Glenn Hauser logs February 1-2, 2021  View Printable Version
Tuesday, February 02 2021

Logs
** CUBA [and non]. 6060, Feb 2 after 0200, I start checking for when
RHC may come on; Iran is there with lots of Qur`aning until it goes
off at 0226*, fair signal into Bonaire and a good idea for RHC to hold
off. Not checked again until 0305, this time direct, to find that RHC
has appeared, VG S9+20/30 and managing to modulate in Spanish, instead
of last night`s dead air for almost 4 hours. 0500 recheck, medianoche
timecheck and more Spanish: I guess another hour before English from
0600 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2071 monitoring, via UTwente SDR:
confirmed Monday February 1 on IRRS 7290 via Bulgaria, starting at
1900:50. The splash from both sides is not so bad this week; 7295 East
Turkistan weaker than usual, and 7280 Vietnam much weaker than usual,
so LSB listening is best. Seems to be intact at spotchex, and not
chopped off short at 1929:50. Earlier, open carrier cut on at
*1856:34; modulation cut on at 1859:49 at end of something, IRRS
sign-on by a different accented voice than usual, really an Italian?
With P O Box contact. 1900:20 FSN headlines before WOR start. Next:

1030 UT Wednesday WRMI 5850 to NW
2100 UT Wednesday WRMI 7780 to NE
2200 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW
2300 UT Wednesday WRMI 9955 [jammed?] to SSE
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S

not necessarily in US funds (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** VENEZUELA. 6200+RCUSB, Feb 2 at 0156 via Bonaire SDR, ROCV in SAM
mode displays carrier +2.6 Hz: VP S4-S7 noisy, seems to be citing
phone numbers, tropical music; 0159 TC for 58 minutes past the hour,
6200 kHz. I have raised the question whether this be a pirate, lacking
any YV- callsign implying a government-licensed station.

It is true that when it was newly on 6906-RCUSB, it did claim not to
be a pirate with CONATEL authorization pending; and of course it was
relaying FM & AM real stations in El Tigre; isn`t it about time to be
legalized? See this originally from Oct 15:
http://ea1uro.com/radio/rocv/

independiente pronto”.

Noticia actualizada 15 octubre via CADENA DX:

horas!``

Later on CadenaDX FB, it was suggested that Polaco might want to apply
to WBCQ to help engineer the 500 kW.

BTW we are wondering if WBCQ`s purchase of WHRI is still pending,
stalled? Nothing said about it lately. No twits from Allan since
January 20 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Atlantic JBA MW carrier search, Feb 2 at
0320-0324: 531(2), 549, 558(2), 603, 612, 621(2), 639, 684*, 693,
711(2), 747(2), 774(2), 837(2), 881.5-birdie?, 882, 891, 1044, 1125,
1476. If I had the time and/or the patience, I could compute the (2)
SAHs, ranging from ``slow`` to ``medium``. *684 with some music audio,
strongest of the lot, no doubt RNE Spain.

Nothing usually heard on 1476; and there is nothing much in Europe
since ORF Austria destroyed its 60-kW transmitter; instead likely 100
kW TWR BENIN in Hausa, scheduled to start just now at *0320 M-F per
WRTH, finding the schedule, where else? under South Africa on page
494. 1476 is their second Benin transmitter; the first one on 1566 is
also supposed to start at 0320, in English, unheard now, but reported
more often into North America, presumably less unfavorably directed.
As for tonight, I`m rather surprised to find afterwards that the K
index at 03 was 4, with G1 geomag storming. It`s true the northern
Europeans, i.e. UK frequencies were not so strong, but Iberia, NW
Africa still arriving (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Glenn Hauser logs January 31-February 1, 2021  View Printable Version
Monday, February 01 2021

Logs
** CANADA [and non]. 362-MCW kHz, Feb 1 at 0715 UT, dash and YZS, ND
beacon which is 1000 watts from Coral Harbour, Nunavut --- finally a
log from that territory! C.H. is on Southampton Island [colonial
name?] at the north end of Hudson Bay, 3239 km = 2013 statute miles =
1749 nautical miles from Enid. Wikipedia says:

``Coral Harbour (Inuktitut: Salliq/Salliit, Syllabics:
ᓴᓪᓕᖅ/ᓴᓪᓖᑦ),[6][7][8][9] is a small Inuit community that is located on
Southampton Island, Kivalliq Region, in the Canadian territory of
Nunavut. Its name is derived from the fossilized coral that can be
found around the waters of the community which is situated at the head
of South Bay.`` More about it here:
https://coralharbour.ca/
--- and not to be confused with another Coral Harbour in somewhat less
Arctic Bahamas. This one is mixing with AA, which is in Fargo, North
Dakota on 365 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6060, February 1 at *0315 approx., reactivated RHC is on with
open carrier. Exploring when it may start, I had turned on the extra
ATS-909 with whip antenna only a few minutes earlier to nothing, but
now the frequency quietens with carrier. I let it run, and it turns
out it`s dead air only for hours and hours! 0325, 0415, 0450, 0506,
0522, 0657 ---! Think of all the nutritious meals semi-starved Cubans
could have been served for the cost of all this 250+ kWh wasted juice!
Something`s always wrong at RHC.

At 0657, besides 6060 deadair I check all the others and find English
still emanating on 5040, 6000, 6100, 9700; but at 0708 recheck all
these including 6060 are OFF. The final repeat at 07-08 UT during
Standard Time is certainly iffy. Something`s always wrong at RHC
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. Doug Smith, FL/ON, asks, UT Mon Feb 1 at 0223, ``I haven't
heard Arnie on the radio for some time now. Do we know if he has
retired? There is no one else doing his DX program. D Brown.``

I replied, ``Doug, I think he has been semi? retired for quite a while
and/or in ill health. I haven`t tried to hear him in English or
Spanish lately, but when last checked the programs were still on,
mostly Marta Ríos in Spanish reading his scripts. Did you mean
``some``one else instead of no one? DXers Unlimited totally missing?
Glenn``

Before any reply, I start to check this out in addition to the dead
air on 6060. The weekend edition of DXers Unlimited had been appearing
during the first half of the English hour on Sundays into UT Mondays,
as early as :09 to as late as :23 per DX/SWL/MEDIA PROGRAMS, so with
6000 managing to modulate in English, I monitor starting at 0408 UT
Mon Feb 1: `The Week in Cuba` until 0414; `Mailbag` with ``Ed Newman``
from 0415, soon replying to a listener, ``Arnie Coro has been ill;
he`s home resting and recuperating.`` By 0428, the YL with the
annoying voice is reading a script about Star Wars movies, etc., etc.
0445 finally music starts.

So, no DXUL. Arnie had long been working-from-home anyway, feeding via
snazzy fibre-optic cable, but apparently now he has even been unable
to send in scripts for someone else to read. The mit-week edition
typically appeared about halfway into the English hours on Tuesdays,
into WZ Mittwoch, so check then too. I haven`t looked for `En
Contacto`, his Spanish DX program, but approx. times for that were
Sundays 1440, 2340, UT Mondays 0140. He also did a science show on
Saturdays, `Breakthrough`` --- is that suspended too? Anyhow, despite
certain policy differences, we wish him well (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 13430-trace, 13497, 13565 S9, 13632-3, 13767-8 S9+10, 13835
S9, 13897, 13966-7, 14028-trace, all approx., Feb 1 at 1538 during
`Sonido Cubano` music, spurblobs out of RHC 13700-AM, with signature
F# tone; distorted but readable best in FM, not AM modes the first-
and second-order ones. Strongest ones quite broad, but approx.
intervals of 67.5 kHz. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 15700, Feb 1 at 1545, *no* signal from CRI English relay,
which is usually a bigsig, often with sufficient modulation.
Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** EAST TURKISTAN. This could be appended to my next log of Urumqi or
Kashgar, but why wait? These are the people and culture the ChiCom are
trying to wipe out by brainwashing, genocide:
Uyghur Folk Song Mitiz Meshrep
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Hef5OXHr5I
YT will of course sidebar many more examples (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. John Carver replies January 31: ``Re today's WOR
pirate report. For some unknown reason Sycko Radio is pronounced
Psycho Radio.

As for the report on Zekey's Goat Cheese Radio --- I might be really
reaching on this one, but the most successful and well-known commune
in New Mexico was New Buffalo. When it was formed, they got into an
argument about whether they should raise beef or something else for
meat. One of the early members was a "goat whisperer" and he convinced
them to go with goats. Goats weren't real popular in that area but
they raised goats, sold goat meat, goat milk and --- lots of goat
cheese. As I work through the back emails I will watch for any other
references to Zekey and see if they might be commune-related. John``
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U K [non]. 17545.007, Feb 1 at 1455, HOA talk and bit of music
S9-S4, slightly off-frequency until cut off at 1459.5*. Per Aoki/NDXC,
it`s BBC Somali via UAE at 1430-1500; also at 1100-1130 via
Madagascar, plus Saturdays only UAE starting at 1130 filling in the
gap - for silly ballgames? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 382-MCW kHz, Feb 1 at 0715 UT, ND beacon SP, which is 25
watts from Springfield, Illinois. I was tuned to 380-USB.

353-MCW kHz, Feb 1 at 0717 UT, mixture of NDBs IN in INternaional
Falls, Minnesota; and LI in LIttle Rock, Arkansas; overlapping at
first they sounded like ``IOI``.

350-MCW kHz, Feb 1 at 0719 UT, NDB LA under near-local RG in OKC; but
no LA listed on this or 351, 352 kHz. ?? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 4033-USB, Sunday January 31 at 2308, MARS net with AAR6TB
and AAR6DG contacting, one or both sounding like NCS. I was of course
patrolling for pirates around here but none now.

My last log of AAR6TB was in April 2012y! As in DXLD 12-15:

``Texas Army MARS website search on AAM6RE leads to Ken Miller, a.k.a.
AAR6TB, Region Emergency Officer. One gets a lot more hits searching
on that second call, such as this:
https://www.txarmymars.org/news/news.php?id=138
concerning Collin Country, which is just north of Dallas near the KAIJ
ruins.`` But now Firefox warns of a potential security risk at that
site. Websearch on AAR6TB leads to this:

``Submitted by AAR6TB on Tue, 2014-08-26 20:05 --- HELLO MY NAME IS
KEN AND I'M THE SYSOP OF ARMY MARS RMS TRIMODE STATION AAR6TB...``
https://winlink.org/content/rms_trimode_station_aar6tb
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2071 monitoring: confirmed Sunday
January 31 on Area 51 via WBCQ 6159.935, but not from 2300: no signal
thru 2305, but recheck 2310, now we`re on in progress, so playback may
have started on time before transmitter cut on. Earlier at 2258, when
the WBCQ IS & ID loop should have been radiating, I was getting some
weak unresolved SSB 2-way circa 6162.

Also confirmed UT Monday February 1 at 0030 on WRMI 7730, VG S9+20
direct.

Also confirmed UT Mon Feb 1 at 0230 on WRMI 5800, S9+20; and 7780 JBA
carrier here, S7-S9 noisy into UTwente; also WRN sat/webcast. Next:

1901 UT Monday IRRS 7290 Bulgaria to WNW, 594-Italy
1030 UT Wednesday WRMI 5850 to NW
2100 UT Wednesday WRMI 7780 to NE
2200 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW
2300 UT Wednesday WRMI 9955 [jammed?] to SSE
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S

Full schedule including AM, FM, webcasts, satellite, podcasts:

not necessarily in US funds (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 7780 before 2300 UT Sun Jan 31 and 5850 after 2300, WRMIs
are not squealing or squeaking, unlike the past two days around this
hour, so apparently fixed the problem. Notice how the two related
words are identical except for one letter! There could also be
squeaming? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
