** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98-CUSB, Aug 19 at 1445, it`s Wednesday so
another regular broadcast of LRA36 should be underway from 1400. Not a
trace direct but that`s normal now. But via Brazilian SDR, not a trace
either at tune-in 1453 or so, but I keep listening as it suddenly pops
on --- I think, rather than fading in --- at *1456 with music and talk
only S2; mostly chat past 1505; 1515 song; 1522 canned ID as ``La
Radio Pública``, 1523 contact info with phone numbers, emails; 1525
into historical talk about San Martín doing something on 17 de agosto
de 1850, unlikely anything about Antarctica, past 1530 now peaking S5;
mostly talk but 1553 song; 1556.5 ID and music; 1600.5 ``continuamos
con Corazón Antártico``, chat; 1610 mentions pandemia, 1617 song,
1622* off abruptly. I had notified the WOR iog at 1519, but no one
else reported it: guess RNASG is getting to be ho-hum, at least unless
we can DX it directly. Presumably will resume circa 1630 this Saturday
unlike last week (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CHINA. CNR1 jammer survey Aug 19 at 1353-1400: none in 16s; in the
15s against VOA Thailand, Philippines, respectively on 15165, 15130,
but not surely confirmed whether jammer or not; most rest JBA carriers
except better Chinese audible*: 13835*, 13130, 13070, 13020 12210,
12190, 11460, 11440, 11150, 11120*, 11100, 10920, 9300, 9280*, 9215
until timesignal and off 9300 a few sex after 1400*. Inband 11 & 9 MHz
not checked (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** MALI. 5995, Aug 18 at 2325, VP signal squeezed between Cuba and
Cuba, ORTM as scheduled until 2400, checking after reported coup; will
it stay on all night? Not at 0116 August 19 check. Manuel Méndez,
Spain, reported at 0629: ``5995 open today at about its usual time
0550 with African songs, but at 0600, instead of interval signal,
identification in French and comments as usual, no comments, no news,
only non stop African songs. Best 73,s Manuel``. Day frequency to
check is 9635. And will this affect the CRI Bamako relays? (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NICARAGUA [non?]. 8989-USB, Aug 18 at 2317, JBA sounds like Spanish
gospel huxter know-it-all intonation, i.e. the unlicensed?
fisher/preacher associated with shores of this country, only S2-S3,
equivalent to the noise level (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NIGERIA. 7254.9, Aug 19 at 0626, VON is S9/+10 but JBM (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 9830, Aug 18 at 2215, VOT English is VP here, but VG at
UTwente and Maine SDRs (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 6159.9, Aug 18 at 2309, `Old Tyme Radio` on Area 61 via WBCQ
with Jean Shepherd but only S3-S5, so webcast required if at all. J.S.
episodes lead off each program this week (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 15610, Aug 18 at 2312, WEWN English getting an HF sporadic E
boost to S9 instead of JBA, better even than 12050 WEWN Spanish.
Anyhow, confirmed on the air today (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Atlantic JBA MW carrier search, Aug 19 at 0152 on
R75 and longwire so no DFing, the first one may not be Cuba: 711, 891,
936(2), 1044, 1053, 1089, 1107, 1125, 1134, 1215(2), 1296, 1306.

At 0615 Aug 19 I am still getting only: 711, 846(surely Kiritimati
TP), 882, 936 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CANADA. Altho there is still some storm noise, Blitzortung shows
only small spots on fringes of conterminous USA, far from here with
quietude in the Great Center, so with LW overall noise level abated,
Aug 18 at 0639-0647 UT I can relog a number of Canadian ND beacons as
well as Unitedstatesians, q.v.:

326-MCW, dash and YQK, 200 watts from Kenora, Ontario
332-MCW, dash and QT under IC Wichita, 1000 watts Thunder Bay, Ont.
346-MCW, dash and YXL, stronger, 500 watts from Sioux Lookout, Ont.
366-MCW, dash and YMW, 500 watts from Maniwaki, Quebec
382-MCW, dash and YPL, 1000 watts from Pickle Lake, Ontario

In reverse order as I was really downtuning (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CHINA. CNR1 jammer survey, Aug 18 from 1444: 14850 JBA carrier,
none in 13s/12s until 12550 Chinese poor; 12210, 12190, 11460, 11440,
11120, 11100 all JBA carriers, 10870 VP Chinese. AND: good 15110 which
list-loggers would assume is VOA but confirmed // CNR1 on WOOB 12550.
Inband 13, 11 and 9 MHz not checked (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 515-MCW kHz, Aug 18 at 0634 UT, NDB PN Ponca City is
still off; 314-MCW EI Enid is still on nearby but JBA (Glenn Hauser,
Enid, WOR)

** PUERTO RICO. 391-MCW kHz, Aug 18 at 0638 UT, DDP among the US &
Canadian ND beacons, qq. vv.; it`s 1000 watts from San Juan - Dorado.
I was tuned to 389-USB. Logged previously, rarely in Jan & March this
year. 3676 km = 2284 statute miles (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY [and non]. 9830, Aug 17 at 2200, VOT timesignal about 0.5
second behind WWV, YL s/on claiming this be the 1230 broadcast on
15450! with heavy NSS RTTY QRM, still both at 2218. Something`s always
awry at Ankara (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. Lowered LW noise level allows some ND beacon logs again,
from CANADA, q.v., and, Aug 18 at 0635-0646 UT, in reverse order from
really tuning downward:

335-MCW, BV, 25 watts from Batesville - Almond, Arkansas
347-MCW, AFK, 25 watts from Nebraska City, Nebraska
365-MCW, AA, 100 watts, Fargo - Harwood, North Dakota, tuned 363-USB
389-MCW, DDP --- oops, see PUERTO RICO!
420-MCW, PK, 25 watts from Olathe - Herbb, Kansas
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. (6159.9), Aug 17 at 2300, Area 51/61 WBCQ webcast starts
their new block of ``old tyme radio programs`` with Jean Shepherd`s
stream-of-consciousness including how Maine is like a different
country. Fun to hear him again, and once started, how can you stop?
Runs about 50 minutes. On Aug 15 we got this from WBCQ, too late to
mention on WOR 2047; to start Aug 17, and weeks to come?

``Hi Glenn, Hope you are doing well. Allan & Angela Weiner along with
Larry and Jane Will are presenting old tyme radio programs on our 6160
Khz transmitter. Monday-Friday 7pm-9pm eastern time {23-01 UT}

UNIDENTIFIED. Cursory trans-Atlantic JBA MW carrier check Aug 18 at
0122: two on 684 kHz, Spain being the one off-frequency; 891 no doubt
Algeria, but no 711 at this time.

From 0327: 531, 621, 684, 693, 774, 855(2), 898, 1098(2), 1107*
strongest, 1215, 1305; and 711.0, so is that Cuba or not? No DFing.

At 0630, JBA carrier about 710.4, not 711. Months ago, Steve Wiseblood
in the RGV presumed he was getting Rebelde on 710.5 but I never did.
Also 621 presumed Canary, 846 Kiritimati/Pacific, maybe 1098,
Marshalls.

WOR iog discussion of my previous log: ``CUBA [and non]. 711.0, Aug 17
at 0602, JBA het presumably one of the Radios Rebeldes knocked
off-frequency again like a few months ago. Something`s always wrong at
RadioCuba. Too weak to get DF on it, but the only TA carrier this late
is 621 presumed Canary Islands (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)``

``When nearby 621 kHz from Canary Islands could be heard easily in
North America, why not the 711 kHz Moroccon transmission too?

Right 3 kilometers distance to the Atlantic Ocean coastline.

``Maybe SNRT antenna is too directional in El Aaiún. But I don't know
how it is behaving in practice. I also have no idea if the EMWG data
is valid or not today. In the former Euro-African Medium Wave Guide
(EMWG), the following data were:

711 kHz: AOE - SNRT Al-Idaâ al-Amazighia (El-Aaiún), El Aaiún (300,
directional 180°) - 24h in Tamazight (Berber), Tachelhit, Rifain,
Arabic exc. when local programmes are on air: Mo-Th 1800-1900 Arabic,
Fr 1800-2300 Arabic, Sat 0000-0200 Arabic, Sat 1800-2300 Arabic, Sun
1000-1300 Arabic, Sun 1800-0200 Arabic; relay of SNRT El-Aaiún: Fr-Sa
2200-2300 Arabic; Mon 0900-1300 Rabat programme; local ID "Maghribiyya
Laayoune"; very low audio - offset frequency of 710.9970 kHz (Tibor
Gaal, Hungary)``

Months ago when Cuba was skewed before, we had this same problem. If
it`s too weak to DF, another way to rule out Eurafrica is hearing it
later when it`s daytime there, still dark between here and Cuba, so
when I rouse circa 0900 UT Aug 18, quick check hears nothing above
710, so inconclusive. Need further chex (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Pacific JBA MW carrier search, August 18 at 1151
UT, on the DX-398 so DFing: 657, 792 and 1008 all WSW; two? on 1242.
Enid LSR 1152, so almost too late but that was when I happened to
awaken. All of these have NZ or eastern Australia possibilities, under
50 kW except for one. Then a check of lowband 10-kHz channels for
Mexicans found none (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CHINA. CNR1 jammer survey, Aug 17 at 1414, after most of them have
evaporated at 1400 --- below 15 MHz, no WOOBs found until 11120 JBA
Chinese, 11100 & 10920 JBA carriers (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA [and non]. 711.0, Aug 17 at 0602, JBA het presumably one of
the Radios Rebeldes knocked off-frequency again like a few months ago.
Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba. Too weak to get DF on it, but
the only TA carrier this late is 621 presumed Canary Islands (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 12200, Aug 17 at 0624, RHC English in mailbag from Utah,
S6-S9 from much stronger fundamental 6100. Something`s always wrong at
RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** KIRITIMATI. 846 kHz, Aug 17 at 0609, JBA carrier but with some
decent peaks, surely R. Kiribati, Xmas Island and not Europe, whence
this late the only TA carrier trace is 621 Canary/Africish. 846, 10 kW
is the closest TP split-frequency station, and it`s already well after
dark there; and anyway there are no Europeans on 846 more than 3 kW.
Additionally I get a rough DX-398 DF as closer to E/W than NE/SW. True
bearing is 252 degrees, distance only 4500 miles, and due south of
Hawaii, in the *western* hemisphere. As measured on my trusty NGS
globe.

Neither gaisma.com nor distancefromto.net can cope with the fact that
*this* part of Kiribati, the Line Islands, is *far* removed from the
main part to the west, giving out false readings for London,
Kiritimati as if it were on HQ island Tarawa, 6114 miles away and with
local time as UT+12 instead of +14! LSS varies only half an hour over
the course of a year, only 2 degrees from the Equator. It should be
similar to Honolulu which was 0500 UT today. But this gets it:
https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/@11185877
with LSS at 18:38 minus 14 hours = 0438 UT (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** KOREA NORTH. 11735, Aug 17 at 0627, too-sweet orchestral music so
typical of this Eden, VOK, then YL talk in French so fraxured I have
to concentrate a while to be sure of language until ``bombe atomique``
heard, their signature subject; and onward with vocal songs in Korean?
Cuts off circa 0655* rousing me from my doze; for Latin America,
French at this hour a marvel of optimism. Returned on at 1404, there
it is again during Korean (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 515-MCW kHz, Aug 17 at 0617, NDB PN Ponca City is still
off, and 341-MCW kHz, EI Enid JBA is still on (Glenn Hauser, Enid,
WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 88.1, Aug 17 at 1741 UT, KMSI Moore Oasis Network cuts to
dead air briefly during interview; at 1742 their local translator on
89.1, K206CA is dead air too, but OK at 1747 recheck when it`s
confirmed // 88.1.

106.7, Aug 17 at 1747 UT $ tereo dead air here from KTUZ-FM Okarche,
the Spanish station, vying to outdo Oasis. I was bandscanning for Es
DX after a 100 MHz MUF spike was reported west of here: nada (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 9830, Aug 16 at 2200, VOT English to us is not off today
but might as well be vs strong NSS RTTY adding up to S9. These
entities evidently do not recognize each other as problematic! Nor
does it speak well for their official? monitors (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** U S A. 13089-USB, Aug 16 at 2159, somewhat distorted OM robovoice
obsessed with nothing but winds in knots and seas in feet --- what`s
the conversion factor between knots and feet per second, to make the
units match?? --- day by day thru Friday, then back to tonight for
Caribbean between 64 and 72 west, down to Venezuela. This is a shared
USCG frequency; per Eibi at 2130-2205 it`s NMN Chesapeake VA, elsewhen
Guam, Hawaii or California (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 25000 & 20000, Aug 16 at 2150, WWV is S9 on both tnx to
sporadic-E short-skip under 500 miles from CO to here, but there is
*no* activity to be heard on adjacent hambands 12, 15 meters. A couple
unID phoners are audible on 18134-USB and 18136.5-USB (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

Also confirmed UT Mon Aug 17 after 0330 on WRMI 9955 and/or webcast, I
think but missed logging it.

Also confirmed Monday August 17 from 1801.7 on IRRS 7290 Bulgaria,
S9+20 via UTwente but with storm crashes worse than the plus/minus 10
AACI. Runup check this week: carrier *1755.5 takes over from JBA algo,
dead air until 1758.9 sounds like Feature Story News --- yes, as not
chopped off before its outro; 1759.9 to UNESCO PSA in Spanish! about
CV; then IRRS sign-on again with deactivated? P O Box 10980 in Milano;
1801.3 FSN again where it usually inserts just before 1801.7 WOR,
which continues airing intact. Next:

1800vUT Monday IRRS 7290 Bulgaria to WNW, 594-Italy

announcements until chopped off at 1459*. When last logged a biweek
ago I had to go to Kuwait to hear it as hardly any UTwente sig, to be
expected so close to FRANCE and skipping over: distance from Issoudun
to Enschede is 684 km = 425 statute miles. If site has not changed, I
suppose well audible now because plenty of sporadic E MUF over western
Europe short-skipping (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** MEXICO. 28166-CW, Aug 15 at 1854, JBA beacon a bit chirpy, VVV

``28.2865 WBØBIN C SABIN MINNESOTA # 7W GP VERTICAL New 22 April 18``

28290.8-CW, Aug 16 at 1903, AR DE K5TLJ/B:
``28.2908 K5TLJ C TRUMANN ARKANSAS # 5 W VERTICAL testing 10 Jan
12``

All of which have been heard recently before. Frequencies not measured
exactly but listings seem correct. Note that some zero-land hams do
not use the real figure zero in their calls, which is not crossed in
most fonts, but the Scandinavian *letter* Ø which is, and which means
you will not get a search hit unless also employed.

This time a few widely-spaced phonehams also to be found on 10m:

28665-USB, Aug 16 at 1850, K4LO with repeated unfonetik but clear
calls in contact, per QRZ.com:
``K4LO USA flag USA, PHILLIP N WILSON, PACE, FL 32571-2850``

28425-USB, Aug 16 at 1847, CQ CQ CQ, KC4TVZ with fonetix, heavy
southern accent, sounds like a recording, exactly same intonation with
each repeat, and he barely leaves enough time between for a reply.
Again/still at 1902. From his page is a big contester/certificate
collector:
``KC4TVZ USA flag USA, Todd Burnette, Flowery Branch, GA 30542``

28433-USB, Aug 16 at 1850, unID ragchewer about tubes no hurry to ID
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 5085, UT Sun Aug 16 at 0020, after a hamadstring and WTWW
plea for listener $ $ , `TONITO` starts and runs until 0050. Bob Heil is
presenting a recording of his performance in 1966 on the Hammond Organ
he built for a Holiday Inn in Columbus OH; I have switched to #2
webcast where $ tereo is possible, and it does sound so on a rather
noisy old tape (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. The sporadic E VHF DX season is winding down now, but
keeping an eye on the DXMAPs, afternoon of Aug 15, some MUF spikes
above 90, even above 108 MHz, so it`s worth a try on the radio in the
garaged but very hot parked car. Unfortunately, fringe Kansans are
above normal messing up some `open` frequencies, so I wind up mainly
exploring them for a dekaminute, 2235-2245 UT:

At 2238, 101.3 Wichita with national and local ads such as Cavender`s,
but CCI mentioning ``K-Love``. WTFDA Database shows this extensive
network with 6 stations on 101.3, none of them near, max power 6 kW
ERP, two of them translators in: NY, WA, CO, MS. I would not expect
this to be overload from a local K-Love faraway frequency.

At 2243, 105.9 with romusic in Spanish, none known in OK, JBA and
fading, but likely just:
``KSSA 105.9 INGALLS KS 100.0 kW H&V, 203.0 m HAAT, 37-46-48 100-27-36
Spanish 415C KE BUENA KSSA...KSSA REGIONAL MEXICAN KE BUENA 105.9``
which is between Garden City and Dodge City (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK,
WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 27385-LSB, Aug 16 at 1445, among freebander pileup one
reveals he`s in northeast Tennessee; a prime such frequency, another
being 27375-LSB; but no 10m hambeacons heard less than one MHz higher.
DXMAPs show MUF spikes above 90 MHz, but FM band not checked yet
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98-CUSB, Sat Aug 15 at 1640-1730+, no signal from
LRA36 via Brasil SDR --- original plans were to broadcast from 1700,
but missed regular Wednesday 14-16+ airing Aug 12 due to bad weather,
so maybe it`s still bad, or skipped without a new `Corazón Antártico`
show to repeat for starters.

[and non]. I had wondered whether the RAE special via LRA36 on July 25
would also show up on WRMI relay, and now Ron Howard confirms:

``Hi Glenn, Happened to tune by 5800, on Aug 14 (Friday), at 0304 and
heard WRMI with the special LRA36 program you reported hearing on July
25. My four minute audio [in English] is at

Ron California`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CHINA. CNR1 jammer survey August 15 at 1350-1400: none in the 16s;
15165; 14940 JBA carrier, 14920, 14850; 13130, 13020 S7/S9+10, 12880,
12870 S9/+10; 12210 vs CODAR; 25mb inband skipped; 11500, 11460 S9+10,
11440 & 11150 JBA carriers, 11120 S9+; 31m inband skipped; 9300 S9
unusual, the only in lower 9s but confirmed // (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** CUBA. 13632 & 13564 approx., Aug 15 at 1351, my CNR1 jammer survey
is interrupted by reactivation of broad RHC spurblobs out of 13700
transmitter, missing for quite a while, but never permanently fixed.
No programming audible in SSB mode, but in FM and AM. These at approx.
68-69 kHz intervals; after 1400 China finished, back to look for more
as RHC runs multi-lingual ID (including abolished Guarani, Quechua??):
also on plus side around 13769, 13838; and trace of the F# tone circa
13908 and 13427, the lower vs CODAR. Something`s always wrong at RHC
(Glenn Hauer, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA [and non]. 515-MCW kHz, Aug 15 at 0626, NDB PN in Ponca
City is still off; 341-MCW EI in Enid is still on.

Too much storm noise from KS to detect much else, but two signals seem
mixing on 420, probably PK in KS and FQ in MN, from previous
experience, both 25 watts (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** THAILAND. 9390, August 15 at 1359, lovely deep chimes of HSK9 on
good signal vs 9395 WRMI, just in time for 1400 English --- but cuts
off briefly and comes back with much weaker signal before 1400, still
chiming. Shux, at 1330-1400 it`s in Thai on 54 degree beam for CIRAF
45 & 50 --- but 50 is Philippines eastward, while 45 is Japan NE.
After 1400 in English has switched to 132 degrees for CIRAF 49 thru
60, i.e. all of SE Asia, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand, but
skipping 52, 53 and 57 which are central and southern Africa, the
strange way CIRAF zones are numbered. If only they could stay on 54
degrees or even less for English so we could hear them, much better in
our mornings than the supposedly intentional NAm broadcasts in our
evenings after 0000 on JBA at best 15590 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2047 monitoring: slept thru the
