Logs
** AUSTRALIA. 28445 USB, May 21 at 2214, VK4KX calling CQ10 -- only
signal found on otherwise `dead` band.
VK4KX Australia flag Australia
Bernie
Bernard Terry
Po Box 357
Nambour, Queensland 4560
Australia
Nambour is on the ``Sunshine Coast`` just north of Brisbane. Lots of
info on his health, history, equipment, certificates at:
https://www.qrz.com/db/VK4KX
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CANADA. 7850 & 3330 RC USBs, May 22 at 0659, no signals from CHU,
apparently off due to storms; but time marches on (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** CUBA. 13680, May 22 at 2240, RHC Spanish S9/+20 on secret
frequency, still missing from EiBi but which has not been updated
since May 3; nor in Aoki as of May 21 which has made little effort to
include true current RHC listings (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6000 & 6060 & 6100 & 6165, UT Sunday May 22 at 0700, all RHC
frequencies are off so nowhere for Esperanto scheduled now.
Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** MEXICO. 6185, May 22 at 0700, still no signal from R. Educación.
Stephen Luce, Houston TX, replied on the WOR iog: ``Glenn, I haven't
heard anything out of XEPPM for the past few days here in Houston at
various checks between 0300 and 0500 UT. Usually has a decent signal
though audio levels can be all over the place`` (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** RUSSIA. 78 kHz, re my report of Mayak heard via Izhevsk SDR,
shortly after posting that, another possibility occurred to me:
remnant of ``rediffusion`` wired ``broadcasting`` on LW. And then
multiply confirmed on the WOR iog:

``Also regarding the 78 kHz signal on the Russian SDR: I recall seeing
a similar report a few years ago, and it was said to be the SDR
picking up RF from an old Soviet era wired radio distribution system
that (amazingly) is still in operation. That same report also
mentioned a second signal on 120 kHz. Perhaps this is what you heard?
Stephen Luce, Houston, Texas``

``This is a traditional line transmitter/wire radio frequency in
Russia. So looks like this type of broadcasting is still on in some
cities.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linjesender
73, Patrick Robic, Austria``

``Hi Glenn, That's easy: 78 kHz is the Mayak subcarrier in Russian
cable radio networks that still remain operational in some cities
here.

Unfortunately the English Wikipedia article says nothing about such
networks in Russia. Russian article is much more extensive, and you
can also find some info on this matter in the Spanish one:

https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9F%D1%80%D0%BE%D0%B2%D0%BE%D0%B4%D0%BD%D0%BE%D0%B5_%D0%B2%D0%B5%D1%89%D0%B0%D0%BD%D0%B8%D0%B5
https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_por_cable

By the way, cable radio in my city is completely off since 2012, due
to economical non-efficiency. Best 73, Dmitry Mezin, Kazan, Russia``

``Cute! How convenient to find this SDR already tuned to 78 kHz. I
almost wonder why I so far did not have the idea to check if somewhere
Radiotochka bleed-out can still be detected.

By the way, word has it that in the GDR some wired radio systems (I
understand using frequencies above 150 kHz, for use with regular radio
sets) remained in operation into the 70s. But so far no citations are
available to back up this gossip.

And don't confuse two different things: "Cable radio" will nowadays in
a number of countries be understood as "FM radio via TV coax cable",
as introduced in the eighties. It's at present a nice voodoo doll for
those who want to "close down analogue radio", and then they are very
surprised when being told that this political gesture will just bring
the cable distribution of many radio stations to an end.
Kai Ludwig, Germany`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SAO TOME E PRINCIPE. 17530.079, Sun May 22 at 1458, JBA carrier,
one of few sigs on band beyond 17855 Spain, measured just in time
before 1459*. VOA in Kinyarwanda/Kirundi scheduled Sat & Sun only
1400-1500, to be followed immediately by English daily via Botswana
but no sign of that, which per Aoki would be *jammed by the ChiCom
where too many subjects understand English. Something`s unsettled at
USAGM. I also have a JBA not off-frequency signal on 17580 continuing
past 1500 where Pinheira in Kin is also scheduled until 1500 only
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

1930 Sat is nominal same start time for WOR on WA0RCR, 1860 AM,
Wentzville MO, so I tune that in via nearby Warrenton remote, at 1933

way early about 1909! S9+8 but heavy storm crashes.

Confirmed UT Sunday May 22 at 0030 on WRMI 7780, S6/S7 into Durango
SDR but JBA vs storm crashes; better S7/S9 into Missouri; JBA direct

Confirmed UT Sunday May 22 ending at 1358 on WMRI Europe via Channel
292, Germany, 9670, and immediately into Russian with no ID, S6/S7

too-close UTwente. Must have started at 1329. Next:

appreciated, thanks this week to Radio Dan, Ohio; preferably by MO or
check in US$ on a US bank to:

Or via PayPal not necessarily in US funds, to woradio at yahoo.com
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 21525, May 21 at 2214, S5/S7 of dead air, as WRMI-7 Radio
Africa has not been turned off at 2100* as scheduled; with sporadic E
boost (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 9455, May 22 at 0703, no signal from WRMI-5, supposed to run

UNIDENTIFIED. 12000, May 22 at 0712, 2-way in Spanish. These seem to

CUBA 11880, May 20 at 2309, RHC is S6/S8 but JBM, in English? as
scheduled to Africa. Should be // 5040 but that`s JBA carrier in HNL

11950, Fri May 20 at 2309, RHC in Spanish is S8/S9+25 and even
modulating. Is this the alternate Mesa Redonda TV soundtrack?
Schedules show it not on Fridays

15730, May 20 at 2310, RHC S9+10 but suptorted, sounds like fraxured
French = Kriyòl = Creole as scheduled, toward S America, not Haïti

15230, May 20 at 2311, RHC averages S9 but JBM, should be Brazuguese?
No, Spanish, after 22-23 Portuguese, per EiBi

11880, May 21 at 0046, still on with dead air at S9+20. Supposed to
last 22-24 UT only, but previously ran way late into the night.
Somethings` always wrong at Radio Propaganda Cuba. The other side:

Something's rotten in Cuba … and it heralds more hunger
While the Government spends $ 1.5 billion building hotels, it slashes
food imports and investment in agriculture.

Logs
** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98 RCUSB, Saturday May 21 from 1450, no signal
yet from LRA36 into Brasil, Argentine SDRs. Finally *1510 but JBA into
Brasília, much better into Bs As with sign-on, 1512 Antártida
themesong. Talk but too weak to follow, S2/S3; 1520 song, 1523 siren,
interview; but being overridden by 5-second-long uteblaaps of noise
starting every 35 to 40 seconds hitting S3/S4. At 1622 I notice the
bursts have stopped, probably somewhat earlier. 1628 song and RNASG
ID. 1638 has improved to S3/S5; gone about 1647* without any formal
sign-off (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** MEXICO. 6185, May 21 at 0635, NO signal from R. Educación, XEPPM.
Sure hope it`s not the end of Mexico`s only surviving SW station!!! It
was last reported May 15 by Rick Barton, AZ. As of May 17-18-19, Ron
Howard says it was missing at 1024, audiblizing China. Still nothing
at earlier hours May 20 & 21. It had been running all-night till about
1100*? EiBi: 2100-1040. Aoki: 2100-1000. WRTH: 2200-1000, a.k.a. Señal
Cultura México, 5 kW (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** RUSSIA. 78.0 kHz, May 21 at 1904, Russian mentions ``Mayak``; on
the Izhevsk SDR I am about to try for 9370 R. Svoboda, already tuned
here. With BFO, carrier is slightly unstable, but steady S8/9+5, and
no QRM from 77.5 kHz German timesignal. 78 kHz of course is not where
any broadcaster is supposed to be. An image from MW or higher on LW?
No such frequency known in Russia for Mayak or anything anymore.
Zacharias Liangas had also heard this May 18 at 1615 and not on any
other remote. ??? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** RUSSIA [non]. 9370, May 21 at 1902, checking for R. Svoboda relay
via Armenia? But no signal into UTwente, nor Izhevsk, Russia. Must be
off, or canceled? Still nothing at 1916 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2139 monitoring: confirmed UT
Saturday May 21 from a few seconds before 0400 on WBCQ Radio Angela,
5129.976, S9+10 into Maryland SDR. No QRM but stormcrashes.

Meanwhile on another SDR in TN I view the waterfall around 4790. There
are still uteblaaps there but weak boxes maybe once a minute,
alternating, plus, zero, minus 4790. Below the clear 5130, I also see
some on the plus side of 5085, but probably inaudible vs huge WTWW
signal.

Also confirmed Sat May 21 at 1610 the 1600 on WRN N America. Next:

1930vUT Saturday WA0RCR 1860-AM
