES. 9794.97 approx., Jan 9 at 2304, really nice gospel
harmonies by a small choir, led by one singer in unknown language so I
cannot be converted, strong S9-S6 but considerable fading; 2307-2309+
change of key and another hymn. O yeah, it`s FEBC in Mon as logged
recently, way offbeam from westward target (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY [and non]. 5960, Sat Jan 9 around 2315 I noticed VOT English
to us, successfully sending. But at 0028 UT Jan 10, jon collins,
birmingham, uk, notified me: ``the mighty kbc and the voice of turkey
in german mixing on the same freq 5960 kHz from 00:00 utc, kbc under
trt``

I reply and post: ``Indeed, at 0036 at UTwente Turkish music is atop;
0038-0039 at Maine and Missouri SDRs, KBC atop but with heavy SAH and
CCI under. Worse further inland where KBC is not as strong. I told
them so! That this would happen if KBC insisted on using 5960.
Glenn``

John Figliozzi on the WOR iog: ``There are hectares of empty space on
the shortwave bands — even 49 meters. It’s a testament to idiocy that
stations can’t seem to find it and end up on top of each other. Of
course, this has been a week with a fetid oversupply of idiocy,
starting with the excrement in the White House.``

roger in germany replies: ``I think that was not something planned.
Somebody ? fell asleep and forgot to pull the plug. ;-)``

``Yes, but it happens again and again. Tonight still on well past 0100
after TRT switch to Portu/Brazuguese, as on TRT World web and satcast.
Glenn``

More about that: at 0054, TRT is signing off in German with a bunch of
satellite frequencies. Per WRTH 2021, the only SWBCs in GG are hours
at 1230 & 1830 on other frequencies. IS plays but still does not go
off air; 0056 and 0059 VOT IDs in Portuguese! 0100 timesignal and
opening PP. I think they gave the date a 10 de junho, not janeiro, at
2230 or 0330? local time. Then long list of satellite frequencies and
parameters, mostly for Europe but ending with a Galaxy to North
America. This has taken 2.5 minutes before they can get around to the
news(?) which lasts only 4 minutes 0103-0107. OM continuity announcer
speaks with Luso accent, YL with news Brazilian, Then she starts
voicing a feature. By now I have found the proper webcast with same
programming, via WOR Hitlist, ``TRT VOT World``:
https://www.trtdinle.com/radyolar
which is accompanied by some kind of schedule but nothing about
foreign languages. Also searching on Deutsch,
https://www.trtdeutsch.com/
nothing about SW there, but were beta-testing German, on TV. In fact,
there is no SW info at all to be found on the TRT websites.

At 0124 I finally try 5960 direct, and find a heavy SAH and CCI
between KBC and TRT, adding up to S9+10/20. By 0141, KBC is finally in
the clear with TRT closed down when the sleepyrator woke up.
Something`s always erroneous at Emirler (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2068 monitoring: missed checking
Sat Jan 9 at 2030v on WA0RCR, 1860-AM; did anyone hear it?

Confirmed Sat Jan 9 at 2300 on WRMI 7780, WOR theme JBA here; by 2328
at UTwente, S9+10.

Also confirmed UT Sun Jan 10 starting at 0425 UT om WA0RCR, 1860-AM,

Hauser, P O Box 1684, Enid OK 73702 USA (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 5850, UT Sun Jan 10 at 0155, WRMI wrapping up `Encore`
classical music hour, VG as always thisaway and now // JBA 7780
thataway; and not 5010. Too much excitement from Turkey+ et al. this
hour on 5960, so need to catch the Tumbril repeat UT Monday 0300-0400
on 5950 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 6160-, UT Sun Jan 10 at 0200, WBCQ #?, with out-of-context
bits voiced by Allan & Angela, parody starting with ``Biden will never
be president``, mixed with duck-faced trombone rude SFX; to open
`Lumpy Gravy` with cosmikdebris and jane. Says this is live on Jan 9.
0206 skip is getting long beyond Maryland, so shoutout to John Carver
in Indiana, from whom we have not heard in quite a while; 0207
``anxiety montage``. Good signal here while 7490.18v is JBA. Another
show worth more hearance on busy Saturday nights (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** U S A. 5085, Jan 9 at 2259, WTWW-2 already on with hamstuff, as
usual on Saturdays; Jan 10 at 0123 not yet but by 0135, TOUTA is
playing at S9+40/30 but with horrible distortion level, more so oro
more noticeable than during rock music; and it`s not convenient to
switch to $ tereo webcast which lax the distortion; also some hum which
may have been on the original recording (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. Re TP carrier search Jan 9: 1344 UT was the year`s
latest sunrise here of course, not the earliest (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 6948-AM, Jan 10 at 0212, S8-S9 carrier with some lite
beepery but not SSTV; pirate? Nothing in HFU (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 7850-USB, Jan 9 at 2259, 2-way USB weak QRM to CHU
CANADA; maybe in Spanish, and not the first time. No ``standard
frequency`` reservation for this (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 13800, Jan 9 at 2311, JBA carrier, suspected RHC
leapfrog mixing product of 13680 over 13740 another 60 kHz beyond,
which are S9+20 and +30 respectively; but this too weak to match altho
maybe a trace of music when Cubans were talking. But nothing
fundamental is scheduled here now (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Glenn Hauser logs January 9, 2021  View Printable Version
Saturday, January 09 2021

Logs
** BULGARIA. 11600, Jan 9 at 1505, S3-S7 of dead air, presumably TOMBS
as scheduled 15-17 UT; altho SOH and CNR1 jamming also could be here,
but not much coming from thataway. Not unusual for Brother Scare`s
satellite feed linx to fail, leaving SW transmitters, including US
ones, with dead air, no one paying attention or ready to switch to
webfeed backup; who cares? And this is during Sabbathday disservices,
no less, oh my! (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 9700, Jan 9 at 0715, RHC English still on and VG S9+10 with
an American? commenting on Capitol terrorism; also 0722 on 6100 at
S9+20; and at 0726, 5040 open carrier still on at S9+20/30. You never
know whether any of them will be on after 0700 and if so whether for
the full final hour. May depend on whether sloppyrators have dozed
off. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 13575, 13638 approx., Jan 9 at 1457, extremely distorted
spurblobs with F# tone from RHC 13700-AM, not very strong, while on
the plus side, 13763 is S7; at 62-63 kHz intervals, next one up should
be around 13825, but not detectable vs huge 13820 Radio Martí.
Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NIGERIA. 7255-, Jan 9 at 0718, no signal from VON; unknown if on
11770- instead, 25m dead (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 13565-CW, Jan 9 at 1456, K6FRC HIFER beacon is JBA, but
always noteworthy as a 1.8-milliwatt transmitter from Patterson,
California. None others audible in the ISM band (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2068 monitoring: not confirmed Saturday Jan 9
at 1300 on WRMI 15770, zzz. Did anyone hear it? Probably Ken Zichi
will report it eventually from habitual monitoring along with SW
Radiogram. Next:

2030vUT Saturday WA0RCR 1860-AM

Hauser, P O Box 1684, Enid OK 73702 USA (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 5800, UT Sat Jan 9 at 0324 check, WRMI with `Freedom Synergy
Radio` concluding and probably going on to another episode at 0330; an
`open` hour where it seems FSR may appear on no/short notice instead
of whatever else be scheduled; so beware UT Tuesdays vs Wavescan and
WORLD OF RADIO. This one had a New Year message so seems fairly recent
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 4980, Jan 9 at 0728, WRMI reads S9/+10 but muffled audio
undermodulated, and I`m not even sure of language before goes into
music; then unseems // any other WRMI frequency (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** U S A. 7505.00, Sat Jan 9 at 0327, weak gospel huxter in English,
poor S5-S6 barely above S5 noise level. Got to be reactivated WRNO
after long absence: I last logged it Oct 22 & 27, and found it missing
when checked Nov 10 & 18. MARE SWBC summary shows Harold Frodge last
had it on some unknown October date (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Pacific JBA MW carrier search: quite a while since
I have done this as a night-owl sleeping past sunrise here; but Jan 9
I happen to be awake by 1350 UT so I check anyway altho the sun has
just arisen at 1343, which is just past the earliest of the year at
1344. On the hand-held DX-398 with internal antenna only and battery
power, I do hear plenty of carriers as 9-kHz tuning is slightly offset
minus, audiblizing each where they exist: not exactly in the order
tuned: 594, 693, 729, 747, 774, 828, 873, 972, 1044, 1053, 1089, 1134,
1242, 1287, 1566. All checked loop NW from E Asia rather than WSW from
D Under, as apropos for mid-winter/summer.

Likely sources are: 594, 693, 747, 774, 828, 873, NHK Japan
superpowers; 972, 1134, 1566, Korea South; 729 Japan 50 kW, or China &
Vietnam each 200 kW; 1044, China 600 kW; 1053, Japan or China 50 kW;
1089, China 600 kW; 1242, Japan 100 kW; 1287, Japan 50 kW. All
glancing thru the WRTH 2021 frequency listings where the powers are
outstanding.

As 1400 approaches I am still getting 747 & 774 carriers, so I hope to
detect NHK time pips for a tad more certainty, but this is not to be
as nearby 780 KSPI Stillwater starts clanging! music at 1359; for
Pete`s sake! (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
