Hi All,
With reference to the 1108 Hz tune up tone at ENC Woofferton.
May I confess to being the constructor of this unit in 2007!
With the arrival of the RIZ 250 kW transmitters was a new control system which resulted in the 1981 BBC designed and supplied "WATCH" system being decommissioned. Within the WATCH was a BBC Tone source unit with an 1100 Hz output.
This could no longer be used but we still needed a source of "Local Tone", hence the local construction of a new unit .
It uses a Wein bridge transistor circuit and a Philips TDA7052 BTL audio amplifier in the output stage to 600R for 0 dB output. there is a simple 12V power supply on board as well.
The frequency is fixed by means of Philips orange polyester 0.068 uF capacitors in the bridge with associated 1% resistors.
Thank you for checking both the actual freq and the harmonics! I never did check; I just worked out the theory so I was not too far off!
Regards,
Dave G4OYX

ANTARCTICA Only a small contribution on this special
solstice Antarctic midwinter radio transmission.

600 Ohm. Unfortunately I got a personal phone call at 21.35 UT.
It was necessary to interrupt my monitoring.
So I heard only these 7 minutes tonight:

21.29:05 UT June 21
switch on at ENC Woofferton bcast center on 12065 kHz,
heard some 1010 Hertz test tone procedure crash start.

21.30:10 UT BBC program start.

I switched-in to two Kiwi units at Sao Paulo Brazil in
played with the different AGC slider,
one on 9505 kHz later switched to 7305 kHz from Ascension,

and at 21.28 UT the best SDR audio noted on 12065 kHz channel.

12065 kHz S=9+35dB or -41dBm in Sao Paulo Brazil,

and more poor at Sao Paulo
9505 kHz S=9+20dB or -55dBm (Poor muffled audio tone,
like from a watering can,
ancient micro)
7305 kHz S=9+10dB or -62dBm I guess much much better audio
modulation downunder in the
Antarctic station though)

When tuned - out from 7305 to 7320 kHz upper sideband,
there at Sao Paulo SDR remotedly was a main power scratched
audio noise from the neighbourhood,
underneath ... man made noise surrounded.

CUBA next to the Brazilian wander-shift 9673v stn,
noted two Bejucal RHC Spanish outlets at

22.45 to 23.07 UT on June 21:
9535even exact aligned 100 kW TX unit at Bejucal
towards MEX to EQA Latin AM western flank.
What happened ? - bad audio, and seen visible
13 x audio strings (+5 minor strings too) either sideband,
up to 2.1 kHz away distance either side.
50, 120, 200, 250, 300, 350 ... Hertz audio tone distance
mixture of 50 and 60 Hertz main power ?

Surprise at 22.58 UT noted the other RHC on exact 9640 Khz,
but next check at 23.04 UT was on 9710 kHz the 50 kW unit
towards Antilles and Suriname, Guyana etc.

Betreff: [bdxc-news] BBC Antarctic Midwinter broadcast - June 21 frequencies
confirmed

Thanks to Dave Passey at Woofferton who has just confirmed to me the
frequencies for the BBC Antarctic Midwinter broadcast tomorrow, Tuesday 21st
June, at 2130-2200 UTC:

"Following the test transmissions, the 6035kHz from DHA has been closed out,
leaving just the three:

7305 ASC
9505 WOF
12065 WOF

You are correct that there will only be one transmission on Shortwave at
2130UTC. "
(in the UK, the programme is also on BBC WS on DAB at 2130 UTC, 2230 BST.
This is probably a slightly shorter edition though: 2132-2200, so best to
listen on shortwave!)

This from BBC’s Media site:
The BBC’s unique annual broadcast to Antarctica, featuring music and
messages.

The Antarctic Midwinter Broadcast is unlike anything else on the BBC World
Service. Every year, we make this special programme for just 32 listeners:
the team of scientists and support staff isolated at British research
stations in the Antarctic midwinter.

Presented by Cerys Matthews, the programme features messages from family and
friends at home as well as music requests from Antarctica. For decades it
has been part of the traditional midwinter celebrations.

For the staff living at three British Antarctic Survey research stations
(Rothera, Bird Island and South Georgia), and at other national bases across
the frozen continent, midwinter is a special time. With no sunlight,
Antarctica is at its coldest and those stationed on the frozen continent
face months of total isolation.

Midwinter celebrations at the British research stations include a feast,
exchange of presents, watching the 1982 horror film The Thing (where an
alien monster terrorises an Antarctic base) and listening to the BBC’s
Midwinter Broadcast.

As ever, this year’s programme includes recorded messages from family and
friends of the winterers, music requests from the personnel in Antarctica,
and appearances from special guests.

ANTARCTICA [non]. All set for the annual BBCWS Midwinter broadcast
to Antarctica, June 21 at 2126 tune-in to Woofferton 12065 via LU4AA
remote near Buenos Aires. Cuts on at *2129 with tone S9+10 easily
overcoming noise level, so I stay here and do not even check the other
frequencies as I do not want to miss anything. Initially, all four RX
at this Kiwi are tuned to one BBC frequency or another, but the rest
go and come.

2130 opening by hostess Cerys Matthws - Welsh, pronounced Care-iss,
Calling Antarctica, especially all 32 over-winterers at Rothera
station on the Peninsula - pronounced Ráw-dher-a. Interview woman
formerly there, about strange dreams; acknowledging other nations'
stations, notably Ukrainian. 2133 messages to South Georgia, bit of
music, from family voices, at King Edward station and another one.
2135 greeting from an explorer. 2136 bit of Taylor Swift song for SG;
greeting in French; limerick in English; heavy French accent in
English; unison in English.

2139 Sir David Attenborough assures it`s still sunny in Surrey; a new
research ship has been named for him. 2140 ID, msg from Director of
British Antarctic Survey, Prof. Jane Francis. 2142 greetings to the 32
at Rothera, from many family members. Details hard to understand over
phone, accents, but no doubt the relatives recognise them. Ex-Rotheran
tells about research there under ice, where one hears ice cracking,
wails of Weddell seals. Ice cliffs are breaking and glaciers receding
due to climate change.

More family greetings including from kids; 2154 poem; 2157 final
message; 2159 music and credits to 2200*. Starting at 2145 and at
least thrice I see on the waterfall a JBV diagonal trace upward from
10? to 26 MHz, i.e. an ionosonde. Tnx for another enjoyable special,
which no doubt will soon be available online for those who missed it
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

BRAZIL. 9670.003, June 21 at 0636, JBA S3 signal, surely R. Voz
Missionária finally breaking the 9670 barrier, as no carrier lower to
9665 and nothing else including Channel 292, Germany, normally audible
at this hour. John Hudak, Ontario, tells the WOR iog about monitoring
RVM extensively several hours previous when it was jumping around all
over from just below 9665 to almost 9670 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

CUBA. 13632 approx., June 21 at 1427, RHC spurblob with F# tone out
of 13700 transmitter. Also traces about 13769 and 13564. Something's
always wrong at RHC.

In previous report, I calculated hypothetical second-order spurs at
the wrong intervals from 13700, using the old log instead of the new
one. Should have been "circa 13556 & 13844" (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Happy solstice! This report dispatched at 2223 UT June 21

They had been awaiting a replacement part since last on air May 15 or
16. I had hoped they would build back better, but resumes
undermodulation and slightly off-frequency at 6184.97. Believe this is
first time back as I have been checking every night. Manuel Méndez,
Spain, and Eric Fetters-Walp, Washington were also hearing it earlier
this evening. Resumes being the only remaining active SWBC station in
México or Central America: we must treasure it (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 97.5, June 21 at 0229 UT, ``Tulsa`s Rocklahoma station,
97-5, KMOD``. Per WTFDA, normal slogan is ``Tulsa`s Rock station``,
but Rocklahoma music festival is coming Sept 2-4 near Pryor. Run
across during bandscan for possible Es DX --- as I did several times
June 20/UT 21 spurred by 100+ MHz MUFs here and there per DXMAP, but
never any such DX making it here (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2143 monitoring: confirmed UT
Tuesday June 21 at 0030 on WRMI 9395, S9+30 into Missouri SDR, at 0047
down to S9+10/20. BUT usual // 9455 playing classic rock music
instead! Segués with only one brief nondescript DJ announcement at
0038 mentioning hits from year 1965, program unknown. 0100 switch to
SMTV.

This is a totally confusing situation. WRMI websked now dated June 18
at top now shows 00-01 on 9455 as deep purple System C, which
otherwise pertains to VOA and R. Svoboda relays for/about Ukraine. But
the C program grid does not show anything at this hour, rather System
G still with WOR on both at 0030 UT Tue and Thu. So same situation
presumably applies to same scheduling at 0030 UT Thursdays. Next:

2230 UT Tuesday WRMI 9955 to SSE [jammed by Cuba]
2330 UT Tuesday WRMI 9395 to NNW
1000 UT Wednesday Unique R, Australia 5035-USB or 3210-USB
1030 UT Wednesday WRMI 5850 to NW
2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW
0030 UT Thursday WRMI 9395 to NNW; 9455? to WNW
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S; 9395 to NNW
