** CANADA. 371-MCW kHz, Sept 18 at 0619 UT, JBA NDB dash and GW i.e.:
``371 GW CAN QC KUUJJUARAPIK 2000 55 17 5 -77 45 5`` - dxinfocentre.
A new one on me; wow, what a name! I wonder if the French Canadians
find it any more daunting than the English?

``Kuujjuarapik - Village in Québec, Canada --- Kuujjuarapik is the
southernmost northern village at the mouth of the Great Whale River on
the coast of Hudson Bay in Nunavik, Quebec, Canada. Almost 1000
people, mostly Cree, live in the adjacent village of Whapmagoostui.
The community is only accessible by air, Kuujjuarapik Airport and, in
late summer, by boat. Wikipedia`` Also seems the AP abbr is YGW, but
not in this callsign, no Y; just GW as in Great Whale. Each DX log a
potential learning experience. BTW, I do skip over a number of the
``regular`` beacons, not relogging them every time, but OTOH not
non-logging them either, once heard once (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CHAD [non]. 12050, Sept 18 at 2047, S5-S7 African language, i.e. R.
Ndarason International in Kanuri via Woofferton at 1900-2100;
understation no doubt WEWN Spanish, not a good share for either; but
then neither is hardly targeting OK (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CHINA. 13835, Sept 18 at 1357-1400, CNR1 jammer known to be here,
vs RFA Tibetan via Tajikistan; but no others audible WOOB in the 14s,
13s, 12s, 11s or 10s. 13855 Chinese, OTOH is `legit` CRI via illegit
East Turkistan, land of Uyghur persecution (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 15370, Sept 18 at 2044, no signal from RHC until cut/on unmod
S9+20 carrier at *2044.6. Supposed to be on already from 2000
Portuguese, 2030 Arabic. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** GUINEA [and non]. 9650, Sept 18 at 2040, JBA carrier, could it be
RTG? Unheard for quite a while, maybe QRP or is its only SW frequency
kaput? It was reported Aug 13 at 1710 by DJM in the British DX Club.

Aoki/NDXC shows VOK in Japanese does not start 9650 until 2100. Use it
or lose it: 9650 is also one of the frequencies planned for WIPE, the
DRM/HF trading crypto pending in NJ, as per the drmnainfo blog:

``Frequencies are stated to be 9650, 11850, 13720 and 15450 kHz. Mode
is listed as DRM with emission designator 10K0G7W (which is consistent
with 10 kHz DRM).`` Depending on the timing, other WIPE frequencies
could conflict with Romania, Turkey, etc. (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. Area tropo enhancement blob in NW OK up to Level 4, not
really extending to OKC, but only DX signal decoding via my broken
antenna is from there, Sept 18 at 0314 UT:

RF 21, KUOT, same PSIP on all subchannels tho real call is KUOT-CD:

21-1, bug in UR has a circle with arrow pointing straight down.
rabbit-ears says it`s Cornerstone
21-2, missing! r-e says should be IBN Television; what`s that?
21-3, 3ABN
21-4, no bug, Amazing Facts
21-5, Hope, UR bug with upstretched arms
All remain solid until dropping below decode level at 0333.

Meanwhile BAD DX signals showing: 10, 12, 20, 22, 28, 31, 32, 34, 36.

BTW, I`ve almost quit bandscanning above RF 37 due to progressive
repacking; but I see lots and lots of 38+ are still listed at
W9WI.com; do they really still exist? (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 9690, Fri Sept 18 at 2209, REE English VG at UTwente,
Alison with detailed critical reviews of `Don Quixote` music by Anton
Rubenstein --- finally, something about Spain, altho fantastical! DQ
finally plays at 2213, performed by Slovak Philharmonic (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

First broadcast confirmed UT Fri Sept 18 at 0130 on WRMIs direct: 5850
VG S9+30, >> 5010 S9+10 noisy.

Second broadcast confirmed Fri Sept 18 at 2200 on WRMI 9955, fair with
considerable jamming about same level at TWR Bonaire SDR. Atop but
jamming still audible at Pardinho, Brasil, and Rochester NY (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 15555-USB, Sept 18 at 1451, no signal from WJHR; recheck at
2043 can`t decide if a trace of not. The SWBC station, or rather
glorified ham rig, most likely to have been blown away by Hurricane
Sally, Milton FL near Pensacola. Seldom audible anyway. It will be of
note if anyone definitely hear it again (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** UZBEKISTAN [non]. 15310, Sept 18 at 1452, VP S6-S7 talk about even

on band]. Aoki/NDXC shows this hour only it`s R Liberty in Uzbek via
Woofferton UK (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Atlantic JBA MW carrier search, Sept 18 at

Europe: 531, 576, 585, 594, 603(2), 639, 684, 693, 738, 747, 765,

** CANADA. 223-MCW kHz, Sept 17 at 0635 UT, ND beacon dash and YYW,
1000 watts from Armstrong, Ontario.

248-MCW kHz, Sept 17 at 0639 UT, NDB dash and UL, 1000 watts from
Montréal, Québec. A new log for me, but frequently reported from
Michigan over the past sesquidecade. City-to-city distance: 2268 km =
1409 stmi.

[non]. 245-MCW kHz, Sept 17 at 0638, NO signal from YZE, Gore Bay,
Ontario, leaving FS, Sioux Falls SD in the clear; per
dxinfocentre.com, YZE was to be decommissioned on Sept 10 (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CHINA. CNR1 jammer survey, Sept 17 at 1358: none in the 13s or
higher than: 12880 S5 music, JBA carriers on 12870, 11440, 11100
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** COLOMBIA? 4940, Sept 17 past 0500, anonymous missionary station is
still going with M&W dialog, VG at Bonaire SDR. Also audible at 0622
direct S6-S7 with talk. Manuel Méndez. Lugo, Spain, points out:

``Hi, Glenn, despite the religious station on 4940 mentioning a lot of
times "Colombia", and it has programs like "Lecciones de la Historia
Colombiana", always announcing UT -4 time, instead of UT -5. Years ago
a Venezuelan station transmitted on 4940 kHz, Radio Amazonas, Puerto
Ayacucho. It is possible this religious station is using the Radio
Amazonas transmitter? The religious station is heard every day here in
Reinante, Lugo, North West of Spain with weak to very weak signal.
This weekend I will be in Friol and there I will have better
conditions to hear it. Best 73,s``

Puerto Ayacucho is right on the border with Colombia, near the NE
corner of that country, and not too far from one of the TDoA results,
Marahuaca national park, Amazonas, Venezuela (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 4980, Sept 17 at 0623, not just a JBA carrier, but VP S8-S9
of music, presumed WRMI extra frequency/transmitter, maybe on more
than exciter power, or a fluke propagational pipeline. Not // any
other WRMI frequency, mostly TOMBS. Still nothing whatsoever about
this on WRMI skedgrids --- at this hour half the 14 transmitters are
not scheduled: #2, 3, 4, 7, 9, 10, 14 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Atlantic just-barely-audible mediumwave carrier

Notable for their absence are 531 & 891, Algeria too far into dayside?
And no 846 sign of TP Kiritimati which is totally night-path, off?
*621 presumed Canary Islands (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98-CUSB, Wed Sept 16 at 1551, no signal from
LRA36 to Brasil remote, despite nominal weekly 14-16 UT schedule. Big
RAE special in Spanish, German and English is planned for Saturday
Sept 19 at 1500-2200, weather permitting (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CANADA. 395-MCW kHz, Sept 16 at 0624 UT, NDB dash and YL, which is
1600 watts from Lynn Lake, and which appears to be at the end of the
road in NW Manitoba.

401-MCW kHz, Sept 16 at 0621 UT, ND beacon dash and YPO, which is 500
watts from Peawanuck, Ontario. Must be this but had copied as YWO,
missing a dit (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** COLOMBIA? 4940, Sept 16 before 2400 UT, anonymous missionary
station is on with good signal into TWR Bonaire SDR, so since no one
else is doing it, I try TDoA direxion-finding for the first time. I am
not impressed, but maybe I am insufficiently expert in application. To
get to it, find TDoA under extensions on the player. Get the map
zoomed appropriately. Enter up to six SDRs to employ. Run it as each
tries GPS for one minute. Then algorithm gets to work.

First try comes up with -10.50, -134.50, i.e. somewhere in the S
Pacific; I think not. It seems I can`t use Bonaire itself since that
one of the three SDRs for TDoA is ``all busy`` including by me.
Another try with Vilhena western Brasil participating, comes up with
12.40, -64.60 which is Caribbean between Grenada and Curacao; Getting
warm??

Bogotá SDR is receiving a poor signal on 4940, so now I start from
there, and can bring up three closest TWRs, Bonaire, Boa Vista and DR
to do the TDoA. At 2350 these come up with 3.80, -65.60, which is
Marahuaca National Park, Amazonas, in remote S Central Venezuela! This
might be believable, not too far from Boa Vista, Brasil. But almost an
hour later at 0045 UT Sept 16, I retry with exactly same parameters
still entered, and this time it finds ``most likely`` 18.60, -63.80
which is between BVI and Anguilla.

I`m afraid Timed-Delay-of-Arrival is so unreliable,
self-contradictory, as to be useless. Anyhow, none of these tries came
up with anywhere inside Colombia. For giggles, I finally enter some
known frequencies as picked up in Bogotá: 5800 WRMI it places at 9.40,
-70.80, in Trujillo, Venezuela! 9955 WRMI at 16.20, -71.00, asea south
of DR (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 15140, Sept 16 at 1428, RHC is S9+10 but extremely suptorted
as usual, ruining the music of `Sonido Cubano`; // 15230 is only
S5-S6, undermodulated but not distorted; // 13700 is loud and clear,
lacking spurs. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. RF 7, KOCO-TV ``5``, Sept 16 at 2205 UT, surprised to
find besides local news on 5-1, its only extra channel, 5-2 is running
an acting-president Drumpf, Liar-in-Chief press conference apparently
live, instead of MeTV which per onscreen guide is supposed to be in
The Flintstones; o, if only! KOCO is Hearst-owned. Have not noticed
them putting any other live or Breaking ``news`` on 5-2 except for an
extra hour-early local news at 9 pm CT, before 5-1 does so at 10 pm
(Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** TURKEY. 9830, Wed Sept 16 at 2215, VOT and NSS RTTY add up to
S9/+20, but already in music fill, no Letterbox; 2219 ID and more
music. Cannot notch out the RTTY CCI, but I can notch out the VOT
carrier itself. Something`s always awry at Ankara, i.e. in frequency
management; and programming failures (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 395-MCW kHz, Sept 16 at 1421 UT, ND beacon CA, which is 25
watts from Newton - Harvs KS north of Wichita; still tuned here after
YL from Manitoba 8 hours earlier; not then, but now there is very weak
CCI, probably from ULS, 395, Ulysses in western KS (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2051 monitoring: confirmed, JBA in HNL, Wed
Sept 16 at 2127 the 2100 on WBCQ 7490v.

Also confirmed UT Thu Sept 17 at 0100 on WRMI 7780, fair at UTwente.

Next WOR 2052 should be ready by early UT Fri Sept 18 for first
broadcast at 0130 on WRMIs 5850 & 5010 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Atlantic JBA MW carrier search Sept 16 at 0614 UT:

** ARGENTINA [non]. 9395, Sept 15 at 2131, RAE via WRMI is listed as
Italian this hour, but since COVID-19 hit, each language hour could be
filled by bits in any or all of their 8 languages, which explains why
they are in English now talking about the 100th anniversary of the
first radio broadcast on August 27, which presented Wagner`s
`Parsifal` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** COLOMBIA. New VOA relay via HJHJ 600: see separate post headed
VENEZUELA [non]

** COLOMBIA. 4940, Sept 16 at 0115, quick check for anonymous new
missionary station, via TWR Bonaire SDR, after concentrating on 600,
finds a JBA signal here, probably only the Peruvian. No TDOA tonight
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 15370, Sept 15 at 2112, RHC Spanish is suptorted/JBM; wiggle
that patchcord! Something`s always wrong at RHC. I am beginning to
suspect sabotage somewhere along the line from studio to STL to
transmitter to monitoring; someone preventing clear distribution of
Commie propaganda. Or maybe just low morale, don`t-give-a-damn
attitude. All it takes is one weakest link (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ITALY. 14222-USB, Sept 15 at 2115, IZ0GYR, Antonio in Rome, CQ 20,

breaking thru in American English, so must be CRI relay, altho now
supposed to be toward end of sesquihour in Arabic. Wiggle that
patchcord (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

2222 COVID PSA; while at 2248 direct to here I find it S5-S6 poor
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [non]. 9740, Tue Sept 15 at 2128, too-well-e-nun-ci-a-ted Q&A
about where`s the A-mer-i-can room in a mu-se-um, i.e. a language
lesson, S7-S9 in English only: ``Go down-stairs, then turn right...``
and chopped off the air at 2129.5*, leaving us hanging. It`s VOA
French via Woofferton UK, supposedly at 2100-2130 M-F only. Don`t
blame Encompass for the chop, but VOA where it no longer matters to
match programming to SW transmission times (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Glenn Hauser logs: new VOA via Colombia 600 to Venezuela  View Printable Version
Wednesday, September 16 2020

Hauser
** VENEZUELA [non]. You may recall that VOA has been trying to get
into Venezuela via a MW transmitter in an adjacent country. Guyana was
approached some 6 months ago about using a 560 kHz relay, but VOA was
turned down. TWR Bonaire, which owes the USA something for licensing
KTWR Guam, would seem the obvious choice, but they must have higher
priorities for 800 kHz, at least during prime time.

On September 11, Don Moore informed me: ``COLOMBIA - Starting next
week VOA Spanish programs for Venezuela will be relayed on 600 kHz
(listed 50 kW) via Radio Libertad in Barranquilla, Colombia. The
broadcasts are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. on September 15th, or 0000
UTC September 16th. The schedule I received shows the relays as being
three hours long Monday to Friday (local days) and two hours long on
Saturday and Sunday. (VOA via Don Moore)``

So I`m all set to monitor this début via remotes in the area. Before
0000, none of them are any good for 600 kHz except TWR Bonaire, where
I noticed there is also someone in Barinas, Venezuela tuned to 600:

600 kHz, Sept 15 at 2353 UT, sounds like a preacher in Spanish, with
QRM. But at 0000 Sept 16, Radio Rebelde is mostly dominant, no VOA
heard yet. There are basically two stations mixing. On the Key West
SDR I compare to 5025, distorted Rebelde, and find no match at first,
but then I can hear a match in the background of 600, and the
foreground talk is about Venezuela.

600 would not seem a very good choice, but at least there are no YVs
on it -- yet; there may not have been (m)any other options, and R.
Libertad is a good 50 kW. Nearest major competitor may be 40 kW in
Guayaquil, Ecuador. Barranquilla is 863 km = 536 statute miles from
Caracas, with Maracaibo about midway. At distancefromto.net if you
enter Caracas, Venezuela, looking closely at the map, that merely
reaches the west end of Caracas? province, near where the map is
labeled Carabobo. You have to enter ``Caracas, Caracas, Venezuela`` to
get to the capital city. The path is unfortunately all over-land since
Bqa is on the NW coast. But this will be relying on skywave.

How does that compare to the CubaRM? R. Rebelde on 600 is in the east,
San Germán, Holguín, at 1494 km = 928 statute miles = 807 nautical
miles from Caracas; and its bearing is NW from there. Venzies with
direxional radios may be able to null it and get mostly HJHJ/VOA. Is
it not convenient that this ``opposition`` service is already named
Radio Libertad, but that`s coincidental as it goes way back deriving
from the Bqa newspaper La Libertad:
https://cadenaradiallalibertad.com.co/sitio/

Guess what, I don`t see anything about hooking up with VOA on its
website, nor is there any specific program schedule to be seen.

Resuming what I am axually able to hear on 600: at 0016, Rebelde is
dominant // 5025 as VOA fades; 0022 RR music // 5025 via KW. 0027
``VOA Noticias`` definitely heard, 0028 again concerning Venezuela;
0031 VOA ID, ``una producción de La Voz de America``.

At 0049 I`ve brought up the ``listen live`` link here, first of seven
stations
https://cadenaradiallalibertad.com.co/sitio/radios/
and there is the VOA relay loud & clear, with program ID ``Buenos
Dias, America`` --- so it`s anything but live! Rather played back from
the morning some 12 hours ago. 0101 concluding that program, with ID
again, and now also for ``600 AM, en Barranquilla, emsisora afiliada
con sistema de noticias de la VOA``; Then own callsign ID as ``HJHJ,
50 mil vatios...`; at 0114 another joint ID. Perhaps they have now
switched to the less stale tarde VOA program, `El Mundo al Día`, also
available as a 32-minute podcast, but archive shows M-F only, as
nothing ever happens on weekends.

VOA website does not say anything about this either that I can find,
but you can get their program audios --- are there any others left in
Spanish?

https://www.voanoticias.com/radio-buenos-dias-america
https://www.voanoticias.com/radio-mundo-al-dia
``Radio en vivo`` is NOT live, but the latest 32-minute episode:

https://www.voanoticias.com/episode/el-mundo-al-dia-noticiero-voz-de-america-radio-237606

And o yes, specifically for/about Venezuela, basically a TV show, but
audio-only also available and surely filling some of the 600 hours, in
fact probably what initiated this service at 0000:
