Subject: [WOR] CNR1 jammers or Sound of Hope?

It is not sufficient to go by language alone. The powerful jammers are
*far* more likely to be heard abroad than SOH. Ron Howard and I have
explained several times how to tell them apart.

exact right Alan,

re new 250/300 kW gear at Kimjae.

Their technical people really need to do a course in radio propagation
theory. Also, the number of "dummy" entries they have on the ITU and HFCC
databases is amazing - some of their frequencies which are listed have not
been used for some 30 years.

even during special broadcasts action, the selection of their meterband and
frequencies is beyond any knowledge of the propagation from Far East or
the listener situation in the reception area.

they realize only a fraction of their technical possibilities with the
Kimjae location gear.

Also the Ampegon TSW2300 tx, 300kW units reduced a little to 250kW maximal
only, due of their antenna matching limitation need.

The German ham operator DF8DX was once integrated in this
refurbishing work at Kimjae site in 2018.

This Ampegon (former Thomcast Thales) firm in Switzerland/Germany
re-built up/delivered some SW centers in Japan Hitachi-co-operation
in Yamata Japan, Kimjae South Korea, and also Ampegon RIGID antennas
in Taipei_Tamsui and Pao-Chung_Bau Jong ten 300 kW DRM possible featured
shortwave transmitters and twelve RIGID dipole broadcast antennas HR2/2/0.3
units at Taiwan island.

Also involved by 4 new x 500 kW SW units in Saudi Arabia,
and replaced some five analog shortwave transmitters units of 1995 year
at Kuwait Ministry of Information center in Al Kabd site.

Ampegon in addition upgraded three of Kuwait's 500 kW beasts
to full digital DRM integration.

Subject: Re: [WOR] [Swprograms] KBS World Radio

KBS leave these “PR Room” news posts on their Web site for a longer time
than is really necessary.

July 2019 was the date when KBS completed installation of a new series of
feeder lines (seen on Google Earth) and changes to the antenna switching
complex at the Kimjae station. I guess that the 250 kW transmitters can now
be connected to a greater number of antennas than before.

15575 kHz is also heard in the U.K. with a weak to fair signal at 1300 from
about May until early September. It is almost unusable after 1355 when VoA
Botswana begins on 15580.

The European service on 11810 has the same problem as the North American
frequency. It is only heard for a few months in summer, but completely
“dead” for the rest of the year. The power boost to 250 kW has made a
slight improvement in signal levels. When it does come through, the signal
is poor to fair and always with annoying flutter fading. I have tried to
persuade KBS to move English to 0800 on 15160, which would work well for
Europe throughout the year, but to no avail.

I’m pretty sure that the South American services don’t reach their target
either. KBS are using 11 MHz from 0100-0400, when according to propagation
charts, 17 MHz is the only band which would work. Their technical people
really need to do a course in radio propagation theory. Also, the number of
"dummy" entries they have on the ITU and HFCC databases is amazing - some of
their frequencies which are listed have not been used for some 30 years.

When I corresponded with their deputy Director of Engineering back in
2000/2001, he informed me that the only antenna for North America, is
designed for “15-16 MHz band”. It is pictured on a brochure I have dating
back to the mid 1980s and is the only one of the main curtain antennas which
has not been rebuilt in recent years. It really needs to be replaced with a
multi-band design. Whether the funding will become available to do this in
the future is anyone’s guess. A shame they never installed a couple of
rotatable curtains (Alliss/Ampegon types), but the size of the antenna site
at Kimjae is very restricted.
