** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98-RCUSB: Once again LRA36 operations bear little
resemblance to their own advance publicity. So we are not expecting
them this Saturday, but checked anyway at 1733 October 17, there they
are in Spanish conversation, via a remote in Brasil, VP S2-S3. 1739
into a brief song, back to more chat. 1755 another song. 1800 ID.

Manuel Méndez, Lugo, Spain, had informed us Oct 16: ``ANTARCTICA,
15476 USB, LRA 36, Radio Nacional Arcángel San Gabriel, Base
Esperanza. According with a whatsapp received from the station
operator, the next LRA 36 transmission will be the Tuesday 20th of
October, day of the 41th anniversary of the station. The program will
start at 1300 UTC, one hour earlier than usual. I suppose there will
be a special eQSL commemorating this anniversary transmission.
tranalra36@radionacional.gov.ar
Address for reception reports`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CHINA. CNR1 jammer survey, Oct 17 at 1356: 14900 JBA carrier; 13920
music S7; 12550 & 12500 JBACs; 11100 timesignal until 1400*. No others
found WOOB and too late to explore further down (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** COLOMBIA? 4940, Oct 17 at 0156, anonymous mystery missionary
station, with gospel huxter in Spanish S9/+5 via TWR Bonaire SDR; also
at 0350 at S9+5/10 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA [non]. 5800, UT Sat Oct 17 at 0300, I haven`t rechecked
WRMI-10 in quite a while since discovering the surprise new Radio
República transmission instead of via France, [which is still VG on
9490 before 0300] on UT Fri-Sat-Sun-Mon, which is *still secret*, only
blank spaces on System H program grid [but with `Viva Miami` intruding
at 0300-0330 on UT Sun & Mon.]

Yes, there it is at S9+20/30 opening `Alternativa` program announced
as ``Radio Martí y Radio República se unen para presentarles
Alternativa``, subject being Chile. First I know of those two
anti-Castroism stations joining programming. However, not simulcast,
something else now on RM 6030 (Glenn Hauser)

** OKLAHOMA. RF 19, Oct 17 after 0200 UT, my ATSC 1.0 converter box
still displays no signal from KAUT ``Freedom 43`` which is allegedly
still on there having changed to ATSC 3.0 system. So again I go
looking for it elsewhere.

The STB still remembers when KAUT RF channel was 40, before 19, with
duplicate 43+s. But might as well delete the 40s. Now it *does*
display the four KAUT channels with PSIP IDs:
43-1 KAUT-DT
43-2 Court
43-3 Escape
43-4 Cozi
And on the STB one can tell the real RF channel for these is 27! Which
is really KFOR, which has its own four virtual channels if you start
out with channel 4.

My Sanyo TV however, will not tell you what RF channels it is really
getting, and for some strange reason does display 43-4, 43-3, 43-2 but
NOT KAUT itself on 43-1! Go figure.

BTW, KAUT call memorializes Gene Autry, original owner. A tech school
in Enid is named for another Autry (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2056 monitoring: confirmed UT
Saturday October 17 at 0130 on WRMI 7780, VP S7-S9 here; at 0154 check
via UTwente, good S9/+10.

Also confirmed Sat Oct 17 at 1144 the 1130 on WRMI 9955, VG S9+20 and
no jamming audible.

Almost confirmed Sat Oct 17 at 1315 the 1300 on WRMI 15770, JBA
carrier and I can almost imagine my voice is on there in all
probability; slightly better a semihour later during Radiogram
beepery. Next:

** U S A. 9955, Sat Oct 17 at 1315, WRMI dead air at tune in, S9+10,
then African song presumed default world-music fill instead of
scheduled `Beacon of Truth` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. (Area 51 WBCQ webcast), UT Sat Oct 17 from 0000, `AAAWWW`,
usual WTO theme, opening fiddling with mikes and lauding Angela; 0008
interrupted by call from annoying Freddie; discussing AM stereo; 0014
says closing down phone line because this is an important program,
most of which consists at spot chex of AW reading long piece and
commenting on the 100th anniversary of broadcasting, as in KDKA, on
November 2; by 0049 he says WBCQ 7490 & 6160 will have special
commemorative programming on that (local) date vaguely at 8-9-10 pm,
which will then be EST of UT -5. 0052 to e-mails, but explains that
last Saturday there was a lightning strike against amplifiers,
transmitters, tower lites, etc., against the 400` AM 780 tower, also
damaging satellite receiver, LNB; but Tom, Jeff and Jason worked hard
on repairing things. Station has no insurance and limited funds.
Fortunately the Super-station was not affected. 0059 closing prayer
thanking God for triodes and other stuff. After 0100 this webcast goes
into stereo music while Hal Turner presumably occupies the 7490.

Hope John Carver is doing OK if not his computer as we have not heard
from him in a few weeks with his AAAWWW summaries.

Meanwhile, the zappahead website says:

``WBCQ 6.160 MHz status update 16 October 2020 --- Our shortwave

** U S A [non]. 9670, UT Sat Oct 17 at 0225, JBA carrier to west
Iceland SDR, perhaps Texas Radio SW special as long scheduled this
date from 0200 via Channel 292, GERMANY. Adjacent much stronger 9665v
Brasil with LAH against something else. Walt Salmaniw, BC, had not
been hearing it via various remotes including Iceland. I reported to
TRSW and got this reply:

At my place I had full power from the transmitter; and because I was
up in the middle of the night, I wanted to check reception in the U.S.
and found only traces of the carrier. You can't expect reception in
Twente (700 km distance) when the skip zone is 5.000 km; no reception
in Europe at all. Might get worse in the winter, maybe you choose a
different frequency.

** U S A. Re: ``BTW, I`ve almost quit bandscanning above RF 37 due to
progressive repacking; but I see lots and lots of 38+ are still listed
at W9WI.com; do they really still exist? (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK,
WOR)``

Doug Smith, W9WI, replies Oct 16 on the WTFDA gg:

``LPTV stations are allowed to continue above RF-37 until July 13th,
2021 IF they don't interfere with land-mobile operations.

A quick check of the FCC DB shows approximately 180 digital LPs and
200 analogs still authorized to operate in channels 38-51. Some of
these are probably actually operating below channel 38 under program
test authority or Special Temporary Authority (for example, KQCT-LP in
the Quad Cities, which is still licensed on channel 61 but has a CP
for 32 and is operating there.)

I would keep scanning above 37. There isn't much left up there, but as
a result there isn't much interference (at least, as long as you're
not surrounded by T-Mobile 5G)`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** VENEZUELA. 6906.08-RCUSB, Oct 17 at 0155, quick check via TWR

UNIDENTIFIED. 4905, Oct 17 at 0614, RTTY active again here, but also
on 4985 which is NSS, so not a single transmitter I have been hearing,
once each on these and 4895; altho both/all could still be NSS. EiBi
lists 4985 but not the others. No significant Region 2 hits on 4905 or
4895 in UDXF iogroup (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 5980, Oct 17 at 0611, JBA carrier and maybe some talk

song at 0220 switches at 0221 to Brazuguese, from RAE. Relays via WRMI

(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ASCENSION. 7305, Oct 16 at 0629, one B-B-C chime sequence and
opening with drumming in presumed Hausa as scheduled until 0700, 125
kW, 55 degrees; very poor (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** BRAZIL. 6135.083, Oct 16 at 0638, soft music at S5-S7, presumed

CNR1 jamming apparently already there vs Sound of Hope (Glenn Hauser,

which is 30 watts from QUIncy, Illinois, where they pronounce it
Quinsy instead of Quinzy as in Mass. Just in time before UI fades out
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** MADAGASCAR. 13710, Oct 14 at 2109, something new: ``His mother
waited up for him``, repeated over and over --- a secret spy message?
No, alternating with something in Chinese, so a language lesson; first
thought VOA? But next phrase to learn is ``The Bible tells us to wait
patiently on the Lord`` --- oh, oh, better not be VOA. Nothing is
scheduled in the big three on 13710 at this hour, but MWV is on 13710
until 2100 in Arabic. Chinese follows supposed to be on 11610 where
it`s always good here, aimed at Europe, so failed to change frequency!
Wish I had figured this out in time to check whether 11610 were
missing today (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 9830, Oct 14 at 2205, VOT English inbooming to UTwente at
S9+40 with usual features, but after same old COVID-19 PSA and `Today
in History`, just music fill after 2218, no `Letterbox` on yet another
Wednesday. But the music is really nice (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2055 monitoring: confirmed Wed Oct 14 from
2100:18 on WBCQ 7490.06v, S6-S8 direct as reception gradually
improves; jump to 2200 in November will help more.

Also confirmed surprise new time on WRMI 9955, Wed Oct 14 at 2200,
caught by Richard Lemke, Alberta; and now it is on the skedgrid too.

Next: 0100 UT Thursday WRMI 7780 to NE

broadcast at 0130 on WRMIs 5850 & 5010 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 18155-USB, Oct 14 at 2103, ham in ``western Washington``
in contact with weaker station, but he is in deep fades avoiding ID,
typical of sporadic E. First catch on ``17`` m in a few weeks despite
frequent scanthrus. DXMaps did not catch this opening MUF even unto
<19 MHz. OSOB and also not a thing on 16m SWBC band, and probably not
either a single transmission now from anywhere in Hemisphere West
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ALGERIA [non]. 13820, Wed Oct 14 at 1810, another try at English
from RTA via FRANCE. Again poor signal at UTwente, and even worse to
Spain, South Africa, Qatar and Kuwait SDRs, but ICELAND is sufficient
off the back S4-S6 and echoey as I pay attention from 1825: now in
French; 1835 pause for Qur`an; 1838 back to French; 1844 météo avec
musique; 1846 item about Nations-Unies; 1851 Arabic to 1859* off. No
English during this period, so is there ever, anymore? BTW, météo
meaning weather is missing from my neat handy little Collins
French/English 760-page pocket dixionary first published in 1952y:
must be a neologism (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CANADA. 248-MCW kHz, Oct 14 at 0614 UT, ND beacon dash and WG,
which is 1000 watts from WinnipeG, Manitoba, *much* stronger than the
others now and often:

250-MCW kHz, Oct 14 at 0613 UT, ND beacon dash and FO, which is 1600
watts from Flin Flon, Manitoba. ``Flin Flon shares the distinction of
being named after a character in an adventure novel with Tarzana,
California.`` --- bing. 2066 km = 1284 statute miles from Enid.

258-MCW kHz, Oct 14 at 0612 UT, ND beacon dash and ZSJ which is 1000
watts from Sandy Lake, Ontario, not South Africa. I was tuned to
257-USB. Wikipedia:

``Sandy Lake First Nation (or Negaw-zaaga'igan Nitam-Anishinaabe,
Oji-Cree: ᓀᑲᣞ ᓵᑲᐦᐃᑲᐣ ᓂᑕᒼ ᐊᓂᔑᓈᐯ) is an independent Oji-Cree First
Nations band government. The First Nations community, in the west part
of Northern Ontario, is located in the Kenora District, 227 km (141
mi) northeast of Red Lake, Ontario.`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. RF 19, Oct 14 at 1515 UT, still no signal from KAUT OKC.
Rabbitears.info shows it has transitioned to ATSC 3.0 as of October 8,
the only Market 50 station so far, and as related to KFOR. None others
in OK or KS, and in TX only in Austin and DFW. Very few overall.

No signal registers visibly, of course, nor even on the STB meter, but
presumably is there, and enough to block any DX of either standard.
KAUT ``Freedom 43`` programming in ATSC 1.0 is allegedly now on the RF
27 KFOR transmitter, but I am not getting any sign of it, just KFOR
and its usual -2, -3 and -4 subchannels. Surely the STB would step on
to -5 or whatever? Rabbitears.info is not showing programming transfer
to KFOR.

I asked KWTV/KSBI engineering director Jack Mills about this, and he
thinx the only way to get KAUT in would be to rescan. But STBs should
not require that, and my other TV which does, Sanyo, I never want to
rescan since it may miss marginal signals at the moment which are
already scanned in! Never buy a TV which can be set up for tuning
*only* by scanning! Cannot even add or delete channels at will (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. RF 20, Oct 14 at 1513 UT, KTXS 12-1 is decoding, tnx to
tropo blob as forecast by Hepburn, from marginal here to levels 5-6
SSW into W central TX, i.e. Sweetwater station at 494 km = 307 miles
city-to-city. With ABC, The View sporadically decoding, and also at
1532, CW on 12-2 and MeTV on 12-3. Otherstation in market, KRBC NBC
``9`` is now on RF 29 so blocked here by KTUZ or maybe QRMing it. I
had both 9 and 12 many times back in the analog VHF TVDX era. KTXS
runs 530 kW ERP from 1319 feet HAAT per rabbitears.info and is also
direxional skewed eastward toward Abilene, also with beam tilt. Level
1 tropo into S Kansas is enough to inbring sporadically KDCU RF 31
``31``, Derby-Wichita with Univision bug LR at 1523. Both to my
bent-mast and broken antenna at roof-level (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

contact with anotherstation, informal weather discussion, digiblast
and nothing further for a few minutes. Searched out an ancient
27-year-old list by Richard Bak of FEMA frequencies, not including
this one, and calls, this one having been in Columbus OH;
