Sunday, August 28 2022
** ALGERIA [and non]. 17600, Aug 28 at 0042, S0/S2 algo M&W conversation, Arabic? Yes, a bit better signal switching from E/W loop to shortwire N/S. Got to be TDA which has been testing 17600 mostly in daytime, now overnight. About to declare it the OSOB until tuning down across Chinese on 17560 at S1/S2 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** BRAZIL. 9664.987, Aug 28 at 0614, RVM with S4/S6 music, notably very close to nominal 9665 lately! And fairly stable. Measured for the record (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CHINA. 17560, Aug 28 at 0045, Chinese at S1/S2: VOA Philippines sked this hour so probably CNR1 jammer. JBA Chinese? on 17490, which would be CRI Beijing site in Cantonese. Nothing on the 18 MHz band nor circa 16 MHz, but 14920 at 0047, JBA fluttery, CNR1 jammer against Sound of Hope (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 13680, Aug 27 at 2215. RHC Spanish S6/S7 but suptorted = suppressed and distorted modulation; something`s always wrong at RHC. But 13740 is VG S9 with normal mod (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 15140, Sunday Aug 28 at 1412, RHC S9+10 but suptorted as `Mundo de la Filatelia` is starting. Still good on 13700 but spurblobless. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** EGYPT [and non]. 9440, Aug 27 at 2118 into UTwente, no signal from R. Cairo in English, nor after 2200. When on, it`s horrible. 9900, Aug 27 at 2220 direct, S2/S5 with large wobble/warble of frequency, presumed R. Cairo Portuguese to Brasil as scheduled. But at 2236 into UTwente, steady no w/w but just barely modulated on 9899.957+. At 2300 a close-to-accurate timesignal is audible. Goes off at 2316* leaving a weaker signal close to 9900.000+. That would be the China/Taiwan radio war. Cairo PP service is scheduled 2215-2330; and next, 2330- in Arabic on 9885, but nothing heard there. Something`s always egregious in Egypt (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** NIGERIA [and non]. 7254.9+, Aug 28 at 0616, VON is on at S9/+10 but undermodulated. Wolfgang Büschel was simulmonitoring: ``7254.934, Today Sun Aug 28 only empty carrier on air, when checked at 0610 UT in NoAM, like Rochester-NY and Massachusetts remote SDR's. S=8 at peaks, regular S=/ signal these days at this hour. At 06-07 UT Hausa lang px is scheduled. Now around 0625 UT some WeAF folk mx instrument to be heard, BUT ONLY 5 % modulation level, I'd to switch off the AGC control and set the audio level manually. 73 wolfy df5sx https://www.wwdxc.de/swl.pdf`` How does one measure % modulation level on an SDR? Or is it just a guess by ear? 7254.933v, Aug 28 at 1700 into Canary SDR, trace at S3/S5 including noise level, hardly anything audible to ear, but must be VON on off-frequency. 1729 recheck however, no carrier there, so has disappeared leaving an even weaker one within 3 Hz of 7255.000 --- that would be until 1805, PBS Xizang, TIBET occupied by the ChiCom. 1755 recheck, VON is back on offset channel, and built up to S8/9+10 about Abuja traffic. Manuel Méndez, Spain, says it cut off abruptly, again, at 1813. I check at 1854: VON is *on again* with music peaking S9+15. 1857 ``more music at nbc.com``; wrapup, 1958 drum/flute IS just as that big low audible het hits from CRI Turkish, ruining both of them. Only occasional chex here since I`m mainly listening to `Pipedreams` on WYSU stream at 17-19 UT Sundays (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** NORTH AMERICA. 6960 AM, Aug 28 at 0024 & 0038, pirate music JBA vs HSNL. JBA carrier at 0048. Many reports here say it`s WDOG: https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,101164.0.html (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** NORTH AMERICA. 6925 USB, Aug 28 at 0025, pirate music and DJ, S7/S9 including HSNL; 0038 & 0048 chex, SSTV beepery. Including images, these say it`s Bad Dog but none later than 0020: https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,101161.0.html Long after I quit, further 6925s reported as WWWW Radio and Two Dog (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** TURKEY. 9830.018+, Aug 27 at 2200, VOT English is on with VG signal into UTwente, but the squealing transmitter, enough excuse to skip it today. Something`s always erroneous at Emirler (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. Re: 395 kHz, NDB CA at Newton/Harvs KS: ``Hi Glenn - What about the following? The city of Newton is in Harvey County - named for James Madison Harvey (September 21, 1833 – April 15, 1894). He was a US senator from Kansas and fifth Governor of Kansas. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_M._Harvey_(politician) Ron`` Howard, CA Makes as much sense as EI Enid being nicknamed ``Garfy`` for Garfield County, named for a president. ``Garfy`` is never heard in any other context among inhabitants. While looking that up at https://rxx.classaxe.com/en/rna/signals I also note the periods of the three on 341 kHz, in seconds to three decimal places, presumably the intervals between the start of one ID loop and start of the next one, regardless of the length of each MCW. Note that EI Enid and OIN Oberlin are almost the same, so it would take quite a while to go thru a complete cycle of total CCI and total alternation. Perhaps a mathematician can come up with the formula. Periods: EI 7.931, DNI 5.319, OIN 7.79 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2153 monitoring: confirmed UT Sunday August 28 at 0030 on WRMI 7780, S6/S9, the first few seconds marred by a noise burst which keeps happening, now after the Allen Graham Ecuador ID. Also confirmed UT Sunday August 28 at 0414 starting about an hour late on WA0RCR, 1860 AM, MO, S9+15/22 into nearby SDR with storm crashes. Next: 2000 UT Sunday IRRS 1323 & 918? & 207?-Italy 0030 UT Monday WRMI 7780 to SW 0300vUT Monday WBCQ Area 51 6160v to WSW 0030 UT Tuesday WRMI 9395 to NNW 2230 UT Tuesday WRMI 9955 to SSE [jammed by Cuba] 2330 UT Tuesday WRMI 9395 to NNW 1030 UT Wednesday WRMI 5850 to NW 2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW 0030 UT Thursday WRMI 9395 to NNW 0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S Full schedule including AM, FM, webcasts, satellite, podcasts: http://www.worldofradio.com/radioskd.html A noncommercial service for which financial support is appreciated to Glenn Hauser, P O Box 1684, Enid OK 73702, by money order or check on a US bank. Or via PayPal, not necessarily in US funds, to woradio at yahoo.com (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 9330.185V, Aug 27 at 2222, WLCR/WBCQ is S9/+10 in English, and slightly wavering, furthest off-frequency yet. I`m no expert on transmitters or their drivers, but what I don`t get is why they don`t come with ``fine-tuning`` capability, just like receivers. Of course someop would still have to be responsible for keeping them zeroed. Or why not AFC = automatic frequency control? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 9330v, Aug 28 at 1415, WBCQ/WLCR is OFF. What`s the problem now? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 7489.9, Aug 28 at 0020, the Akron guy from Summit Radio with his `Cruisin` the Decade` show on WBCQ. i.e. during one hour, 10 songs from each of the past 10 decades. He talx a lot about them too and really seems to know his subject, but limited to the narrow genre of US pop music, apparently. At 0032 says he`s on 20 stations, mostly AM & FM including CKLB-FM 101.9 in Yellowknife N[W]T, which WTFDA FM database shows as a 234-watt aboriginal station, ``The Voice of Denedeh`` with a country [sic] format; and also with long-range coverage via SW, Channel 292 in Germany, the WBCQ ``mega-transmitter`` [sic] in Maine, and WRMI; and greets some listeners who heard him on each. 0035 plays a song from 1982y and reaches the current decade by 0053 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 5085, UT Sun Aug 28 at 0036 & 0054, still no `Theater Organ Under the Arch` as supposedly scheduled around 0030, rather a ham YL with Q&A such as, should I ever climb a tower alone? NO (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 9475, Aug 28 at 1545, NO signal from WTWW-1, once prime time for Sunday morning disservice by passé Pastor Pete Peters. So is this transmitter totally out of air, nor 5830 evenings? Nor have I run across WTWW on 9940 lately, whichever #transmitter that may have been, the ``Ukraine`` service ``Voice of Freedom``, which also sometimes used to be referred to on 5085 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** VANUATU [non]. 11835, Aug 28 at 0618, JBA carrier, surely too weak to be RV X 3, so maybe China now? No harmonic JBA carrier on 7890 at all (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) This report dispatched at 1953 UT August 28 _ Hard-Core-DX mailing list Hard-Core-DX@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/hard-core-dx http://www.hard-core-dx.com/

Sent: Saturday, August 27, 2022 9:56 PM Subject: [HCDX] Glenn Hauser logs August 27, 2022NIGERIA [and non]. 7254.9+, Aug 27 at 0616, VON is on again, S9/+10 direct, undermodulated Hausa. At 1655 into Canary SDR, 7255- is on but VP S5 vs S7 storm crashes, 1700 ID and news, SAM frequency as 7254.9335v. 1804 recheck, now much better at S9/+10, news mostly readable. 1810 program ID as "Africa Hour" so continental content. 1825 about desertification. 1832 plugs various apps for reaching VON. 1848 about economy, but modulation stops, then fades back up, studio error? Much depends on how heavy the accent of various voices: the anchorette is bestte, sorta mid-Atlantic. I guess Nigerians can cope with English variously accented depending on the original native language. Nigeria is now the only African country even attempting an external SW service in English, so VON should be valued, treasured - disregarding egregious Egypt. And also dissing gospel huxters originating or relaying. Plus disregarding various 'target' broadcasts into Africa. Signal into Canary should be much better if it's really 250 kW aimed moreorless thataway. At 1852, UTwente gets nothing usable, just DRM? noise but does lock onto 7254.934. No DRM EiBi listed closer than 7245 RRI Saftica at 18-19. Back to Canary, hit *1857 by on-frequency 7255.0 big carrier as she is upwrapping Africa Hour. 1858 drum & flute IS still audible under it. 1900 CRI theme for Turkish hour from far Kunming, now with horrible low het, both unusable as VON presumably goes into Fulfulde as scheduled 1900-2000 on 11770 like preceding English was supposed? to be as in Aoki. At UTwente, Turkish clear with no QRM. BTW, current EiBi lists nothing for VON. ** ANTARCTICA [and non]. 15475.98 RCUSB, Sat Aug 27 at 1435 tune-in via LU4AA remote, nothing yet, but 1441 recheck, LRA36 is already underway with tangos; 1443 ``más austral``, ``Radio Nacional, nos une`` canned ID, more music. 1459 sign-on with staff list; talking about Patagonia. 1501 another sign-on, the multilingual one; 1503 the Antártida song.
1505 the LU4AA remote craps out, can`t access it anymore, so try all the others in Argentina, Uruguay, Brasil. No LUs as good as 4AA was. Best left is PT2HFC, Brasília #1 which employs Arnie`s favorite antenna, T2FD: Tilted Terminated Folded Dipole: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T2FD_antenna 1510 music, 1512 ID, music, live greetings by YL to the 18th program of 2022. 1514 mentions ``día de la radiodifusión``, today = 102nd anniversary of broadcasting in [my joke] Alta Antártida = Argentina, as previously publicized to be celebrated all weekend by 49 or 50 stations nationwide. 1521 fade-out, or off? 1535 resuming with sign-on ``A partir de...``, brief extraneous talk like 2-way QRM? Back to YLs, mentioning something happening in 1952y, history stuff. 1537 contact info platforms, 1538 music. 1541 refers to 27 de agosto de 1920; 1546 tango. 1549 about ``Horacio Guarany`` [pseudo.], Argentine singer *1925-2017* https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horacio_Guarany https://youtu.be/1ZaRCC_e3W0 YLs chatting, becoming JBA, 1552 joined by OM voice. 1603 best reception now via Pardinho, Brasil with a G5RV antenna. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G5RV_antenna At 1609 I notice that Bruce Churchill, Carlsbad CA, is also on PT2HFC SDR. Off by 1611, just as well as since 1606, I`m mainly listening to KUCO for `The Score`, this week filmusic from summer blockbusters. Missed first airing Friday at 19-20 UT while out & about. BTW, at 1650 briefly some tango-like tune there. Bruce Churchill later reports: ``So, LRA-36 15475.98 on this morning at 1540 tune with nice S3 signal from PT2HFC SDR in Brasilia – woman commentator, ID’s by man (probably recorded), usual good Argentinian music. ID by man at 1616 and then nominally off (although a strange music segment for about 5 sec or so was heard at 1617) and then xmtr shutdown. Signal faded to S2 after about 1550-1555. Checked my favorite Iceland site at Bjangtangar, but nothing heard there. Normally LRA-36 needs to be on later for Iceland to get a decent signal. Bruce`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 6060, Aug 27 at 0621, only RHC English still on, S9+20 undermodulated. 5040 still on with Spanish, music. ** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98 RCUSB, Aug 26 at 1500-1538, no signal from LRA36 into Argentine or Uruguayan SDRs; in case it would try on Friday having failed on Wednesday. But it could be later circa 1800 instead. No, nothing at 1829 check Friday Aug 26.
Also, LRA36 is specifically mentioned as among 50 stations participating in a 102nd anniversary of R. Nacional event all weekend from 23 UT Friday Aug 26 until 0259 UT Monday Aug 29, but doubt the SW will be continuous for 52 hours, if at all: https://www.red43.com.ar/nota/2022-8-24-9-6-54-radio-nacional-cumple-102-anos-y-lo-celebra-con-una-transmision-historica A different version via Arnaldo Slaen, condiglist, says each of 49 stations gets 1 hour each, instead of 50 - not mentioning LRA36, so deliberately excluding it? Other fundamentals, 6000 & 6165, are off by now. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** NIGERIA. 7255-, Aug 26 at 0627, VON is gone again. Nor any signal into Canary SDR at 1709; nor 11770- with something in Chinese. With my yesterday`s report I meant to add: had not axually been able to listen to VON in English for longtime: sounds well-produced so it`s a shame they make it so hard to hear (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** SPAIN. 17855, Fri Aug 26 at 2200, token English from REE; after news, 2205 feature by Amy Egan interviewing someone about a museum collexion of love and personal letters by great artists, staring with Matisse. VG into Maryland SDR and at 2224 checking same Kiwi on other frequencies: 15520 & 11940 almost as good; 11670 only S8 still with squeal. Hasta el lunes (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** TURKEY. 9830, Aug 26 at 2201, VOT with VG modulation and S9+45/50 signal into UTwente. 2215.5 from `Review of the Tuerkiyeish Press` to `Weekly Analysis` written by some professor whose name we can`t possibly copy, about changes in Erdogan`s policy toward Syria. 2227.5 the multi-lingual ID reel with music background, as most of them have been forced to utter ``Türkiye``, whatever the language. Aside from that, it would be an interesting exercise for the experienced DXer to try to identify each, if not live, then from a `perfect` recording as could have been captured today. We can ID lots of languages without speaking or understanding many of them, by their `sound` and/or key words in IDs for ``this is``, not always literally translated, e.g. Russian, govorit = speaks. Toughest for us would be distinguishing among several Turkic languages on TRT, and Slavix. 2233, `Feeling Supreme` theme; BTW, I heard similar music on some US TV commercial, and wonder what it is, from some produxion-music album? Subtitle is hard to understand by the accented announcer, but I think he says ``Healthy Life`` --- this time, natural remedies for the ``disease`` of varicose veins, starting with: #1, apple cider vinegar [mispronounced ``sih-der``, short I]; #2, sage; #3, hard chestnut? something. Not at all sure how valid and trustworthy TRT`s health advice be, but maybe should pay more attention to this topic. Then mostly music as I switch to direct reception, which is much inferior, S9 with deep fades to S6. At least there is no RTTY USB. After s/off, 2255 starts IS; 2256 restarts IS and gets the German ID out twice, but chopped off the air at 2257.5* as the third one starts (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** UKRAINE [non]. (7730), UR1 via WRMI, Aug 26 after 0500, `Ukraine: Security Issue` copied later from web archive, well-spoken YL, http://www.nrcu.gov.ua/images/ckeditor/files/files/ENG_NEWS_25_08_22.mp3 including, for Aug 25: entering 7th month of invasion. Railway station shelled, 25 killed, and more. On Independence Day, 58 settlements shelled, 189 air raid sirens sounded nationwide during 14 hours, most yet. Electricity and water out in Zap. region. Cages for U POW trials by R installed, start date unknown, Sept 15? Occupiers conducting census in Mariupol, pseudo-referendum, but U blew up HQ of R occupiers. U armed forces liberated area size of Denmark, 45,000 sq km. Pres. Biden announced nearly 3 gigadollars in new military aid. Tennis match benefit for U raised more than megadollar in NY; more planned at US Open from Aug 29 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2153 monitoring: confirmed first SWBCs, UT Friday August 26 at 0130 on WRMIs: to Maryland SDR, 7730 S9+10/15; 5850 S7/S9, the lower/latter much better thisaway direct. Also confirmed UT Friday August 26 at 0330 on WRMI 7780, VP/JBA direct. Also confirmed Friday August 26 at 1430 on WRMI 9955, JBA direct, can barely recognize WOR theme; unusually weak, no jamming. At least it`s on the air unlike 24 hours ago. Also confirmed Friday August 26 from 1815.2 on IRRS via AM Italia, 1323 kHz, Villa Estense, S9/+15 atop some CCI music and German from Romania`s minority service. Until 1844 music and IRRS ID again. Also on IRRS via Bulgaria 7290 at S9 into UTwente. Also monitoring just before: 1323 with bit of classical music at 1754, and never anything on 918 or 207 kHz; 1756 to pop song in English. 1800 IRRS SW sign-on, Feature Story News on 1323. As ever, 7290 does not cut on until 1800:50 or so, JIP FSN. This was once explained to me as caused by unavailability or program feed routing from studio to site a minute earlier than that. 1805 ID and UN news. 1809 music fill. 1811 ``Country Jamboree``; 1814 the DJ says there is half an hour to go, o yeah? And then ``welcome to the show``, or a different one? Chopped off at 1815 for IRRS ID and into WOR. 1844 bit of music, IRRS ID, novelty songs; 1846 DJ as ``Sounds of ---`` something. Barely missed checking the repeat at 2030 Fri Aug 26 on 1323 only, out shopping with too-slow checkout line; but probably. Anyone hear it? Checking 1323 anyway at 2115, weaker music, maybe else. Or via PayPal, not necessarily in US funds, to woradio at yahoo.com (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. (7489.9v), Aug 27 at 0000, WBCQ webcast of `AAAWWW`, first interjexion is ``what?!``. Then ``the not-so-jolly roger``, plugging as the ``last bastion of free speech``; and finally, ``carbon`` near end of William Tell Overture. Goes right into playing some song about the good old AM radio, analog days. Sounds like a non-rerun, live from Florida. Meanwhile, I check Maryland SDR: also // but not synch on 6160-, 5130-, but nothing on 3265+. By 0009 already, he can`t help but blame Democrats for BCQ needing money; and FBI for screwing up elexion, huh??? Suspend. And he seems to be justifying storming of the Capitol. ``Aren`t you glad we haven`t been on the air for a while, folx?`` He doesn`t like any government involvement in broadcasting, such as NPR, VOA. Near end someone on email complains about all the politicking, sorry, he says. Free Radio Weekly just in but only mentions names of a few stations reported before prayer and finishing (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 1010 kHz, Aug 26 at 0615 UT, bigsig where normally nothing is very dominant at night, ads citing area code 904, ID sounds like ``KNSL`` and FM 92.5, then sports talk. Per new NRC AM Log, this has to be WJXL, Jaxonvil Beach FL, U4 50/30 kW. Night and day patterns are very similar from 6-tower array, almost everything eastward into ocean, hardly anything westward from site W of Jax closer to Macclenny per radio-locator also with maps. R-L ``coverage`` maps seem to show coastal/seawater gain to the east, Day: https://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=WJXL&service=AM&h=D Night: https://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=WJXL&service=AM&h=N But FCC maps show true nominal radiation patterns are really extremely direxional eastward. Day pattern: https://transition.fcc.gov/Bureaus/MB/Databases/AM_DA_patterns/24553dcdb4194a28ac60c1b6063ebeb7-100905.pdf night pattern: https://transition.fcc.gov/Bureaus/MB/Databases/AM_DA_patterns/24553dcdb4194a28ac60c1b6063ebeb7-100906.pdf Anyway, bigsig a kilomile westward has got to be on 30 or even 50 kW non-direxional. Do they have an STA? Or could it be so out of whack that it`s direxional westward oppositely? A reply on the IRCA iog Aug 26: ``Glenn, WJXL has been a big signal in Central Texas for a while now, I hear them nightly, thanks. James Niven, Austin, Texas`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** VANUATU. 11835, Aug 26 at 0627, for the record, still no signal from R.
