Glenn Hauser logs February 11-12, 2022  View Printable Version
Saturday, February 12 2022

Logs
** AZORES. 6114, Feb 11 at 0652, RTTY INTRUDER is back, S9/+10 vs JBA
6115 carrier from Japan. Believed to be USN Azores (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** CUBA. 6060, Feb 11 at 0653, RHC English, S9+10/20 including big
humbuzz. Something`s always wrong at RHC. Others are clear: 6000 VG
S9+20/30; at 0658, 9700 VG S9+30/40 and 5040 S9+20/30. Some of these
probably about to quit circa 0700 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 515 MCW kHz, Feb 11 at 0702 UT, PN, 25-watt NDB at Ponca
City, is off again (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** SPAIN. 9690, Friday Feb 11 at 2259, NO signal from REE! N American
frequency is off. Something`s always nonsensical at Noblejas. I`ve
cleared a semihour to listen to Spain and/or Turkey English at 2300;
running two remotes at the computer. Maryland for Spain, which soon
finds the other three frequencies active: 11685 weakish with usual
RTTY QRM, but 11940 for S America VG S9+10/20 and 12030 Mideast, VG
S9+10/15 like a local, so I keep on it! Almost as if knowing that the
NAm transmitter is down, REE redirected the 12030 toward us, or at
least bidirexional. But even under normal circumstances it`s good for
us off the back, often better than 9690 depending on OWF and time of
day. So I`m mostly listening to VOTurkey at same time, q.v., via
UTwente. On headphones, one of them panned for some separation. Both
start with news of course and you can guess the prime topix now. At
2311, REE into an Amy Egan feature about the Eurovision Song Contest
this year, May in Torino, but Spain already picked its entry; and
about previous years. Sounds like they are all hard-rock, yuk. 2324
it`s over and Justin Coe read my mind, after all that pop-rock, time
for a respite of some 200-year-old-music, a Lied from Schubert`s
Winterreise about Frühling, danke! (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY [and non]. 5960, Feb 11 at 2300, VOT English is on today
with VG signal into UTwente and modulation, only a hint of squeal.
I`ve cleared a semihour to listen to Spain and/or Turkey, almost the
only Europeanish SW services in English to N America at this hour.
(There is Romania also but officially not for us beyond W Europe, yet
putting a VG signal into Maryland on 7220, unlike the other 3 either
off or aimed away.) So I`m mostly listening to Spain at same time,
q.v. On headphones, one of them panned for some separation. Both start
with news of course and you can guess the prime topix now. At 2315,
`Weekly Analysis`, by some professor, Turkey`s policy on the Ukraine
crisis; Tatars, the related Turkic people in Crimea, are a significant
factor. 2329, `Feeling Supreme`, on ``natural cures for cracking hands
due to cold; eczema``. Now especially during pauses the CCCCCCI is
obvious underneath from East Turkistan, standard denunciation (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 6125, Feb 11 at 0430, VOT English is on, S9/+10 into
Maryland, modulation OK, no squeal; 0433 a talk about augmented
reality. At 0358 direct I feared it would be late or missing, no
interval signal yet (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2125 monitoring: confirmed UT
Friday February 11 at 0330 on WRMI 5985, S6-S9 into St Lucia SDR after
usual IS/ID loop until ``top of the hour`` [sic]. S9/+10 into Missouri
SDR but noisy with bleed from 5980 jamming.

Also confirmed Friday February 11 at 1530 on WRMI 9955, S8/S9 direct
but seems undermodulated compared to e.g. blasting/ed 9980 WWCR.

Also confirmed Friday February 11 from 1915.5 on IRRS 7290 via
Bulgaria, VG into UTwente; and not quite synchronized on IRRS via AM
Italia 1323 kHz. Previously tuned in both before 1900: 7290 from *1859
carrier, as always no modulation until JIP Feature Story News just
before 1901. 1323 is already in FSN but rapid SAH and CCI from Romania
in domestic German. But AM Italia has some breaks in transmission or
modulation, before WOR at 1902-1903, 1911-1912, and JIP late at 1916;
now the German QRM is severe. I can`t bear to listen any further, but
at least 7290 has been running without breaks. Note: the Fri 1915
airings to be pre-empted next week Feb 18.

Also confirmed Fri Feb 11 at 2154 the 2130 on AM Italia only, 1323
kHz. Now there is no QRM, good S9+10 steady signal into nearby Noale
SDR. But at 2156 WOR signal drops down abruptly into noise level but
is still barely audible; back up in less than a minute, so still
transmission problems at AM Italia [or maybe the SDR?]. WOR plays to
completion, IRRS ID, 2200 Feature Story News, 2205 UN News, 2209 still
on, into music; off sometime before next check 2227. Next:

contribution via PayPal to woradio at yahoo.com not necessarily US$

One may also contribute by MO or check in US$ on a US bank to:
Glenn Hauser, P O Box 1684, Enid OK 73702, USA (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** U S A. 5850, Feb 11 at 0347, this WRMI-12 is OFF; all others seem
on as usual; 0655 recheck, 5850 back on with TOMBS (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** U S A. (6160v), UT Saturday Feb 12 from 0100, WBCQ webcast of
`AAAWWW`, says it`s live from Fla studio. First denounces horrible
cable TV people for being dishonest; why doesn`t everybody stream
their entertainment like A&A, from Netflix, etc.?

Transmitter site in Maine is buried after 3 snowstorms of 12-20 inches
each, piled up to 3-4 feet or more than a sesquimeter. Could be even
worse in March. They support the trucker protesters in Ottawa and
elsewhere. Criticizes Putin over Ukraine: this is not the 1920s or the
1820s; also Moslems, not the 820s. Wars are outmoded. Against ``the
cult of the mask``.

0121, trimulcasting on 7490, 6160, 4790. New 4790 service starting
March 1 will be called ``Radio Angela`` following Uncle Bill`s tests
in February. Will be a ``premier`` service with new music, great
alternative programming, 4h per night starting at 7 or 8 pm Eastern.
Mostly music, some radio theater. Example week 3 of the tests,
detailed night by night, but UB has not sent those to us. Will include
some from WHVW and WXNZ. This will NOT BE STREAMED. You will have to
listen on a SW radio or OK via a remote SDR. 4790 has excellent
TimTron audio and is being improved even more. Only religious content
allowed on it will be music.

``Gotta get Glenn Hauser`s WORLD OF RADIO on the lineup, the only real
DX show left``, says Allan.

0137 call from Cracker, trucker protests spreading, anti-vax, Allan
agrees. 0146, a 5-minute podcast lexure by someone, ``A brief history
of slavery`` --- it`s existed thru human history, was not started by
whites, but ended by whites, so don`t blame them.

A&A going to Ham-Cation in Orlando this weekend, Allan in a safari
hat. 0156 Email, someone`s birthday. Elon going to moon to dispose of
spent Tesla batteries? And several more, no Free Radio Weekly tho it
was promptly published almost two hours ago. 0159 prayer; 0200 this
stream goes to some blah-blah-blah screamer. At the computer I did not
check the SW frequencies at all this time, remotedly or directedly
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 5910, Friday Feb 11 at *1730-1800.7*, open carrier dead
air except for some hum, equally good into UTwente at S9/+15 and into
Kuwait SDR at S8-S9. Checking out the mystery in WRTH Updater which
says new unknown clandestine in Farsi for Iran, Fridays only, site
unknown too. At 1747 a trace of modulation, but maybe cross- or QRM.
1748 two brief noise bursts could be QRM or failed attempt to make a
connexion. Did not even try TDOA since no modulation for delay timing.
Evitable ACI from weak 5915 probably Zambia, and continuous CW on 5916
which EiBi lists as RCV, Russian Navy. I reminded the WOR iog of this
an hour earlier; Hansjoerg Biener and Zacharias Liangas report the
same results on 5910. Shortly Wolfgang Büschel replied:

``MOLDOVA 5910 / 5909.999 kHz ONLY CARRIER total empty channel from
late CRASH start 1730:51 UT, to TX-OFF switch at 1800:37, some 100 /
200 / 300 Hertz apart distance strings on both sidebands.

Kiwi-server TdOA function showed signal origin of
Radioteletsentr (PRTC) transmitter Grigoriopol Maiac
in Russian speaking community Pridnestrovie oblast.

S=9+5dB or -69dBm signal in Kuwait Kiwi remotedly,
S=9+10dB or -64dBm in western Europe and Athens Greece Kiwi_sets.
73 wb df5sx``

I wonder how precise and definite that TDOA was? Ivo Ivanov, Bulgaria
shortly responded elsewise: ``Tx hum is same as of RRTM Telecom
Tashkent [UZBEKISTAN] previous day at same time but on 5925 kHz for
Sae Nala`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Logs
** KIRITIMATI. 846 kHz, Feb 10 at 0701, JBA carrier, surely R.
Kiribati; while no trans-Atlantic signals are making it. A few nights
ago, 846 was stronger than usual, but never able to pull any audio
from it. Tnx to Gary DeBock, here`s what it would be like:

``846-Kiribati has a very early fade in (around 0500 UTC in the Oregon
coast), and signs off around 1015 UTC. Here's its typical format, with
the standard female announcer speaking from 1:30 to 1:58 in another
recording from last month``

First broadcasts confirmed UT Friday February 11 at 0130 on WRMIs:
5850 VG S9+10/20 direct; 7780 F S9/+10 direct but sounds much weaker
by comparison. 7780 good S8-S9 into UTwente as aimed (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 11555-USB, Feb 10 at 1553, VP 2-way in Spanish Intruders
if you consider 25mb SWBC starting at defacto 11500 (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 17850, Feb 10 at 1546, big open carrier turned off in a
few seconds before I could measure it. Nothing comparable among few
week known signals on 16 mb. Most likely it`s VOA Grimesland NC
testing prior to scheduled service on quite different frequency, 17655
from 1700 or 17700 from 1900 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNSOLICITED TESTIMONIAL

``Just a short word. I started listening to SW radio when in high
school back around 1980 when I was 14-15 and listened to you regularly
for several years. Thank you! The information you provided was
absolutely fascinating at a time when world communications really were
at the heart of understanding the world.

I am glad to find that you are still doing the program. Thank you for
what you do. I am planning to get into Ham radio this year, taking the
ARRL exam and going from there.

All the best to you, Dan Golembeski (Michigan)``
