Glenn Hauser logs December 10-11, 2019  View Printable Version

Hauser
** ARGENTINA [non]. 5800, Dec 11 at 0110, RAE via WRMI Spanish about
Argentina with porteño accent; there was big news there today but
seemingly not about that right now. Fair signal here but never very
good aimed south, but more than the JBA carrier. See also USA [and
non] WRMI (Glenn Hauser, oK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 13632 & 13768, Dec 10 at 1509, spurblobs from RHC 13700 which
is S9+10 with music; 68 kHz above and below, and much weaker
second-order+plus circa 13836, S4, better detectable in FM than AM.
Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)

** CUBA. 15700, Dec 10 at 1514, CRI Plus relay is S9+20 of dead air;
something`s always wrong at RadioCuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)

** CUBA. 6060, Dec 10 at 2353, RHC Spanish on earlier than before; it
was not on at previous check 2328. Anyhow, WRMI is already on 5800
contrary to own skedgrid (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 6145, Dec 11 at 0314, RHC is S9+20 of dead air in English;
while // 6000 is same at S9+30. These are supposedly two different
sites so problem must be upstream like in the STLs, studio output.
Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)

** CUBA. Last time I computed the possible leapfrog mixing products of
the Bauta RHC frequencies on 49m. This time, where could land the
Quivicanes/Titanes, i.e. 6000 RHC with CRI relay first on 6180 at
0100-0300, then 5910 at 0300-0500:
6000 & 6180: 6360 and 5820
6000 & 5910: 6090 and 5820
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GREECE. 9420, Dec 10 at 2020, VOG music and talk are S9+10 but
unusually overmodulated, distorted. Don`t station operators monitor
how their own signal sounds off the air? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

** MADAGASCAR. 5009.923V, Dec 11 at 0248, music weak off-frequency
after WRMI 5010 0200*, no doubt RNM signature. Is also slightly
unstable, wavering. Now if we could pinpoint the LAH to WRMI after
2300 when RNM is not expected to be on (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)

** MALI. 15125, Dec 10 at 1731, S7 to S9+10 echoey Swahili, the SSOB
except for 15140 Cuba; I bet it`s CRI via Bamako: Yes, as scheduled
this hour, 100 kW eastward. Figured there would be a // on 13 MHz, but
none found; later found listed at 13645 per EiBi (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

** PERU. 5980, Dec 10 at 2303 and 2328, JBA carrier from Radio Chaski
under wall-of-noise Cuban jamming against nothing else; and retune at
2354 to catch the timer cutoff at 2354:59*, which is 8 seconds earlier
than last check 4 nights ago December 6 until 2355:07* = averaging 2.0
seconds slippage earlier per (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** RUSSIA. 6020-6025-6030, Dec 10 at 0752, DRM noise, whence? HFCC
shows Voice of Russia at 0600-1000, 100 kW, 34 degrees from K/A =
Komsomol`sk/Amure in DVR, at that azimuth onward to N America. First
time I have noticed any of these new DRM tests(?) from Russia,
supposedly domestic programming not revived external VOR. Tho I have
not sought them out deliberately. Aoki/NDXC instead designates this as
GRFC with music, not only at 06-10 but also at 20-22 & 01-06 daily.
Komsomol`sk sunset was 0648, so only now is it getting into nighttime
there. The earlier broadcasts would be in local daytime intended for
domestic coverage. (Romania also emits DRM around 6025 at 1700-1757)
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SAO TOME. 13590, Dec 10 at 2000, tune-in to open carrier and soon
off* - AGM is scheduled 1900-2000 in English, a.k.a. VOA (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SAUDI ARABIA. 11820.043, Dec 10 at 2025, Qur`an JBA from SBC,
signature off-frequency. First time audible at all in a week or more;
was off or just not propagating? Still not enough for lullaby
listening; and our alternative Greece is distorted, q.v. (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SPAIN. 12030, Dec 10 at 2006, REE is S7-S9 of dead air; stronger
than 11940 also DA; and at 2009, S7-S9 of DA on 9690. Recheck 2301,
all three are *still* in dead air, and 11685 also detectable JBA
carrier. Something`s very wrong at REE. Could the powers that be not
know the Noblejas transmitters are running for hours with no
modulation?

Mike Bott also reported to the WOR iog yesterday Dec 9 at 2216 UT:
``REE 9690 --- Sounds like some technical issue occurring at REE this
evening. Nothing but static being transmitted peaking at S9+10 here in
central Ohio. Seems to be the same issue heard 2 days ago. Verified on
multiple Kiwis and Utwente. -- Mike`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)

** U S A. 5950, Dec 10 at 0753, S9+10/20 of dead air from this WRMI-5,
again, during SMTV block. RAE in Japanese is supposed to start at 0800
weekdays; unknown whether it came to life by then. But at best 5950 is
undermodulated, and 285 degree beam is far off targeting Japan (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [and non]. 5800, Dec 10 at 2303, WRMI is S9 but
undermodulated in Spanish, 2328 music, presumably SMTV and not on 6060
per misleading skedgrid. Could be on 6060 as RHC is not up yet, rather
a JBA carrier from Zahedan or Chengdu. RHC expected before 0000, and
in fact already going at next check 2353. See also ARGENTINA [non].
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. Strange things are happening around here on 87.7-88.0
MHz; extremely intermittent big carrier, some with tones, enough to
QRM reception of 88.1 KWOU on home radios, like around 1445 UT Dec 10.
These I suspect are from malfunxioning K202BY Family Radio Enid
satellator, which has not been on 88.3 even with a dead carrier for
months now.

87.7 or 87.9, on caradio along west Garriott in Enid around midday Dec
10, such as 1827 UT, gospel/country music for a few minutes. Maybe
winter sporadic E from a Franken FM circa channel 6 analog audio
frequency? Maybe a local Xmas display, but stayed too long likely to
come from another car`s RF feeder. Earlier had a split-second like a
meteor burst, a Geminid? That shower peaks Dec 13-14 (Glenn Hauser,
OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Hauser
** ALGERIA [and non]. 531, Dec 10 at 0332, Jil-FM quite separable from
weak 530 signals, and some talk modulation, presumably ``Algerian
Arabic`` as in WRTH which also shows F`kirina is location, 600 kW, 24
hours, and BTW this is in AM, not FM! Could this be the grandest AM
station in the world which has lost its identity to FM? 30X the power
of WSB. Weaker het tho same power on 549 I can`t separate so well from
550s; BTW, nothing much on 576 which was an Algerian sensation a
couple weeks ago; is it off again? Usual set of other JBA TA MW
carriers at least on bottom half of band, I relent and don`t enumerate
this time, but also note some music on 774 at 0334 from the RNE1 Spain
synchros (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. 11150, 10870, 10845 JBA carriers, stronger 10820 in Chinese,
Dec 10 at 0022, presumed all CNR1 jammers against SOH. More WOOB ones
not found higher or lower (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. 11885 // 11790, Dec 10 at 0015, CRI English good on both:
Xian 500 kW at 200 and 190 degrees respectively.

11820, Dec 10 at 0016, CRI in Cantonese, good at same parameters as
11885.

11770, Dec 10 at 0016, CRI in Vietnamese, resembling 11820 Yue, this
one 500 kW, 193 degrees from Beijing site (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 5040, Dec 10 at 0028, RHC English is distorted and squealing;
and no parallel alternative at this hour. Something`s always wrong at
RHC.

BTW, to mark Human Rights Day, Dec 10, RHC English has mailed out a
quotation from Fidel Castro Ruz, huge violator of human rights as
multi-sesquidecade Commie dictator (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)

** CUBA [and non]. 6000, Dec 10 at 0353, RHC English JBM/suptorted,
while only // 6145 is merely undermodulated; also with splash from
6150 Romania in Spanish with full schedule about to sign-off; yet its
signal is hardly stronger. Somethings always wrong at RHC.

Aoki shows 6000 is Quivicán site; 6060, 6100 and 6165 [sic: still
haven`t QSYed it to 6145!] all Bauta site. So the possible Bauta
leapfrog mixing product spots would now be:

From 6060 & 6100: 6020 and 6120
From 6060 & 6145: 5975 and 6230
From 6100 & 6145: 6055 and 6190
But I haven`t heard any of these lately; are they being
suppressed/filtered better now, or one of the fundamentals too weak?
You might hear Spanish and/or English, depending (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

** KOREA SOUTH. 9105, Dec 9 at 2025, JBA carrier from presumed Echo of
Hope. Ron Howard agrees and provides all the other landings this week,
the lower ones mostly audible in our mornings: ``Today (Dec 9): 3985
// 4890 // 6000 // 6255 // 6355 // 9105`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

** MALI. 13630, Dec 9 at 2021, W&M drama in rather slow English,
S9-S7. What`s this? CRI via Bamako as scheduled eastward, but not
noticed here lately and suspect it`s sporadically active (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 475.1 kHz, Dec 10 at 0319-0328 UT, very slow CW beacon, JBA
but as previously reported it is indeed the one Dave Frantz runs at
WWRB, Manchester TN. The message roughly twice a minute is: WWW WA4SZE
COM WA4SZE/BEACON K. Not sure what the COM mean amid. And WWW, not
VVV?

Here`s an interesting discussion about this from 2+ years ago:
https://www.eham.net/forum/view?id=topic=117878.0

I wonder if this beacon be recently reactivated? Can`t say I pay much
attention to ``630 meters``, but ran across this on the way to or from
the NDB band (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 15730, Dec 9 at 2019, VOA Grimesland in French with big
short/long path echo. See my Sept 16 log where I explained how this
worx and calculated the delay as one-eighth of a second (Glenn Hauser,
OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2011 monitoring: confirmed Monday
December 9 from 1900:36 on IRRS, 7290, as monitored via UTwente SDR;
now WOR starts at the beginning, preceded by: 1858 tune-in big OC
already on; 1859:27 cut on modulation with Aïda theme joined in
progress, very brief IRRS sign-on announcement; 1900:05 FSN news
headlines: eruption in NZ, Russia banned for doping, UK supermarket
sold in China, taking only 31 seconds before WOR. After a bit of
music, 1930 FSN same stories in more detail; 1933 FSN Spotlight about
WTO vs Trump; 1935 pause and music; 1951 recheck DJ talking about
`Sounds Irish`. Alexander Busneag says all Romanian SW transmitters
are back in service, but this still sounds the same bigsig as before.

Also confirmed UT Tue Dec 10 at 0100 on WRMI 7780, VP S9 which = the
noise level when tuned to open 7770 etc. But good clear signal at 0107
when checked via UTwente where it`s aimed. Hello to all our 1/2/3 am
listeners in Europe. Next:

2200 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW
0100 UT Thursday WRMI 7780 to NE

Full schedule including AM, FM, webcasts, satellite, podcasts:
http://www.worldofradio.com/radioskd.html
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5800, Dec 10 at 0026, no signal from WRMI, which a week ago
moved here once RHC reclaimed 6060 where nothing but RHC is audible.
By 0157, maybe JBA carrier on 5800, while 5850 and 5950 are nominally
very good and poor-fair. Skedgrid now shows XMTR 3 on 5800 at 00-01
SMTV, 01-02 RAE Spanish (but what about weekends?), while at the
bottom inserts old 6060 as if still in use for SMTV at 2100-2400
before RHC cuts on.

Say, if this be the new reality and you still want to honor RAE by
reviving its legacy frequency 6060, why not move their hour to 2300
UT, which is prime time in Argentina, anyway? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 13845, Dec 9 at 2023, no signal from WWCR-3. Since 15825 is
audible poorly and 12160 fairly, I conclude 13845 must be off the air
amid its very long 13-01 UT span (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)

** U S A. 560 [non]. Replying to my query about Roman-numeral
frequency calls other than KLVI Beaumont: Carl Dabelstein: ``At one
time, the station in Phoenix on 1400 had the call KXIV.``

Rick Dau: ``Glenn, at least one other example comes to my mind
immediately -- WXVI-1600 in Montgomery, Alabama. The "XVI" portion, of
course, is the Roman numeral for "16", an affectionate reference to
WXVI's position on the AM dial. This is a station for which I have a
soft spot -- it was the very first to which I ever sent a reception
report. On February 13, 1988, while I was a student at the University
of Iowa (in what would turn out to be my final semester there), I did
a report on WXVI, which was airing Alabama State University men's
basketball that evening and identifying as "Sunshine 16". Being
somewhat new to serious DXing (my Iowa City AM logbook was just a
month old at that point and NRC member and Iowa City resident Earl
Higgins was still helping me get my feet wet), I was rather naive
about reporting pertinent (and verifiable) details of their
programming. In fact, my letter to them simply stated that I had heard
their broadcast of ASU basketball and IDs as "Sunshine 16", but it
included nothing solid, like local ads. As you can imagine, I did not
get a QSL for the report, but WXVI was at least kind enough to send me
a "Sunshine 16" bumpersticker. Fortunately, my 2nd report mailed, this
one for a reception of WOWO-1190 two weeks later, DID include mentions
of commercials, and I did get a nice QSL card in early March signed by
then-CE Eric Culp for QSL #1. 73, Rick Dau, South Omaha, Nebraska``

Well, well, I also got an earlier QSL when it was WAPX; call changed
to WXVI in the mid-1970s (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

This report dispatched at 0628 UT December 10

** CHINA. Survey of CNR1 jammers, some only carriers on known
frequencies vs SOH, Dec 8 at 2318: 9180, 9215, stronger 9230.

At 2325, 9970, 10160; at 2328, 10820, 11070, 11000, 11120, 11170,
stronger 11440 & 11460.

At 2335, 7540 good with flutter, echo; this one vs RFA Tibetan via
Kuwait this hour only, unheard.

9900, Dec 8 at 2324, Firedragon music jamming mixing with something in
Chinese, this one against RTI (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 5025, Dec 8 at 2309, R. Rebelde modulation during music is
cutting off and on, S9+25/30. Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 6145, Dec 9 at 0712, new? announcer at RHC concluding,
Charles McKeely(?), then 0713-0722 `DXers Unlimited` Arnie mumbling
something about no sunspots; 0722 opening `Mailbag`. Something`s
always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTEING DIGEST

** CUBA [and non]. 13700, Dec 9 at 1500, RHC much weaker than usual
here, S8-S9, vs much stronger OC on 13740 just before it turns off.
13700 is also too weak to produce any spurs, tsk2. Something`s always
wrong at RHC. 13700 eclipsed by 13710 Sa`udi Qur`aning at S9/+10,
normally much weaker by comparison (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)

** KOREA SOUTH. 9105, Dec 9 at 0708, JBA with flutter, presumed Echo
of Hope on this week`s jumparound frequency, nothing on 9100 or 9095.
Aoki of today agrees 9105 at 0600-0200. As of Dec 7 at 1128, Wolfgang
Bueschel remotely had this on 9099.993; the rest unresurveyed yet
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2011 monitoring: confirmed Sunday
December 8 at 2130 on WRMI 7780, poor-fair S7-S9.

Also confirmed UT Monday December 9 at 0130 on WRMI 7780, fair S9-S8
but fading down/out by 0140.

Also confirmed UT Mon Dec 9 at 0230 on WRMI 7780, improved to better
S8-S9, and this time // 9395 is worse at only S4-S6, lowered MUF
tr*mping azimuth.

Also confirmed UT Mon Dec 9 from 0400 on Area 51 webcast; by 0429
check, closing via WBCQ 5130v is good S9+10.

Also confirmed UT Mon Dec 9 at 0430 on WRMI 9955, good S9/+10 with no
jamming. Next:

1900vUT Monday IRRS 7290 Romania? to WNW
0100 UT Tuesday WRMI 7780 to NE
2200 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW
0100 UT Thursday WRMI 7780 to NE

Full schedule including AM, FM, webcasts, satellite, podcasts:
http://www.worldofradio.com/radioskd.html
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 7490+, Sunday Dec 8 at 2314, WBCQ amid `Uncle Bill`s Melting
Pot` seems to be in a comedy routine, so not always music, promoted as
being Hawaiian this week. Poor reception. At 2335 & still 2355 rechex,
I notice that 7490 is in dead air! The 2330-2400 segment on Sundays
has long been an orphan slot, without even an entry on the schedule as
``available time slot``; but usually filled with music from
somesource. Would be nice if UBMP could occupy a full hour.

BTW, while checking UBMP at 2316, RF noise burst from my nearest
streetlight igniting right at local sunset, earliest of the year, but
would be a few minutes later were it not cloudy (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 475 kHz, Dec 9 at 0715 UT, continuous weak CW as I am
dozing off; did not notice any DE definite ID, but could be this as
logged 11 months ago: ``U S A. 475 kHz, Jan 13 at 0701, WA4SZE/BEACON
on CW from Dave Frantz, of WWRB, Manchester TN`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 5010-, Dec 8 at 2308, again unexplained LAH on the minus
side of WRMI; see yesterday`s speculation (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 13624.74 approx., Dec 9 at 1458, 2-way in Spanish
INTRUDERS (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
