Please note and spread the word - for those not on a list where my almost-daily all-band but mainly SW log reports appear -- or for those who are but find this a more convenient archive, weekly merged roundups of all these reports in their original form are posted early every UT Thursday via:

Glenn Hauser logs August 10, 2022  View Printable Version

Logs
** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98 RCUSB, Wed Aug 10 at 1445 tune-in via Buenos
Aires remote, LRA36 already on with music prélude, nice reception
better than usual, S8/S5. 1500 sign-on with quadrilingual ID including
English that this is in Spanish; in Ciclo Radial 2022, staff list;
1502 Antártida themesong; 1505.5 general clima info including winds up
to 200 kph. Talk about another base founded in 1947, Melchior, like
about it here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melchior_Base
and info about research during the 1957-58 IGY, which was really a
sesquiyear. 1511 ID as ``Radio Arcángel San Gabriel, su compañía``.
1512 finally the YLs start chatting live on this the 15th program of
2022, with guitar background, for today`s date Wed 10 August, and
admit they were not on last Wednesday but Friday instead; when no one?
checked for it, was it at 1500 UT or as once before then, 1800 on
Friday? Something about another base in Orcadas, temp minus 8. 1517
phone numbers and all the other contact info. 1520 violin & keyboard
music. 1525 canned ID with another catch-phrase, ``Nacional, nos
une``; this-week-in-history starting with 8 August. 1532 contact info
again, but chopped off air at 1532.5*, never to return by 1545 when my
first hour on the SDR times out. This keeps happening: why don`t they
turn it back on? Maybe no one notices (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 11880, August 10 at 2314, RHC English is on, somewhat
distorted. 13680, August 10 at 2316, RHC Spanish music is distorted,
overmodulated. 13650, August 10 at 2317, CRI `Portuguese` music-only
relay is buried by continuous racket, OTH radar? Which extends from
13622 to 13656; all as heard via Maryland SDR. Something`s always
wrong at RHC/Radio Cuba. The Other Side:

``OPINION Fires in Matanzas: Divine Curse or Governmental Negligence?
For months, the regime has been downplaying a series of events in
Cuba, dismissing them as' accidents' or 'coincidences'.
JUAN ANTONIO BLANCO | Miami:``
https://diariodecuba.com/cuba/1660064092_41493.html
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA [and non]. 350 MCW kHz, August 10 at 1836 UT, RG, ND
beacon at Will RoGers World Airport [how many cities anywhere really
have a *world* airport?!], is unusually OFF, checked direct right
after local mean noon 1832. The others: 341 MCW, EI, EnId, is better
heard than usual from a few km away; 332 IC, wIChita KS is JBA; 515,
PN, PoNca City is still strongest; 255 SW StillWater is still off.
Also still high local line? noise level peaking in the 380-420 kHz
area, allowing only a JBA carrier on 395 from one Kansan and/or
another and nothing on 407 (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** SPAIN. 17855, Wednesday August 10 at 2200, REE`s token English,
missing since mid-July resumed Aug 8 and now again with Justin Coe,
Letterbox/Mailbox/DX program, a bluesy edition, after news from Spain.
2205.6 hard rock, outro as ``Communication Breakdown`` by Led
Zeppelin, but it`s a cover - apropos after the hiatus. 2209 explains
absence has not been due to heat, but the coincidence of one person on
vacation and the other on sick leave. There once were 6 Americans and
6 Brits in the English service, not any more. But SWBC is not yet
over, as the French service has a new person, and English will be
getting another in September. Justin has been on vacation somewhere in
the US, visiting thrift stores and buying blues records, since he also
does a blues show on Radio 3.

2212 to first mail, from Alan Roe, UK, welcoming him back; and says
Amy Egan is better. Second, from Joe Ihnat in Pennsylvania. 2214
another blues song by the Joe Healy Band. 2219 a June 19 letter from
Bruce Lee in Australia, who wants a QSL, but none are available. Maybe
will be in future, Justin doesn`t know. Then a 7 May from Dwight
Hitchins in Jamaica, Virginia, USA --- really? No such town in my
atlas indices. But Wikipedia says it`s in Middlesex County, 2K
population, unincorporated. He also wants QSL --- maybe, with
management change? 2224 another blues, ``All You Need`` by Matt
Schofield. 2225 last letter from Richard Lemke, Alberta, July 10, who
wants a schedule: don`t have any of those either. Things are rather
random at REE. 2228 a song for Richard, ``The Letter``, to 2230
timesignal and into French.

Only 5 listeners are greeted covering a 4-month period. How many more
might have piled up? So, good to have them back, but it was extremely
rude for no one immediately to make any explanation or apology on the
air about why it was missing, even if neither regular English
announcer were available. Whatever became of Gil Carbajal?

Today I was listening first via UTwente getting 17855 well, but some
deep fades, so switched to Maryland SDR in the storms, as this higher
frequency overcomes most of the crashes which spoilt WBCQ reception
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 9830.007+, Aug 10 at 2157, VOT IS and English ID, VG
S9+35/45 into UTwente, so it`s on today but I am going to SPAIN
instead for token English resumption, q.v. Caught TRT again until
2254* (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** UKRAINE [non]. (7730), Aug 10 at 0500, missed monitoring UR1 via
WRMI, `Ukraine: Security Issue`, so listened later instead via:
http://ukr.radio/images/ckeditor/files/files/ENG_NEWS_09_08_22.mp3

This time it`s the heavily-accented fast-talking guy; including:
specified as for Aug 9 = Day 167 of Putin`s war, altho I had copied a
previous edition as 168? Hard to keep track. Russian advances are very
slow and small. Ukraine holding them back in the south. Russia has
lost 70-80K KIA so far, says Pentagon (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2150 monitoring: ``From: Richard Lemke, St.
Albert, Alberta, Canada, the desk of Richard’s listening Post, Radio:
JRC NRD-535 HF, Antenna: random long wires in the trees. Dear Glenn:

(Lemke, Richard -AB) Good listening, Richard, August 10, 2022``

Also confirmed Wednesday August 10 from 2100:23 on WBCQ 7490 minus 71
Hz = 7489.929 into Maryland SDR, S7/S9 with heavy storm crashes:
Blitzortung shows lightning all over Virginia and beyond. Next:
0030 UT Thursday WRMI 9395 to NNW
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S; 9395 to NNW

Full schedule including AM, FM, webcasts, satellite, podcasts:
http://www.worldofradio.com/radioskd.html

New WOR 2151 should be ready for download and first SWBC, from 0130 UT
Friday August 12 on WRMIs 5850, 7730.

Thanks this week for financial support from Joe Caberlin, VE1EJ,
Ontario, for some US$ to Glenn Hauser, P O Box 1684, Enid OK 73702;
preferably by money order or check on a US bank.

Or via PayPal, not necessarily in US funds, to
woradio at yahoo.com (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 9955, Aug 10 at 1840, WRMI is JBA with Brother HyStairical
attempting to sing, same as on blaster 9980 WWCR. WRMI skedgrid is
self-contradictory: transmissions atop shows TOM at 15-22 on #3 System
E 9955. But the System E program sked shows TOM this hour 18-19, only
on 5 other frequencies. System B, which accounts for 9955 usage most
of the time, is ``internet only`` with other programming until 1900
when it switches to 15770 for one hour (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** VANUATU. 11835, Aug 10 at 0636, RV at S6/S8 on 3 x 3945, talk and
music; still hearing ``double-het`` of slightly different frequencies
beating when tuned to 11834-USB, not explained but not China (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 11947, Aug 10 at 0635, rapid RTTY INTRUDING into
exclusive worldwide broadcast band (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Glenn Hauser logs August 9-10, 2022  View Printable Version
Wednesday, August 10 2022

Logs
** AFGHANISTAN. This week`s `Frontline` on PBS, dated August 9,
``Afghanistan Undercover`` is an inside look on Taliban mistreatment
of women, well worth watching entirely, but starting about 30 minutes
into, a segment on a women`s radio station still on the air -- but of
course, run by men. Can`t find it in WRTH 2022. Saw an 89.8? go by:
https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/documentary/afghanistan-undercover/

https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/documentary/afghanistan-undercover/transcript/
``Under the Taliban, around half of Afghanistan’s media outlets have
closed, but in Faizabad, Radio Sada-e-Banowan, the Voice of Women, was
still on-air...`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** BRAZIL. 11715-11730 approx., August 9 at 2253, extremely loud
crackling spur in talk, some music; as has happened before I think
it`s out of the 11780 RNA transmitter which is now S9/+20, the SSOB
even more than Cuba; especially since I find a match on the opposite
side, 11835-11850 approx. Altho I do not have a second receiver handy
to correlate the modulation. There is also amorphous similar hash
further up to beyond 12 MHz which may be from the same source, if not
something local (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. Probably due to rolling blackouts, several RHC and relay
frequencies are missing, August 9 at 2346: 13650 CRI and nothing else
on 13 MHz; August 10 at 0000, no 5990, 6000, 9650, 9710, 11850, 11880,
11950 nor anything on 15 MHz.

These RHC Spanish are on after 0000 August 10: 11670, S8/S9; and
11760, S4/S6, both undermodulated.

6165, August 9 at 2359, RHC `English` already on at S9/+20 but *still*
horrible modulation like amplified whispering with a very narrow audio
bandwidth. The Other Side:

DIARIO DE CUBA Society --- Cuba is a Maleconazo (and this time a raft
crisis won't solve the problem) --- In just two weeks some 30 cities
and towns in 13 Cuban provinces have turned out to protest...
José Luis Reyes, Madrid 08 Ago 2022 - 15:19 CEST
https://diariodecuba.com/cuba/1659964758_41466.html
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** GERMANY. 9670, August 9 at 2349, unmistakable Brother Scare is
audible, S3/S5, via Channel 292; while little else is arriving on 31m
from Europe except Romania. Is not shown on sked:
https://www.channel292.de/schedule-9670-khz/
but it`s obvious that only a few hours per day are any other paid
programming (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6919?LSB?, Aug 10 at 0006, only pirate on band with
music, no carrier, and I can`t make the music resolve and sound right
stepping up and down around here in USB or LSB. But judging from many
more logs here, it was unID on 6917 USB including SSTV images:
https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,100552.0.html
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY [non]. 9830, Aug 9 at 2244, still no VOT, just weak China
into UTwente, as first noted the case at 2200 in previous report.
Something`s always erroneous at Emirler (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2150 monitoring: confirmed Tuesday
August 9 at 2230 on WRMI 9955, S9/+5 into Maryland SDR and no Cuban
jamming; but by 2248 the jamming noise has cut on and building up to
2300 for R. Libertad. WOR remains more or less readable.

Also confirmed Tuesday August 9 at 2330 on WRMI 9395, S9+20/22 into
Maryland SDR; Midnite Cry, preceding preacher, still going at 2329.5
trying to give website when cut to WRMI ID.

Bandscanning later at 2358 I barely catch WOR also ending on 5950!
Must have also started at 2330. NOT scheduled, rather System L with
one-hour `Challenge` at 2300 M-F. No second receiver handy so can`t
check whether synchro with 9395 which is System G. Next:

1030 UT Wednesday WRMI 5850 to NW
1100 UT Wednesday Unique R, Australia 5035-USB or 3210-USB
2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW
0030 UT Thursday WRMI 9395 to NNW
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S; 9395 to NNW

Full schedule including AM, FM, webcasts, satellite, podcasts:
http://www.worldofradio.com/radioskd.html

Thanks this week for financial support from Joe Caberlin, VE1EJ,
Ontario, for some US$ to Glenn Hauser, P O Box 1684, Enid OK 73702;
preferably by money order or check on a US bank.

Or via PayPal, not necessarily in US funds, to
woradio at yahoo.com (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 9900, Aug 9 at 2351, S4/S6 direct, just barely
modulated, so I figure it`s Cairo, Portuguese for Brasil. But that
should have ended at 2330. Uplooked later, at this hour Cairo should
be on 9885 in Arabic, unchecked. Otherwise in EiBi, 9900 is now the
China/Taiwan radio war, CNR1 jamming from Beijing vs RTI (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

Glenn Hauser logs August 8-9, 2022  View Printable Version
Tuesday, August 09 2022

Logs
** EGYPT. 9439.995, Aug 9 at 2140, R. Cairo S9+20/35 into UTwente,
mostly just a whine with bits of talk modulation breaking thru at
peaks, more so during extremely distorted music, totally useless.
Something`s always egregious in Egypt (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** MALDIVES [non]. 11620, August 9 at 1515, Voice of Martyrs Korea,
Christian talk in English, not Dhivehi, S8/9+10, rating as the
strongest signal on band! except for OOB 12160 WWCR blaster: better
than 11760 Cuba and 11860, 11930 Cuba-non which reach only S9. Remains
incredible from secret site supposedly aimed toward the opposite side
of the world (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. Alan Roe replies to my previous report: ``Hi Glenn, It
wasn't entirely clear, but I think that Justin meant that the
Letterbox/DX Programme is upcoming in a *forthcoming* edition of the
programme saying: " ... soon we'll talk shop in another letterbox/DX
Programme, but today what we are going to do is to return to our ...
interview with ... Idoia López" (which turns out to be a repeat of a
feature aired originally, I think, on 20 June). Anyway, the
Letterbox/DX Programme is therefore likely to be aired this Wednesday
or Friday, and it's good news that the REE English programme is
continuing. Alan Roe, Teddington, UK`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. Fixing a couple of time typos in previous report:

9830, August 8 at 2234, VOT English, S9/+20 into UTwente, with
continuous lite humbuzz but tolerable in Turkish music, 2236 feature
about electricars, 2242 another song, 2248 Did You Know That? After
sign-off schedule, IS from 2255; restart at 2256 then with German IDs
twice a minute. Still on at 2300 timesignal, sign-on bonus German,
same humbuzz as before during news past 2305 tune-out... (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 9830, August 9 at 2157, via UTwente standing by for VOT in
English --- but no show by 2208, just much weaker signal locked onto
including Chinese timesignal at 2200. Maybe later? Maybe an hour of
German and another of Portuguese like yesterday? You never know.
Something`s always erroneous at Emirler (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** UKRAINE [non]. 7730, August 9 at 0501, UR1 via WRMI with `Ukraine:
Security Issue`, tuned in too late to hear datestamp, but by YL,
including: Russia`s nuclear blackmail; 2000 civilians evacuated from
Luhansk region. Surprisingly, 0507 immediately followed by *another*
U:SI with a different announcer, OM, as for August 8, Day 168, but it
sounds strangely familiar like the edition heard yesterday, ending
with the Turkish UAV factory story until 0514. Same script, re-voiced?
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2150 monitoring: confirmed UT
Tuesday August 9 at 0030 on WRMI 9395, S7/9+10 into Maryland SDR. Lite
QRM from extremely regular noise bursts as clearly visible on
waterfall, 40 times per minute, but occasionally replaced by a totally
different-looking and -sounding burst. These span roughly 9300-9700,
tapering off up to 10000. Recheck at 0110, they are gone. Something
nearby that SDR, or widespread? Next:

2230 UT Tuesday WRMI 9955 to SSE [jammed by Cuba]
2330 UT Tuesday WRMI 9395 to NNW
1030 UT Wednesday WRMI 5850 to NW
1100 UT Wednesday Unique R, Australia 5035-USB or 3210-USB
2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW
0030 UT Thursday WRMI 9395 to NNW
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S; 9395 to NNW

Full schedule including AM, FM, webcasts, satellite, podcasts:
http://www.worldofradio.com/radioskd.html

Thanks this week for financial support from Joe Caberlin, VE1EJ,
Ontario, for some US$ to Glenn Hauser, P O Box 1684, Enid OK 73702;
preferably by money order or check on a US bank.

Or via PayPal, not necessarily in US funds, to
woradio at yahoo.com (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** VANUATU [and non]. 11835: Ron Howard replies to my previous
reports:

``My Aug 8 reception (island song "Better Day" and announcer in
Bislama). No other station noted. Also before 0559 UT, nothing heard
on 11835. At my QTH, I would definitely hear CNR2 if it was on 11835
kHz. Last year I did in fact have some serious CNR2 QRM problems while
trying for Radio Vanuatu's harmonic on 11835, but no such problem this
year. I believe CNR2 on 11835 was last listed for the A21 schedule.
Currently Aoki lists nothing on 11835, which conforms to my frequent
observations. Only RV is currently heard on 11835.

``- - - - A few of my CNR2 (11835) logs from last year:
Aug 1-2, 2021, on 11835, at 0630, ID in English for "This is C-N-R
Business Radio" (CNR2), so continuing with the BoH ID,
which is not used at ToH. May 10, 2021, heard Radio Vanuatu on 7890
(harmonic), found a new starting time of *0659; from 0704 to 0728,
news/sports in Bislama; approaching fair reception; 11835 harmonic
covered by CNR2. Ron, California`` -- I replied:

``Hi Ron, OK, if it`s not CNR2 now, maybe the RV carrier itself is
unstable, causing the `two-tone het` if listening on 11834-USB. That
would be understandable since it`s a spurious harmonic in the first
place. So we should hear nothing at all on 11835 before 0600. 73,
Glenn``

And so I start checking at 0555 UT August 9. Yes, no signal at all on
11835, but 7260 has the JBA carrier no doubt from RV. Seems to waver a
bit, and with splash from 7265 French = VOA SAO TOME; but of course no
problem from 7255, Nigeria long gone. Then I`m QRX for 11835 to come
on, which it does at *0559:12, S6/S8. Again it seems to waver
slightly, maybe propagation-caused if not transmitter instability. I
haven`t been measuring it, but do so this time: only about 3 or 4 Hz
high (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
