Glenn Hauser logs January 21-22, 2022  View Printable Version

Logs
** EGYPT. 9899.605, Jan 21 at 2201 & 2226 chex via UTwente, R. Cairo
is on at S9+25/35 but almost dead air in English, occasional traces of
modulation peaks. Wiggle that patchcord! Would that the fix were that
simple. Something`s always egregious at Egypt (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ITALY [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO is scheduled to be pre-empted once
a month on third Friday by IRRS at 1915, and indeed at 1918 check Jan
21, music is playing on 7290 via Bulgaria, into UTwente, weak with
QRM; and on 1323 from AM Italia. Anyway I check out the QRM situation:
918 is off leaving La Inter, Madrid to dominate. 1323 has CCI, but at
2000 via Noale SDR I hear the IRRS ``sign-off`` with the other Verdi
theme, mixing with end of minority German service from Romania, and a
long tone. We hope it will be better at 2130 for remaining airing of
WOR: see USA [and non] (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA [and non]. 94.3: On Jan 20 we got this note: ``Glenn, of
interest in the local Enid area: I see that KLGB-LP 94.3 turned in its
license on January 19, so that frequency should be open for your FMDX.
Stephen Luce, Houston, Texas``

I immediately confirmed that KLGB-LP is off the air. While ``open``
for DX, it`s also open for a much needed public radio translator from
KGOU at OU in Norman; or KUCO-FM, classical Edmond-OKC. KGOU has zero
signal into Enid except very marginally with a little tropo help from
its 88.1 relay in Woodward, especially on west side of Enid, but too
close to a local translator on 88.3. KGOU 106.3 is totally blocked by
a local; its NE OKC relay KROU 105.7 could barely make it here if it
were not for another damn gospel huxter translator on 105.5. KUCO 90.1
is marginal direct, picket-fencing and not enough for $ tereo to break
thru on caradio, or to attain full quieting. It also has
better-than-translator relays in the small towns of Woodward and
McAlester, both useless here. I notified both stations of 94.3 now
being available in Enid, and one of them is looking into it.

January 21 circa 1930 UT on caradio I check out what remain on 94.3:
another gospel huxter marginally dominates, which must be per WTFDA
Database:

``KCVW 94.3 KINGMAN KS RELIGIOUS TEACHING BOTT RADIO NETWORK 100.0
100.0 253.0 253.0 37-46-26 97-30-52 1780 Bott Radio Network
Religious Talk``

134 km = 83 statute miles, city-to-city northward. There are three
other further and weaker Kansans. It also has some CCI which must be
an Okie, most likely:

``K232FI KSPI-780 94.3 STILLWATER OK ADULT ALTERNATIVE PETE 94.3 0.25
0.25 0.0 0.0 36-10-47 97-00-38 Focus on 90s/early 2000's
alternative``

-- i.e. the translator wagging the dog of 780 branding, even tho KSPI
has had its own full FM on 93.9/93.7 for many years but separately
identified and programmed. There is also a 12 kW in Elk City, KXOO,
Classic Rock, Kool 94.

Circa 1935 UT Jan 21, I drive right up to the KLGB transmitter site
just north of Poplar intersexion with N Van Buren = US 81; just in
case its exciter still be on: no, right next to the tower I am getting
CCI from the two other stations. Sign still says ``Home of KLGB
94.3``. Last owner was Covenant Life, a church elsewhere in Enid. It
was a pretty worthless station, long dispensed with any local
programming, plugged into some gospel rock satellite service; and
frequently failing with distortion or dead air.

FCC FM Query now gets no hit for KLGB. Even tho deleted, ought to
preserve data for historical purposes! (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** SPAIN. 9690, Fri Jan 21 at 2300, tokEnglish from REE, S9+20
excellent to N America, much weaker //s 12030 > 11940 >>
11685-not-11670. No contest today whether to hear this or Turkey, a
JBA carrier on 5960 from East Turkistan instead. Opening news by
Justin Coe about Spain`s stance on the Ukraine/Russia situation
distracts me as JC is pronouncing the Spanish Foreign Minister as if
``Alvárez`` instead of the common MexAmerican surname Álvarez accented
on first A. But uplooked later, he`s correct: ``Ministro de Asuntos
Exteriores, Unión Europea y Cooperación, José Manuel Albares, Desde el
12 de julio de 2021``.

2307 to Amy Egan`s first feature, the 85th anniversary of Spanish
National Radio, Jan. 19, 1937. Göbbels gave fascists in Spain a 20 kW
Telefunken transmitter in 1936 first installed in Salamanca, then
moved somewhere else, and finally to Madrid with Franco`s victory in
1939; but WTFK?? Features a song by a partisan altho Argentine-born.

2318 ID, another song, and another feature about the long-running
series on TVE, `Cuéntame` - or in English, Remember When? but said to
be equivalent to the American series `The Wonder Years`. It`s still
being renewed after 20 years. Stories of a fixional family thru the
years, set first in 1968y, thru the death of Franco in November 1975,
now reaching the 1990s (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 5960, Fri Jan 21 at 2300 & 2330 chex direct, JBA carrier,
so no contest whether to listen to English from VOT or from SPAIN
which is inbooming on 9690. As suspected, at 2333 check of UTwente, no
VOT at all, just Chinese from East Turkistan, std. remark (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2122 monitoring: pre-empted as
expected from 1915 on IRRS 7290 & 1323 this third Friday January 21;
see ITALY [and non]. Confirmed Fri Jan 21 when next scheduled, 2130 on
AM Italia only: unlike before 2000 as heard via nearby Noale SDR, 1323
is also clear of QRM so Romania is off by now? S9+10. No longer
chopped off air before ending, heard complete to 2159, with a slight
rippling SAH from algo. Not much ACI either. Not on 918 or 207.

Barely confirmed UT Saturday January 22 at 0230 on WRMI 9395: JBA
carrier direct = 9455 and 9955 only slightly better JBA. Remotes?
Nothing to Colombia but beamed NNW; does not reach Winnipeg; JBA S5-S7
to Knoxville; S6 noisy, and lessening to Missouri SDR. Next:

www.asiawaves.net of Alan Davies frequency database.
Scheduled Tibetan Amudo language.

According Google Earth images:
older image of 2005 year bcast center location was on
central downtown city, but poor vicinity visible, at
34 58 17 N 102 54 32 E

from 2012 onwards nice 2 x MW masts, and some 6 x SW dipol

broadcast center of 2012 year looks well build-up
and as usual with the Chinese looks very well
organized, outside city on the eastern mountain flank.
Two MW masts of 1197 and 1332 kHz 10 kW Tibetan and Chinese

In 2005 year on 3990 and 5978.984 kHz shortwave, 2 x 15 kW.

21-Febr and 14-March 2020 images show 3 bigger dipol
SW antenna masts on the northern flank, and
3 lower height dipol antennas on the southern flank, amongst
them deep angle fountain antenna, like corner reflector
to serve supply the very mountainous environment.

Glenn Hauser logs January 21, 2022  View Printable Version
Friday, January 21 2022

Logs
** CANADA. Some dashing ND beacons making it thru Jan 21 at 0803-0808
UT: 362 MCW kHz, SB, 500 watts at Greater Sudbury, Ont; 340 MCW kHz,
YY, 500 watts at Mont Joli, Québec; and 276 MCW kHz, YEL, 200 watts at
Elliot Lake, Ontario, to be decommissioned Jan 27! Just in time (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 5962-5995 & 6010-6048 approx., Jan 21 at 0715, splatter range
of jammers against nothing on 5980, 6030; worse than usual marring
5970 WEWN, almost 5995 Mali, etc. Something`s always wrong at the
incompetent DentroCuban Jamming Command (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. Jan 21 at 0717, all RHC frequencies are off: 5040, 6000,
6060, 6100, 9700. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** PALAU. 9965, Fri Jan 21 at 0800, I am unfortunately awake and find
something here with gospel rock song, S9+10, fades to S5. Got to be
T8WH or whatever its true callsign be now. EiBi shows:

9965 0805-0835 Mo-Tu USA Hope Radio 5 E FE /PLW
9965 0805-0850 We-Fr USA Hope Radio 5 E FE /PLW
9965 0810-1220 Su USA Hope Radio 5 E FE /PLW
9965 0840-0935 Sa USA Hope Radio 5 E FE /PLW

So it`s Palaw? Aoki shows a much more convoluted schedule attempting
to account for music breaks and individual program names, but not
before 0807, and as late as -1135 on Sundays. HFCC shows 9965
available 24 hours for ``HBN``, 100 kW at 345 degrees in English or
Mandarin (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 198 MCW kHz, Jan 21 at 0812 UT, ND beacon DIW, 2000 watts at
Dixon, North Carolina; take that, BBC Radio 4! with 600 kW. I never
detect Euro LW BC stations, and seldom any beacons this low. Axually
it`s sending DI W --- with a pause long enough for another letter to
be inserted! Out of order? Neither Hepburn nor RNA Signals List make
any note of this, something new? Dixon is an insignificant place with
zero population, south of Jaxonvil, not quite on the coast; not even
indexed in a standard atlas (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. Still noise peak circa 400 kHz, circa 0802 UT January 21,
but on outskirts do manage to detect what used to be common: 417 MCW,
ND beacon IY, 25 watts from Charles cItY, Iowa. Also:

347 MCW kHz, Jan 21 at 0806 UT, AFK, 25 watt NDB at Nebraska City NE
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2122 monitoring: confirmed first
airings, UT Friday January 21 at 0130 on WRMIs: 5850 VG direct; 0142
chex of 7780: JBA at UTwente! JBA also at Maine SDR; JBA S5 at
Maryland SDR; JBA S4 at Missouri SDR; BUT, S9/+15 into new Aguadas,
Colombia SDR, and BBB steps on closing before I finish at 0159. 7780
is supposedly on NE 44 degree azimuth, yet only decent signal is
picked up from the south! On wrong/changed antenna? Or just
propagation? WWV reported at 0000:

``Solar-terrestrial indices for 20 January follow.
Solar flux 99 and estimated planetary A-index 5.
The estimated planetary K-index at 0000 UTC on 21 January was 1.
Space weather for the past 24 hours has been moderate.
Solar radiation storms reaching the S1 level occurred.
Radio blackouts reaching the R2 level occurred.
No space weather storms are predicted for the next 24 hours.``

Next airing at 0330 UT Friday January 21 on WRMI 5985: tune in at 0328
via Colombia, usual IS & ID loop until ``top of hour`` BBB assures us,
S9+35! As it should be, aimed south. But cuts off the air at 0328.5!
Timer is still running but I think instead this SDR has failed, black
screen. Quickly check others by 0331: JBA carrier S5/S7 into
Knoxville; also JBAC at Maryland, and still nothing at Colombia. At
0357 I can hear me direct at S6-S9, so 5985 WRMI is on the air.

Also confirmed Friday January 21 at 1530 on WRMI 9955, S9+10/20 direct
and no jamming audible. Incomprehensibly screaming Tourette`s Syndrome
gospel huxter Terry Blalock cut off at 1529 for a brief music respite
and ID before WOR. What a lead-in. Next:

1915 UT Friday IRRS 7290-Bulgaria to WNW, 14580?; 918 and/or
1323-Italy & 207? [BUT: expected to be preëmpted on 3rd Friday!]

2130 UT Friday IRRS 918 and/or 1323-Italy & 207?
0230 UT Saturday WRMI 9395 to NNW
2030vUT Saturday WA0RCR 1860-AM
0030 UT Sunday WRMI 7730 to WNW
0400vUT Sunday WA0RCR 1860-AM [nominal 0415; as late as 0530]
1330 UT Sunday WMRI Europe via Ch 292 Germany 9670
2100 UT Sunday IRRS 918 and/or 1323-Italy & 207?
2330 UT Sunday WRMI 5950 to NNW
0030 UT Monday WRMI 7730 to WNW

Logs
** CANADA. My line noise peak around 400 kHz continues to block MCW
beacons, but propagation has improved enough to reaudiblize some Canux
on lower frequencies, Jan 20 at 0733: 346 dash and YXL, 500 watts from
Sioux Lookout, Ont; 335 dash and YLD, 1000 watts from Chapleau, Ont.;

** CUBA. 4747 & 4883 approx., Jan 20 at 0212, loud wideband scratchy
spurblobs out of 4765 R. Progreso, into Colombia SDR worse than heard
here before, but all cut off air at 0213* Something`s always wrong at
RadioCuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6060, Jan 20 at 0713, only RHC frequency left, the one with
humbuzz, S9/+10, English announcer pronounces it oh-MEE-kron,
apparently never having heard mainstream world media say the word,
always accented on first syllable, tho never agreeing on long or short
o. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 11760, Jan 20 at 1553, RHC #1 legacy frequency, S9/+10
distorted and breaking up; 9710 is also S9/+10 but just barely

** SPAIN. 11685, Jan 20 at 1554, open carrier and nothing on 11670;
can it be REE? Yes, starts earworm IS at 1555. The frequency for
Africa has been confusing, contradictory listings. Until now this B21

nonsensical at Noblejas (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2122)
