Glenn Hauser logs July 21-22-23, 2024  View Printable Version
Tuesday, July 23 2024

Logs
** CANADA. 14670 RC USB, July 22 at 2209, CHU timesignals back on, S9,
so I resynchronise my watch (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 9700, July 23 at 0113, S9+25 of dead air direct from RHC, or
maybe a trace of modulation? 6000 is only S7/S9 of dead air. 15230 is
S6/S7 JBM seems English? No signals on 11760 or 11950. Something`s
always wrong at RHC. The Other Side:

``Castroism caps prices to remain in power in Cuba --- The only
possible outcome when prices are capped as an anti-inflationary policy
is chronic shortages, the proliferation of the black market and,
finally, a spike in inflation.
Rafaela Cruz, La Habana 18 Jul 2024 - 18:40 CEST
A line at an MSME in Havana. 14ymedio

Sweat trickled down his calves, accumulating in the worn-out tennis
shoes he wore without socks; his feet, slipping around inside those
shoes, made embarrassing squeaks as he walked, drawing glances that at
another time would make him blush, but, after 45 minutes of waiting in
line, nothing mattered to him more than finally standing in front of
the clerk...``
https://diariodecuba.com/economia/1721320836_56089.html

MSME? What`s that? Never explained; we are supposed to know it.
Googling it leads to -- India?! ``Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium
Enterprises`` -- and as I added in a report a couple years ago:

```This article never explains what MSME means! I Googled it: ``Micro,
Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs)`` There must be quite a different
term and abbr. in original Spanish; EMPM?`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** EAST TURKISTAN [and non]. 13740, July 22 at 0050, sounds like hymn,
but must not be since listed as 2300-0300 CRI Spanish via Kashgar,
land of imperialist ChiCom genocide against Uyghurs and other Moslems;
S9+10 with flutter, and the OSOB/SSOB except for 13790 ALGERIA (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)
** OKLAHOMA. 27184.86 AM, July 22 at 0042, S9+10 open carrier from
Enid CB pirate (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** OKLAHOMA. 102.3, July 22 at 2018 UT, routine bandscan on caradio
during `dead` conditions hits something here unusual, not // 740 KRMG;
with national ads, weather ``from Classic Communications, Q-102`` i.e.
KWDQ Woodward. Tho 100/100 kW, less heard than other fullpowers there.
Or rather Q102 per WTFDA FMDB, no hyphen and could also be Q102.3. If
there were a hyphen, it could only be WVRQ-FM, Viroqua WI, but I bet
they don`t pronounce the hyphen (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** SPAIN. 17715, July 21 at 2301, t/in just in time to hear IS start
after weekend s/off of SAm frequency until 2303.6*. 17855 for NAm
already off. In fact, Paul Walker says he was not hearing it at all on
Sat or Sun. I don`t pay much attention to REE on weekends since there
is no English; tho I could understand their Spanish, there aren`t
enough hours in the day and lots of it`s silly ballgames (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)
** SPAIN. 17855, Mon July 22 at 2200, this REE frequency for NAm is
still AWOL, but token SNR English audible almost as well, S9+10/20
direct on SAm channel 17715; then 15520 offback to ME, which is
sometimes better depending on MUF; and 15390 for Africa detectable.
Preview topix: Iberian Lynx numbers have recovered to 2000, no longer
endangered, will interview Guillermo López of an organization
protecting them; and a report about some code? News 2201.6 leading
with Pres. Biden dropping out. 2219.5 contact info, then on the
Moroccan Family Code about oppression of women, called shuma? or
search leads to: ``In 2004, Morocco reformed its family code, known as
the “Moudawana.” The “Moudawana” expands women's rights and
protections in relation to marriage, divorce, child custody, and
inheritance. The new law promotes the principles of justice and
equality between men and women``. I didn`t catch what`s new about this
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** TURKEY. 11785+, July 21 at 2200 and further chex, NO signal of VOT
English into UTwente; nor on previous goofs 11795, 9875. Something`s
always erroneous at Emirler. So we miss the weekly `Letterbox`; one
more chance, UT Monday July 22 after 0300 on 7275, 6165 --- NO, BOTH
those are OFF at 0317 & 0340 UTwente chex. Something else is even more
erroneous at Emirler (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** TURKEY. 11785.020-, July 22 at 2159, VOT English not off the air,
S9+10/20 direct but local noise level still a problem. 2218
``with-you-every-hour`` promo, music. 2232 into UTwente when measured,
S9+25/40, multi-lingual ID filler reel, music. 2239 `That`s Why` by Ms
Badax about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. 2244 music.
2249 ``always-by-your-side`` promo, music. 2254 s/off by Ms Badax as
if this were the 1230 on 17620. 2255 IS until 2255.6*.
Also: ``Voice of Turkiye Emirler station will be off air 1000-1600 UT
for engineering work on July 23 and 24, according to an announcement
on the station. Alan Holder, G4ZBH, Isle of Wight, U.K.``, WOR iog
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** U S A. 11880, July 22 at 0052, S9+20/30 of open carrier, preceding
the 01-02 UT KBS Spanish relay via Grimesland. Is it really necessary
to burn all those kW just to ``warm up`` a transmitter, probably more
than just 8 minutes wasted? Is KBS charged for that? They could at
least modulate it with something, like KBS IS, YDD, SSB NA or even --
VOA news in English!? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2252 monitoring: confirmed Sunday
July 21 at 2000 on WRN Europe stream.
Also confirmed Sunday July 21 at 2130 on SW Gold Radio, Germany,
6160.002- at S9+10 and 3975.004- at S8/S9 into UTwente.
Also confirmed Sunday July 21 at 2330 on WRMI 7570, S9/+15 into
Georgia SDR.
Also confirmed UT Monday July 22 at 0030 on WRMI 7780, noisy S9
direct.
Also confirmed UT Monday July 22 from 0302 on Area 51 via WBCQ 6160
-70 Hz = 6159.930, S9/+10 into NH SDR. Next:
Also confirmed Monday July 22 at 1930 on SW Gold Radio, Germany,
6160.002- at S9/+10 and 3975.004- at S8/9+10 into UTwente. Next:
0330 UT Tuesday WRMI 7780 to SW;
1300 UT Tuesday WRMI 9955 to SSE [also web-, phonecast; jammed?];
2000 UT Tuesday IRRS 1323-Italy;
2330 UT Tuesday WRMI 9395 to NNW;
2330 UT Tuesday SW Radio, Germany 3975;
1930 UT Wednesday SW Radio, Germany 3975 & 6160;
2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW;
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S;
1630 UT Thursday SW Radio, Germany 6160.
week to Tony Pavick, Hope BC, Canada, for a contribution via PayPal to
woradio at yahoo.com
** U S A. WTWW: George McClintock info circa 01 UT July 22: power
outage instead of WOR July 20 at 0400: widespread tnx to TVA hydro or
nuclear failure covering much of TN. Internet was also out so he could
not remotely turn transmitter back on when power resumed. Misc. other
items: Hope to have #3 transmitter running in a sesqui- or bi-week;
current problem is lack of control card for its air conditioner. Bob
Biermann has cancer. Ted Randall was broadcasting from Lebanon
hamfest, but did not show up today, raising concerns about his health.
Harris xmtr has a loose panel which flaps when the AC is on. TOMBS
wants to get on WTWW, and probably will tho George is not happy about
Bro. Stair`s anti-Catholic and anti-papal comments.
And later an email: ``WTWW: water leak --- 9 gallons of water leaked
when a hose that was secured with a wire tie broke free. This wire tie
was placed on by the previous engineer. WTWW now has a metal
clamp that will prevent this from happening again. We had to go and
purchase distilled water to make up for the water loss. The #1
transmitter did not get back on until 7 pm Central. George McClintock
7-22-2024`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** U S A. 9335-9365 approx., July 22 at 2212, filthy WWCR-2 signal
with squeals and squawks if you tune either side from 9350 which is
S9+40/50. Likewise or even worse WWCR-4, 9965-9995 with TOMBS which is
S9+60 on center 9980. Other freqs of #2 are 5935, 7490, 12160; of #4,
7520, 5890. Similar problems affect 5890 & 5935, all these exacerbated
by excessive signal strength; on 85 or 90 degree azimuths, or almost
directly off the back to here. Not so much the #1 & #3 frequencies
allegedly at 46 and 40 degrees (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** U S A. July 22 at 0617+ UT, distinctive voice of a guest on `Coast
to Coast AM` about UFOs or something, audible on multiple frequencies
almost in a row, but not exactly synchronized, 980, 960, 950, 940,
930; also 850, 840, 690, 600, 580, 560, 1150. Or course there are many
more if you dig. Noticed because of an echo under local 960 KGWA; also
under 1150 KSAL KS. Showsite
https://www.coasttocoastam.com/stations/
is organized by state rather than frequency. So a few guesses from
last year`s NRC AM Log listings, based on proximity, previous log,
night power: 1150: WJBO LA, KRMS MO or WIMA OH. 980: KMBZ MO. 960:
KZIM MO or WERC AL, and BTW KGWA not shown with C2C tho is on
showsite. 950: KWOS MO. 940: KIXZ TX. 930: WTAD IL. The others should
be obvious (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** U S A. 1030, July 22 at 0614 UT, weather, ``NewsRadio WBZ``, really
Boston? Yes, 0615 Roxbury mentioned: gotta know your suburbs. Seldom
heard but always a pleasure as the most distant ``clear`` in the US
for me, 1485 miles, slightly further than Seattle. WBZ advantage is
direxional-west night and day to avoid serving the Atlantic and
beyond. Lite QRM in Spanish, which could be Memphis, Kansas City, or
Corpus Christi if not Mexico (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** U S A. 1130, July 22 at 0040 UT, silly sportstalk from KWKH, still
no KLEY KS. In case it matter, since they never powered down from 250
to 1 watt when operable, KLEY SS/SR times for July are 0145/1115;
August 0130/1145. And 50/50 kW KWKH pattern change times: July
0130/1115; August 0100/1145. But July 22 at 1531 UT, KLEY is back on.
At 0143-0146 UT July 23 I am monitoring 1130 on the E/W longwire. KWKH
sportstalk is already dominant, mixing with music from KLEY. Neither
to the eye on the S-meter nor to the ear to the phone is there any
change in KLEY signal when it legally has to drop from 250 to ONE
WATT; but it conveniently IDs at 0145 as ``104.1 & 1130 KLEY`` (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)
** U S A. 1440v, July 22 at 0624 UT and many other times, LAH = low
audible heterodyne against the 1440.00 pileup. Per
http://mwlist.org/mwoffset.php?khz=1440
it`s most likely KFUV Little Rock AR, nothing else in USA so far above
or below, at 1439.9678 as of 2021-04-04, i.e. 32.2 Hz off (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)
UNIDENTIFIED. 15133-15155 approx., July 22 at 2207, OTHR clickery
again, INTRUDER altho no broadcast victims in this range now (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)
UNIDENTIFIED. 15809 USB, July 22 at 0047, weak 2-way net, or rather
multi-way, language uncertain but unseems Spanish or English. Hardly
any broadcast signals on 19 mb. The only hits on 15809 in the UDXF iog
are in three numbers-station logs, not as a frequency. Nothing in
Klingenfuß 2022 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
Glenn Hauser logs July 21, 2024  View Printable Version
Sunday, July 21 2024
Logs
** CHINA. 21490, July 21 at 0114, JBA Chinese, presumed CNR1 jammer vs
Sound of Hope. Also carriers but no mod presumably likewise, on 18985,
18970, 18965 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** GERMANY. 9670, July 21 at 0131, music at S9+10, no doubt Channel
292. Hard to believe this be only 2 kW as licensed, even considering
antenna gain. Publicized as 10 kW; has been known to get time on
Moosbrunn, AUSTRIA, 100 kW, but presumably only for sold programming
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** ITALY [and non]. 18138 USB, July 21 at 0119, IK2FST calls KA4WHT,
after Paul, S9+20 in Pembroke Pines FL calls CQ 17, but instead he
answers some other Eurostation, Germany? Not heard here; anyhow,
QRZ.com: ``IK2FST Italy flag Italy, cecilio SCARPANTI, Lodi, LO 26900,
Italy``. At 0121 on 18155 USB, had a DL8++ in the Black Forest, with a
WB9 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** MEXICO. 770, July 21 at 0700, nothing but Spanish, not a bit of
WABC or KKOBs, promo `La Radio de la República` show at some afternoon
time, ``en Grupo Fórmula, 970 AM``. Likely XEACH Monterrey NL: yes,
that chex on website:
https://www.radioformula.com.mx/nacional/2023/7/17/cambios-de-horario-en-radio-formula-se-mueven-chumel-joaquin-ruiz-healy-desde-el-lunes-24-771840.html
but note that was a *year ago*. Lots of stuff on website, but can`t
find a plain old program schedule or network affiliate list (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)
** NEW ZEALAND. 28228 CW, July 21 at 0105, JBA OBOB almost copied
after multiple passes with fading, EEEEEEE DE ZL3TEN and more
including ANT; was not sure of last letter, seemed like F rather than
EN, but got to be this per WGB list:
``28228 ZL3TEN - Rolleston, Christchurch NZL RE66ej - #0 (09 Jan 2024)
Note: ID + grid + eee`` -- QRZ.com: ``ZL3TEN New Zealand flag New
Zealand, The Christchurch VHF DX Group, C/o 18 Westbelt, Rangiora
7400, New Zealand`` - I`ve heard it before (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** NORTH AMERICA. 6880 USB, July 21 at 0100, OPOB at S9+10 equal to
HSNL, jazz/blues, 0102 non-ID announcement, song. These say it was
Texas Radio Shortwave via Mix Radio International, both before and
after 0100:
https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,131712.0.html
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** OKLAHOMA. 27184.82 approx., July 21 at 0112, strong and steady
local CB pirate carrier but no modulation now and no other channels.
27184.79 approx., July 21 at 1448, S9 open carrier, with intermittent
rude vocal QRM slightly higher, ~27184.94. No skip in now (Glenn
Hauser, Enid, WOR)
** OKLAHOMA [and non]. `TIME FOR A RECKONING`: KANSAS FARMERS BRACE
FOR CUTS TO SAVE OGALLALA AQUIFER
By Kevin Hardy, Allison Kite, Stateline.org and The Kansas Reflector
(TNS)
https://www.pressreader.com/usa/las-vegas-review-journal/20240627/282406994540459
What has this to do with radio? Surely there be a correlation between
the Ogallala Aquifer and the central US region with greatest ground
conductivity. That means enhanced coverage of MW and LW signals by
groundwave, as we are so fortunate to live in that area. Look for the
30s, which are found nowhere else in the USA - except along the Texas
Gulf coast:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:United_States_Effective_Ground_Conductivity_Map.png
(Glenn Hauser, Enid OK)
** TURKEY. Continued from last report: 11785.009, VOT English via
UTwente: 2249 ``always-by-your-side`` promo, music. 2253 s/off by OM
not ignoring SW but as always for the wrong transmission, 1230 on
17620, then satellite and internet. 2254 IS, 2256 restart IS with
German IDs until 2258.2* chopoff. Something`s always erroneous at
Emirler (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** U K Q O G B A N I. BBC Proms 2024 season underway --- ``Hey Glenn,
I hope all is well. I haven't heard you mention anything about the BBC
Proms this year. I found this link to the Proms page and it started
yesterday. I hope you enjoy the selections this year.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/5pydkxT0wJb5FB5Z3WwvTVs/proms-2024-your-guide-through-the-season
Chris Campbell, Ohio``
Tnx, Chris; I had sought info on BBC websites but kept getting only
2023 stuff.
For Radio 3 linx to listen on demand, 3 so far. Usually these expire a
month after, or a month after the Last Night:
** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2252 monitoring: confirmed Saturday
July 20 at 2300 on WTWW 9474.980, S9+5/20 into Maryland SDR; first I
tried UTwente which I already had running for Turkey, registered S7/S9
but JBA to the ear. Not a lobe toward Europe? Who knows. HFCC once
showed due south, 180 degrees, but it certainly does well due west.
Strangely, latest HFCC has no TWW entries on 5085 or 9475, rather
three frequencies not yet? in use, 5830, 9930, 12105; with 9930 only
at 180.
NOT confirmed UT Sunday July 21 at 0000 on WRMI 9955 into Maryland
SDR, music instead, some of it gospel, tho WOR still on WRMI websked.
Canceled without notice? What next?
Confirmed UT Sunday July 21 at 0331 about 6 minutes into so started
circa 0325 the 0315v on WA0RCR, 1860 AM, MO, S9+10/15 into nearby SDR,
with HSNL.
Also confirmed Sunday July 21 at 1048 the 1030 on WRMI 9955; had not
checked in longtime but fortunately happened to awaken. Was supposedly
on internet only at this hour per skedgrid; but now the ``except on
weekends`` applies.
Also confirmed Sunday July 21 at 1900 on IRRS via AM Italia, 1322.995,
S8.5 noisy into UTwente across Europe, but better than Trieste SDR
gets it. Next:
2130 UT Sunday SW Radio, Germany 3975 & 6160;
2330 UT Sunday WRMI 7570 to NW;
0030 UT Monday WRMI 7780 to SW;
0300vUT Monday WBCQ Area 51 6160v to WSW [irregular];
1930 UT Monday SW Radio, Germany 3975 & 6160;
0330 UT Tuesday WRMI 7780 to SW;
1300 UT Tuesday WRMI 9955 to SSE [also web-, phonecast; jammed?];
2000 UT Tuesday IRRS 1323-Italy;
2330 UT Tuesday WRMI 9395 to NNW;
2330 UT Tuesday SW Radio, Germany 3975;
1930 UT Wednesday SW Radio, Germany 3975 & 6160;
2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW;
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S;
1630 UT Thursday SW Radio, Germany 6160.
** U S A. ** U S A. WTWW: George McClintock forwards a series of
messages with photos sent to Al Rillera, apparently a visiting
engineer, as captioned:
``The Harris SW100 AC breaker went bad and would not turn on. It was
replaced with a new one. A lot went bad while you were gone. More bad
news to follow tomorrow. We look forward to your return to Nashville.
The #1 transmitter high voltage ON, went bad and the transmitter would
not turn off. REPLACED.
Inductors cleaned. Dirty inductor in the SW100 Harris. Cleaned and
lubricated.
I have just removed the 4 loading inductors (coils) from the Harris
SW100 number 3 transmitter and placed them in cleaning vinegar. After
washing, they are ready to be put back into place. These coils were so
dirty that the motors were having a difficult time moving them. I had
to put a voltage regular in that had been removed and the wires tied
together by the previous engineer. The high voltage power supply is
working well. George McClintock  7-17-2024
Some of these resistors on the power module have changed value and had
to be replaced.
This is the phase detector that was bad, causing the transmitter to
turn off after a very few minutes or seconds.
Unless I am mistaken, this is the relay to keep the SW100 blowers
running after shutdown. It does not work. No adjustment seems to make
it work. I am in the process of getting another relay from the
transmitter in storage in the middle building. George McClintock
7-19-2024`` (via Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** U S A. 7505, July 21 at 0134 tune-in, JBA carrier, then big open
carrier on and off; by 0136 rock at S9+30/40: guess that would have to
be gospel rock, on WRNO. IIRC in seasons past there has been something
Eastern Hemispherian sharing 7505, but nothing else listed now. Maybe
the JBA carrier was WRNO exciter only (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** U S A. 1130 kHz, July 21 at 0703 UT, no music, nothing but stupid
sportstalk from tigric KWKH LA: KLEY Wellington (Wichita) KS must be
off instead of usual 250 W day power cheatery at night; or legal one
watt? Hardly, at 1617 UT recheck, no daytime groundwave signal either
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
UNIDENTIFIED. 15140-15165 approx., July 21 at 0124, OTH radar
clickery; seems more of that lately inside broadcast bands, but
nothing to QRM here.
7480-7495 approx., July 21 at 0135, OTH radar QRMing `SW Saturday
Night` on WBCQ 7490-; not 25 kHz wide and not so strong but still
audible under J.P.
7405-7422 approx., July 21 at 0137, OTH radar, same sound as above
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
