Glenn Hauser logs September 15-16, 2020 |

Wednesday, September 16 2020
** ARGENTINA [non]. 9395, Sept 15 at 2131, RAE via WRMI is listed as Italian this hour, but since COVID-19 hit, each language hour could be filled by bits in any or all of their 8 languages, which explains why they are in English now talking about the 100th anniversary of the first radio broadcast on August 27, which presented Wagner`s `Parsifal` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** COLOMBIA. New VOA relay via HJHJ 600: see separate post headed VENEZUELA [non] ** COLOMBIA. 4940, Sept 16 at 0115, quick check for anonymous new missionary station, via TWR Bonaire SDR, after concentrating on 600, finds a JBA signal here, probably only the Peruvian. No TDOA tonight (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 15370, Sept 15 at 2112, RHC Spanish is suptorted/JBM; wiggle that patchcord! Something`s always wrong at RHC. I am beginning to suspect sabotage somewhere along the line from studio to STL to transmitter to monitoring; someone preventing clear distribution of Commie propaganda. Or maybe just low morale, don`t-give-a-damn attitude. All it takes is one weakest link (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** ITALY. 14222-USB, Sept 15 at 2115, IZ0GYR, Antonio in Rome, CQ 20, working N1EW, and being repeatedly called by WA7TEN. Sometimes under an open carrier. Look at his profusely illustrated website as he is an artist and famous? actor: IZ0GYR Italy flag Italy Antonino Iuorio Viale dei Quattro Venti 10 Rome 00152 Italy https://www.qrz.com/lookup/iz0gyr (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** MALI. 13630, Sept 15 at 2121, dead air at S7-S8; then bits of talk breaking thru in American English, so must be CRI relay, altho now supposed to be toward end of sesquihour in Arabic. Wiggle that patchcord (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** TURKEY. 9830, Sept 15 at 2220, via UTwente, VOT is VG with music, 2222 COVID PSA; while at 2248 direct to here I find it S5-S6 poor (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A [non]. 9740, Tue Sept 15 at 2128, too-well-e-nun-ci-a-ted Q&A about where`s the A-mer-i-can room in a mu-se-um, i.e. a language lesson, S7-S9 in English only: ``Go down-stairs, then turn right...`` and chopped off the air at 2129.5*, leaving us hanging. It`s VOA French via Woofferton UK, supposedly at 2100-2130 M-F only. Don`t blame Encompass for the chop, but VOA where it no longer matters to match programming to SW transmission times (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) This report dispatched at 0414 UT September 16

Glenn Hauser logs: new VOA via Colombia 600 to Venezuela |
|
Wednesday, September 16 2020
** VENEZUELA [non]. You may recall that VOA has been trying to get into Venezuela via a MW transmitter in an adjacent country. Guyana was approached some 6 months ago about using a 560 kHz relay, but VOA was turned down. TWR Bonaire, which owes the USA something for licensing KTWR Guam, would seem the obvious choice, but they must have higher priorities for 800 kHz, at least during prime time.
On September 11, Don Moore informed me: ``COLOMBIA - Starting next week VOA Spanish programs for Venezuela will be relayed on 600 kHz (listed 50 kW) via Radio Libertad in Barranquilla, Colombia. The broadcasts are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. on September 15th, or 0000 UTC September 16th. The schedule I received shows the relays as being three hours long Monday to Friday (local days) and two hours long on Saturday and Sunday. (VOA via Don Moore)`` So I`m all set to monitor this début via remotes in the area. Before 0000, none of them are any good for 600 kHz except TWR Bonaire, where I noticed there is also someone in Barinas, Venezuela tuned to 600: 600 kHz, Sept 15 at 2353 UT, sounds like a preacher in Spanish, with QRM. But at 0000 Sept 16, Radio Rebelde is mostly dominant, no VOA heard yet. There are basically two stations mixing. On the Key West SDR I compare to 5025, distorted Rebelde, and find no match at first, but then I can hear a match in the background of 600, and the foreground talk is about Venezuela. 600 would not seem a very good choice, but at least there are no YVs on it -- yet; there may not have been (m)any other options, and R. Libertad is a good 50 kW. Nearest major competitor may be 40 kW in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Barranquilla is 863 km = 536 statute miles from Caracas, with Maracaibo about midway. At distancefromto.net if you enter Caracas, Venezuela, looking closely at the map, that merely reaches the west end of Caracas? province, near where the map is labeled Carabobo. You have to enter ``Caracas, Caracas, Venezuela`` to get to the capital city. The path is unfortunately all over-land since Bqa is on the NW coast. But this will be relying on skywave. How does that compare to the CubaRM? R. Rebelde on 600 is in the east, San Germán, Holguín, at 1494 km = 928 statute miles = 807 nautical miles from Caracas; and its bearing is NW from there. Venzies with direxional radios may be able to null it and get mostly HJHJ/VOA. Is it not convenient that this ``opposition`` service is already named Radio Libertad, but that`s coincidental as it goes way back deriving from the Bqa newspaper La Libertad: https://cadenaradiallalibertad.com.co/sitio/ Guess what, I don`t see anything about hooking up with VOA on its website, nor is there any specific program schedule to be seen. Resuming what I am axually able to hear on 600: at 0016, Rebelde is dominant // 5025 as VOA fades; 0022 RR music // 5025 via KW. 0027 ``VOA Noticias`` definitely heard, 0028 again concerning Venezuela; 0031 VOA ID, ``una producción de La Voz de America``. At 0049 I`ve brought up the ``listen live`` link here, first of seven stations https://cadenaradiallalibertad.com.co/sitio/radios/ and there is the VOA relay loud & clear, with program ID ``Buenos Dias, America`` --- so it`s anything but live! Rather played back from the morning some 12 hours ago. 0101 concluding that program, with ID again, and now also for ``600 AM, en Barranquilla, emsisora afiliada con sistema de noticias de la VOA``; Then own callsign ID as ``HJHJ, 50 mil vatios...`; at 0114 another joint ID. Perhaps they have now switched to the less stale tarde VOA program, `El Mundo al Día`, also available as a 32-minute podcast, but archive shows M-F only, as nothing ever happens on weekends. VOA website does not say anything about this either that I can find, but you can get their program audios --- are there any others left in Spanish? https://www.voanoticias.com/radio-buenos-dias-america https://www.voanoticias.com/radio-mundo-al-dia ``Radio en vivo`` is NOT live, but the latest 32-minute episode: https://www.voanoticias.com/episode/el-mundo-al-dia-noticiero-voz-de-america-radio-237606 And o yes, specifically for/about Venezuela, basically a TV show, but audio-only also available and surely filling some of the 600 hours, in fact probably what initiated this service at 0000: https://www.voanoticias.com/venezuela-360-television (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CANADA. 278-MCW kHz, 0625 UT Sept 15, JBA, dash and ND beacon NM, 500 watts from Matagami, Québec; new for me? Not quite, last logged:
``278 kHz, Dec 14 [2018] at 0717, beacon NM and dash: 500 watts from Matagami, Quebec. Matagami is in a remote off-road area near 78 W/50 N, NNE of Rouyn-Noranda.`` Value-added info to this log per Wikipedia: ``Toponymy --- In Cree, "matagami" means "meeting of waters", in reference to the large rivers that join.`` And the town exists because of a zinc+ mine. Interesting that its neighbor at DXinfocentre.com is at almost the same latitude in SK within 16 seconds; no sign of that now: 278 N1 CAN SK Assiniboia 200 49 43 42 -105 56 57 278 NM CAN QC MATAGAMI 500 49 43 26 -77 44 30 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CHINA. CNR1 jammer survey, Sept 15 at 1417: none in the 13s or 12s; at 1419, JBA or JBA carriers on 11150, 11120, 11100, 10920 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** COLOMBIA. 4940-, Sept 15 at 0134 via TWR Bonaire KiwiSDR, anonymous missionary station with M&W talk in Spanish only, reads S4-S5 in USB reception, but S8-S9 in SynchAM, carrier offset varying from -2.8 to -6.1 Hz. 0200 it`s peaking S9+15 at -4.3 to -4.6 Hz, protracted sermon about Apocalipsis = Revelation. 0311 tropical music. 0356 yelling preacher in echoey venue, with music. Outro program with club para niños, addresses: Apartado 260, San José, 2120, Costa Rica, or Historia Preferida, Casilla 14-23, Cochabamba, Bolivia; 0359 NO ID, into songs; 0455 still/again music with automated? timecheck as 12:54, 0458 preacher, still past 0527. That`s UT-4 while Colombia is UT-5. Others also report such timechex; this implies 4940 is for Venezuela if not from inside that country. Of course they had been heard playing part of the Colombian national anthem at *2300; but that could be misdirexion. I posted to the WOR iog: ``OK, since the perpetrators are mum about what and where this station really is, it`s about time to get on it with the TDOA direxion-finding technique, triangulation or multiangulation using remote receivers. First place to rule in or out is Puerto LLeras, which is in central Colombia, SE of Bogotá, where 6010 & 5910 were located. Let us know your results first!`` --- I myself have never tried this Timed-Delay-Of-Arrival technique, and am not familiar with the procedure, but others in our group have in other cases; yet no replies, so far (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A [non]. Correcting WOR 2051 monitoring report of IRRS 7290, Iran is on 7300 of course, not 7290; I did it again! Fixed: ...Again this week no 7291 warble, hope gone for good, but always annoying inevitable splash from 7280 Vietnam and 7300 Iran; the latter should be off after 1820... (Glenn Hauser, WOR) ** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2051 monitoring: confirmed UT Tuesday September 15 at 0330 on WRMI 5800, VG S9+10/20 at Bonaire SDR; but recheck 0350 just in time to hear me cut off at 0350:40 for two IDs in Spanish by Rudy and some Mexican, then fill music starting with a version of ``Chariots of Fire``. I quickly asked WRMI to look into this anomaly and prevent it from happening again. Next: 2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW 0100 UT Thursday WRMI 7780 to NE Full schedule including AM, FM, webcasts, satellite, podcasts: http://www.worldofradio.com/radioskd.html Thanks this week for financial support from Robert W Gruska, Glendale NY, who has been contributing periodically since at least 2009; a PMO to Glenn Hauser, P O Box 1684, Enid OK 73702; if by check please in US funds on a US bank. Financial support may alternatively be sent via PayPal to woradio at yahoo.com - not necessarily US funds as PP will convert (Glenn Hauser, OK WOR) This report dispatched at 1652 UT September 15

Monday, September 14 2020
** BRAZIL. 4985, Sept 14 at 0621, S6-S9 music, presumed R. Brasil Central, in the clear as RTTY is off! Ivo Ivanov also reports it tonight at 0800 & 0900 via Brasilia SDR as ``reactivated``. Was it really ever unactivated? Normally totally blocked here by RTTY from NSS. EiBi shows both as 24 hours. Checked 11815v for RBC but nothing there, maybe off and not only not propagable (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** COLOMBIA. 4940-, Sept 14 at 0346, new anonymous missionary station is VP S5-S6 even at Bonaire which in AMSynch now shows carrier -5.4 Hz. Last check direct here at 0623 finds S8-S9 of talk and music, but not enough vs noise level. In the WOR iog, Lúcio Otávio Bobrowiec in Embu, SP, Brasil was hearing it even later, 0600-0808 mostly with Spanish sermons being translated to English, and never any IDs even at hourtops. Earlier log from me was English to Spanish --- sure about that? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 6145, UT Mon Sept 14 at 0616, RHC English with Arnie wrapping up `DXers Unlimited` until 0618.5, then `Ed Newman` with Mailbag Show. Ed make it sound so normal to be living in a Commie dictatorship! 6145 is S8-S9 with good modulation, while 6100 is S9+20 but undermodulated, suptorted. 5040 and 6000 are off already. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 8502-USB, Sept 14 at 0315, NMG USCG New Orleans. Mark Sills, Dallas, reminds us of marine weather on 8502 and 4316 - the unflappable robot despite hurricane bearing down. Before 0400 I`m getting 8502-USB fairly via Bonaire SDR I happen to have up, but there are probably better ways to hear them; 4316-USB not heard. Don`t expect any breaking news of hurricane hits. EiBi shows nominal schedule: 8502 0330-0405 USA NMG USCG New Orleans E NAm nm 8502 0515-0550 USA NMG USCG New Orleans E NAm nm 8502 0930-1005 USA NMG USCG New Orleans E NAm nm 8502 1115-1150 USA NMG USCG New Orleans E NAm nm 8502 1530-1605 USA NMG USCG New Orleans E NAm nm 8502 1715-1750 USA NMG USCG New Orleans E NAm nm 8502 2130-2245 USA NMG USCG New Orleans E NAm nm 8502 2315-2350 USA NMG USCG New Orleans E NAm nm Similar sked on 12788, and in between the voiceblox are lengthier fax transmissions centered 1.9 kHz higher (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A [and non]. World of Radio 2051 monitoring: missed checking UT Mon Sept 14 at 0030 on WRMI 7730; anyone hear it? Confirmed UT Mon Sept 14 at 0130 on WRMI 7780, S8-S9 at UTwente. Also WRN webcast. Also confirmed UT Mon Sept 14 at 0230, VG on WRMI 7780 via UTwente; and also VG on 5800 via some closer SDR, Rochester? Also confirmed UT Mon Sept 14 starting late on Area 51 webcast, from 0308.8, after some Mantovani music and closing by a monthly DJ whose name I did not catch; while WBCQ 5130 achieves only a JBA carrier into Rochester, likely less here; and no signal on 6159.9. Meanwhile Larry will explained: ``Hi Glenn, American Debauchery with Duane Bruce ran a little late tonight, so WOR will be on about 7 or 8 minutes late on 5130. Hope you like the good music from Frederick Moe on "Herman's Radio and Record Room," nominally 0230 UTC, but delayed tonight because of Debauchery's over-run. Cheers, Lw`` ``Next week, 6159.9 still planned, right? Glenn`` ``Yes, we are planning to complete the switchover to 6159.9 on September 19. There are two shows on 5130 that aren't produced here that will be displaced - one is probably going to move to an open time slot on 7490, the other's fate is not determined yet. I hope to have an updated schedule completed by mid-week and I'll post a note to the WOR list when it's done. Also, 5130 is poor to fair here and very noisy at this time. It's definitely on the air but propagation isn't happy tonight. Lw`` Also confirmed UT Mon Sept 14 at 0330 on WRMI 9955, S6-S8 at Pardinho SDR, Brasil. Also confirmed Mon Sept 14 from 1800:54 on IRRS, 7290 BULGARIA, S9+30 via UTwente, and apparently intact until 1829:54 as my final words are not! cut off but Feature Story News opening is upcut. Earlier monitoring of 7290: 1753 JBA carrier from algo; *1757:10 cut-on strong open carrier; 1758:49 JIP rock music; 1759:53 IRRS ID, offering numbered QSL for reports to P O Box 10-980, N-20110 Milano, Italy; contrary to web info from IRRS that they are no longer accepting postal mail! 1800:27 FSN headlines, always only 3 quickies before WOR start. Again this week no 7291 warble, hope gone for good, but always annoying inevitable splash from 7280 Vietnam and 7290 Iran; the latter should be off after 1820. Next: 0100 UT Tuesday WRMI 7780 to NE 0330 UT Tuesday WRMI 5800 NEW to SSE 2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW 0100 UT Thursday WRMI 7780 to NE Full schedule including AM, FM, webcasts, satellite, podcasts: http://www.worldofradio.com/radioskd.html Thanks this week for financial support from Robert W Gruska, Glendale NY, who has been contributing periodically since at least 2009; a PMO to Glenn Hauser, P O Box 1684, Enid OK 73702; if by check please in US funds on a US bank. Financial support may alternatively be sent via PayPal to woradio at yahoo.com - not necessarily US funds as PP will convert (Glenn Hauser, OK WOR) ** U S A. 5085, Sept 14 at 0620, WTWW-2 is still on, S9+10 weaker than usual and modulation much weaker, JBM. It`s really ailing; hasn`t Ted noticed? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. Quick minor DX-pedition north of Enid on US 81/64/60 parked near Craig Road intersexion just south of the T, Sunday September 13 at 2148-2201 UT on caradio: 1130, at 2148 no signal or at least no modulation from KLEY Wellington KS, just some ACI splash, and a JBA fast SAH between two stations, one of them presumably KWKH Shreveport remnant. [1130 checked next day Sept 14 at 1905 UT, groundwave scarcely a semihour after local mean noon, on bigrigs at HQ, no S9 open carrier any more, but some JBA carrier too weak to DF, possibly KLEY on exciter or 1-watt night power] 620, at 2150 and still 2201, dead air from Spanish gospel huxter KTNO Plano (Metroplex) TX. 1350, at 2153, JBA mix of talk and CW music making fast SAH; normally an open daytime channel in Enid; both Okies a little too far for groundwave, 180-watt KPNS Duncan and 1000-watt KTLQ Tahlequah; also possible 500-watt KMAN Manhattan KS. KTLQ in Cherokee Country is the C&W one. 970, at 2154, 2500-watt KCFO Tulsa gospel huxter surprisingly strong here; inside Enid blocked by local 960 KGWA. KCFO has a minor lobe to its NW, so now we are closer into it. 1370, at 2155, still no trace of alleged KGNO Dodge City KS. 1460, at 2155, KZUE El Reno OK Mexmx has a fast SAH from another station. It`s early, 2 hours and 46 minutes before LSS at 0041 but skywave seems to be starting up on topend. Closests are KKOY Chanute KS, and KCLE Burleson TX. 1510, at 2156, ESPN Radio, ads, 2158-2159 fade out/in as skywave, back in time for KCTE Kansas City ID, i.e. Independence MO. With 132/minute SAH from algo = 2.2 Hz. Definitely skywave as KC/MO does not make it here on groundwave above 1.1 MHz (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** VIETNAM. The 1600 VOV English broadcast is still running, checked via UTwente Sept 14 at 1619, VG on 9729.952v and 7279.999+, also audible on much weaker 7219.999+ 73, (Glenn Hauser, Sept 14, WOR iog) This report dispatched at 2040 UT September 14

Sunday, September 13 2020
** COLOMBIA. 4940, Sept 13 at 0021, JBA direct anonymous missionary station; from 0117 via Bonaire KiwiSDR: S9 and with typical AMSynch carrier offset minus 3.2 to 3.5 Hz, usual long-winded gospel huxter in Spanish citing Isaiah 11, 12. 0120 prayer and cut to produced promo for ``la película La Montaña, gratis`` via internet, usual URL which dispenses with ñ for just plain n; song; 0135 same promo again; 0320 recheck weakened to S5-S7, preacher in Spanish (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** NORTH AMERICA. 6960-USB, Sept 13 at 0024, pirate rock music S5-S6; I`m mostly monitoring on the backup PL-880 with reelout while bandscanning on the JRC, and DJ keeps interjecting brief comments the starts of which I miss until retuned on main rx. 0028 says the tune is one he has not heard before. 0034 refers to music from years 1974 & 1975; 0045 another break with Morse code; 0047 sudden CW mixing with music, partially copied as WDOG. 0048 weaker with voice ID? 0052 wild SFX; 0100 SynthYL ID over music sounds like ``Radio Station E-X-P``. Many other logs of WDOG, but none with CW IDs, nor EXP as I heard: https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,71552.0.html (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** OKLAHOMA [and non]. Area tropo levels 1-2 and barely 3 over northern OK per Hepburn maps predicted for 1500 UT September 13, so UHF/VHF bandscan via my still-broken antenna from 1507 finds the following situation, by RF channels only: OKC channels no good due to DX QRM: 33, 29, 27, 23, 18, 15, 13, 7 BAD DX signals only, not decoding: 36, 35, 32, 30, 26, 21, 11, 10, 9 DX decodes: Tulsa mkt 34, 28, 22, 20; Wichita tho beyond map area: 31 (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, WOR) ** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2051 monitoring: confirmed Sat Sept 12 at 1932 UT on WA0RCR, 1860-AM, Wentzville MO, VG S9+10 at the KiwiSDR nearby in Warrenton, about 2 minutes into, so started circa nominal 1930. Also confirmed Sat Sept 12 at 2323 the 2300 on WRMI 7780, poor S8-9 here. Also confirmed via Warrenton SDR, UT Sun Sept 13 at 0322 on WA0RCR, 1860-AM, about 3 minutes into so started circa 0319. But ending at 0347.6. Altho originally 29.0 minutes long, timing is skewed by removal of most of my opening due to music banned from ham, but WA0RCR IDs inserted every dekaminute. Next: 0030 UT Monday WRMI 7730 to WNW 0130 UT Monday WRMI 7780 to NE 0230 UT Monday WRMI 7780 to NE, 5800-NEW to SSE 0300vUT Monday WBCQ 5130v Area 51 to WSW [from Sept 21 changing to 6160v] 0330 UT Monday WRMI 9955 [jammed?] to SSE 1800vUT Monday IRRS 7290 Bulgaria to WNW, 594-Italy 0100 UT Tuesday WRMI 7780 to NE 0330 UT Tuesday WRMI 5800 NEW to SSE 2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW 0100 UT Thursday WRMI 7780 to NE Full schedule including AM, FM, webcasts, satellite, podcasts: http://www.worldofradio.com/radioskd.html Thanks this week for financial support from Robert W Gruska, Glendale NY, who has been contributing periodically since at least 2009; a PMO to Glenn Hauser, P O Box 1684, Enid OK 73702; if by check please in US funds on a US bank. Not near computer so not switching to $ tereo webfeed; probably a rerun anyway (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A [and non]. 9840, Sun Sept 13 at 1357, JBA carrier so I measure to determine if it`s still off-frequency-minus VOV scheduled until 1530? No, 9840.004, finished measuring just in time when bigsig from WHRI cuts on with no ID. The JBA one was probably Turkey scheduled here before and after 1400; per Aoki/NDXC, WHRI weekends only, supposed to be on Sundays from 1200 until off at 1400, while Saturdays extended until 1600; not so (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 1360, UT Sun Sept 13 at 0620 I`m trying for WNJC DX test on the second night, by tuning to 1361.0-USB in case I can detect some of the non-vocal SFX, and maybe I get a bit: 0623.7 JBA sweep tones briefly; 0631.7 continuous tone; 0658 one ``V`` in Morse as known to introduce the CW IDs; was it cut off? Do these match exact timings as heard by others or logged by station? FCC AM Query shows day pattern with one major lobe centered at 155 degrees --- not good for most of us. https://transition.fcc.gov/Bureaus/MB/Databases/AM_DA_patterns/503852-69972.pdf As Harold Frodge points out, here`s another version of their daytime coverage map supposedly in force during second night test, mostly going SSE out into the ocean: https://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=WNJC&service=AM&h=D (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) UNIDENTIFIED. 9-kHz, JBA MW carrier search, Sept 13 at 0607 with presumed likely sources this late: 936-Morocco, 846-Kiritimati, 684-Spain, 711-Morocco, 621-Canaries, 1107-Spain. BTW, it`s neat to be getting at same time on MW both Xmas Island and Agadir, Morocco, which are this far apart: 15051 km = 9352 statute miles = 8127 nautical miles.. The direct GC path between them passes over California, Salt Lake, Lake Superior, Newfoundland (Glenn Hauser, OK WOR) UNIDENTIFIED. 6999.9-LSB, Sept 13 at 0022, QSO in Spanish escaping the 40m band, one nicknamed Tigre; uses ham lingo like `QSL` meaning I copied you, not a card; cumpleaños greeting (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) This report dispatched at 1936 UT September 13
