Glenn Hauser logs February 19-20, 2022  View Printable Version
Sunday, February 20 2022

Logs
** CUBA. 7355 & 6030 & 5980, Feb 20 at 0723, wall-of-noise jamming,
and slightly lighter pulse jamming on 7375, 7435, all Radio Martí
frequencies which are OFF the air at this hour. Something`s always
wrong at the incompetent DentroCuban Jamming Command. Think how many
undernourished Cubans could have been fed nutritious meals for the
juicy cost of all this pointless noise! (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 9700, Sun Feb 20 at 0728, RHC English S9+10, still on here
only, no 49 or 59 m, opening `Jazz Place`. Something`s always wrong at
RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** GREECE [and non]. 9420, Feb 20 at 0725, NO signal from V of Greece,
at a Sunday time usually occupied by Greek Orthodox music. Later on
Sundays into UT Mondays, it`s always on a break. Hope this does not
portend earlier abolition of SW than projected March 31. I have a
totally unconfirmed report that Feb 23 would be the last day.
Propagation from Europe is certainly funxional: 9645 at 0725 Feb 20,
Sunday-only Ukrainian liturgy from SMG Vatican RCC (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** SOUTH CAROLINA [non]. 9400, Feb 20 at 0730, music matching 5890,
i.e. the TOMBS cult via BULGARIA as scheduled, and WWCR (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** U S A. 13565 CW, Feb 20 at 1451, HIFER beacon K6FRC with JBA IDs
over and over, listed as 1.8 milliwatts at Patterson CA; vs CODAR
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 14280 USB, Feb 19 at 1951, W4A, special event ham station
celebrating 80th anniversary of VOA. By 1952 has switched to a
different operator`s voice, Dave. Making very quick contacts one after
another, QRZ. Says he is 25 miles west from VOA Greenville
[Grimesland] site, running 400 watts. Contacts include K9MOI, NP4AC;
his signal much better than most of them, especially at 1954 KB9WOO
with 9 watts. Mostly rate ``5,9, eastern North Carolina``.

There are two other special eventers, stacked as V/O/A. Details at
https://w4amc.com/2022/01/07/80th-anniversary-of-voa/
W4V at HQ in Washington, W8O at Bethany, Ohio. According to
https://dxheat.com/dxc/
those two are currently working on 14300 and 14286 respectively.

At 2055 I hear on 14300, W7KPH in Las Vegas NV but seems about some
net rather than working W4V. Activity span is 14-22 UT both today and
tomorrow Feb 20, so maybe will catch them then. Also on 40 & 80 m I
haven`t heard, circa 7280 & 3880 LSBs.

dxheat also registers W7Y on 14247 for the WGY centennial, but I
haven`t heard it.

However, I also run across a surprise special on 14277 USB at 2058 Feb
19: W7P calling CQ from Lowell Observatory, Flagstaff AZ, with no
immediate response. For the 92nd anniversary of discovery of Pluto by
Clyde Tombaugh:

https://forums.qrz.com/index.php?threads/w7p-pluto-special-event-is-on-the-air-from-lowell-observatory.800941/
BTW I attended some events at NMSU Las Cruces with Mr Tombaugh,
emeritus.

Chex the next morning Feb 20: at 1457, on 14300-USB some other net. At
1458, 14280-USB mentions VOA, but next station heard is Gerson in
Alexandria, Virginia; and at 1500 K4US, special event from Mt Vernon
celebrating Washington`s birthday; which is not really today:
https://www.qrz.com/lookup/k4us
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2126 monitoring: confirmed Sat Feb 19 at 2053
about 23 minutes into the 2030 on WA0RCR, 1860 AM, S9+10 into nearby
KB0FX SDR.

Also confirmed UT Sunday February 20 at 0030 on WRMI 7730, S9+15 into
Knoxville SDR and VG direct.

Also confirmed UT Sunday February 20 at 0441 about one minute into so
started circa 0440 on WA0RCR, 1860 AM, S9+10 into nearby KB0FX SDR.

Once again slept thru the Sun 1330 on WMRI Europe via Channel 292 on
9670; anyone hear it? Next:

2100 UT Sunday IRRS 1323-Italy
2330 UT Sunday WRMI 5950 to NNW
0030 UT Monday WRMI 7730 to WNW
0400vUT Monday WBCQ 6160v Area 51 to WSW

2200 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW

Glenn Hauser, PO Box 1684, Enid OK 73702, USA (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 5950, UT Sun Feb 20 at 0029 tune-in for `Postcard Panorama`
on WRMI scheduled weekly at 0030-0045 --- instead, some guy with an
accent is talking about logging beacons past 0031, some music; 0038
Radio Igloo address, music; 0044 about software for MW DXing, Radio
Igloo ID, music. Igloo is this week`s guest pirate on Texas Radio
Shortwave [not Texas Shortwave Radio as on WRMI grid] as publicized
for 0000-0100 UT Sunday. As I wrote to Tammy Walker,

``I enjoyed your show which I heard the first week of January and
repeated on the second, so I assumed it would be repeated further
until a new one in February, and had not retuned, until tonight, when
I find it gone from 5950 at 0030 UT Sunday, and also gone from the
WRMI program schedule; but it is still mentioned on the programming
page and on your website. So what happened? Hope you will be back.
Best wishes, Glenn Hauser``. No reply yet (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. (5085), UT Sun Feb 20 around 0115 tune-in, `TOUTA` already
playing in $ tereo on WTWW-2 webcast. Since I`ve already missed a
quarter of simultaneous `Encore` classical music, I`ll make a point of
catching its repeat 26 hours later. At 0148, Bob Heil says, ``here we
are at the top of the hour`` [huh?], so starts to ``button up``, but a
little more music until 0152.7 ID and back to rock (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** VANUATU. 5040, Feb 20 at 0729, JBA carrier presumed R. Vanuatu.
Just a few minutes earlier, RHC Spanish was still going on 5040. No
signal now on 7260. Others were hearing RV reactivated there but off
circa 0600 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Atlantic JBA MW carrier search, Feb 20 at
0352-0356: 531, 585, 684, 774-2, 855-2, 909, 1107-2, 1125?, 1215, 1296
kHz. A long time since I last heard 531, surely the 600 kW ALGERIA,
tho there are also listed some low powers in Spain, asking to be
swamped? Most of the others likely Spain, UK, altho checking now 3+
hours earlier than bedtime should get better results. Has RTA 531 been
off air or limited sked? WRTH 2022 shows both 531 and 600/300 kW 891
kHz are 24 hours, but I`m still not ever hearing 891 which used to
give WLS a het for its Hertz (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

``That is or was the home of these iHeart stations absenteely owned
and licensed to OKC: KTOK 1000, KREF 94.7, KXXY 96.1, 98.5 xltr, KTST
101.9, KJYO 102.7. Per FCC Queries. IHM also has a Tulsa cluster and a
few other OK stations outside the OKC market. So what is going on
here. iHeart pulling out of OKC or just moving to another
building?Glenn Hauser, Enid``

Adam Rivers replied: ``Many iHeart facilities have downsized over the
last year or so. Mine has not, but buildings have merged, etc. like
Lancaster into Harrisburg, PA, etc.``

On Feb 18, John Zondlo replied: ``The auction conducted Thursday
was of property at our old 50 Penn Place offices. We have only brought
over to our new location a handful of items. Honestly, much of that
stuff has seen its better days, and I'm not sure why some folks even
bothered to bid on it.

At 50 Penn, our home for 44 years, we occupied about half of the 10th
floor of this office building. The 10th floor was occupied by sales
and management. We also had the entire 11th floor, occupied by
programming, for our 7 stations here. We also occupied a portion of
the 12th floor for the Oklahoma News Network, 4 farm networks, and the
Oklahoma Baptist University sports network (which I produce). With all
of the cuts made by iHeart/Clear Channel in recent years, we had way
too much space for too few people.

Our new digs are at 6525 N. Meridian in OKC in a 6 story office tower
(recently renovated, barely occupied). We have 4,000 square feet now,
a fraction of what we had at 50 Penn. The broadcast and office
equipment is, for the most part, brand spanking new.

There is still quite a bit of broadcast equipment left at 50 Penn that
is being inventoried and will be disposed of in various ways.

So, to sum it up, we are still alive and well in OKC and serving our
area to the best of ability with a skeleton crew. And I say that as
I'm here at KGHM 1340 producing a LOCAL high school basketball game.
John Zondlo - Yukon, OK``

Thanks, John. He is/was better(?) known as an FM DX editor for VHF-UHF
Digest of the Worldwide TV-FM DX Association; who refuses to publish
my few but detailed FM DX logs since they would occupy more than one
line each. Yes, KGHM 1340 is another IHM station I overlooked, since
it is licensed to suburb Midwest City for no particular reason. Did I
miss another? To total magic 7 would have to include that one
translator (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 91.7, KOSU, Sat Feb 19 at 1830 UT, I am listening on
caradio on way to and from Box 1684, with a very interesting show
about the origins of tape recording in Nazi Germany, and later into
Vietnam war archive interviews; next week to be about how ``cassette
tapes created the Internet``. Closed at 1859 UT without any program
ID. Must have been `Radiolab` as per KOSU sked. All I want to do is
find a recording/podcast of this week`s complete show since I heard
only some fragments. But program website
https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/radiolab
is completely unhelpful, not even a search funxion: all kinds of stuff
in segments for years, and some seem on related topix, but I give up!
One thing I noticed that in SFX of tuning an AM radio in Britain
overnight after BBC signed off, hearing classical music on strong
German stations: did Hitler make the musicians play all night? we hear
squishy noises and RTTY! Better not be on AM!! Or a horrible radio
picking up SW images. How could Radio people be so ignorant about the
basix? But such nonsense is standard for tuning-around SFX (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)
