Glenn Hauser logs March 24, 2021  View Printable Version

Logs
** ALASKA. 9535, March 24 at 1502 as I tuned in, the KNLS IS heard
once and then VP algo. But sked for Chinese at 1400-1500 only, so next
language/frequency must have come on late. Was checking whether Cuba
were off already instead of 1600* during standard time (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98-RCUSB, March 24 at 1521, LRA36 is on the air
again on a Wednesday afternoon; good S7-S8 into Pardinho, Brasil SDR;
music, frequent IDs, talk segments.

Waterfall tuned as above displays signal with sharp edges 15476.2 to
15478.7, i.e. 2.5 kHz wide, on the upper side. But since it still
shows same after sign-off with no signal, that must be an artifact of
the remote`s USB bandwidth rather than of the incoming signal alone.

Back to 1525: another canned ID; talk segment concludes with despedida
until next miércoles --- but does not sign off, back to music. Seems
they are playing brief pre-recorded segments. 1538 as if signing on
again, ``a partir de este momento``, then in German and English saying
that they are in Spanish, duh, and a fourth language, at first I
thought Italian? At 1545.5 yet another ``sign-on``, this time fourth
language more like Japanese? 1549 song about Antarctica; 1549.5 YL
greeting in the ``17th`` program, mentions station personnel,
discussion; 1556 contact info. 1605 another canned ID, part of which
goes, ``Nacional, Antárdida Argentina --- la radio pública``. 1615 ID
and more talk about COVID-19; 1618 email address, QSL offer; mostly
discussion about the ejército, as after all, this a paramilitary if
not totally military operation; ``en todo el país``; 1648 recheck
still talking but chopped off air abruptly at 1650*. Come to think of
it, never noted them with the name ``Radio Nacional Arcángel San
Gabriel``, but maybe missed it (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NIGERIA [non]. 11985, March 24 at 2107, S7-S9 sorta English: it`s
AWR MADAGASCAR in Nigerian Pidgin --- heavy accent, but occasional
words and phrases in clear English, all mixed up (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** OKLAHOMA [non]. 341-MCW kHz, March 24 at 0606, still no EI Enid, ND
beacon, but after several stops and restarts, I still expect it back,
sometime. Instead, JBA DNI, which is 25 watts from Sherman-DeNIson,
Texas just across the Red; not often audible, but now instead of or
atop, OIN, Oberlin, Kansas. I`ve yet to hear plenty of other 341s
listed in the Conterminous, Alaska, Canada, Greenland (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** PHILIPPINES [and non]. 12120, March 24 at 1454, Chinese under RTTY
and CODAR; VOA Tinang and jamming scheduled 1400-1500.

9825, March 24 at 1457, rock music S5-S7 with flutter, off at 1500.
Another VOA Chinese via Tinang and jamming, 1000-1500 (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 9690, Wed Mar 24 from 2300, REE token English, VG on NAm
frequency as heard in VA SDR, S9+10/40, Alison Hughes with a well-done
comprehensive news review - of the whole past week? Since most
broadcasts do not deal with hard current events. I also like her voice
and style, but could not help noticing her mispronouncing Sergei, and
Angela; interspersed bits of music until 2327 flamenco fill playout.

From next week this is expected to shift one real UT hour earlier to
2200 M/W/F, as usual due to the irrelevant imposition of DST in Spain.
This is totally irrational. First of all, by longitude, most of Spain
should be on GMT, as the Greenwich zero-meridian goes down the east
coast. The zulu timezone should extend 7.5 degrees east and 7.5
degrees west from there. Which means that the NW corner, Galicia,
*should* be on UT minus 1! Since Spain normally is effectively on DST
already, UT+1, this means most of the country will be *two* hours
ahead of mean `solar` time, and Galicia, *three*!!

Furthermore, advance publicity of A-21 schedule claims that the NAm
beam will be only on 17855, from morning on the weekends, all
afternoon, and as long as on air evenings until 0200* UT = 9 pm CDT,
after sunset here and the entire path in darkness. We can only hope
REE come to its senses and QSY down to, say, 9690, no later than 2200
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 5960, March 24 at 2302, VOT English to us manages to be on
the air today unlike yesterday, VG with ID and announcer name during
the news; as heard at UTwente, VG S9/+20. From next week, March 28,
this is to shift to 2200 on 9830 vs NAU PR RTTY, whenever it manage to
be on air at all. Last year the RTTY would sometimes be off by 2200,
but not dependably (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 8992-USB // weaker 15016-USB, March 24 until 1506*, last
part of alfanumeric crypto message with deliberate echo and whine,
outro as ``message of 37 characters; this is Uncle Joe, out``. unID US
military exercise with ever-changing tactical calls, suspected
originating from Andrews (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2078 monitoring: Richard Lemke, Alberta,
confirms the Wed Mar 24 at 1030 on WRMI 5850.

Also confirmed here Wed Mar 24 at 2100+ on WBCQ 7489.97v, S5-S7.

Also confirmed Wed Mar 24 at 2100 on WRMI 7780, JBA here but poor
S7-S8 to UTwente, VG S7/S9+10 at Maine SDR.

Also confirmed Wed Mar 24 at 2200 on WRMI 9955, S9/+20 to Maine over
jamming. Next, and last:

0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S

Logs
** CUBA. 6100, March 23 at 0630, S9 humbuzz from the only RHC still on
the air, otherwise just barely modulated if that`s the audio source.
Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 13435 trace, 13500, 13567 vs CODAR, 13633 S9; source 13700
S9+30; 13767, 13834, 13900 S5, 13967 & 14034 & 14100 traces at least
of F-natural tone, March 23 after 1418, distorted spurblobs today at
~65 kHz intervals, the closer ones with readable audio in NBFM; not in
the order tuned. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** CUBA. 11760, March 23 at 2332, the #1 historic RHC frequency is
humbuzzing at S9+20, much like that heard 17 hours ago on 6100:
suspected very same transmitter, except now it`s also fully modulated.
Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** EAST TURKISTAN. 7300, March 23 at 2327 S7-S9 Chinese with flutter.
HFCC shows CRI in Chinese via Urumqi this hour; from the land of
Chicom imperialist genocide against the Uyghurs.

I have just been way-out-of-bandscanning below 15 MHz, just above and
below 13 and 11 MHz, but no sign of CNR1 or Firedragon jammers which
used to occupy many frequencies in these ranges. I`m not hearing them
morning or evening, even when there are some such inband signals.
During the winter I assumed propagation was just not working, but now
I wonder if they and/or Sound of Hope are still all over those areas?
Wolfgang Bueschel was still hearing them in those three ranges, March
7 between 08 and 09 UT via remotes in Japan (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** MEXICO. 1050 kHz, March 23 at 0617 UT, choral Mexican war-mongering
NA is just ending rather late after HCM/CST midnight, and then full
florid legal ID for XEG, which I should record and copy verbatim,
including street address in Monterrey NL, and 100,000 watts
``efectivos`` --- as in ERP? AM stations normally are known by their
transmitter power, altho ERP can be calculated in different direxions
if they are not non-direxional, which XEG supposed be, day and night.
100/100 kW, WRTH and IRCA Log agree.

At the moment it`s atop, but plenty of QRM. Much of the time it is
buried in all the Unitedstatesian QRM vs this traditional Mexican
``clear`` channel. NRC AM Log shows 44 US stations at night, one 50
and one 10 kW at distances, likewise in Canada, but US mostly under
1000, under 100 or even under 10 watts! But it all adds up, piles on.
I could easily believe XEG really run much less than 100 kW. Remember
in the good? ole days when it was a border-blaster in English with a
simple address of Fort Worth, 11, Texas? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 5960, March 23 at 2315, once again no signal here from VOT
English to North America. By 2340 I`m checking UTwente SDR: Not there
either, but East Turkistan, land of Chicom imperialist genocide
against the Uyghurs, which is now exactly on-frequency. In case
something failed to get turned off on time, like often happens to 5960
when it manages to come on in the first place, I proceed to check all
the other TRT frequencies which were scheduled to end in the last few
hours, -2030, -2130, -2200, -2230, i.e. 5970, 6050, 6120, 9610, 9625
--- either nothing heard at all or more China/Turkistan. So much for
that.

BTW, I was amused by a report from Europe which said, ``Last night I
got a surprise; a new station that does not exist within the latest
Handbook appeared on 11540 kHz shortwave. It was TRT Radio Recep
Erdogan, who showed that the cult of personality has reached
unimaginable heights in Turkey.``

While one could easily imagine Recep E. naming a station after
himself, apparently the reporter does not realize that the name is
merely an ironic handle that Ivo Ivanov first deployed upon the jammer
against Dengê Welat; no doubt a spare Ermirler transmitter (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 400-MCW kHz, March 23 at 0605 UT, ND beacon AHQ, 25 watts
from Wahoo, Nebraska. Yahoo! Gotta log this one every so often. Wahoo
is a 4K town sorta between Omaha and Lincoln at the junxion of US 77
and State 92, i.e. between Prague and Ithaca; between Colón and
Valparaíso. Obviously the Wahoonians were looking for a less
derivative name than their neighbours (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2078 monitoring; next:
1030 UT Wednesday WRMI 5850 to NW
2100 UT Wednesday WRMI 7780 to NE
2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW
2200 UT Wednesday WRMI 9955 [jammed?] to SSE
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S

** U S A. Greg Hardison, CA, in the WOR iog, replies to my log of
Rollye James on WGN: "...Rollye James is sounding like a DXer..."

``Certainly one of the most amazing and fascinating minds with which
I've ever interacted belongs to Rollye. I was very happy to hear of
her new home at WGN/720, and hope they have the wisdom to keep her
there for just as long as she will stay. Rollye James has graced the
airwaves at many a station. She was briefly on the old KFMB/760 in San
Diego, where I went on with her via phone a few times, whilst running
the board up the coast/dial at KABC/790, unbeknownst to 790 mgmt., of
course!

She is a true radio-fanatic, in the same manner as the late great Art
Bell, and can build a fine show around any subject in the known
universe. A few nights ago on WGN, Rollye was working on an obsession
with old R&B love ballads of the early-to-mid 1960s. Heard some tunes
then & there I hadn't even thought of in nearly 60 years!)

Rollye is a born natural for WGN -- well, actually for any worthwhile
station, but especially for 'GN, which is mostly maintaining its
unique style under "new" ownership of Nexstar. Jim Bohannon is a small
step down for WGN as he fiddles with the world of right-wing
blatherhood beneath his talents, and it seems the only blatant mistake
Nexstar has made so far is the addition of proto-fascist
Trump-worshiping syndicated assclown Bill Cunningham on Sunday nights
--- although once again WGN is unique, in presenting both the best
(Rollye) and the worst (Billy) in commercial Talkradio!

I hereby declare my undying love and mighty recommendation for Rollye
James and her most-excellent weeknightly show on WGN. And if you can't
hear the huge signal, there's always www.wgnradio.com`` -- Greg
Hardison

https://wgnradio.com/rollye-james/rollye-james/

``Rochelle "Rollye" James is an American radio talk show host. She
hosted The Rollye James Show nationally and on international shortwave
on WWCR from 2000 to 2011. Rollye revived her show, broadcasting
weeknights 10p.m.–midnight, via live stream and podcast on June 19,
2013. Wikipedia`` (via Glenn Hauser, WOR)

** U S A. 1140, March 23 at 0619 UT, once again tonight, KXRB Sioux
Falls SD is dominating the channel to the south instead of legally
aiming all its night power NW: 0622 between C&W tunes, convenient
simple ID only as ``KXRB``. Oook, last night`s log was misdated March
29 instead of 22, as were two others I`ve had to reissue corrected!
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 7360, March 23 at 2328, S8-S9 open carrier with flutter,
marred by Cuban noise jamming splash from 7355/7365. Something
interesting about to open? But still no modulation heard past 2331.
HFCC shows Iran in French due west for W & C Africa, an hour from
2320. Could also be CNR in Tibetan from Beijing site until 2400 (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

Thanks Glenn,

BONAIRE. VOA attempted to get airtime on TWR 800 Bonaire last year,
in order to reach adjacent Venezuela without the inconvenience of
shortwave, but first started after 0000 UT with HJHJ 600 Barranquilla,
Colombia, as I monitored last summer. Now a TWR deal is in effect per
this via El Dial, Spain:

``Antillas Holandesas
AER, 20/03/2021 18:39, https://aer.org.es/archivos/26720, EA2-0800
Según Erminy Fernando en el grupo de FB Cadena DX, la VOA ha iniciado
transmisiones a Venezuela desde las instalaciones de TWR en Bonaire
(800). Reportado 2100-2230 con el programa “Venezuela 360”,
presumiblemente de lunes a viernes. (Rafael Rodríguez en el grupo
DXing.info fb, vía Ydun’s Medium Wave Info).(via El Dial)``

Now that it`s Monday March 22, I check for it via TWR`s own Bonaire
SDR. At 2142 an interview is underway with someone fluent in Spanish
but with obvious American accent -- I wonder why such people don`t
make a little more effort to tighten up their dixion. Seems to be
about the border situation; and then another one about the pandemic in
the US, neither of which very pertinent to Venezuela. 2159 VOA ID and
sign-off, quick ID as ``PJB-98, Apreciamos su sintonia`` and back for
more VOA. 98? What`s that about, an FM frequency? There`s no PJB or
any other Bonaire FM station in the 98s listed in WRTH 2021.

While sufficient, the 800 signal is not superstrong on TWR`s own SDR
--- they must be deliberately attenuating it, understandably. On the
waterfall, much stronger signals show on 550, 710 and 910 which are
obviously Caracas, and 860 from Curacao (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

VENEZUELA. 6205.031v, March 23 at 0005, 0007, 0010.5 between tunes,
Radio Onda Corta Venezuela is now inserting Morse Code IDs as ROCV. S7
into Bonaire SDR, the AM signal remains rather distorted but sounds
less so when tuned in SynchAM mode. Another one at recheck 0120 (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)
