Glenn Hauser logs March 18-19, 2025 |
|
Thursday, March 20 2025
** CANADA. 1650 kHz, March 19 at 0647 UT, South Asian music. NRC AM Log shows of the 8 North Americans on 1650, it has to be CINA, Mississauga [Toronto], Ontario, U1 5000/680 watts, ``Seena Radio``. Maybe new for me. Normally hear IA/CO/TX stations, not so much OK, ``AR`` Fort Smith.
It should be noted that another Toronto X-bander, CHHA, is very common here thanks to its much higher power and almost-clear channel 1610. Not so the third, CHTO 1690 in Greek (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** MEXICO. 1549.82, March 19 at 0200 UT, JBA carrier again aside the 1550.00 stations, presumed XEREL Morelia. I`ve asked Mike Jeziorski, Qro., if he has anything further on this (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** NORTH AMERICA. 6935.0 AM, March 19 at 0138, JBA pirate music. These say it`s Sycko Radio: https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,142425.0.html (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** NORTH AMERICA. 7475, re Station YHWH: ``I had corresponded with the op sometime back and he wrote that the song was actually recorded under the pseudonym "Lace" by himself and his (then) wife. He sent me a CD that had it and a few other songs he did at the time. best - Rick in Arizona Barton`` (via Glenn Hauser, WOR)
** NORTH AMERICA. 11529.9, it seems we won`t be hearing ex-`Hikari FM` on SW. FYI:
``[WOR] Pirate on 11529.9 kHz. (formerly Hikari FM) to leave SW, in favor of MW (1710 kHz.) -- Hi Glenn - Here is my latest (March 14) correspondence from Ivan, the operator of 1710 kHz. I will miss chasing his SW signal to hear his unique musical selections. Ron Howard (Monterey, Calif.)
"Yeah I do not think I should do 11530 anymore and should focus on 1710 kHz. It seems like it is possible to reach your area at night if I dedicate the resources to it. On top of that I am getting attention locally on 1710 kHz. It can be heard 24 kilometers away during the day and that is just with 25 watts. However, as soon as I get a decent signal out, I will move away from 1710 so that I do not have to deal with XEPE which is strong in your area. I will let you know once I do that.
The shortwave transmitter just kind of sucks as compared to the MW transmitter, it is more powerful but the modulator is sensitive and just kind of junk. But class G can be just as efficient as class D, it is just bulkier. I think going forward the plan will be to disassemble the shortwave antenna and use the wire from it to make the inverted L longer and shrink the loading coil. Then I can build a 100 watt class G MW transmitter and will be getting a decently strong signal into your area at night. You can listen in your car, lol, you cannot do that on shortwave . My hope with 11530 was to reach Asia, but I do not think I can do that with what I have at the moment, I need a directional antenna which is not feasible to put up here.
So you can forget about 11530 at this point in time. I am not going to be on it for a while and by the time I will get the idea to try again it will be with a different transmitter and probably in a different location. Last time I tried MW, I failed (I was dumb and didn't use single core wire for the antenna) but this time I am getting out at night so I think It will be better to do it instead. Kind of like killing two birds with one stone here, I get nighttime coverage and local coverage which average people can listen to. Maybe getting into British Columbia is not an option but I think I will reach more people this way. Very Best Regards."`` (via Ron Howard, WOR iog)
``1710 is a non-starter in BC (coastal) as the channel is totally dominated by Travis AFB. He needs to consider another channel. Perhaps just outside of the MW band --- 1720? 73, Walt Salmaniw`` (via Glenn Hauser, WOR)
** SPAIN. 9690, 12030, 17715, Wed Mar 19 at 2300, token English from SNR, VG on all but JBA on 17755 into Maryland SDR, preview something about Eurasia (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** TURKEY. 5960.004-, March 19 at 2257, VOT not off the air, IS & IDs, S9+40/50 into UTwente, 2300 s/on English, but no time to listen yet; 2336 music, 2340 ``always-by-your-side`` promo, music. 2348 ``with-you-every-hour`` promo, music. 2354 s/off as if it`s 1330 on 13635, awry, 2355 IS to 2356* uncovering the 6CI which was quite the understation (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2286 monitoring: ``From Richard Lemke, St. Albert, Alberta, Canada, the desk of Richard’s listening Post, Radio: JRC NRD-535 HF (30 years of service), antenna: random long wires in the trees, WRMI, USA, World of Radio #2286, 9395 kHz, QRN, 2330, 2343, 2358 (45433), Signal S6.5 very unsettled, 2359, March 18 UTC 2025 [Tue] (Lemke, Richard -AB)``
Not confirmed Tuesday March 18 at 2330 on WRMI 9395; at 2329, S8/9+10 into Plymouth MN SDR - but totally blocked by huge noise covering entire waterfall for two minutes starting precisely at 2330; some local problem, then OK with WOR 2286 confirmed. Meanwhile I immediately tried nearby Minneapolis SDR where it was clear S9+10.
Also confirmed UT Wednesday March 19 at 0045 the 0030 on SW Radio, Germany, 3975.003-, S8/9+5 into UTwente.
Also confirmed Wednesday March 19 at 2030 on SW Radio, Germany, 3975.004- S9+10 into UTwente.
Also confirmed Wednesday March 19 at 2100 on WBCQ, 7490 -23 Hz = 7489.977, S9+10 into NH SDR. Next:
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S; 1730 UT Thursday SW Radio, Germany 3975 & 6160.
Financial support appreciated for our non-commercial public service program: thanks for a generous contribution from Peter Robinson, Preston UK, via PayPal to: woradio at yahoo.com
Or by MO or check on a US bank to: Glenn Hauser, P O Box 1684, Enid OK 73702 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
UNIDENTIFIED. 1030 kHz, March 19 in the 06/07 UT hour, nothing but continuous praise music in Spanish. Sounds like from a single performing group, song after song. Suspect KCWJ MO, Radio Vida. Radio-locator leads to the network website https://radiovida.com/about/ which does not include any station on 1030! HQ is in Weslaco TX, so flagship is KRGE 1290. Also detailed program sched by day and time, https://radiovida.com/programacion/ no zone specified, but should we assume it be CDT = UT-5? Most outlets are in CT, but not all, and there are also in Argentina, Honduras, México. With some blanx and no consistency during the 1-2+ am hour, which might correlate with all the `fill` music I am hearing. Late at night I`m normally offline, but will have to try to match webstream. At 1700 UT, stream runs long string of IDs in English starting with KRGE but not the whole list as on website; did not catch KCWJ included. Are all stations taking the simultaneous network feed, possibly inserting local IDs?
How about KCTA 1030 Corpus Christi, 50 kW daytimer + limited hours depending on WBZ SR/SS but should never be on in the nightmiddle. Weekday program sked shows starting at 4 am CT = 09 UT, and final program starting at 8:32 pm = 0132 UT, so until 0200?? Entire program sked does not show a single title in Spanish, altho NRC AM Log classifies it as EE/SS:REL. That ``SS`` is the only reason I considered it a possibility, besides running overtime (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Glenn Hauser log March 17-18, 2025 |

Wednesday, March 19 2025
** CHINA. 9610.002, March 18 at 2241, S9/+15 into UTwente, unknown language announcement but not Italian, then rock song in English; more anmts and pop music in other languages. Checking for possible extraneous Italian from Turkey, overrunning English -2225* so not that today. Must be Mongolian from CNR8, 100 kW, 286 degrees from Beijing site, so not too unfavorable toward Europe (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** EAST TURKISTAN. 5960.000, March 18 at *2315, PBS Xinjiang RTV, cuts on JIP amid programming, S9+5/15 into UTwente. Nominal start is *2310 and after that provides Chinese Communist Chinese language co-channel interference = CCCCCCI or 6CI to Turkey, but which is AWOL today; from Urumqi, land of imperialist ChiCom genocide against Uighurs and other Moslems (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** SPAIN. 9690, Monday March 17 at 2300, token English from SNR, S9+10/25 into Maryland SDR; also 12030 S7/S9, 17715 S7/S9, 17755 JBA; preview topic interview with author of a book about women (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** TURKEY [and non]. 5960.004-, March 17 at 2255, VOT IS, S9+30/40 into UTwente. No time to listen, but 2340 check, TRTVOTVorld.com promo, music. Considerable hum. 2346 ``always-by-your-side`` promo. 2350 ``a-b-y-s`` again! 2351 multi-lingual ID filler reel. 2353 s/off. 2354 IS for a bit and off* uncovering Chinese music; 2359 their own neat IS, TS, 2400 NA, etc. (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2286 monitoring: confirmed Monday March 17 at 2056 the 2030 on SW Radio, Germany, 3975.003-, S9+10/15 into UTwente.
Also confirmed UT Tuesday March 18 at 0330 on WRMI 7780, S7/S9 into Maryland SDR.
Barely missed checking Tuesday March 18 at 1300 on WRMI 9955; anyone hear it?
Confirmed Tuesday March 18 at 1415 the 1400 on WRMI 9955, JBA direct.
Confirmed Tuesday March 18 at 2104 the 2100 on IRRS SW via AM Italia, VP S6/S7 into UTwente across Europe. Next:
2330 UT Tuesday WRMI 9395 to NNW; 0030 UT Wednesday SW Radio, Germany 3975; 2030 UT Wednesday SW Radio, Germany 3975; 2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW; 0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S; 1730 UT Thursday SW Radio, Germany 3975 & 6160.

Or by MO or check on a US bank to: Glenn Hauser, P O Box 1684, Enid OK 73702 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** U S A. 730, March 18 around 0630 UT, mixture none dominant, unlike last night with `The Other Side of Midnight` - Greg Hardison replies: ``Glenn: — "The Other Side Of Midnight" matches up on the KQPN webstream. I'd go with your own guess, as to the 730 unID. — the other G H`` i.e. West Memphis AR, 1 kW minor lobe to west; day pattern is NW/SE. An instance of `breaking main format`, sports, diversely to fill overnight (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
UNIDENTIFIED. 1030 kHz, March 18 at 0645-0706+ UT, praise music in Spanish again tonight. I stay with it hoping for any announcement, even ToH ID, but none heard unless I dozed off. As on March 15, more likely KCWJ MO than KCTA TX (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Glenn Hauser logs March 16-17, 2025 |

Monday, March 17 2025
** CUBA [and non]. 6030, 7355, 7435, March 17 at 0447, weak pulse jamming against nothing, tsk2, as Martí & Greenville have been turned off by *rump. I bet they`re celebrating in Habana. I bet they take plenty of time to turn off the jammers. Now`s your chance, CFVP! But who knows, USAGM might get resurrected if enough oppo to *rump (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** MEXICO. 660 kHz, UT Monday March 17 at 0431 ``Nuevo León en La Hora Nacional``, so it`s the regional/stateish cutaway from the ``national`` hour, ergo on this frequency it`s XEFZ Monterrey. Quick check of some other NLs, sounds similar but can`t make //, XEG 1050, XEMR 1140 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** OKLAHOMA. 1210, March 17 before 0500 UT, strong talk station, 0503 ``5 states, KGYN`` so Guymon is again failing to aim away from us, take that!, WPHT (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** ROMANIA. 9510, March 17 at 0453, S9+30/40 of folk music, from RRI English for western N America.
Tentative A25 schedule from March 30; Wolfgang Bueschel excerpted from HFCC and gh picked out English only; all shifting one UT hour earlier due to irrelevant DST in Europe, so this will be at 0300 on 9740, 11620:
A-25 season shortwave requests of RRI Bucharest SW center transmissions, in AM and DRM digital mode, 300 kW. With CIRAF target zone, kW, azimuth, [no] slew, antenna type.

** TURKEY. 9610.006-, Sunday March 16 at 2149, VOT English is not off the air, S9+20/30 into UTwente but with considerably more than usual CNR Mongolian CCI, ending feature on Turkish foreign policy, multi-lingual ID filler reel; 2152 music. 2156 ``with-you-every-hour`` promo, music. I`m listening now for `Letterbox` in case the 2300+ repeat be missing. Or rather I`m recording to listen a bit later, so the times are approx. I never hear the `L`box` theme, but at 2200, YL hostess gives her name but can`t understand it, talks about ``spring has sprung``, something about Turkish folklore, natural enemas(?), but it`s not the Folklore segment per se, as 2203 starts answering correspondence, from 1) Mr. Max[?] in the UK, who is glad TRT is keeping SW. 2) -- Danielson, Sweden, 67-year-old, wants QSL for 13635 & 6050. I think she says ``we also issue eQSLs`` which would be a new policy, but will send hardcopy since he sent r.p. 2206 song break from 1974y. 3) 35-year-old from Canada; hostess is 43. 4) at 2212 André, Romania. 5) at 2213 Siddartha --- wants to know if International Women`s Day is celebrated in Turkey, and what is the gender ratio? 43.6 megamales, 43.8 megafemales, or 49.4 and 50% [sic] respectively. 2216 ``shoutout`` to Ricky Hein, South Dakota, who I think she said was getting 11111 reception on 5960, 6125; maybe will improve at Marchend with different frequencies. 2217 closing song. 2218 `L`Box` theme outro, tune-out.
5959.992-, Sunday March 16 at 2303, VOT not off the air now either, S9+40 into UTwente. Usually offset slightly plus (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** U S A [and non]. 4930, March 17 at 0444, JBA carrier, no doubt VOA BOTSWANA relay still on air, but others report no new programming, and site expected to be closed down later this date.
9775, March 17 at 0455, S7/S9 of music with long pause between tunes, presumably fill music, off by 0459: VOA English BOTSWANA scheduled 0300-0500, still running while HQ in Washington is locked up.
Various other relay sites are affected, MW and SW, disappearing from air, replacing with other programming, etc., everyone trying to keep up with this fast-breaking situation, reporting to the WOR iog. Of course this also threatens innocent bystations using USAGM facilities such as Radio Thailand, Pilipinas.
Greenville guys were told to shut the power off to the building. That means no A/C and no heat. In NC the equipment will be ruined in a month. It`s over for shortwave (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) See also CUBA [and non]
** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2286 monitoring: Also confirmed Sunday March 16 at 2000 on IRRS SW via AM Italia, 1322.997+, S9 into UTwente across Europe.
Also confirmed Sunday March 16 at 2236 the 2230 on SW Radio, Germany, 3975.003-, S9/+10 into UTwente.
Also confirmed Sunday March 16 at 2330 on WRMI 7780, S9+30 into S Texas SDR; and same time on WRMI 7570, S9+35 into same.
Also confirmed UT Monday March 17 at 0030 on WRMI 7780, S9+15/35 into S Texas SDR.
Also confirmed UT Monday March 17 at 0300 on Area 51 webcast; 5130- WBCQ stayed on a bit longer but playing music instead. Next:
2030 UT Monday SW Radio, Germany 3975; 0330 UT Tuesday WRMI 7780 to SW; 1300 UT Tuesday WRMI 9955 to SSE [also web-, phonecast; jammed?]; 1400 UT Tuesday WRMI 9955 to SSE [also web-, phonecast; jammed?]; 2100 UT Tuesday IRRS 1323-Italy; 2330 UT Tuesday WRMI 9395 to NNW; 0030 UT Wednesday SW Radio, Germany 3975; 2030 UT Wednesday SW Radio, Germany 3975; 2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW; 0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S; 1730 UT Thursday SW Radio, Germany 3975 & 6160.

** U S A. 5950, Mon Mar 17 at 0618, WRMI still on with TOMBS, running a few words behind 5850. 5950 had been normally off at this hour. Xmtr grid shows until 0400 only, but System E shows weekends only also 0600-1500. Does Monday morning count as ``weekend``? And is there really a break 0400-0600? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** U S A. 570, March 17 at 0631 UT, Sioux Falls ad, and plug for Alaska cruise with WNAXtrips.com, which converts to https://wnax.com/events/categories/trips/ Quite a sideline for a radio station, travel broker too, like WRMI. Where`s KLIF, or XEBJB? WNAX Yankton SD barely reaches here on daytime groundwave when KLIF is a problem (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, WOR)
UNIDENTIFIED. 730, March 17 at 0634 UT, `The Other Side of Midnight`, rather than XEX or anything else. I`m running across this show more and more, but not among the `Shows and their Network Codes` on page 263 of the 2024 NRC AM Log; should be added. Originates at WABC, which provides huge podcast archive,
https://wabcradio.com/podcast/the-other-side-of-midnight-with-frank-morano/ but I can`t find a mere affiliate list; is there one, anywhere? I would guess KQPN West Memphis AR, which is talk format per NRC AM Log, but website is about sports only. Also heard here is KKDA Grand Prairie TX in The Metroplex, but it`s Korean. TOSOM not to be confused with a book, movie of same name (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
UNIDENTIFIED. 1330, UT Mon Mar 17 at 0438 UT, hymn in English with chimes is dominating. Unseems my regular nearbie, KNSS Wichita, which is news/talk with far right extremists such as Hannity scheduled this hour. Too many other choices of REL/GOS formats with low power, bad direxionality (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
UNIDENTIFIED. 4790, March 17 at 0443, JBA carrier vs CODAR, intriguing since no broadcasters listed except an hour of ChiCom jamming at 1230 per EiBi; could be ute, but nothing on this exact frequency per Klingenfuß 2022. Not a third harmonic as 4+7+9 = 20, not a multiple of 3 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
UNIDENTIFIED. 4950, March 17 at 0445, JBA carrier, much weaker than 4940- Venezuela. Nothing listed in EiBi, Aoki, or Klingenfuß; but could be 3 x 1650 or 5 x 990 or 9 x 550 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
UNIDENTIFIED. 6882, March 17 at 0449, open carrier, pirate? None reported currently in HFU; years ago, MRI appeared here. Ute? Nothing on this exact frequency in Klingenfuß 2022 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
UNIDENTIFIED. 7505, March 17 at 0451, JBA carrier; nothing but WRNO listed except 25 minutes of ChiCom jamming at 2335. WRNO sometimes runs much later than this; maybe Metairie merely excited? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Glenn Hauser logs March 15-16, 2025 |
|
Sunday, March 16 2025
** TURKEY. 5960.003+, March 15 at 2259, VOT not off the air today, unlike yesterday, ending IS, 2300 TS and s/on English -- announcer sounds out of breath, like he just ran up the stairs, barely getting into studio in time for live announcement, always awry in Ankara, oblivious to the several repeats of the 1330 broadcast on 13635. ** U S A [and non]. VOA situation: Not all the staff at Greenville [Grimesland] are full-time employees; seven technicians are personal service contractors (PSC) and are to be put on administrative leave until further notice, but not locked out, unlike some personnel in Washington.
Five Government Service Employees remaining are: three supervisors, the chief engineer and a secretary. One person already accepted a buy-out. A former manager has returned. It`s unclear if there will be enough staff to keep running the site 24/7.
Perhaps they will at least keep Radio Martí broadcasting as long as the program feed remains. It seems there has been a lot of repetition already in music and talk features to fill the 24-hour schedule.
Already planned: GB-8, a 500 kW AEG transmitter is to be retired, as no high voltage transformer can be obtained for it. One of the Kuwait senders, a Continental 417 will be moved in to replace it.
Now in doubt is a major expansion of the Kuwait site, three x 250 kW Ampegons, to replace São Tomé, and others. Other relay sites? So far it appears that Tinang, Philippines is still operating (Glenn Hauser, 0451 UT March 16, WOR)
** U S A [and non]. Monitoring by gh: 13820, March 16 at 1457, open carrier S6/S7, 1500 JIP Radio Martí with ID. 11860 was not on at 1457 but is on after 1500. 11930 already running at 1457, S7/9+5, all Grimesland NC site. Presumably about to be abolished.
Greenville manager Willford Cooper could not find anything out at 1604 UT March 16. The computer network was down and Greenville getting its Martí programs from satellite. Staff could not put in their time cards, get the daily activity report of operational memos from DC. So if they had been told to shut down they would never know.
But by 1654 UT: The order has been passed to Macon Dail, the Chief Engineer, to shut Greenville down. All employees have been told not to show up for work.
Alan Furst, Kansas City, reports: ``Martí went off at 16:30 today 3/16. All transmitters appear to be off in 22 and 25 meters. It happened abruptly, although I wasn't listening closely to know what they said at the end. Was a surprise.``
Many USAGM services are missing frequencies, dead air, filling with music or repeating old programming as the axe is falling; much monitoring of details in the WOR indian ocean group. The White House has quoted Dan Robinson`s critique of VOA as one justification. And Kim Elliott says, ``The zombification of VOA has begun. Listening at 0400 UTC 15 March on 4930 kHz, Botswana relay via an SDR in South Africa: It was the VOA "Worldwide in Five" newscast from March 9 at 0200 UTC.`` - he probably meant 0400 UT 16 March as this was posted a few minutes after that.
VOA`s broadcasting of week-olds eclipses Voice of Turkey, where their olds would be no more than 14.5 hours stale.
At 1900 UT March 16, via UTwente checking all VOA scheduled frequencies per EiBi: Tigrigna: 9485 BOT & 12040 CVA dead air; 13765 KWT music English: 13590 D-L = Germany music French: 17700 GB OFF Korean: 7465 & 9800 PHT, 9575 THA all with music (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Saturday March 15 at 2300, still no signal on WTWW, 9475, when WOR appeared a few times in A-24 season before 9475 became inoperable. Maybe to return?
UT Sunday March 16 at 0000, new non-time for WOR reconfirmed on WRMI 9955, preacher, instead of UT Sunday 0100, despite still on the don`t-you-believe-it System B sked for Saturday 8:00 PM EDT.
Confirmed UT Sunday March 16 at 0349 UT on WA0RCR, 1860 AM, MO, S9+20 groundwave into nearby SDR but with storm crashes from Alabama area, 5 minutes into so started circa 0344 the 0315v.
Also confirmed Sunday March 16 at 1047 the 1030 on WRMI 9955, S9 direct. (Also, after 0930, WRMI was still *not* on 9455, contrary to own sked, when WOR is supposedly aired on Saturdays.) Next:

** U S A [and non]. 5950, Sat Mar 15 at 2251 into UTwente, ham radio news in English, but with modulated pulse QRM once per second, horrible. Same thing audible without QRM from WRMI into Georgia SDR. Xmtr grid shows 5950 WRMI-10 does not start until 2300! Contradixion: System L sked shows 5950 WRMI starts at 2100 including `Viva Miami` at 2245. Something`s always odd at Okeechobee (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** U S A. 15138/15142/15146//15154/15158/15162/15166, March 16 at 1453, WMLK only S9/+10 on fundamental 15150 but manages to produce unstable spurs at +/- ~4 kHz intervals. Something`s bonkers at Bethel (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
