Logs
** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98 RCUSB, April 27 at 1437-1440, again this
Wednesday NO signals from LRA36 into four Brazilian SDRs, but most are
getting some fast clicking, OTH radar? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CANADA. 284 MCW kHz, April 27 at 0702 UT, dash and QD, 500 watt NDB
at The Pas, Manitoba. I would much rather hear the others on 284, RT
at Rankin InleT NU, or YOC at Old Crow YT.

[and non] 332 MCW kHz, April 27 at 0705 UT, dash and QT, 1000 watt NDB
at Thunder Bay ON, mixed with weaker but much closer IC Wichita KS
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CHINA. 15970, 15920, 15800, April 27 at 0647, Chinese JBA, and
15760 S5/S9: all are CNR1 jammers against Sound of Hope per Aoki.

15785, April 27 at 0648, different Chinese as this is CRI via Xianyang
site (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6100, April 27 at 0653, RHC in wrong language Spanish but
chopped off air at 0654*; leaving only 6165 in English. Something`s
always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORFOLK ISLAND. Radio DX Test transmission --- Conversation UT
April 27 with Nick Hacko, VK9DX as I posted exclusively on the WOR iog
at 0440:

NH: Hi Glenn - making some progress --- the vertical is up and tuned
to 5045 kHz and with bit of luck I hope to put at least a carrier
around local sunset.

GH: Nick, how much power will you be running? and How active is the
other 5045 station lately, at what hours?

NH: I could not detect any signals at my sunset until late for the
past week or so. The amp is not complaining at 300 W carrier, but that
would be probably max I could run right now.

GH: Last report I find is March 14 when Ron Howard, California was
hearing Bay Islands Radio from 1130 UT = not clear whether tune-in
time, or not audible until then. I see that your sunset today is 0618
UT, while in Brisbane it is 0720 UT.

So should we tip the group already to be alert tonight? Are you
prepared to QSL? Despite NI`s integration into Australia, it`s
probably considered a separate radio country by many.

NH: I will start tuning around in 2 hours or so {~0600 UT April 27}.
Feel free to give the group heads up, any report received - even just
a carrier - would be appreciated. vk9dx@clockmaker.com.au

Yes, I will print a special QSL card for this (and any future)
transmission. My only concern right now is to get the signal right, I
have no broadcast experience whatsoever. Check my QRZ.com page (VK9DX)
for photos of the actual location.
https://www.qrz.com/lookup/vk9dx

GH: Great! Nick says there will be a familiar voice on the tests.

GH later: At 0606 UT April 27 I had just tuned the Brisbane SDR to
5045, nothing at first but then a JBA carrier, too weak to lock.
Probably Norfolk, as if the Qsld 5045 were on it would surely be
stronger there.

At 0611 I move to the Upper Hutt NZ SDR, where I do hear IDs
intermittently in AM mode. I record some of them at 0613, and guess
what, it`s me! Nick had asked me a few hours before to record IDs for
this, and was also going to use the latest WOR as test audio. On next
WOR 2136 I shall include recordings as heard off air to remote, and
the original studio recording I sent him.

Computer is off and by 0642 I`m checking 5045 direct and do not detect
a JBA carrier. But at my final check 0717, there *is* a JBA carrier to
Enid.

I wonder if Radio DX has an official callsign? The other three private
SW stations in Australia are not shown with any in WRTH, but V- or A-
callsigns would be officially expected on licences even if never used
on air. I suppose Nick will be testing some more in this timespan as
long as Queensland be off.

Previous and further monitoring reports from WOR iog posts:

Walt Salmaniw, BC at 0616: I'm at the dials here in Masset. I don't
know whether it was Norfolk Island or not, but right at 0600 and a few
seconds before, I could see an intermittent carrier. On for, perhaps,
10 seconds and then off for a few seconds. Nothing again until carrier
on at about 0605:15 with a good loud carrier. Couldn't make anything
out, though. Strength really decreased over the next minute and
carrier off again at 0607:10 or so. Carrier on for a second or two
only, then off, then back and off again. Quite easy to hear the
carrier using CW. Back again 0608:25, relatively strong again. Just
seems to be an open carrier. I'd better send something off! There
might have been some speech at 0610, but too weak to be sure. Off, now
back again at 06:11. Yes, definitely some speech by OM at 0611:40, but
off immediately thereafter. "You are listening to..." seems to be
repeated a couple times, then carrier off. Repeated each time. Walt

Bruce Churchill, CA at 0620: Norfolk Island is in fact operating from
0606 tune at the KFS SW site in Half Moon Bay CA. “You are listening
to Radio DX, transmitting from Norfolk Island on 5,045 kilohertz”
[sic] repeated every few seconds, presumably by Nick [sic]. Carrier
being turned on and off. SINPO 35333.

Glenn, OK circa 0623: I`m also hearing it via the Upper Hutt NZ SDR.
S4/S5 but high noise level about the same. Nothing but IDs repeated
several times with long pauses, can`t tell if carrier stays on or not.
AM. At 0619 comes in much stronger, noise level down and/or power
bumped up. 0620 carrier off apparently as quieting gone, just noise.
0621 back on with ID. Recorded and will provide later. Have not yet
tried it direct but doubtful. Glenn

Chris Mackerell, NZ at 0634: Can you hear anything on my Marahau
Kiwis? I'm out for dinner but have left my Elad recording. Cheers,
Chris

Bruce at 0637+: Should be able to hear from any NZ Kiwi site – the
NZRDXL Mangawhai site was quite good at 0605.

First heard at 0605 from the NZRDXL Kiwi site but the signal was good
enough that I decided to switch to the KFS SW site near San Francisco
at 0606 using their SW TCI 532 antenna (pointed at 240 degrees, I
believe).

Music heard at 0641 with Nick [sic] speaking – hard to understand with
static level. Nice signal at S2-3, overall SINPO at 2v3/5/3/3/2.

Walt: Bruce, that's Glenn Hauser's WOR!

Bruce: Roger that! On again at 0643.

Walt: And guess who came on at 0641? Our very own, Mr Glenn Hauser
with WOR. Fantastic! Quite readable signal, and very little noise on
my brand new 290 deg DKAZ. Oops, looks like Glenn is off again at
0642:15. Walt in Masset, BC

Now some digital interference on the upper side, but short-lived, so
not too problematic. Glenn comes and goes with the transmitter! He's
off right now (0648 UT)

Bruce at 0703: Test may be over. Nothing heard since 0650:45 (last WOR
xmsn was 0649:15 to 0650:45). The good news is that Nick can be heard
in WCNA and very likely beyond when he becomes operational. If 300
watts is the power, it’s working!

Nick at 0707: [WOR] NF test transmission update: technical issues.
As you can clearly see - dealing with teething / technical issues. In
a nutshell: fluctuating between two extremes: exciter either not
producing enough power to drive the amp properly, or when it does, the
amp's temp protection kicks in and shuts it down. My apology to all
who tuned in to give it a go. The good news is that the antenna itself
is happy with whatever juice comes in and does good job radiation that
RF your way. I will continue to look for a solution, but most likely
there will be just more of this intermittent transmission until
daytime tomorrow. Hopefully you will be able to catch at least a
decent chunk. The plan is to stay up until West Coast sunrise. Thank
you again. Nick

Eric Fetters-Walp, Lake Stevens, Washington, USA: Via the SW-aimed
antenna on the KPH SDR in California, I caught some of Glenn's voice
fading in starting around 0713. Still audible at 0715 UT. Nothing
definitively audible at first on my own radio here in Lake Stevens,
Washington, but I did get faint talking, just barely audible, around
0717 UTC when I checked. Thanks for the testing!

Nick at 1008 UT: Norfolk Island RadioDX now off air --- At 0915 out of
blue, Island Music Radio from Queensland jumped on frequency with that
ungodly rock. Last thing we want is an on air shouting match :-) so
I've pulled the plug. The short term goal is to get the transmitter
running at a steady pace of 300W, lay more radials at the antenna base
and then transmit when channel is clear.

There is one major thing that would work for North American listeners
- Norfolk Island is 1500 km east from Australian mainland, meaning not
only that my signal will be stronger in NA but also an hour and half
advantage propagation wise. If Island Radio intends to transmit 24/7
on 5045 that would be an issue only for European listeners.

Once again, your reports and messages of encouragement are truly
appreciated. If you hear rock and profanities on 5045 rest assured
that wasn't Norfolk you've tuned in; SO those listening reports should
go to IMR. 73 Nick VK9DX RadioDX

Tom Daly: Nick, I just looked at your QRZ page & the pix of Norfolk
Is. are beautiful. Looks like the kind of place that when someone
visits they may never want to leave. Thanks for posting them. Tom
(all via Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

carrier on fundamental 3945 which I don`t even bother to check earlier
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

English, woman reading news, fair-poor signal. At around 2342 a second
signal joined in, a Chinese (again, presumed) speaker on same frequency,
not completely covering the original signal but strong enough to be
annoying. Distinctive (in a good way) AIR Interval Signal at 2345 and
then into scheduled AIR Chinese program, which consisted of Chinese
speaking and Indian music. Per schedule on DX India website.

Note: previous report should have been subjected April 24-25-26, not
23-24-25

** CANADA [and non]. 346 MCW kHz, April 26 at 0613 UT, dash and YXL,
500 watt ND beacon at Sioux Lookout, Ontario, JBA; only other one is
the 1000 watt dash and WG on 248 MCW from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Major
storm area in N America now is circa Tamaulipas. FYI, besides the high
atmospheric noise levels of the season, I am still stymied in the
380-420 kHz area by protracted elevated noise from local line or
unknown device. I did just manage to detect on 417 MCW, 25 watt IY
from Charles cItY, Iowa. Even under ideal conditions, I`m at point
where any new LW/MW beacon logs are sparse (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CHINA. 21530, April 26 at 0054, JBA caarrier; 18900 JBA music
S6-S8; 18970 weaker, all are known CNR1 jammers vs Sound of Hope; and
17560 JBA carrier, CNR1 jammer against VOA Chinese via Philippines
this hour only. Interesting propagation beacons over the dayside
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CHINA. 15800, April 26 at 1458, CNR1 with good strength, timesignal
to 1500*. Aoki shows only this jammer vs SOH at 0000-1600 (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6165, April 26 at 0618, S9+30 of dead air in English from
RHC; only other one is 6060, S9+10/20 of English with some hum.
Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 9830, April 26 at 2245, VOT is on and even audible direct
with music, fair S9/+10 as long as tuned LSB to evade RTTY USB (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** UKRAINE [non]. 1386, April 27 at 0000-0005, UR1 via LITHUANIA, with
`Ukraine: Security Issue` English segment, good into UTwente, but with
noise bursts mostly on with brief breaks, not jamming? Not so clear
into Bryansk, Russia, SDR, but constant background noise level no
different than adjacent frequencies (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2135 monitoring: confirmed UT
Tuesday April 26 at 0030 on WRMIs into Knoxville SDR: 9395 S9+30, 9455
S9+10. Crisper modulation on 9395, lower fi with some warble on 9455.
At 0057 direct: 9455 S9+10/20, 9395 S8/9+10.

Also confirmed Tuesday April 26 at 2230 on WRMI 9955, S8/S9 direct and
undermodulated but no jamming audible at first; by 2257 jamming is
building up, but by 2309 R. Libertad is still well audible here atop
it. Next:

1000 UT Wednesday Unique R, Australia 5035-USB or 3210-USB
1030 UT Wednesday WRMI 5850 to NW
2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW
